It's a bit clunky but what it sets out to do, it does very well. It doesn't take itself too seriously and God knows we need more games that don't take themselves too seriously.

I don't think this game is THAT good though, it's pretty rough around the edges. I still enjoy it but it's not even close to being the best action game ever.

On top of this I should add that stranger allows you to cancel your combo mid animation to lead into an entirely different combo string or into a block/parry/soul shield with different combo contexts opening up depending on what weapons you use, e.g. a greatsword having a perfect guard that upon activating leads into it's own distinct combo (that you can customize)

The attack and dodge systems are really expressive and fun to work with, but using them can feel really jank until you get used to it. Thing is I don't know how I could fix it, the way the dodging works almost requires the shit tank controls the way the game has them. Could have a modifier button that gives you full movement and camera control while you're holding it, but I imagine you'd just eat shit while moving around by not letting go of the modifier fast enough to give access to dodges again.

backflip is basically a "shit i fucked up and have to retreat" option, you should use it as little as possible. with dodges and sidesteps, you can continue attacking right after evading.

I like that I don't have to worry about weapon switching autism like in DMC. God Hand was pretty much perfect for me, mostly about reaction time than memorizing button combinations. The only thing I think it could have done better is a lot of time it feels like the optimal strategy is to just run around in a circle then dive kick dudes.

I only beat the game on normal, its pretty hard but the flow when you master a segment is very satisfying. Thought that crowd control was impossible in the later stages and then I watched one combo video and realised I never used that built in heel drop to start juggles once.

The big issue is that difficulty selection effectively does nothing. If it actually helped the player (like Easy mode giving a flat defense upgrade or damage boost) then I think that the game would have a far more positive reputation instead of just being Youtube essay bait.

The abilities are supposed to be situational tools. Like you can kite enemies across the map then throw a projectile at at like 10 at once and one shot them all. This game isn't about combos at all, it's a routing game with some really basic looping for damage... like a beat em up.

There's nothing particularly impressive about it, it's just a game that Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden Black fans praise for being a hard game. It otherwise doesn't feel very good to control, due to how it's combat functions far differently than a lot of games. It's kind of why that IGN reviewer was clueless and scored it badly because he didn't know how the hell to play it. He sure did review it wrong, no doubt about that though. Just inexperienced and didn't understand it. That doesn't make it particularly impressive unless you're just interested in some hybrid arcade brawler combo masher game. It's the kind of game that could have gotten away with being in a real arcade cabinet and stole peoples quarters if Capcom had been smart about it instead of releasing it on console.
