A genuinely great game. It's basically the prototype for all first person 3D RPGs after it (and just 3D RPGs in general) and they pretty much nailed everything as far as they could nail it with 1992's tech. They're pretty close to just being modern first person RPGs just with ancient graphics and a giant UI. 2 of the best games ever made - although I remember 1 being better and more atmospheric than 2 overall.

The jumping is fucking atrocious though. The controls, the physics - just everything about the jumping sucks. I swear the hardest part of the game is trying to nail that jump to get into the first shrine on level 1. Just diabolically awful, feel free to savescum whenever you have to do any platforming, it's that bad

If you can get past the ancient graphics, relatively small screen resolution and the 90s UI... one of the best RPGs ever made and game design wise at least, it still mostly holds up even now.

It's a good game. Although majority of the new players try it since a YouTuber made a half assed let's play and will never make it past the 1st floor

20h+ of a great dungeon crawler. Make sure to patch it to enable mouse look, it's much better this way.

Oh yeah OP, use this:
https://github.com/vini1264/Ultima-Underworld-Portable
It's called Ultima Underworld Portable. It works for both games, sets them up properly so it's running on the correct cycles and doesn't have fucked up music. Adds MT-32 support so the music sounds great now. Has a slight brightness mod just to make the graphics pop a little more. It includes the mouselook mod as an optional toggle when launching the game (although personally I find the original controls work fine once you get used to them but it's there as an option if you can't.) Oh and you can play the entire first game in Portuguese now if you want - FINALLY!

Until hell freezes over and someone leaks the source code from the EA salt times and someone else makes a GZDoom style source port it's the best way to play the game right now.

Saudi's should make EA remaster them

Read the manual before you start the game

How similar is the gameplay to the first System Shock?
>>
Is the second game less cryptic than the first? I had to look up how to complete certain quests in Stygian Abyss
>>
>>722572202
Not very. It's closer to TES 1/2 if anything.
>>
>>722572202
Very similar. Similar control scheme (although I'd argue it works better in UW than in System Shock. Shock just added too many extra fucking buttons) but it's an RPG with NPCs walking around most of whom you can talk to. You're also swinging around a sword and that's tied to your stats and dice rolls (basically Morrowind combat except Underworld invented it and Morrowind didn't improve on it slightly in over a decade) but once you level up your stats just a bit nearly every slash will hit and you don't have to spend 100 hours grinding up until you can consistently hit a rat with a stick. I'd actually argue it's better than System Shock but your mileage may vary just cause it's a different genre.

I played Underworld Ascendant recently and it is about as bad as people say it is, but I still liked it and it was interesting experiencing firsthand why it's subpar instead of just taking consensus' word for it

Yeah I agree with sentiment. It's why I played through all of Thief 2014. Oh it was shit - the consensus was mostly right, not the worst game I've played but probably the most aggressively mediocre game I've ever played (and it often times dips just below being mediocre as the game goes on.) But at least I can properly articulate WHY it's shit, I'm not copying something some reviewer or e-celeb said like it's my own opinion.

If you could play only one which one is the better option?

1 since it’s more historically important and is a bit more disconnected from Ultima as a whole assuming you haven’t played those.

1. 2 has some legit improvements but it doesn't have the same atmosphere and it's pace kinda stops-and-starts. You have to revisit the castle hub and talk to a bunch of characters to advance the plot before teleporting to the next "world" in 2 whereas in 1 you're just stuck in a big fuck-off dungeon free to explore it however you want to your heart's content.

Plus Underworld 2 tries way more to tie itself into the mainline Ultima story so plot-wise it's actually a sequel to Ultima VII (not to be confused with Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle which is also a sequel to Ultima VII) and that can kinda be confusing/filter people near the start of the game (although you can pick up the basics pretty quick.) Meanwhile Underworld 1 has only a few ties to the main Ultima story and if you are familiar with Ultima you'll know that lore-wise it's totally at-odds with tons of shit the series had established (but that's fine cause Underworld's kinda its own thing.)

I dunno, not OP but I played it a few years ago and thought it was great. He should try it out - it's pretty good still
