Sell me on handhelds, /v/. Give me legitimate use cases for them, other than hurr durr you can play bido gaem while laying in bed
>>722684190I use mine at work.
>>722684190>hurr durr you can play bido gaem while laying in bedThat's a huge benefit. Instead of sitting or standing at your desk like an office drone, you can just carry this thing with you. And when you want to "sit down" you can just use a dock to connect it to a monitor, keyboard and mouse. It's basically like a laptop that fits in your pocket, but instead of a keyboard it has a controller.
>>722685480>you can just use a dock to connect it to a monitorOk, this is convincing me. How's the performance though? Not necessarily steam deck in specific, but handhelds in general.

A hacked 3DS is great for retro games, but it is VERY weak and I will probably have to find something better for mid range games. However I have problems being immersed and skilled in games anyways when I sit at a waiting room, bus or train because A it is very uncomfy and filthy and B you gotta watch out for muggers and backstabbers all the time. So I ussually REALLY suck at games when I play handheld.

With a die size of 163 mm2 and a transistor count of 2,400 million it is a small chip. Van Gogh supports DirectX 12 Ultimate (Feature Level 12_2). For GPU compute applications, OpenCL version 2.0 can be used. Additionally, the DirectX 12 Ultimate capability guarantees support for hardware-raytracing, variable-rate shading and more, in upcoming video games. It features 512 shading units, 32 texture mapping units and 16 ROPs. The GPU also contains 8 raytracing acceleration cores.

>>722687262The Steam Deck GPU is a gaming console graphics solution by AMD, launched on February 25th, 2022. Built on the 7 nm process, and based on the Van Gogh graphics processor, in its 100-000000405 variant, the device supports DirectX 12 Ultimate. The Van Gogh graphics processor is an average sized chip with a die area of 163 mm2 and 2,400 million transistors. It features 512 shading units, 32 texture mapping units, and 16 ROPs. The card also has 8 raytracing acceleration cores. AMD includes 16 GB LPDDR5 memory, which are connected using a 128-bit memory interface. The GPU is operating at a frequency of 1000 MHz, which can be boosted up to 1600 MHz, memory is running at 1375 MHz.Its power draw is rated at 15 W maximum. The console's dimensions are 298 mm x 117 mm x 49 mm, and it features a igp cooling solution.
>>722685626The Steam Deck is using an APU which is limited to 15W and most of it's horsepower was invested in the GPU side (even today it's still one of the best performing handhelds on 4W-15W loads). Any CPU-heavy game is going to perform like ass. I can give you a few of my personal examples:>HoloCure drops to 30-40fps on later stages due to the number of entities in the game (CPU is too weak to handle this)>Switch emulation struggles on demanding 3D games, but works fine on many 2D or 2.5D games>many 3D games require FSR to run at 60fps on it's display resolution (1280x800), so docking it to a 1080p screen won't be ideal>Path of Exile can't really run without making the whole screen a blur with it's dynamic resolutionHowever, a lot of games still work fine. Especially older games and consoles older than the Switch to the point they can even run on 2k resolution at 60fps just fine.Other handhelds are much more powerful, especially newer ones, but at the cost of battery and/or additional weight. However, they generally cost 700-1500 USD. So it's up to you to decide on your budget and preferred performance. You can check benchmarks online, but keep in mind that most handhelds that get released within 9 months of each other usually have the same CPU so they generally perform very similar. In which case it's up to you to decide on the form factor. However, at some point you have to ask yourself if it's worth investing too much into a handheld. GPD just dropped GPD Win 5 which is a complete overkill and costs 1600. At that point it's actually much better to just buy a $1200 desktop PC and a sub-$500 handheld and just use Sunshine+Moonlight to stream from your own PC.>>722686078https://bazzite.gg/>>722686618You're delusional if you think anyone is putting handhelds into their pockets. You think anyone carried their PSP in a pocket?>Kids are small and have smaller pockets>adults have a lot more shit in their pocketsPeople just use bags.

Whats the most advanced console that the deck can emulate well?
>>722684075Fucking hell it is the endgame of gaming so much so that I don't think I would even buy Deck 2 if it came out. There's just no realistic and meaningful enough room for improvement. It's just such a good all-rounder and other UMPCs proved that while certain shortcomings of the Deck could be improved on they come at a price - often literal price. Any realistic improvement for the Deck can only come from software at this point.
>>722691497>see girl>think of tranniesits unironically over for you
>>722693743>PS2, GameCube, Wii, 3DSI think all of these work perfectly.>Xbox, Wii U and PS3These 3 also work, kind of. A handful of games from these consoles require performance patches. Meanwhile PS3 emulation is still not as mature as most other systems. Wii U is probably the best supported among these 3.>SwitchI'm pretty sure at least half the Switch games work fine at 60fps. Most others are either hovering around 50-60fps, or are running at around 35-40fps and you need to tinker a bit to get them to a playable framerate. The problem with Switch is the fact that emulator development got kinda fucked when Yuzu and Ryujinx got bullied out of the market by Nintendo. So for a while there were 6 different emulators, none of which had any development being done on them and were just rebranded Yuzu or Ryujinx. Recently there have been some performance improvements and hopefully now that Switch 2 exists the original Switch emulator development can pick up without Nintendo raping people over it.

I want them to succeed because, like the late 2000s/early 10s, it'll force developers to optimize for them first.
