The PS2 was so omnipresent that there wasn't any need for a community to develop around it as a console or a brand.
Everyone had one. You could visit a friend and (s)he'd have one with some set of cheap games stacked up. All different from the ones you had, because the console was so open to developers.
The Gamecube basically failed as a console, or at least didn't perform as Nintendo wished. It also didn't have a lot of games, comparatively. So those that bought into them, stuck together and really focused on their small library of games.

Being so successful that you become invisible vs creating a cult fanbase.
Its like comparing people that drive Toyotas to people that drive Subarus.
