reposting cause the last thread died right away and nobody saw my webm lol

Just got done implementing this new enemy type. I like it, it's a bit of a pain to fight but not overly so. I also got a subtype that shoots so that should be fun.

I already posted this on aggy, but here we go again. The next wagie run progress i made is an upgrade to the checkpoint mechanic

I made the checkpoint as 2 speedbumps, with nearby surveillance camera looking at the player. It will take a snap when the player cross the checkpoint, and change it's spotlight from yellow to blue.

That floating checkpoint text is just a placeholder for future design. Im not an artists lol, so i dont know whats good to be placed there. Maybe like a green street sign, or a "slow down" monitor, but with "checkpoint" text on it?

>>722698683
Thats actually my first plan. The goal is "canned unhealthy caffeinated drinks", so its either energy drink or cola soda, and i happen to find a 3D cola can first, instead energy drink can, in unity asset store. So i used it instead kek
>>
>>722698546
All of the games I've worked on have been hard so yeah I think so. It just depends how you handle it, most players can accept hard games as long as it's fair and they aren't overly punishing.

I haven't implemented game overs yet, but I think it'll just be a simple mechanic where you get unlimited continues but your score gets cut by 25% or something.
>>
>>722698609

nothing I can show, but I can tell you about it: I added support for 3D audio and with that my audio manager is done. I've made a list of all the sounds I need and am slowly integrating them into the game. I'm also a bit sick (sudden weather changes always fuck me in the ass) so progress has been slowed down

You see stories like Eric Barone, who essentially learned gamedev from /vg/ and I think, "Maybe I should do that." Then I see some of the abysmal dogshit that other anons post on 4chan, and I realize I shouldn't bother, because that's far more likely what I'd end up making.

The game was set in a pre-dystopian era, where the world are JUST starting to transform into a sad modern reality. The mechanic is, health heal happens with 10 soda cans or 1 cup of coffee. The premise is, at that setting, "real" coffee is a luxury product

I managed to make my guy do a walk cycle. Unfortunately, I also found out I have to manually set the color palette on Windows Vista, 7, and 8. So now I have to figure out how to do that. I also still have yet to work out a way to do display scaling for GPUs that don't support low res screen modes. And on top of all that, I don't have a way to record demo footage since my system is too slow to screen record and I can't capture with fraps due to it not using Directx or Opengl.

Gonna try playing some of the fan games now but who knows where I will go next . Maybe I'll play Arkham origins instead and let my downloads rot for a while before I suddenly decide on a whim to play them. That's how I clear my backlog anyways. the art style for this is so good, the black background makes me nostalgic for DOS, while also being reminiscent of mosaics/textiles

Impressed you got so far! Besides the placeholder stuff the fact that it looks like everything is working as intended is neat. I also like the sun going behind the building.

That being said, Pepsiman has a ton of humor, moments to break up the gameplay, catchy music and a bright and fun color palette to keep it engaging. For how simple the core gameplay is, it actually seems like a really complicated thing for 1 person development if Pepsiman is what you're going for.

Started KIngdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning and Gears of War: Judgment recently.
Kingdoms of Amalur feels like a 6/10 game that could have been something much more. The combat is pretty fun, but enemy variety, lack of RP options and MMO-tier sidequests are ruining it for me. To be honest, I only keep playing for my elven waifu Alyn Shir.
Gears of War: Judgment is pretty good, not much worse than the og trilogy so far.

In my deep unhappiness traversing these musky halls, filled to the brim with the piercing whistles of steam valves long rusted over, I pondered briefly to myself: what is it that drives humankind to embrace such infatuation with these...block puzzles? These overly abundant cube-based riddles posed a severe cognito hazard even to a vampiric wraith such as I who could punt them around with ease, let alone a mortal man (who would struggle even with generous assistance), to shove even a single one. Perhaps this was all a part of Kain's great design to break my will and spirit alike, that it was he who placed them here, so that I may grow so enervated that my desire for justice and knowledge simply fades along with my mental acuity...

I have a souls-like framework built.
Making a full souls-like as an indie seems like a dumb idea.
So my thoughts were either:
>Turn it into a multiplayer dungeon crawler with randomly generated dungeons
or
>Turn it into a Risk of Rain 2 style game with multiple worlds you jump between while difficulty is constantly increasing

Both lean into the rogue-like element to give me the ability to focus on adding more enemies, bosses and weapons instead of spending a ton of time on level design.

Been working on improving enemy AI in my game. Enemies can now dodge and block the player's attacks and can tell if the player is turned towards them, and will try to circle the player if so.
It's jank as fuck but it's getting there.

this is a good idea. also RoR2 doesnt have randomly generated terrains, I think its the same level every time you play but things like the gates to the next level get randomized.

I have a million ideas bouncing around in my head for games, but can't seem to actually sit down and try to make one. How do game devs do it?
>>
>>722770317
You pick one and try. You probably fail to get anywhere several times, but you keep trying. Over time, you get used to the method, and make more, better progress.
I had the same feeling as you for many years. One thing that helped me was to work on gameplay and very general things at first, such that I could switch projects and copy my old work. Like that I kept making progress even though I often changed focus.
Most importantly, stop being an idea guy and actually work on something.

-----Bug Fixes-----
>Widgets
>fixed a bug that removed the interaction widget after picking up an item but still within collision range of others.
>fixed main menu button focus to properly land on either continue or new game button depending on if save files exist.
>fixed button focus when leaving save/load slot selection widget.
>deleting all saves correctly animates both continue and load buttons correctly.
>touching the screen or clicking with the mouse focuses new game or continue (will update to reflect current active button)
>added b button cancel functionality to confirmation widget and will land on the same save/load file upon pressing the b button.

Made a few strides.
>corrected several visual issues with sprites (about 30 of them)
>made some movesets for about 20 monster girls
>revamped the entire buff/debuff/effect system
That last one was quite the change!
I used to have effects as an enum with stock values until I ran into having too many of the same effects but different parameters.
Like +25% damage for 2 turns as opposed to +50% damage for 3 turns and so on...
So I revamped the entire system to use a string with parameters.
So now you map it as
>Attack+
>".25,2"
And the enum will get switched to read the parameter string properly.
A function within a function.
Otherwise there are too many different variations to keep track of...

Next:
>buff/debuff signatures
>buff/debuff stacking
>seasonal sprite variations
See picrel

It shows we don’t need to kowtow to these dark times in the gaming industry where we suffer from terrible games with outrageous budgets and monetization practices. Thanks anon, the (default) magic system I was thinking this:
- There is a semi-binding slot for a magical item, which may be a: codex, grimoire, scroll, sigil, other trinkets
- You "fill" pages with the n-spells, which makes you also want to not fill them with useless or less powerful spells, or consider your combinations more wisely
- A boss might drop a codex with a greater number of empty pages, or a powerful/rare spell
Other than that I was thinking I would expose a {key:value} definition for the server host to do take the available spells and do something similar to runescape with a magic level and required runestones per cast

99% of those are retarded, mostly because they try to be a one size fit all solution in fucking engineering.

>How do you get over
You time that part of the code.
If the optimization is garbage but it's still only accounting for nothing out of your total frame time, you shouldn't care about optimizing it.
Can't remember which book about C++ optimization tricks had a line from Carmack saying that it's better to make the code that account for 90% of execution time faster by 10%, than making the code that account for 0.1% faster by a million times.

managed to bring a custom entity property from Trenchbroom and include it as metadata of the generated nodes. This is great because it will let me determine which footstep sound to play when walking over different brush entities. Sad part is that I had to make a small modification in func_godot's code, so if I ever update it I will lose it but it's just 2 lines of code so no biggie I guess. Nah, it doesn't learn while you're playing, it's just a pre-trained model. I just made it race against itself to learn. I looked into doing something that can learn while you're playing but man that went way over my paygrade. Would have to gather tons of data while playing and include it in the model. Not really feasible in a racing game, as far as I can tell. Plus, this project had a set deadline, I finished it in about 4 months.
I was going to add a ship inspired by pod racers too.

Here's a look at one of the characters in my most recent render: Scalefeather. This flying serpent is a monster that appears during Fygoon's adventures in exile, guarding the Realm Gem of Air. As you can see, this character has existed for some time, and though I have art concerning this beast in a more modern, realistic style, I realized while modeling him that his massive, frog-like maw is important (even if, like all of the boss characters Fygoon finds in exile, are modeled after the visage of a certain Dinosaur).
Just thought I'd share this.

Try some tutorials, see if you can get anywhere. It will be very challenging, but will be very rewarding if you stick with it. Mind you it will likely take years before you get confident in actually coding yourself. You have nothing to lose by trying.

The game's plot concerns the young Dragon and the player's character, Joseph Fygoon. When he turned ten, this young Dragon was crowned the Basileus (or king) of Frydar Island after his father passed; in the five years since, the Dragon had become obsessed with his family's history, as his ancestors all went on extravagant adventures to defend the island kingdom from both domestic and international threats (for instance: Joseph's dad, Basileus Daniel Fygoon, drove away the Banana Lord Mons when he attempted to destroy Frydar Island over "transgressions against the Banana Republic"). Consequently, young Joseph Fygoon, seeking to emulate his forefathers, desires an adventure of his own and takes his friends Alois Ratatosky (the Squirrel) and Balthazar Lux (the Lynx) as his personal army; since there hasn't been any real threat since the Banana Crisis, Fygoon elects to start his own adventures, pitting himself against his own subjects in a vain attempt to forge his own legacy. Of course, this makes him very unpopular with the people (you wouldn't be very fond of someone cutting your best friend to bits, would you?), and so the animosity between Fygoon and his people grows with each "adventure"; not only that, but Fygoon's insistence on going on these quests causes Fygoon's advisor and father figure, Minister Shen, to take the brunt of these misgivings at the hands of the Viceroys that should be answering to the young Dragon.
While on one such adventure that you get to play (Fygoon plans to steal a religious artifact from the spiritual Golems), a conspiracy begins to form between an unknown force from beyond the horizon; with help from the disgruntled Viceroys, this menacing beast seeks to overthrow Fygoon and claim the Kingdom of Frydar Island, and ultimately the planet, for himself. It is up to Fygoon to finish his silly adventure and try to stop the conspiracy before it is too late.

You can learn c++ ez with https://www.learncpp.com/ if you actually read and follow it, combined with your favourite ai to further explain any questions that you have. For learning program it’s best to write some very simple games or programs first, until you’re at the point where you’re comfortable with the syntax and control structures available in c++. Neat. The first game I made was a really crappy adventure game featuring Joey Fygoon and it was done in the AgentCubes engine. Tore through my dev plan for the day faster than expected.
>Made a system for enemies' stun animations to respect direction of attacks.
>Player's attack can rebound if hitting an enemy who is blocking.
>Added an attitude system to make enemies more aggressive or more cowardly, which controls how eager they are to attack versus dodge, block and circle around
Now what? Sun is shining, autumn colors are lovely. Guess I'll go for a walk and figure out next steps.

Very good! I am finishing up the targeting system, cleaning up more ui bugs, and finally getting to attack and animation locomotion. I'm glad I save the fun stuff for later.
Ha I remember shiny blue mushrooms, keep up the progress!
>>
>>722829071
Good stuff my dude. Targeting systems can be hard to deal with. Mine was working perfectly when I made it, but at some point it broke and keeps dropping the target.

Mine refuses to clear the array of an enemy it is so annoying but im definitely getting close. I build my stuff with like 1 working function I need to stop doing this. I have to multitask or i go crazy doing just 1 thing. At least the creepy mystery target is finally gone...I hope.
UI stuff is such a pain, I tried widget switchers but ended up calling the widget directly as references weren't passing correctly. One thing I learned in unreal is to build a parent reference on the child widget that is a self parent reference when creating the child widget via the parent, so I can directly manipulate 4 levels down if I need to. This is how I was able to fix the animation transition when leaving the load menu because I referenced the continue and new game buttons and animations from the child selection widget. Sorry if I rambled a bit there. I have mkre fun talking about the backend than showing fun graphics lol.

Entirely too goddamn long, anon. Entirely too goddamn long. My earliest notes for the current build (which was started from scratch) go back to 2021. But webm related is from a separate build which I abandoned for a few years and then eventually restarted from scratch; the first work on the FIRST build of the game is from 2014 IIRC.

On the other hand I never devoted myself to the project, I've had a full time job the entire time, this is a spare-time hobby project for me. So it's not like it's actual Silksong levels of labor invested into it.

9 months is nothing, ESPECIALLY if you're not doing it as a full-time job and the game has any kind of meaningful ambition (i.e. not a simple breakout clone to teach yourself how gamedev works).

My benchmark for productivity as a person with a job and a family doing shit for fun for a few hours a day in my bedroom is Pixel. It took him 5 years of free-time work as a bored salaryman to make Cave Story. Granted he didn't start with an engine and tools (as I did) but he also made a mechanically simple 2D sprite-based game where most of the labor invested was just cranking out art assets. And his job was as a programmer, because he studied it in college; I run a grocery store, I taught myself programming for the project (along with 3D modeling and animation).

Making video games takes a long time. Just do the work and don't stress about how long it takes. I'm 37 now, even if I release the game when I'm 45 I'll still be younger than Miyazaki and Kamiya were when they released some of their best action games to date and I'm sure my reflexes won't be so dull I can't enjoy it.

Aztez was a masterpiece and peaked at like 2000 players. All Day Dying went free just because the anon who made it figured "I've sold as many copies as I possibly can, this is the only way to get more players and I want people to play it".

I'm not doing this for money. I'm doing this because I have a game inside me that needs to get out. If I make enough money to pay for the fees to put the shit on Steam I'll consider it a financial success. I really just want people to play it and love it. My dearest, sincerest hope for the game is that it can develop a tiny community of dedicated modders, so that I can experience the joy of playing the game without knowing everything about it, because I can experience it through the lens of content I didn't build and thus know inside and out. This is not my job. I have a job. I don't aspire to work as a game developer.

I think the biggest problem with the Genokids EA is that what makes Genokids unique and interesting is the tag system. Outside of that, it’s maybe a good game, but not a fresh game. Action games are making a comeback and there are some very strong offerings either out or arriving soon that can entertain genre fans. People will still get value out of Genokids, but that’s because it has a unique gimmick that sets it apart.

The problem is, the EA hides that gimmick. Only having 2 of 4 main characters playable means you don’t really even get to experience what makes the gameplay special in the first place, which is experimenting with the tag system. You have this awareness that whatever you DO play, you’re just gonna end up playing it again as new functionality is added. You aren’t going to progress through the EA in episodic fashion, getting chunk after chunk of a linear experience. The experience you ARE presented isn’t even feature/content complete.

I think that works against it. EA works better for fully complete vertical slices that add “later” parts of the game. I don’t think Genokids has a complete vertical slice yet. Maybe that isn’t true, maybe the game adds characters as the levels advance, but that isn’t really the sense I get.

I'm beginning on the process of replacing some of the placeholder assets. For instance, here are the see-saw platforms that I had before. They were always meant to be Solar Panels, as the entire theme of the level is energy generation (hence the windmill and the geothermal plant).

Dang, that's the good stuff. I think you ought to fake a reflection of Osh in there but it's still looking nice with those clouds reflecting in it.
>>
>>722848058
So, my design philosophy is that I want two level themes in every level. Like, in this level it's grassy plains, then you go into the Geothermal plant and it's lava. So, my current planned ones are:
-Icy Woods with a Haunted house in it
-Top of a Castle where if you go high enough, you launch into Cloud land.
-Desert with a watery oasis in it, where the Oasis leads to an underwater city.

>>722848162

Took me 3 days but I have finally finished my complex cutscene manager. Now I can enable/disable cutscenes depending on anything I like, including having certain item in the inventory, having active/completed/failed quest, state of other cutscenes etc.
In this example the last cutscene only shows when the second cutscene is finished. You can see how I tried to activate it before the second cutscene, and it's just not available.

God that's so discouraging. Aztez looks better than anything I could make. I wouldn't really be doing gamedev for money (though money would be nice) but I would at least want people to play the game. Putting so much work into something just for no one to notice is petrifying.
>>
>>722845051
Blends are generally terrible for attack animations, because attack animations aren’t “states” they’re “actions”.

A good rule of thumb, IMO, is if the character isn’t going to remain in an animation loop for an indeterminate period of time, it shouldn’t be a state. It should be an animation asset you play once via reference. In UE this is done with montages; IDK how it works in Unity (is that Unity?) but a similar system exists. That way you can keep a large table of anim references, and go
>play [sword_heavy_4]
And not have to worry about managing transition logic. State machines are for handling
>you can be running
>or falling
>or swimming
>or crouching
>or climbing
And the logic and transitions between those.

Hey there, Salaryman Shi dev.
>>
>>722855080
That's a good rule of thumb, gonna save your advice and look it over tomorrow.
My problem is I didn't plan any of it out, I just made an animation, put it in Unity's animator, made it transition from say Idle to Walk and back based on a bool. Then I kept adding more and more animations and connecting them with transitions, until it became that abomination you see there. Now it's too complicated to manage.
Been designing the new system today, shouldn't be too much of a hassle to implement.
>>
>>722856278
hello
>>
>>722856781
If Unity can (it probably can) it would behoove you to nest state machines. I.e. a state machine handles the transition between being grounded and airborne, and within the grounded state is a separate state machine that handles the transition between standing, walking and running. That sort of thing. Especially if you find that you’re getting exponential connection issues (every state you add now needs a connection to every OTHER state, even though it doesn’t have any special transition relationship with those states)
>>
>>722857162
>exponential connection issues
Yeah, pretty much. It's not quite that bad, because I have a few "connector" states, like a combat idle pose, which connects to all combat states, plus you can allow transitions to be interrupted by a later state, so it can skip a few steps here and there. For example if you do a melee attack it will return to combat idle when it's done and can then go to casting spells, so you don't need to connect attacks and spells directly, and this multi-step transition is instant. Overall it's still not manageable, and I would need even more states to accomplish what I want to.
Also, Unity has an annoying feature when you are playing the game and have the animator open, it will focus the animator window on the currently active state, so it becomes hard to analyze problems with transitions, since it keeps jumping around.

>----Targeting----<
>set an initial target check to see if the array of target actors has more than 1 to move widget to new target, otherwise ignore switching. This in turn fixed a weird target widget popping up off in the distance when switching targets.
>target switching now has a float cool down that compares game time to the last target float to stop rapid target switching without using delay nodes that would cause latency.
>dead enemies are now properly removed from the array pool and switching targets checks each time it is ran to refrain from targeting dead ones.
>camera transitions between switching targets has been cushioned to stop immediately jerking between targets.
>camera movement fully disabled to prevent jiggle with switching targets.
>distance float configured to keep enemies too far away from getting added to the array.
