Gaming history would have looked alot different if they made Driver 2 for the PS2 instead of dragging the PSX into 2000
Driver 2 has the template for what would become the open world sandbox but is held back alot by the PSX hardware with the horrible pop in, the shit framerate and simplistic maps

No it doesnt. Driver was not open world, it was linear tracks. It had an illusion of open world though. You must have never played it.
What it did do, at the time, was perfect 3d car controls that GTA 3 then blatantly ripped off.
GTA was already onpen worl though, just GTA3 made it 3d

This, GTA (the older ones at least) is always about freedom, fucking shit up in general, not just driving.
Driver I think is trying to be like those driving scene in movies like Bullitt or the Driver. They're kind of ahead of their era in a way, now that every AAA game want to be cinematic.

Im still so mad that arma 3 never got a proper in depth epoch port over that didnt have any issues around the time standalone bombed. Shit kept the hardcore players on Arma 2 epoch/dayz until the playerbase just completely died off waiting for anything new in '16/17 after playing for god knows how long and bambi's being just non existent because of the skill gap needed at that point

The sunny cloud blue skybox, the lighting and cars and the way the road is lit.

Can confirm. My friends and I played GTA2, Driver, etc and when GTA3 came out all we cared about was how awesome it was to get out and beat hookers to death with a baseball bat and blow cars up.
