For the anons that like tank controls, why?
I will admit that they work pretty well in games that only have fixed camera angles like the older RE games, but other than that those controls feel like ass.

I don't think anyone particularly likes them as an end onto itself. It's just a part of a series of unique and excellent games.
For fixed cam they are a necessity, but also more of a pain on gamepad. With d-pad you have to slide and hold your thumb all over, with a stick you don't have any tactile thresholds between diagonals and cardinals. On keyboard it's effortless.
For over the shoulder, they just provide a different flavor of TPS gameplay. Some even struggle to recognize the same exact control scheme, because it becomes more intuitive, and as a result, more handy. For those 2 RE games specifically, it's nice for a thriller to restrict you vision and movement. If you have to book it, you don't get to retain full situational awareness, or turn on a dime. A quick turn might become an emergent jump scare.
