No, he died because he contracted tuberculosis while acting as a enforcer for Strauss' loan sharking. The game's moral is "live a rotten life, die a rotten end." That's why you get 2x morality modifier in the semi-final chapter of the game. It is also why the government comes after John in RDR1, because they know he's still alive and they were never going to let him live after he outlasted his usefulness.
