Playing other rougelites made me appreciate stuff like pic related and Nuclear Throne even more. It turns out that rewarding player skill and knowledge is actually quite rare in this genre. Par for the course is just mind numbing perk farming/ powering up slowly until you hit the final boss where the difficulty massively spikes. You can boil down the experience to basically being a giant boss run where you crank slot machines on the way.
