One argument I've heard as to why the games look so bad is that there's TOO much money behind the franchise at this point to the extent where every creative and executive decision is probably made under the weight of a thousand focus groups, committees and endless red tape.Pokemon is a business at this point. It's not permissable for there to be a singular, dedicated creative vision who is given leeway. Similar to what you see with Marvel movies and other slop of that nature. There's too much riding on the financial outcome to permit a significant deviation from the well trodden paths and features that came before. The end result is a sort of Homer Simpson car which likely checks all the boxes on their internal spreadsheet at the expense of looking terrible and playing like shit.To be honest this makes more sense to me than the "they know you'll buy whatever dogshit they make" argument. I believe that within that company and organisation there are people who want to make a game that looks good, looks modern, is fun to play, and are who are willing to put in signfiicant creative effort to make that happen. I think there's just too much bureaucracy stifling them until it becomes impossible.

Other AAA devs all deal with this corporate risk-averse project management idiocy but at least have the sense to have headcounts in the high hundreds or low thousands, Gamefreak has barely 200 people and rely heavily on outsourcing to get anything done.
