Is it just me, or does no horror game scare me anymore? Why can't devs create a scary atmosphere?
>>
>>722606352
They don't want to spend time making a good horror game because horror games make no money.
>>
they can force the audio up to 200%
>>
>>722606352
I mean your no longer a kid, duh. Like in order to be actually scary as an adult games need to perfectly check off like a dozen boxes to actually be on the level to scare you

hmmm I feel like horror depends on your mood at the moment too, the same thing can be spooky if you're a spookable mood, and can look silly if you're not in a spookable mood
>>
>>722606352
The problem is that actual horror is niche and zoomers only want mascot meme material shits.
>>
>>722606352
You're older. Go back and play shit like RE1/SH2, they're not scary whatsoever

>>722606352
Because horror games sucks since everyone has the stupid idea that the monster has to be seen so they can make use of their high end graphic cards.

Love SH f shoving the camera right up a monster's face when they introduce it, killing any ambiguity the monster might have had, just so it can do a big mean roar.

>2 never was.
I think that was the best part about SH2. I never felt scared I just felt alone, which made the character interactions way more memorable, and then the game made me feel even more alone when they turned on me or died. The solitude and longing for human contact was more powerful than being afraid and more in tune with the game's theme.
>>

I just replayed 3 and it's a nothing burger. Heather is fucking indestructible as a character, so you're literally never in any sort of danger.
>>
>>722609002
Games don't really work with horror for one of the reasons you've mentioned. Horror relies on stakes, permanent reprocussions, and the unknown. Very few horror games have any sort of true failure state.
>>
>>722606352
Just like horror films nobody actually wants scary games. They want "scary" games they can play on stream or with friends and they want memes.
Fearful atmosphere also requires tension and immersion which is too slow for modern ADHD.

I'm almost desensitized from horror in general, at most a couple of jumpscares still get me, but horror overall doesn't really affect me anymore. On the other hand, I really appreciate when horror games put a good amount of effort on their world and sound design, and it's my belief that good sound design can truly make or break a horror game. FAITH is really good for that for example, and just this weekend I played Dead Space and it was filled with so many barely audible yet still noticeable scary sounds in the background, it would always keep me on guard, but when it came to being loudly surprised by necromorphs, I would just instantly cap them without hesitation.

Games that only rely on jumpscares annoy me on the other hand, they're the cheapest form of horror they can use.
>>
>>722610823
I think if the horror in a game just boils down to nuisance then it's not particularly good horror

>t. had to go to the hospital after trying to play dead space
>>
>>722611234
Didn't Alien Isolation eventually sell well from word of mouth and thanks to streamers? Granted, I agree that the horror genre remains relatively niche outside of the usual series like Resident Evil, so investing too much on a horror game can be a gamble unless the game gains good traction from streamers shilling the game.
>>
>>722607497
I absolutely agree, only children would check under the bed. Thats absolutely ridiculous. The monsters don't hide under the bed or in your closet and i aren't even real. Stop being such a child, anon!

I still find SH1 highly scary especially the school.
I think it's because SH1's controls are actually harder to control than PS1 RE games. SH1 would actually be much easier if it had RE controls and fixed camera angles.
>>
>>722606352
These days I could be sitting in a dark basement with the Lament Configuration, but until the Cenobytes show up inflicting real life injury, I'm not able to get "scared".
>>
>>722606818
This is the biggest factor..
Though idk why, but for whatever reason while watching Weapons I felt genuine fear twice. Screamed like a retard in the comfort of my own home, wasn't altogether pleasant, but man it made me realize how fucking long it's been since I've actually felt that feeling of lack of control, adrenaline, and terror.

It's such a heavier lift trying to trick adults who have seen piles of scary movies/etc into being scared. I don't know what it was about Weapons, maybe the undertones of the narrative putting me in a state of immersion? Idk, probably most people who have seen that movie would laugh at that confession.
>>

You could do what the hellblade devs did and lie about permadeath to give the false sense of real stakes without actually having said stakes. It's scummy and only works once but it does get the job done.

The fear factor disappears once you're old enough to know there isn't any real danger.
You have to be willing to suspend your disbelief and get immersed if you wanna be a horror enjoyer.

try listening to ambience while going to sleep if you haven't yet
>>
>>722607624
why are horror games so adverse to subtle scares like this? Those moments where you sense something is off only to get a glimpse or soft sound of something is what really tingles that primitive fear response.
>>
>>722613670
What do you mean? Mortuary assistant is much more typical of 10s/20s indie games. The entire concept of job simulator games is a more modern concept since the more traditional attitudes of the industry during the 90s/10s would be that a game where you do a job would be boring.

You're not scared of things you're familiar with. True novelty is extremely scarce in this industry, hence why the primary way to describe a horror game is like "resident evil clone", "amnesia clone", "fnaf clone" et cetera.

I still think VotV is one of the better horror experiences out there. Getting immersed in the SETI satellite wagie sim gameplay for a week only to see some demon sprint through the woods while doing hash codes is still one of the spookiest moments I have ever had in a game.

>>
does anyone know of a horror game where from start to finish it isn't scary unless you go out of your way to find the scary shit?
>>
There is no such thing as a scary horror game
>>
>>722612625
Silent Hill games scare you in a different way, they don't throw thousands of enemies at you so you stop caring. They scare you with atmosphere, sounds, music and something unknown.
Expectation of something you cannot comprehend is much scarier than any boogey man.
>>
>>722615826
I think it's starting to get a little too silly and too many of the events are too obvious and invasive on your daily tasks.

I'm looking forward to that game where you operate a giant Sci Fi artillery gun, but I think that's supposed to be less spooky and more Papers Please.
>>
>>722616376
INFRA
You pretty much need a guide to find the one scary part.
>>
>>722616554
This is kinda true. The best horror moments are in games where horror isn't the main thing, you're just thrust in an unexpectedly dark and uncertain situation. That's kinda why Job simulator type games are so good at striking a balance at it. It gets you into a rhythm of a safe and predictable process and then suddenly you have to step outside of your comfort zone.

>>
>>722606352
The fear of the unknown is real horror. I've been playing modded minecraft lately and it really makes regular exploration kind of scary because of all the weird modded mobs you can run into at any given point.
>>
>>722616241

>>
>>722612856
It's why games like dead space 1 are so good. It's the right balance of ambience, lighting, good sound design, and building tension while sometimes having misdirection.

It's why so much modern horror is trash because it's relies too heavily on jump scares and gore
>>

What do you think is scary anon, you're supposed to share not just judge
>>
>>722620896
Not that anon, but I wouldn't consider Alien Isolation scary, but suspenseful. You know that the Alien exists and that you're alone in a ship filled with paranoid humans and killer android, so you already know what to expect as you move from area to area. The game is more about how it will attack you with those dangerous elements and how you have to stay on your guard at all times because of your almost inability to fight back. The xenomorph doesn't even jumpscare you outside of certain sequences, you always hear or see when it's coming so you know when it's the time to hide.

Not really, it's more that Twitch has been doing its best to alienate its non-paying viewership with unskippable ads, that and the place has become a shadow of its former self when the more popular streams tend to be camwhores. Youtube has actually become a better platform, but since it lacks the chat culture that viewers like from Twitch, not many have moved there yet.
