I'm thinking about getting a Rog xbox ally x for this holiday season, I'm planning on playing mostly indies/emulators and some AAA from before 2020, will it be alright?
I know that the steam deck is cheaper but being able to play Fortnite on it is a huge plus for me. Also I already have a gayming pc/switch/PS5 but I want to play on the bed/while waiting for my flights and no I don't care if I look dumb in public.

looks decent from all the specs out there but i wouldnt get anything like this until there are reviews but id get one if i wasnt to poor. you looked into any other handhelds? this is a good mid tier point but if you got money to splash there are better options

It's really unfortunate that "I want to play Fortnite" is the reason you're going to spend 300+ additional moneys, basically double, on a PC handheld over the Steam Deck.
I'd strongly urge you to reconsider. Maybe seek out a used rog ally, lenovo legion go, etc.
This isn't even about steam deck being good or anything, it's fine, but you even admitted you didn't need the extra horsepower so it just seems like a bad idea.
But I'll support you in whatever decision you make.

You're retarded, Valve's announcing the Steam Deck 2 with Half-Life 3 next year. Before you say "b-but the Steam Deck 2 is 2028", same guy says that AMD denied making a custom APU for Valve for the Deck 2, so Valve will instead use AMD's upcoming Medusa Halo Mini APU, releasing in 2027, made for gaming handhelds and is modular meaning Valve can disable some cores and compute units, have a lower RAM and get their generational leap and performance and efficiency that has a 8-15Watt power limit, similar to that of the original Steam Deck. Don't waste your money on a dead platform like Xbox, wait for the Steam Deck 2, it'll be worth the cash at an affordable price in 2027.

Do it anon.

As someone who went from Steam Deck to ROG Ally X it's so much better.
>>
>>722622912
Yeah I'm holding out as well, I believe it will be released next week and I'm planning on getting one next december which I hope is enough time for people to decide if it's a good handheld or not.
>>722622945
I know that it's a somewhat dumb reason but I travel for work a lot and it's the game that my wife and I enjoy playing together the most. I tried playing on the Switch and even though I don't care about grafix the performance was abysmal. Thanks I'll look more into it.
>>
>>722623458
The Xbox full screen experience is worse than SteamOS in every way.
>>
>>722623356
>on a dead platform like Xbox
It's funny you think it's an Xbox platform.
It's just the same as any other handheld Windows PC anon.

What about battery life, is it better on the ROG?
>>722623356
I really don't care about Half Life 3, I've only played the first one and that's because it was required for horror mods. I mean, even though Xbox is a zombie now I'm basically getting a mini computer.
>>722623519
How so?
>>
>>722623752
As long as you're getting an "extreme" version yes. The battery life is much much better. Comes with an 80Wh battery usually that completely dominates the 40Wh battery.
>>
>>722623752
>I really don't care about Half Life 3, I've only played the first one and that's because it was required for horror mods. I mean, even though Xbox is a zombie now I'm basically getting a mini computer.
One that's most likely not getting a continuation or any updates as Microsoft cares more about AI than gaming.
>How so?
Performance and battery issues weren't fixed while costing more with less games that are optimize for it.
>>
>>722623932
>Performance and battery issues weren't fixed while costing more with less games that are optimize for it.
Was fixed in 25h still in preview though atm.
>>
>>722623932
>One that's most likely not getting a continuation or any updates as Microsoft cares more about AI than gaming.
ASUS handles the updates anon.
My ROG Ally X gets like biweekly updates in the armory crate then of course standard windows updates as, get this.... it's a windows handheld and not seperate from anything.
>>
>>722623984
It wasn't, people are still reporting problems with it and the fixes will get less and less as Microsoft has shifted the Windows team off of gaming to focus on AI.
>>
>>722624147
On latest preview I left my rog ally x in game and pressed the powerbutton to sleep.
It lost 1% battery overnight and still managed to keep my game running.
>>
>>722622653
>I'm planning on playing mostly indies/emulators and some AAA from before 2020, will it be alright?
It'll be fine but you'll be wasting money, the Steam Deck can do that fine and it comes with trackpads that make it so much easier to play older games with no controller support.
>Fortnite
Then just install Windows on a Steam Deck.
>>
>>722624249
That's the Rog Ally X, not the Rog Xbox Ally X.
>>
>>722625438
Oh moving goalposts lmao
>>
>>722625875
Not really, Microsoft fucked up Armory Crate with their Xbox full screen experience on the Rog Xbox Ally.
>>
>>722626338
Hardly anon, they've moved armory crate to gamebar now.
Keep up.
>>
>>722626425
Are you seriously still a Windows/Xbox shill after everything Microsoft has done to gaming, at this point?
>>
>>722626584
Nah Im a gaming on windows is the superior option and always will be shill.
>>
I personally wouldn't buy Xbox-branded handhelds because the intention is for you to piss away money on Game Pass and cloud gaming. I'm not supporting that shit.
>>
>>722626923
Not on handheld, dipshit, that's why the Steam Deck owns this market.

>>722627019
Exactly, they do not give a shit about gaming and it shows.
>>
>>722627882
>Not on handheld, dipshit, that's why the Steam Deck owns this market.
No one owns this market anon.
Thats why there are a bazzillion handheld pc's
>>
>asus republic of gamers xbox ally x
genuinely one of the worst product names of all time
>>
>>722622912
>this is a good mid tier point but if you got money to splash there are better options
It's either this or the Legion Go 2, both released this month. Every other handheld uses older hardware.
>>
>>722627997
Steam Deck is at 5-6 million in sales while the rest of this trash can only have a combined sales of 1-2 million. This is Valve's market.
>>
you can play fortnite on a steamdeck as well, partition out a 150gb bit of the internal drive and you're fine, it's what I did to play cod, lost ark, destiny 2, fortnite, etc.
If you don't intend to make use of the power the ally x has over the steam deck, don't spend the extra money. Don't even buy a steam deck for fortnite, in fact, buy a fucking phone and a backbone.
>>
ROG Ally is already better on the princible that it's 16:9.
An aspect ratio all games ship with.
The 16:10 steam deck with it's black bars is shit.

Source?
>>
>>722631173
the same retard that said "They'll definitely have a wireless HMD to compete with the quest".
>>
>>722631251
Is he the same guy who thinks fortnite will work on Linux eventually because Tim is going to come begging to Gabe ?
>>
Steamies are legit mentally ill. OP made this thread specifically implying he needs windows and yet they still enter the thread screaming about how he needs to change his mind because he's a dumbfuck for not buying a steamdeck to save gaming and valve owns the handheld industry.
Absolutely mental.
>>
Get the Legion Go (doesnt matter which version frankly). Similar specs but a larger display.
>>
>>722622653
Or instead of buying this for $1000 you can get the existing Ally X for $500 with accessories and already put the Xbox Fullscreen Experience on it today with a single setting in Windows.
>>
>>722632445
>just find an open box best buy one or get used from Facebook
Yikes.
>>
>>722632684
What's the issue with that?
Besides the fried SD card slot, but that's literally affecting 100% of units so lol doesn't matter
>>
Why not just buy a lightly used Ally X instead? You'd be saving a ton, since the performance difference is almost negligible imo.
>>
>>722632804
Because 99% chance it has jizz on it.
>>
>>722631251
Not at all, I always had a feeling Valve wouldn't launch Half-Life 3 so soon, especially with a fucking VR headset. The idiots saying that were well, idiots.
>>
>>722633373
They have no reason to launch half life 3 at all. There's still no definitive proof it's even being worked on. The series is dead in the water man.
>>
>>722633440
There has been multiple proofs and leaks that it's being worked on, cope.
>>
>>722632684
>>722633187
I'm a trans double poster btw if that matters
>>
>>722634046
Just like there's been proof of Portal 3 and L4D3 since years ago. Stay mad.
>>
>>722635215
They're coming
>>
>>722630617
Only so far you can push handheld chips before you decide on destop chips.
>>
I wouldn't get the Rog Xbox
I have the Deck and the Rog Ally X and I use the Rog Ally X in bed almost nightly. Its fine for emulation. EmuDeck makes setup a breeze.
>>
>>722622653
when did these switch knock-offs become so popular?
>>
>>722623356
>>722631173
Deck 2 is 2027 at the earliest. At a minimum they need RDNA5/UDNA/whatever the fuck they're currently calling the next graphics architecture, and ideally they need much faster RAM to go with it. RDNA5 is confirmed mid-late 2026 tech and AMD is always a year behind with mobile chips.

It's unlikely Valve will get a custom chip for Deck 2, Deck 1's chip was custom but it wasn't actually made for them, it was recycled from a different failed project for another company. They fell ass-backwards into a ready-made design that was dirt cheap and optimized for 12-15W.
>>
>>722636576
Yeah, it's definitely 2027 now, the chip is pretty much just a cutdown Medusa Halo Mini, no reason or way for it to come any later unless the chip itself gets delayed.
>>
>>722623356
>Half Life 3
Grandpa forgot to take his meds again.

no
>>
>>722639245
Meant for
>>722636116
Guess I should also say that for "emulation" the 'eck or any OLED handheld is better by virtue of having a better display.
>>
>>722638763
It's coming
>>
>>722622653
Get the 'eck, don't be a loser.
>>
>>722622653
Absolutely, even some AAA from after 2020, but that’s a big price tag for mostly indies and emulators. If the steam deck is off the table, any windows handheld with comparable specs to the deck should be more than enough
