Where is this? Is this a room? Is Shepard breathing air here? How did the catalyst know about the kid? Why didn't the catalyst just kill Shepard right then and there?

Artificial atmosphere with mass effect fields.

Reapers groping around in Shepard's mind via attempted indoctrination.

Because they had won. They proved by uniting the galaxy against them and getting the crucible all the way to the Citadel that their solution wasn't needed anymore. Therefore it gives Shepard the choice for a new solution.

4. The well-meaning but skeptical council replaced with the obviously evil TIM
5. Heat sink weaponry replaced with thermal clips for military realism
6. De-emphasized wide scale planetary politics for character driven drama
7. Nasapunk aesthetic replaced with edgy James Bond in space and military grunginess
8. Dark Energy subplot unceremoniously dropped
9. Cinematography in the cutscenes clearly riffing on Michael Bay because that was the "cool" thing at the time
10. Atmosphere went from cozy Star Trek to bleak and brown Gears of War
