Is it just me, or does no horror game scare me anymore? Why can't devs create a scary atmosphere?
>>722606352They don't want to spend time making a good horror game because horror games make no money.
they can force the audio up to 200%
>>722606352I mean your no longer a kid, duh. Like in order to be actually scary as an adult games need to perfectly check off like a dozen boxes to actually be on the level to scare you
>watch spooky youtube videos during the night>get spooked and keep looking under my bed>watch spooky youtube videos during the day>lol wtf is this stupid shithmmm I feel like horror depends on your mood at the moment too, the same thing can be spooky if you're a spookable mood, and can look silly if you're not in a spookable mood
>>722606352The problem is that actual horror is niche and zoomers only want mascot meme material shits.
>>722606352You're older. Go back and play shit like RE1/SH2, they're not scary whatsoever
>>722606352manipulative and grifting women are very scary, i agree.
>>722606352Because horror games sucks since everyone has the stupid idea that the monster has to be seen so they can make use of their high end graphic cards.
>>722606625
i've started drawing horror monster conceptsit's actually kinda hard making scary things, harder than it seems
>>722607016SH1 and 3 are still scary. 2 never was.>>722607103Love SH f shoving the camera right up a monster's face when they introduce it, killing any ambiguity the monster might have had, just so it can do a big mean roar.
>>722606581I'll make a grand game that combines elements from horror, shmup and fighting games.
>>722606952>Get spooked and keep looking under my bedAre you actually 12? The fuck is wrong with you??
>>722607497what if it's under my bed though? hmmm?
>job simulator with scary shit happening in the backgroundwhat are some other kinos like this?
>>722607624Being a hikikomori is my job and Silent Hill 4 nails it
>>722607016Probably this, but for me, it's also because I know it's just a game.>something spooky in the hall>lol just run at it because i can load the save
>>722607050qrd?
>>722609270ex holo vtuber who went indie and announced that she's married
>>722606352That tapir is scaring me
>>722607373>2 never was.I think that was the best part about SH2. I never felt scared I just felt alone, which made the character interactions way more memorable, and then the game made me feel even more alone when they turned on me or died. The solitude and longing for human contact was more powerful than being afraid and more in tune with the game's theme.
>>722609270ex holo debuted as indie and started shilling merch day one, later on, she announced her marriage out of nowhere after she got the money.
>>722607373I just replayed 3 and it's a nothing burger. Heather is fucking indestructible as a character, so you're literally never in any sort of danger.
>>722609002Games don't really work with horror for one of the reasons you've mentioned. Horror relies on stakes, permanent reprocussions, and the unknown. Very few horror games have any sort of true failure state.
>>722606352Just like horror films nobody actually wants scary games. They want "scary" games they can play on stream or with friends and they want memes.Fearful atmosphere also requires tension and immersion which is too slow for modern ADHD.
>>722606352I dunno this seems pretty scary...
>>722606352Because most of them have autosaves, dying doesn't punish you. You go back like 30 seconds ago and simply try again.
i'm still too afraid to play the FNAF games but any other horror game is fine
>>722606352You tolerance for horror and dread is much higher after decades of playing/watching horror media.
>>722607624The peek a boo/blink and you miss it horror is kino.We Harvest Shadows has this.
>>722606352I'm almost desensitized from horror in general, at most a couple of jumpscares still get me, but horror overall doesn't really affect me anymore. On the other hand, I really appreciate when horror games put a good amount of effort on their world and sound design, and it's my belief that good sound design can truly make or break a horror game. FAITH is really good for that for example, and just this weekend I played Dead Space and it was filled with so many barely audible yet still noticeable scary sounds in the background, it would always keep me on guard, but when it came to being loudly surprised by necromorphs, I would just instantly cap them without hesitation.Games that only rely on jumpscares annoy me on the other hand, they're the cheapest form of horror they can use.
>>722610823I think if the horror in a game just boils down to nuisance then it's not particularly good horror
>>722609270/vt/ SEAniggers and indian unicorns angry that the green woman has a life outside of vtubing and announced her IRL marriage.
>>722606352If a game is too scary it wont sell and devs know this, see Alien Isolation
>>722607624It's nowhere near as serious but I did enjoy Happy's Humble. Pretty fun and fast paced.
>>722611234Alien Isolation was way too long
>>722611139I already got two replies without the seething virgin ragethanks though
I wish i could play Horror games, i like them. But if i try to i'll just end up with pain in my chest and having panic attacks.>t. had to go to the hospital after trying to play dead space
>>722611234Didn't Alien Isolation eventually sell well from word of mouth and thanks to streamers? Granted, I agree that the horror genre remains relatively niche outside of the usual series like Resident Evil, so investing too much on a horror game can be a gamble unless the game gains good traction from streamers shilling the game.
>>722607497I absolutely agree, only children would check under the bed. Thats absolutely ridiculous. The monsters don't hide under the bed or in your closet and i aren't even real. Stop being such a child, anon!
>>722611468Don't worry little buddy I'll beat the scary games for you haha I'll protect you from the big bad monsters lol but only if I get to fuck you first though :eyes:
>>722606581FPBP. Corporations would rather make generic gray mush than anything that might potentially alienate even 10% of gamers these days. I hate it.
>>722611468you've got a heart problem?
>>722607624Signal sim
>>722606352I would be freaking out if a scary monster started to do the macarena
>>722606352Because they think everything needs to be an action game like Call of Duty
>>722611879Yes, i have what's called hearth murmur (might be wrong idk how its called in english) combined with anxiety. Hell, sometimes i'm trying to sleep, start listening to my hearthbeats, get anxious, hearth beats faster, and so on to the point i almost pass out. Shit sucks man
>>722611234>Alien Isolation>too scary
I still find SH1 highly scary especially the school. I think it's because SH1's controls are actually harder to control than PS1 RE games. SH1 would actually be much easier if it had RE controls and fixed camera angles.
>>722606352These days I could be sitting in a dark basement with the Lament Configuration, but until the Cenobytes show up inflicting real life injury, I'm not able to get "scared".
>>722606818This is the biggest factor..Though idk why, but for whatever reason while watching Weapons I felt genuine fear twice. Screamed like a retard in the comfort of my own home, wasn't altogether pleasant, but man it made me realize how fucking long it's been since I've actually felt that feeling of lack of control, adrenaline, and terror. It's such a heavier lift trying to trick adults who have seen piles of scary movies/etc into being scared. I don't know what it was about Weapons, maybe the undertones of the narrative putting me in a state of immersion? Idk, probably most people who have seen that movie would laugh at that confession.
>>722606352sppoky atmosphere isnt realall horror games are just jump scares
>>722610260You could do what the hellblade devs did and lie about permadeath to give the false sense of real stakes without actually having said stakes. It's scummy and only works once but it does get the job done.
>>722607624mortuary assistant is such a good fucking game, manit pisses me off that games like this were more common in the early 2000s but now a days everything follows formulas to appeal to largest demographics because of shareholders
>>722613442Limited lives does it, or permadeath, or at least some permanent reprocussions.
>>722606352The fear factor disappears once you're old enough to know there isn't any real danger. You have to be willing to suspend your disbelief and get immersed if you wanna be a horror enjoyer.
>>722610750my dick disagrees
>>722606952>keep looking under my bed for the spooky ghost girl>keep being disappointed
>>722614325I had a dream one time where I was in a parking garage sort of place where a little girl with a skull face kept peeking out from behind pillars, disappearing behind one and popping out from behind another, then after a while I managed to catch her and started raping her, that was a good one
>>722614325>110 billion dead humans>Still no ghost gfFucking rigged RNG.>Captcha: 0S0S4
>>722606352I've never found video games scary. Unless they glitch out after I've been up 20 hours.
>>722606352>Is it just me, or does no horror game scare me anymore?think about what you just wrote
>>722614586you rang?https://mega.nz/file/Z7x1ERKb#qQSF8T9hh3bnx6KmoO8EXmCE5_pJP9iRWhcAnuXnpBs
>>722612462try listening to ambience while going to sleep if you haven't yet
>>722607624why are horror games so adverse to subtle scares like this? Those moments where you sense something is off only to get a glimpse or soft sound of something is what really tingles that primitive fear response.
>>722613670What do you mean? Mortuary assistant is much more typical of 10s/20s indie games. The entire concept of job simulator games is a more modern concept since the more traditional attitudes of the industry during the 90s/10s would be that a game where you do a job would be boring.
>>722609803Like 7 months after she re-debuted. And, funnily enough, right after a live show where many bought tickets just to see her.
fuck i was looking through spooky makima pics on google and I cant jack off to her anymore
>>722615342>during the 90s/10s90s/00s*
>>722615168I'm too retarded for that, i'll just keep singing random songs in my brain just to cuss myself with shit like "shut up and sleep god damn it" and i'll repeat it for hours untill i fall asleepI wake up at least 4 times each night too
>>722606352You're not scared of things you're familiar with. True novelty is extremely scarce in this industry, hence why the primary way to describe a horror game is like "resident evil clone", "amnesia clone", "fnaf clone" et cetera.
I still think VotV is one of the better horror experiences out there. Getting immersed in the SETI satellite wagie sim gameplay for a week only to see some demon sprint through the woods while doing hash codes is still one of the spookiest moments I have ever had in a game.
>>722611234How did the alien work again? High difficulty made it appear too often amd killed tension, something like that.
>>722615419>And, funnily enough, right after a live show where many bought tickets just to see her.now that's just evilwhy are women so evil?
>>722606352>Is it just me, or does no horror game scare me anymore?>meOF COURSE IT COULD ONLY BE YOUARE YOU RETARDED?
>>722610750is this a porn game?
>>722606352Genre for emotionally stunted manchildren
>>722615826Got a strong urge to play this again, haven't played since before the current base was added, so there’ll be a bunch of new shit for me.But I've been hearing update this month, so I'm gonna wait. Fuck I wish it was out already for playing over the month.
>>722615826game is pretty fun, but it isn't scary at all. there's too much furry shit and memes to be scary.
all of the tropes have been done so much and the problem is most horror games aren't made to be good horror games anymore, they're being made in order to capitalize on streamers who love over-acting for their audience
>>722615136Subarashii
>>722616197yeah I have heard the same, got a strong urge to replay but I'll wait for the big content patch.>>722616214I disagree, its pretty good if you allow yourself to get immersed. It only stops being scary when you ruin the game for yourself by engaging with the meme bullshit out of boredom in later weeks.
does anyone know of a horror game where from start to finish it isn't scary unless you go out of your way to find the scary shit?
There is no such thing as a scary horror game
>>722612625Silent Hill games scare you in a different way, they don't throw thousands of enemies at you so you stop caring. They scare you with atmosphere, sounds, music and something unknown. Expectation of something you cannot comprehend is much scarier than any boogey man.
>>722615826I think it's starting to get a little too silly and too many of the events are too obvious and invasive on your daily tasks.I'm looking forward to that game where you operate a giant Sci Fi artillery gun, but I think that's supposed to be less spooky and more Papers Please.
>>722616376INFRAYou pretty much need a guide to find the one scary part.
>>722616554This is kinda true. The best horror moments are in games where horror isn't the main thing, you're just thrust in an unexpectedly dark and uncertain situation. That's kinda why Job simulator type games are so good at striking a balance at it. It gets you into a rhythm of a safe and predictable process and then suddenly you have to step outside of your comfort zone.
>>722606352Another barely disguised third worlder SEA thread.
>>722616810this is the only example i can think of
What if somebody made a horror game where a floating strawberry ice cream cone with hairy monster arms and huge claws with a voice of a woman tries to kill you?
>>722606352The fear of the unknown is real horror. I've been playing modded minecraft lately and it really makes regular exploration kind of scary because of all the weird modded mobs you can run into at any given point.
>>722616241But streaming is dying and in a few years will be a "retro" thing. Bad bussiness to make games for streaming gaylords.
>>722618263>streaming is dying? first time I'm hearing this
>>722606352Because you're a manchildren, anon, looking for "scary" things all awhile mildly realizing they are fantasies and not scary at allYou are at the middle of being a full grown manTruly scary things don't sell. You don't want to be scared, you want to be amused.
I find voices of the void scary. I once found a tape near a hole, played it and got scared by a monstrous noise. Also the lack of pausing.Votv is great.
>>722612856It's why games like dead space 1 are so good. It's the right balance of ambience, lighting, good sound design, and building tension while sometimes having misdirection. It's why so much modern horror is trash because it's relies too heavily on jump scares and gore
>>722617634that probably exists on roblox.
>>722615829It was pretty annoying how often it showed up in certain places. Hiding in a closet twiddling your thumbs loses it's tension fast.
>>722606625>be above 25>earbursting sounds now just make me mildly dizzy and slump over rather than jumpit's just a "fucking stop" feeling rather than any kind of jumpscare
>>722612617What do you think is scary anon, you're supposed to share not just judge
>>722620896Not that anon, but I wouldn't consider Alien Isolation scary, but suspenseful. You know that the Alien exists and that you're alone in a ship filled with paranoid humans and killer android, so you already know what to expect as you move from area to area. The game is more about how it will attack you with those dangerous elements and how you have to stay on your guard at all times because of your almost inability to fight back. The xenomorph doesn't even jumpscare you outside of certain sequences, you always hear or see when it's coming so you know when it's the time to hide.
>>722618831I jumped at a shadow once and I'm still not sure if it was a graphical hiccup or an actual entity. The game's really good at making you anxious and exploiting it.
>>722618504Twich is loosing viewers every daycits a shadow of its former self, the peak was in 2020
>>722622360probably the sleep demon trying to diddle you
>>722618504Not really, it's more that Twitch has been doing its best to alienate its non-paying viewership with unskippable ads, that and the place has become a shadow of its former self when the more popular streams tend to be camwhores. Youtube has actually become a better platform, but since it lacks the chat culture that viewers like from Twitch, not many have moved there yet.
I've read the very same complaints regarding horror movies and games back in the 00s. Horror fans just get desensitized there are only so many times a ghost or serial killer can spook you.
>>722622375>basically nuke clips feature that was your only real way of generating cross media clicks>tranny moderator drama cancelling your own site culture>inject ads instead of an inventive creator friendly monetization scheme>site is taken over by soulless normalfaggots who don't play games>those normalfaggots jump ship to other platforms anywaysamazon is a soulless slop mill
