Why do you think it sucks? It's a resource management game with a horror theme, and in that it succeeds well. It just needs more variety in the events and mysteries and such.

It's probably most similar to something like Lobotomy Corporation. If you like reading horror short stories and you like optimizing solutions then you'll like it, otherwise you probably won't.

I think what causes a lot of people to bounce off it is the combat. Unlike most horror games it goes for the Siren or early Silent Hill idea that you typically don't want to be in combat. It's not like a Resident Evil. You really have to judge whether combat is worth it or not and sometimes your best move is to run away. It's understandable that's not fun for some people.

If the enemy would do 3 damage, defending rounds it down to 1. Also, if you're at a point where you can't quite finish the enemy this turn, you can defend and do one attack (if your action speed is high enough) to minimize the damage you take before you win.
I don't know about the clap-bow stuff. I guess it's better if your weapon sucks at exorcising, but at that point I usually just run.

The game is a Roguelike. Roguelikes commonly have randomized elements like potions that do different things every run. For World of Horror it's the Clap/Bow ritual to banish ghosts. Every run the game randomly generates a sequence of 5 Claps and/or Bows (like Clap/Clap/Bow/Bow/Clap) and if you guess it correctly it auto-defeats ghosts enemies. It's the same for the entire run so if you figure it out early it's awesome. There's a mastermind like system of hints to figure it out.

As for Defend and Dodge, the game has a time based system with 200 time units for your turn and if I recall correctly both of those take 120 units. That means you can fit in other actions like a quick attack and then also defend/dodge after. That can be a good strategy if you need to minimize damage in a fight.

It's a typing-based game I'm making. The pitch is that if WoH was Arkham Horror then this moreso leans towards Oregon Trail (in trying to survive until an inevitable confrontation/takedown with a fragment or harbinger of an 'old god' and preparing beforehand).
There's also some other stuff I want to try and achieve with it, in creating a very robust framework, because one of the things that fascinated me with WoH was that sort of content creation system that never really got extended upon past events and character swaps with a preset (i.e. custom Old Gods, items, curses, etc) and I want to try and push it as far as I can go.

I think I started focusing on it like half a month-ish ago after two of my other solodev projects ran into spiritual deadends but there was a decent amount of stuff I learnt/could scrap from their remains. Other than a bunch of art/sprites to crank out, I think maybe 3-4 weeks, things are going pretty smoothly and I'm almost at a point where I can just start cranking out functional content (i.e. new enemies, events, items) easily
>equivalence to status effects/curses aren't implemented right now and are low-ish priority but shouldn't be hard to implement since it can be frankestein'd/abstracted as a non-directly interactable item
