What if Microsoft aren't cancelling the Xbox line but rushing a new console out the door? Nintendo did it when the Wii U was bombing. Microsoft did it when the original Xbox was bombing. The Series S/X hasn't worked out, maybe they're going to rush some new hardware out of the gate to get a jump on the next generation? If they release a year ahead of a PS6, they could effectively set the spec floor for new games.

I'm trying to think of a way that makes the random price hike and discontinuation of Series S/X sales at numerous retailers make sense.

While that makes some sense, there's zero hype to launch a next-gen Xbox now.

I forgot they called it a Series X that is the worst name ever. Anyway are you really that eager to get another $900 E-waste box?

The price hike is clearly because they essentially ARE going 3rd party. Look at the games being ported to all platforms and the "xbox play everywhere this is an xbox" marketing they did a while ago.
I assume they increased the price of gay pass to try and recoup losses and set a median price that is competitive with PSN. They even changed the names of the tiers to mirror PSN which is funny as fuck.
I think xbox is gonna go the way of teh steam machine in some regards where it is a windows PC with locked OS and bought as custom made or tiers of premade spec hardware. Basically they are looking on leaving the general consumer market and only catering to the xbox brand loyalty and enthusiasts.

I'm just wondering if they've looked at the data and realised competing directly with playstation hasn't panned out for them. The 360 did really well in part because it launched so far ahead of the PS3. I don't think it'll do amazingly because they've seriously poisoned fanfare with the gamepass hike.

But what I can't figure out, is why they've both hiked the price, and seemingly EOL'd the Series consoles. People are speculating it's because BLOPS on GP lost them money, but tanking their subscription numbers for a quick grab to try and recoup a miniscule amount of revenue to MS is bizarre even by their standards.

They're exiting the console race because "everything is an Xbox" now
