Do you think the sub is worth it?
>>

jesus, 3.5 gb download? i need to let my computer run whole night for that
>>

yeah the characters are so hot dude!

>when they still had to distribute the WoW Client via bittorrent
SOVL
>>
>>722652051
At the time of WoW's release, 56k still was pretty common, so you're looking at several weeks of downloading, Ragnarok Online's 600mb took me 3 days to download.
>>
>>722651504
no way this basement nerd shit will ever get popular
>>
>>722653007
WoW and EQ2 came out when broadband was pretty common, which is why both had integrated voice chat. Dialupfags were shunned as the poors they were.
>>
>>722653007
Broadband was the new standard back then, DSL was still around but was considered the poorfag connection, 56k were considered absolute pariahs
>>
It used to be, for a time.
>>
>>722651504
jesus, soul overload. I wish those days never ended
>>
I get why subs existed back then, they needed that money for server cost. but what about nowadays? Literally inexcusable when they're owned by the biggest tech company, they may as well have infinite server space. Remove subscription costs, player counts would quadruple and people would eat up their shitty cash shop

Ye. Only white people had internet back then.
>>
dont subs normally go on sale for xmas?
it depends though.
my roommate subbed to WoW while in college, and he bombed alot of his courses. So in that respect he definintly lost money, by playing WoW late at night then missing class .
if youre a neet agoraphobic on gibs then its probably worth.

>>722653781
what about the japanese?
>>
>>722653814
Chinamen don't have PCs
>>
>>722653814
There were Jap international cables, but the amount of Jappus on the internet back then was low. Like most retarded people, it took the iPhone to get them on.

hahahahahhahaha
>>

>>722653884
but FF11 was released before WoW. surely the japanese would had internet back then .
>>
>>722651504
no
if I have wow itch I can either play on private servers or host my own with bots
>>
I never played wow
Is it still good? Is it really a huge addictive time sink?
>>
>>722653479
I remember people unironically giving 56k warnings up to like 2009 but I don't know if anyone was actually still on it
>>
Subs were worth it in vanilla when every major patch included shit like finished zones, new dungeons, new raids, and major class improvements, and the promise of continued content patches in the future. It became a ripoff once they just copied the everquest expansion model to make more money and suddenly the only thing you could count on from a major patch was a single raid opening and some class tweaks.

In the grand scheme of things server infrastructure costs absolutely fuck all to run, they didn't need subs for it.
>>
>>722653940
That was a PS2 game
>>
I played it but I stopped when burning crusades came out which is when I think it jumped the shark. However nowadays people seem to be nostalgic about that era and think it's "the golden age" so fuck all knows.
>>
>>722653007
>At the time of WoW's release, 56k still was pretty common,
absolutely not
what kind of third world shit hole are you from
broadband adsl and adsl2+ was widely available by that point
we had it by 2001/2002 and earlier than that people were using adsl connections at around 3 mbps

Fuck me, I remember reading about FFXI in game magazines for the PS2, but console internet was so fucking rare back then that I completely blanked it.

I remember seeing how you could play SOCOM online for PS2 using the adapter and I've never wanted anything so bad in my life
>>
>>722653965
>Is it still good?
No. Not even classic, because people and the way we interact on the internet aren't the same, private servers are only marginally better.
>Is it really a huge addictive time sink?
Yes. Like actual, physical addiction. I feel like a relapsing smoker whenever I play it on a private server every few years, but at least I'm not paying for it.
>>
>>722651504
I think you can play the Legion Remix thing with just a sub. Im thinking of doing that since i never played through Legion the first time
>>
>>722654131
I was big into EQOA. I have an account on Sandstorm now that they haxed it to be live again, but I haven't connected with a guild because I'm lazy.
>>
>>722654396
Can you connect to that server with an actual PS2? I still have a copy of the game.
>>
>>722654472
Yeah, but I'm not sure what the process is. They have details on their Discord, and I know for sure people are playing on real hardware (you might need it modded, but I don't know that, either).
>>
>>722654530
I'll look that up. Thanks, anon.

I've tried wow multiple times over the years with the very first time being when I was like 8 years old and the most recent being the launch of wow classic
genuinely can't even fathom how people enjoy it, queued skills feel like absolute shit and leveling is so dull that I never made it to a proper dungeon
>>
>>722653965
Classic a is magical experience. Especially if you played warcraft 3 right before it and you're 14. There's nothing like it.
>>
>>722655696
>WoW
>classic
Pick one.
>>
>>722651504
This shit invokes a primal feeling in me. I can practically smell and envision everything the way it was 20 years ago from this picture alone.

When StarCraft was released it took me an entire night to download the demo on 56k. My dad and I set it up before I went to sleep, and it was finished when I woke up. Still had to go to school before I could play it, but man was I excited. By the time WoW was out, everyone I knew was on broadband

This is a larp thread about nostalgia, stupid
same, though I'll try it out for the first 20 levels without a sub if it's jank

>he was a free trialer
haha I had my boxed copy before I even had a computer capable of running it, I then went and brought a GPU from a pc part store literally a 2 minute walk outside where I was living which is now just another real estate agent shithole in the wall instead of a failing pc parts shithole in the wall
the 2000s were crazy
>>722655696
is 100% right playing WoW after devouring Warcraft 3 & TFT was a magical experience
>>722653952
is also right the past is a closed country but you can sneak back in with playerbots in fact I'm planning a horde party right now to run through the game with right now gonna play it like an RPG
just need to decide on the undead's class

>Number one: In 1995 Indians made up 0 percent of game devs. Now they are about 95 percent.
>Number two: In 2000 90 percent of assets and programming for game development were done internally, now it's about two percent.

The internet was such a nice place when you had to be a tech inclined white/asian man with a desktop to access it.

As soon as women, thirties and Jews got their claws into it it turned from enjoyable gentlemen’s club cavalcade of fun to shit flinging town square red light district favela.
>>
>>722654108
I had 56k until 2005 in america. A lot of my friends still had it in the early 2000s. One of my friends' parents got a second phone line they wouldn't miss work calls when online.

>is it still good?
No. Modern wow is just meta chasing and filled with old, bitter failures who didn't get [X Achievement] in [Y Expansion] and are constantly chasing that high

>Is it really a huge addictive time sink?
Not so much anymore. Original How's stated goal was to be this, and kinda was back in the day. Things like the Grand Marshal/High Warlord grind were unironically addiction models, but they don't really exist today in modern wow. Modern wow is about getting you hooked on FOMO and running on the content/gear treadmill. People still play it addictively, but it's like a heroin junkie chasing that first high that will never be felt again.

>t. played from 2004-2018 and then no lifed Classic through to ulduar

Currently? It's not. Retail is mostly terrible and classic is a joke. Blizzard isn't using that money to maintain the quality of the servers, bots, gold sellers, retarded services, all allowed, fuck that.

It probably went through 50 encodings as it was being uploaded to various sites, downloaded and then uploaded again elsewhere
