God I seriously hate this stupid fucking game. I just love it when EXP33trannies raid a Final Fantasy thread to derail the conversation by shitting on JRPGs and Japanese game devs awhile larping as "le true fans an sheit".
It's not like Clair Obscure came up with the idea of smashing glorified QTEs in turn-based combat. Shadow Hearts not only did that close to twenty years ago, it did it better purely because of the inherent unique qualities the Judgement Ring brought.

To be fair the dev never played Paper Mario, the inspiration was Sekiro, that's why player attacks don't actually have anything to do with animation timing, it's just abstract QTE
>>
>>722563820
In Paper Mario that mechanic is non-essential, if you want to ignore it, you can. Here it's so essential it makes the rest of the gameplay pointless. Just do the parries and you'll win. Doesn't matter what you do outside of parries, just click attack or something, you'll win

Engaging with the RPG part is still required unless you want every battle to last 3+ hours. Or do you think upgrading your weapons and armor is useless in other games because you can just get good enough to not take damage and kill the enemy with a million papercuts?
>>
Turn based combat but with an FPS option where you can shoot the idle targets and you are able to dodge and parry every attack and you need to press the button 3 times to execute basic abilities.
Too many cooks in the kitchen, the outcome was a braindead combat system that made battles so unenjoyable that I was actively avoiding encounters most of the time. I don't think I've ever been repulsed by a game this way.

Don't get me started on the story and characters, yikes.
>>
>>722570817
Not that anon but the example you posted was unironically better system, if the battles come down to just mashing attack, that indicates a difficulty scaling issue rather than a problem with the combat.

Even Pokemon which is maybe the simplest turn based RPG has infinitely more depth and purpose that E33. Stats, types, LVL, etc. actually mean something and require at least some strategy and preparation. E33 is a memory game where you could be playing entirely wrong but succeed if you just memorise the attack patterns, it's not satisfying and it completely kills any sense of progression, you are given plenty of options which ultimately mean nothing.

Obviously the game is balanced around the the dodge/parry/jump mechanic, the player and enemy are glass canons and the stats don't mean anything.
It's a bizarre defense of shit game design to imply that critics ignore the intended gameplay to enjoy the trve experience.

I finished E33 with all the side content, Simon included and while I didn't mind the combat system at first, I grew to hate it the more I played.
The actual turn-based aspects stop at buffing Maelle and maybe debuffing the enemy before she attacks. 99.99% of the game revolves around parry. Many enemies have completely fucked up parry timings that are hardly tied to the animations and sounds, and many of the long (6-8 hit) attack chains have an attack that completely breaks the previously set pacing just as a fuck you. At the same time many enemies have very simple and clear parry timings that you just naturally follow. It seems the devs are just sadists who took great enjoyment in fucking with your brain sneaking completely retarded timings here and there. It's a memory game where you need to re-do a fight multiple times to memorize and timings and then get your muscle memory right to follow then. So much for a turn-based game.

Not parrying is not an option unless you're a woman with the story mode enabled. There isn't really any tangible difference between normal and expert modes later on with the optional content (which is bulk of the actual content) because if you fail a parry or two you're likely dead regardless of the difficulty. If you're not dead then you may as well restart anyway because now your Verso tanked his rank, somebody needs resurrection (wasted turn) and so on. This is also why going for a tanky build is entirely counterproductive because while you can beef the characters up enough to soak a few hits, they're going to either tank their specific mechanics or simply lose too much AP and counter damage by not parrying perfectly. Everything revolves around parry.

>it's not satisfying
It's ridiculously satisfying, unless you're particularly bad at it. But read Steam reviews. Most people say exactly that it's very satisfying. Most people, which means players of average skill, not some top gitgudders.
>>
>>722576920
There's also dodge which is just a bad parry that you should never use, it's almost as if the game want you to adopt a bad habit with dodge being an option, because if you don't get used to parrying as soon as possible, you're fucking yourself in the ass on the long run as it's pretty much mandatory later on. There's also jump and gradient counter which are just pointless button bloat in a "look this is not parry" way while being infinitely easier to perform.

Later on you can mitigate the parry issue with the shields mechanic but the final superboss just plain steals your shields and also removes from the game dead characters that haven't been immediately resurrected, just pivoting the whole fight into pure, agonizing parryslop that goes on for too long.
>>
>>722576981
The most downloaded mod for the game is one which lets you adjust the parry timings the be more lenient (the default is 0.15s) and it says a whole lot when people resort to shit like this. Sure they could just play in story mode but it seems they want to actually play the game, they just find the whole parryslop thing unfair and unfun and I completely agree with them despite having done everything the intended way already.

Dodge has a more generous window so you're invited to use it whenever you're not sure about the timing or just learning the boss. For example when I was fighting Sprong before breaking the damage cap I would parry the beams and the hand slaps but I found head bumps a bit difficult to reliably parry so I just dodged them for safety's sake.
>>
>>722577651
I never had to do this, all attacks either have clear cues or clear animations when they connect. There are maybe couple attacks that could throw you off like Troubadour attacks. But the game allows builds to play without even dodging, so you have to be both shit at games and retarded to complain.
>>722577809
Again, the game allows you to build party for no parry approach. You complain about having to heal your party after you get hit. What did you even expect from a JRPG? The game has shitton of abilities that give AP without parrying. You clearly failed at using the tools the game gives you.

early game was not fun because of this, later it gets better since you get more build options to take damage and not care that much about missed dodges or parries. Even if you heckin love parryslop, the actual RPG aspects are very rudimentary. The game gives you this illusion of choice with the many weapons and pictos but in the end some weapons are leagues ahead of the rest and you can enable all relevant pictos on all characters. Even stats are a meme since there's little to no reason to not dump most points into agility.

It also means there is definitely an A team and a B team because lumina until act 3 is pretty limited and there is no reason to bring in people for specific reasons generally as no one has really unique mechanics. You just end up stacking 3 people with all the lumina, and use pictos that have % damage and just outscale enemies. Bonus if you use Rush and then also slow enemies with Lune and enemies don't get turns.

perfect dodge is the same as the parry timing
if you just see "dodge" then you've successfully dodged what would have been a failed parry, and when you can perfect dodge you know you can successfully parry
>>
>>722586382
You can play as any character though? >>722578303
>dodge is just a worse parry which is very weird design
You can either have a more generous window to dodge, or parry within the "Perfect" window for a benefit, but if you miss it you get hit. Not sure how risk vs reward is weird design.
>>
>>722590327
it isn't rhythm based at all in e33 though, most attacks have retarded timings (too slow, not aligned with animation, not telegraphed, etc) and most chains have some hit that's completely out of synch

>>722554334
Played it during the month I had GP ultimate, and like, legitimately it's a beautiful game (audio-visual, I mean. Plus not having potato characters is a nice change), but the gameplay itself is ass and I got tired of the same repetitive:
>fight new enemy
>get smacked around a bit while you learn their timing
>learn timing and just block/parry/counter/shoot everything ad infinitum
>enemy becomes a non-issue for the rest of the game because they literally can't do anything to you
>repeat
-gimmick. Hell, if you're playing on any of the easier difficulties, you don't even need to learn their patterns since the reaction window is like 33 frames (haha) and you can just eyeball everything perfectly.
I'm 100% sure that anyone that says you can just eyeball anything on any difficulty got bored early and turned the difficulty down (me), and didn't realize that the difficulty changes the parry windows.

Someone in this thread mentioned SMRPG, but even that has a bit more to it since the timing varies so wildly and there's so many enemy attacks you straight-up can't block, and even then you only block half damage if you time stuff correctly unless you go for the 3(?) frame window to fully block something and probably miss it anyway since modern video/input delay is a lot longer than 3 frames.
And you can't change the difficulty to make the windows wider. (Unless you can in the remake, IDFK, haven't played it yet.)

It's a j-RPG, you're supposed to upgrade your characters STATS by looting armors and weapons and leveling up. Once you introduce the player's skills into this, you end up with a game that work against itself. As the characters progress, the skill ceiling actually drop dow and can only be balanced through artificial difficulty.
