Why did Americans go with this design when the superior one already existed?
Was it the different coloured buttons that made it look like a baby's toy, so they went with the EXTREME purple instead?

Lance Barr, designer of the North American SNES quote

The Super Famicom was maybe okay for the market in Japan. For the US, I felt that it was too soft and had no edge. We were always looking at future modular components (even the NES had a connector on the bottom), so you had to design with the idea of stacking on top of other components. I though the Super Famicom didn't look good when stacked and even by itself, had a kind of "bag of bread" look.

Japanese studios all started going out of business during generation 5 and their arcade scene started disappearing as well.

In a Nintendo only reality, they would have dragged their feet on technology so hard that the GameCube would have been launching next week. I know there are lots of stories that Nintendo or America really wanted to keep the Super Famicom a secret and just continue supporting the NES for another 10 years. But competition from Sega and the Genesis really caused NOA to release the SNES much sooner than they wanted to.
