Every SH game after 2 placed less and less emphasis on the town to the point that you don't even visit it once in SH4. SH as a series changed to become more of an anthology of atmospheric psychological horror games because that was way less limiting than simply rehashing the same old setting over and over. It doesn't even need to strictly take place in the U.S either, SH had always used Japanese horror.
