How do I get gud?
Also homm3 thread

Getting "good" in this is just treating it like RTS and rush must maps

>>
>>722599920
don't bother playing it. its like chess.
open by buying capitol, castle and shit that gives you moneyu and secure wood and stone. buy many heroes so they can explore for you and if you know how to fight efficiently you will basically cheese this game
>>
>>722599920
How's HotA?

learn to farm creature banks in week 1
>>
>>722599920
you need to abuse mechanics and AI
for example AI will pretty much never leave castle walls when defending
or that you should split your shooter stacks since focusing a single target is very easy
or that you should have 1 stacks of weak units to eat retaliations and/or block flyers
or that earth magic is by far the best in the game
or that clearing dragon utopias usually gives you the best artifacts on the map

The duality of man
>>
>>722602197
>you should split your shooter stacks
that's situational, and can lead to unnecessary stacks getting attacked. instead, you need to learn how to kite.
>clearing dragon utopias usually gives you the best artifacts on the map
That's lategame shit. a retard just playing homm isn't gonna know what to do with that, much less rarely ever get to lategame.

>and/or block flyers
It's just more effective to have high defense stat and some beefy units.
and that is with the bare minimum of slow.

>>722599920
>How do I get gud?
learn how to chain your heros.
don't farm the entire map, just farm what you need.
try to break out of your first zone within the first week.
>>
>>722602197
Thanks anon
>>
>>722601931
great mod, feels very vanilla, no weird ass changes just to increase complexity
especially improvements to balance, some characters/skills were strictly superior to others and there was no reason to ever consider them
What was strong is still strong, only slightle less so, but weak stuff is no longer game losing if you get it
>>
>>722602579
>that's situational, and can lead to unnecessary stacks getting attacked.
as opposed to your shooter stacks getting lightning bolt'd and focused every single time?
>That's lategame shit. a retard just playing homm isn't gonna know what to do with that, much less rarely ever get to lategame.
dragon utopias are not late game, who's a retard shitter now? git gud
>It's just more effective to have high defense stat and some beefy units.
oh yeah so dragon utopias are forbidden lategame knowledge but having a high defense stat early game is somehow possible? shut the fuck up retard
>>
>>722602767
didn't they nerf eagle eye, too?
>>
>>722602579
>try to break out of your first zone within the first week.
thats multiplayer advice
he should play some campaigns at first
>>
>>722602898
>nerf eagle eye
they buffed it, quite a lot
still not worth on main hero, but situationally could be game winning
same with learning and first aid
>>
>>722599920
Learn to clear neutral stacks without losing units. This is a tip that is relevant to both newbies and intermediate levels of players. If you're complete newbie, just read about magic school skills and how they affect spells. Mass slow will get you far against default difficulty AI.
>>
>>722602197
>for example AI will pretty much never leave castle walls when defending
It will leave their castle to kill few heroes with 1 trog each, even if goal is to hold that city until time limit
>>
>>722602898
>nerf eagle eye
How can you nerf it? Make it that it actually debuff hero who took it?

I've already done Archibald campaign and I'm currently doing Roland. I'm at the last scenario and at first I thought it would be easier than Archibald, but it's so fucking annoying. I'm going to have to start the scenario all over again for the third time.
>>
>>722603863
>minus one skill slot
It is already a debuff
>>
>>722599920
You mean single player scenario, campaigns, generated maps, multiplayer? Just kidding, normal stuff are:
- usually you want to recruit few heroes for scouting, marking mines, visiting weekly stuff like windmill / watermill, carrying new weekly troops, collecting troops from camps
- one powerhouse character, you want to constantly use that hero to clear map, rarely going back to starting city with exceptions of upgrading to level 2, getting new magic, visiting some city-dependent weekly buildings (stable, mana vortex) or buffing permament major skill (+1 attack/def/magic/knowledge)
- pro players can do fucking wonders with 8 characters on map
- focus on building army buildings, so they keep stack per week even if you don't have resources
- capitol rush is newbie trap
- usually you want solid shooting stack on 1 position and you guard them against neutrals
- mostly at start, you want to have something like: 1st slot: archers, 2nd slot:rest of melee, 3-7slot: 1 unit of melee ; the 1 slotters are usually used for kiting and misdirecting AI so shooter can clear this shit up
- crowd control magic > damage magic mostly
- Solmyr is GOAT, then you think is meme, then again it's GOAT
- Castle is by far most intuitive at start.

>>722601657
>capitol rush
It's honestly not worth to buy capitol itself in first week. You would rather finish castle beforehand for greater creature bank.

>>722603863
>>722602898
The buffed it to the point it's not meme anymore.

>>722604613
Homm2 campaign is so wonderful mess and it is great. Archibald is easy due to dragon alliance perk. Roland has shortcut as you can pick a mission that allows you keep army for last mission and you can just steamroll Archibald in week1. (which is the only time you can do such thing)
>>
>>722605246
>one powerhouse character, you want to constantly use that hero to clear map
you really only want your main to clear large exp gains like cash/creature banks and such.
the rest can be done with anyone, since the exp gain is so low. and people regularly poor-man's tp to save movement points. the point is, a player needs goals on the map, then aim for them.
this is done to minimax movement points.

all of this, however, is something which a new player really doesn't need to know atm. but it's something to keep in mind to play better.
>>
>>722599920
Spend some time watching some russian homm3 autists on twitch. The most important thing i would say is learning how to kite well, which will let you clear big monster camps early with just couple of archers. The second most important thing is probably the movement of your hero, the ability of using a couple of heroes to transfer your army across half the map in one turn.
>>
>>722599920
Get gud in Settlers 2 first.
>>
>>722605935
Ah shit, you are right. At some point it's not worth to waste movement points to clear up for small camps. Even max 4 uses of Dimension Door on expert... unless you are stacking with necromancy.

>>722606171
>multiplayer game
>90% of time is just fighting with neutrals

>>722606323
You actually mean Knights & Merchants.
>>
>>722606426
You can just watch Norovo he does runs of SP maps and he's very knowledgeable about the game, the only issue is that you kind of have to pay attention and this game is not a very fun or visual watch
>>
>>722605246
>you can pick a mission that allows you keep army for last mission and you can just steamroll Archibald in week1
I guess I'll go back to the previous mission and do just that.
>>
>>722606563
Try Olliz. This is some high grade autistm tier.

>>722606568
Last Roland mission is just a huge struggle at start, then there is no challenge other than just stacking high level units from all castles, mostly Titans from Wizard.
>>
>>722599920
>How do I get gud?
earth magic on every hero; it's the best school for both might and magic and it's not close
expert slow and town portal are the most useful spells in the game
expert resurrection and anti-magic aren't far behind
and there's still shield, meteor, implosion, force field, and earth elemental

put ranged units "above" any other unit in your army with the same speed so that they act first

might heroes desperately need the tactics skill in order to close with the enemy and use their superior combat stats while also spacing them so that enemy spells like meteor or chain lighting are less effective

some creatures have cheap building upgrades with good effects and should be upgraded ASAP (e.g. archers), while others are expensive for minor improvements and should be ignored until you have excess resources

>block your titan
How do you counter this?
>>
>>722602197
>>722602579
>you should split your shooter stacks
>that's situational
reply is correct
splitting shooters is good to minimize overkill, mitigate blind/forget or very powerful single-target magic, and get the most from morale, but can backfire badly against other player/AI

multiple weaker stacks can be completely cleared by meteor/chain lightning/armageddon, while one stack would only suffer ~25% losses
splitting makes it more difficult to keep melee units away, even with tactics skill
splitting allows other units of the same speed to attack before some of yours
splitting requires army spaces which could be filled with units, including bait or utility units
a might hero can usually hard-counter splitting shooters by splitting fliers

Unless you mean vs other player on random maps in PvP. Then have better luck then your opponent when map generate LMAO.

Get yourself up to 8 heroes fast. Most of these heroes will only keep 1 unit and be used to ferry troops and artifacts to the front lines where your real 1 or 2 heroes kill everything.
Rush economy and higher tier troops, getting your level 7 building even 1 week faster can change the difficulty of a map completely. When deciding what to build keep in mind what tier you will complete by day 7 of the week.
Slow+Expert Earth magic and Haste+Expert Air magic are 2 of the strongest spells in the game, and completely change the way most battles play out.

do not do this
you only need two or three heroes until you control multiple towns and have enough territory that one support hero cannot farm all of the mills and dwellings

you don't have to play campaigns where the main hero can't retreat
>>
>>722599920
-Get as many heroes as possible, discovering resources and objectives snowballs into larger armies, which snowballs into being able to clear more objectives

-Know which units are the most efficient for each faction and focus on them, although HotA changes things a fair amount, this is a fine baseline website https://web.archive.org/web/20010628173905/http://www.3do.com/products/pc/heroes3/tactics/unit-rating.htm

Obviously no Cove of Factory though

Adding to this, if you want an infallible strategy, just go Necropolis and focus on Vampire Lords, Power Liches, and Dread Knights (Tiers 4 through 6) with Tier 1 Skellies as fodder.

Vampire Lords are the best unit in the base game and HotA does nothing to nerf them, Power Liches are excellent ranged attackers in the base game and were buffed for some reason in HotA, and Dread Knights are just really solid Tier 6 units capable of going toe to toe with anything.

For Heroes, prio Might heroes over Magic ones.
>>
>>722621275
>>722621932
do the opposite of what this guy said except for the bit about vampire lords; they are busted in large numbers when fighting against any faction but other undead and conflux
