Zeni is the only real bottleneck of the game but even then the battlepass gives enough for you to get the best characters fast.
Frieza, Goku and Cooler/Cell/Caulifla are all you really need to get to S

They said at the start of season 2, the S1 characters will be added to the Tier 4 character selection, and then keep dropping each subsequent season until they are in Tier 1

With that in mind, unlocking every Tier 1 character allows your selection be from Tier 2, and so forth, so I think it will be easier to catch up with released characters as a f2p than it initially seems
