I am going to use savestates to beat this and won't feel bad about it.
>>722711532Play it like God intended, Japanese version but with no save states
>>722711072Castlevania is my favourite Castlevania
>>722711072I like Ecclesia better.
>>722711072This one's up there.
>>722711072Probably same but I've played it, sotn and aos so much I'm completely burnt out. I liked OOEs magic system. Shame most of the maps were underwhelming. Incredible that the morons at konami didn't fix luck in the soma games with the re-release,
>>722711072But OP you already posted it. Castlevania 1 on NES if I had a second choice. I like the simplicity of it.
>>722711532This game has an outright fetish for stairs so I really cant blame you, especially when its a pain to use subweapons while on stairs.
>>722711072I really liked circle of the moon
>>722717207This, Symphony, and Portrait are Top 3 of the map-centric games imo
I don't like OoE anymore...
>>722711072Portrait of Ruin taking a more comedic route was an interesting choice.

>>722717207I like this game better than SotN but the soiboys with journo-tier tastes are gonna crucify me for saying that
>>722717896In the same vein that Geese here looks like somebody concerned for your well-being based on something he just heard you say, Trevor (Ralph, whatever) looks utterly confused as to why you would ever say anything like that.
>>722717207>>722717347My opinion on OoE and CotM did a full 180° after replaying them. I liked OoE the first time but hated it the second time, and I hated CotM the first time but loved it the second time. I still think my 2nd playthrough opinions are more valid but I fully understand why both OoE and CotM are considered polarizing.
I've played a small amount of 1, 2, and 3 but beat none of them. I have "beaten" Aria of Sorrow but I used that overpowered sword and likely got the easiest ending you can get, never tried to fight any other version of the end boss. I'm simply too much of a pussy to bang my head against the classic games and deal with deaths and game overs.
New retrospective dropped, bro actually did his homework.https://youtu.be/X6mREbpmDd8?si=oMbRrnVDoTs327Ls
>>722711072Dawn of Sorrow is my favorite, the Dominus Collection version, since it fixes magic seals
>>722721072>since it fixes magic sealsExplain. I might pick it up if it removed the worst parts of the original Dawn of Sorrow.
>>722711072SotN >> Rondo >>>> DoS > SCIV >> PoR >> AoS > Bloodstained > CotM > HoD > OoE >>> CoD
>>722721481disgusting nigger tastes
I don't know how anyone could prefer Dawn of Sorrow, those drop rates are absolutely fucking abysmal and it's slow as fuck even by Castlevania standards.
>>722721205You can use button presses instead now. I didn't find it much better desu. There's also that touch screen-based powerup that you can use with the right analog stick instead.
>>722722034Alright, thanks for the reply. Disappointing, but I still have the original DS game so I'll just stick with that. Thanks.
this is the greatest vidya franchise of all time and REAL niggas know this is the ordained month to play as many as you can
>>722722169Yeah, when I heard they were "fixed," I was hoping they were removed completely, which there's already a mod for. As-is I generally prefer using the touch screen and I'm glad the Switch version keeps that functionality in portable mode.
>>722711072Aria of SorrowOrder of EcclesiaSymphony of the NightAll S-Tier
>>722718423Famicom CV3 music is of better quality than the NES version due to extra sound channels
>>722719807>Actually bringing up Akumatsu, MSX Vampire Killer, and Curse of ManGood shit despite how bizarre the title is.
>>722711072What a terrible artWhat retard greenlit this? Why such disgusting art direction?Looksnlike it was drawn by a kid
>>722723540>Wahh wahhhThe game looks cool and is fun as fuck
You know what? Fuck it.I liked lords of shadow.
>>722723601Why did they hire a retard to make the official art tho?
>>722723693They were trying to appeal to shounen tards, not all the art was bad
>>722711072I remember way back in the day /v/ had the "Castlevania Challenge" zip file. Had every Castlevania up to The Adventure ReBirth and even had the extra stuff like Order of Shadows and some Tohou games that were CV themed.God I wish Harmony of Despair was on Steam, having yearly dives into it with /v/ would be amazing.
>>722723540Iga actually said in a interview they were trying to gain the interest of younger players that may be scared off by Ayami Kojima's art.
>>722723939Japs are so retarded when they try to chase trends
>>722723630If it didn't force Xbox inputs for all qte on the pc version, perhaps

>>722724031Castlevania wasn't exactly lighting up the sales figures back then.Idk what the fuck they were thinking with Judgment, gameplay aside it visually doesn't sell me that this is Castlevania and the characters hardly resemble their original counterparts.
>>722717207Just replayed it. Double tap to dash, the card drop rate is super low, 70% of the combos are useless, and the map is really shittily designed. There are a few one-way doors that fuck you, not enough warp points, and giant vertical shafts that are annoying in the early game. Also the cross is utterly broken and trivializes every boss. 3/5, decent RPG Castlevania.
>>722711072>lost my hard drive with the Castlevania Challenge Pack>all links for it in the archive are deadPlease someone tell me they have it. You know the one, it used to circulate all the time in these threads back in 2023.

>>722724194Why is OoE literally the only one of these games that makes me feel something?
>>722726236You're just horny for Shanoa.
>>722717207I think it's definitely shit, but it would've been great to have a sequel. I'd be willing to chalk up a lot of it to early hardware blues, since it was a launch title and Iga's own team had trouble adapting to the hardware, as evidence by HoD also being kinda garbage. At the core of it, Nathan's moveset is great for a more Belmont-feeling entry in the Metroidvania lineage, with a lot of deliberate movement, and even his dash being a much more committal charge than any normal backdash, making fights simple but tense challenges that are remind one a lot more of Classicvania instead. I think the drop-driven way you get items isn't too bad either, as while you can and WILL get screwed, I think it's ultimately better than how other games let you buy and stack mad amounts of healing to be basically immortal.A sequel with a better castle, more meaningful upgrades, and a better take on the way you gain cards, and that game would've been a 10/10 classic. There's even justification in this "what could have been" since, even though Iga was oddly pissed about using tarot cards for magic spells, he basically copied the system twice with the Magic Combos of HoD and the Enemy Souls of Aria
>>722726236Narrativewise it's among the best of the Castlevanias with a deeply personal story. Shanoa is a likeable character despite literally having no personality and her story is about trying to stop a force of evil as an NPC without holy blood/god blessings. The fact that she ends up being forgotten by history despite literally saving the world and possibly reviving the Belmont clan is tragic.
So if they did a 3D Collection, should the bonus game be Chronicles or Vampire Killer?
>>722711072Castlevania 1,3, bloodlines and rondo of blood. Not a fan of the low tier metroids
>>722725523Bless you
That's one thing that bothered me about Portrait of Ruin. How did John die from using the Vampire Killer if Bloodlines literally said he was a Belmont descendant?
>>722727379Either a retcon or some localization shenanigans where the western release calls him a Belmont descendant but not the original japanese.
>>722726563A remake of Dracula's Curse to bridge the narrative gap between LoI and CoD.
>>722727379Originally the Morris clan were distant cousins with their own whip (Vampire Killer)The Belmonts had their own whip (Death Mercury)Iga retconned things to make PoR work as a sequel to Bloodlines and it never actually explains why the Belmonts couldn't touch the whip until 1999.Even though Reinhardt Schneider is a full blood descendant and used the whip in 1850.Whole thing is mess really.
>>722729085Aside from some generic prophecy or something, I wonder what would be a good explanation for the Belmonts not being able to touch the whip till '99. We could say that getting Richter getting shafted made the vampiric side of the whip too strong but why stop at '99 in particular? Or would they have to change the story again by saying that the whip went back to normal in '99 just from Julius' efforts rather than there being some arbitrary expiration date for the curse.
>>722729534To add to this, the one retcon I'd like to see is that Leon and Sara already had a kid before the events of Lament. That way the VK carries the soul of the mother to the entire Belmont clan. As it is it's just great-great-great-great-great grandfather's first girlfriend. Not quite as meaningful.
>>722711072anyone tried chronicles of the wolf? heard good things, but haven't had the chance to sit down and play it myself yet
>>722725523Based
>>722729534I also thought the explanation was Richter self-imposed the entire Belmont Clan to exile to purify their souls. That's why the Belmonts in OoE were hidden as they were. That's why the Schneiders and Morris' carried the Whip until then. Plus the whole Nostradamus predicting Dracula dying in 1999 for good probably was Richter thinking "Shit, can't let me or any of my descendants get corrupted again until then." And that's why Julius was as powerful as he was, because he'd had been fully purified. My head canon though is that Johnathan's kid tried to take on Dracula on his own in 99, which sets up the story of Julius trying to get the whip back in time to defeat Dracula at New Year's
>>722731008That's a whole lot of headcanon.
>>722731057Probably, but considering Konami doesn't give a shit any more it's the best explanation to me.
>>722731008That's a fun headcanon.>Brash, young Johnathan Jr. tries to take on Dracula himself because the Belmonts are nowhere to be found>News reaches Julius who's going through his own rituals to purify his soul>Rushes towards Dracula's castle to save the kid with some added risk that the Belmont's soul isn't cleansed yet and could once again fall under Dracula's control>Special game mode with a timer to defeat Dracula before New Year.
>>722711072Not sure if it's my favourite, but it's the one I find the most fun to play
>>722731375>>Special game mode with a timer to defeat Dracula before New Year. That's exactly what I was thinking of when thinking about it. Plus a fight between Julius & Johnathan Jr, possibly with the Belnades descendant trying to calm Junior down. All with the backdrop of a unified World army of soldiers shooting at monsters & demons, with the soldier base as the store for items.
>>722731572It's fun to think of stories for 1999. One I had was that Julius has the VK but after the events of SotN the VK slowly kills everyone who touches it, Belmonts included. In 1999 Julius sees Dracula is back and despite the curse still goes for it. As you explore the castle Julius encounters the spirits of past Belmonts, culminating in Sara, the mother of the entire clan, the very spirit of the VK. Sara could even be a boss fight as Shaft's curse had driven her mad, causing the curse in the first place. From them he regains strength and finally breaks the curse.A special game mode could be the health constantly draining but recovering from each enemy killed.I think it'd be fun both as this big celebration/fanservice for the franchise as well as this major explanation for a lot of the questions that have been left confusing for a long time. Now if only Konami gave me 50 million dollars to make it happen.
>>722731979>>722731572Now that I think of it we could even blend the two stories.>Julius initially refuses to go after Dracula because he's still trying to cleanse the VK>Johnathan Jr. takes the VK and sets off on his own>This forces Julius to go after him>Julius meets with the different Belmont spirits along the way, these could be the in-game powerups>Finally finds Johnathan Jr. but the VK has come close to killing him, revealing Sara's spirit>With Sara's soul at ease once more and VK in hand, Julius sets off to kill Dracula once and for allAlternative game modes where Julius starts with the VK draining his health and Johnathan Jr. isn't in the story, and another for some sort of timer before the year is up and Dracula unleashes some all or nothing attack on the world.Man, now I'm just sad this is never going to be a thing.
>>722732543sounds great. Maybe gaming will get to the point where we can dragon and drop stuff into a Castlevania Maker for something like this. Like a more focused Game Maker Engine or Godot.
>>722730295such an underrated gem, the devs even took some inspirations from Castlevania adventure also the OST is fire
>>722730295>chronicles of the wolf?>based on a true storyxD!
>>722733383No-It was based on a folk tale called La Bête du Gévaudan, about a wolf that killed 113 people.
Can't believe Castlevania is dead. Only new thing was that Netflix show.
>>722738220>Only new thing was that Netflix show.it was soulless and woke (a redundancy I know)
>>722730295Its really good. The only thing it lacks over Lecarde Chronicles 2 is that it is far less creepy. There are one or two unnerving events but they just didn't hit has hard as some of the LC2 ones as far as being unsettling. As far as being a better game in every other way though, yeah it is a huge improvement.
>>722741683It is even more annoying because the first handful of episodes were ok bordering on good and then the downhill slide was extreme. At least the DMC show had the decency to be complete shit from start to finish.
>>722727379if he was literally a Belmont descendant his name would be John Belmont
>>7227110723 , aria and the DS games64 games being a guilty pleasure
>>722711072Beat the Igavanias last month, should probably do the classicvanias near Halloween. Is release order a good way to start?
>>722745907Yeah, release order is your best bet. CV isn't too hard once you get the hang of it, 2 isn't nearly as bad as most people say but feel free to use a guide if you get stuck (you will). Both versions of 3 have their ups and downs, it doesn't really matter what one you play.
>most Kino fight in any castlevania
>>722730295I loved it except for the janky input lag that made some of the platforming sections insufferable, that and some questionable design choices aside its a top 5 castlevania game for me. I've since learned that doing something with steam input may help with the input lag, check the patch notes. I played it on xbox because it released 2 days early there and as far as I know there's been no patch for that specifically on console but I haven't played it since I beat it.
>>722726539Shame the game is considered non Canon now
>>722717207This is easily my favorite metroidvania game. Feels great playing a mtroidvania game with a classicvania moveset, I will never understand the obsession with metroidvanias copying how Alucard moves in SotN, it kind of worked for that character but I never liked how his movement felt.
>>722723432failure of a Belmont>Richter kills Shaft>Shaft comes back as a ghost>Richter kills Shaft's ghost>Shaft comes back in the next game without any explanation and mind controls Richterit's not Richter's fault when his enemy has unlimited lives and unlimited asspulls
>>722717347I love it even more now...
>>722730295Just a great game overall, stop procrastinating and go play it already.
>>722745289>a guilty pleasureYou shouldn't feel any guilt. CV64 is a great game and has a stronger atmosphere than most titles in the series.
>>722726563>>722728815Its gonna be a reimagening of Legends because the original sucked just like Haunted Castle.
>>722722336Supposedly the touch screen works on the Steam Deck (and by extension other PC handhelds I assume) as well, so there's that.
>>722746525Didn't they walk that back?
>>722717207It would be better if the drop rate was fixed and/or you could pick up the cards as you go along, but agreed. Awake and Proof of Blood are all-timer tuneshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyk4Qso7rpMhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLMU143vNUc
Wgat are the odds they release Rondo + SotN on PC this year for Halloween?
>>722748889- a trillion billion million %
>>722748889Hopefully it's a Dracula X collection for all platforms.
>>722747947That would be fine too.Seem Konami is open to the idea of Sonia being canon again.
>>722749926I both love and hate that this is the best CV game at the moment.
>>722711072It's hard to choose. I honestly don't think there's any Castlevania games I dislike. I never played the Lords of Shadow games actually. I really like the Game Boy games which most people seem to hate. Rondo of Blood and Circle of the Moon are probably my favorites overall.
>>722719807Didn't that mobile game revealed that there were records of her? Also, I know that the game said that she let the knowledge of the glyphs die with her but PoR and OoE implies an unintended chain of inspiration. The glyphs were a primitive execution of the theory behind Brauner's paintings. Brauner's plan was inspiration behind the plan to seal Dracula's castle in the solar eclipse. The Elgos was created based on the research of the seals.
>>722729085>Death Mercury>is mentioned only once in the Castlevania Bloodlines EGM faxi hate this bullshit, like how much effort would it have taken Konami to put this info in at least ONE Castlevania game, and this document became publicly available thanks to a dedicated fan instead of officially from Konami which stopped giving a damn about Castlevania long ago.
>>722747798true. it has an appeal none of the other 3D castlevanias have
>>722750686OoE literally said Shanoa and her glyphs were forgotten by history. She isn't even credited with training up the next generation of Belmonts. And considering it's the last game in the series, I'd take it as canon over whatever other slop Konami has put out.
>>722750175>Castlevania games I dislike. I never played the Lords of Shadow gamesMakes sense.
>>722748889Its gonna be years before they do another collection.
What happened to Harmony of Despair again?
>>722751674I would love to see this on Steam, but I know that the halcyon days of the first month the game was on Xbox Live will never return and everyone will just be a tryhard from minute one.
>>722752003Soma will need a hard nerf so we don't have lobbies full of Soma players chasing the meta. Also make leveling character subweapons not so damn grindy.
>>722751674did Harmony of Despair have any of the 3D protags?
>>722751476Maybe I'll play them this month.
>>722752486Only 2D characters pulled from the DS games, Alucard from Symphony and Simon from the original 8 bit classic.Oh and Ricther and Maria from Rondo.
>>722752738shame. i would have liked a bigger cast
>>722729085>>722729534>>722731008iirc the mobile game's explanation IS that the stuff in Symphony of the Night corrupted them (not sure if the Belmonts or the Whip Wife) so the Belmonts had to stay away from the Vampire Killer until 1999.
>>722711532what's next? play the jp version? you coward
>>722711072You know what, I'm going to say it: I liked the Lords of Shadow games. The second one had a lot wrong with it (whoever made the big red space marines unkillable should be flogged, for example) but the design work on the Castle and its inhabitants was fantastic.
>>722754194>playing the superior version Nothing wrong with that.
>>722750175>I really like the Game Boy games which most people seem to hate. Most people agree Belmont's Revenge is a fantastic game unless they're poser faggots who haven't played it yet choose to comment on it anyway.
>>722754204I could never get into LoS2, only castlevania I ever dropped out of frustration.
>>722747798>>722751319Game isn't even that bad, it's another victim of mid 2000s hyberbolic "reviewers" who gave them a lot of shit for comedic purposes and it caught on among people who never played them.
I hope we get more little remakes like this.Simon's Quest Revisted would go hard af.
>>722754204I still hold the same opinion I always had. Without the CV name there wouldn't be much to discuss, and considering MercurySteam's original games that seems to be a recurring issue for them, and with the CV name I just end up missing the things I like about the series that aren't present in it. Aside from that, it wants to be GoW more than it wants to be CV.I don't necessarily blame MercurySteam though. On a technical level at least they're competent. Part of it is Kojima who was made producer and is incapable of giving a shit about anything that doesn't have his name at the top I still have a conspiracy theory that Kojima actively undermined all other projects including getting MercurySteam's pitch approved rather than the Alucard game by IGA just to divert money and staff into his own projects and part of it was probably Konami actively wanting the game to be a reboot so all those cool elements about the series were thrown away on purpose.
>>722754903>Game isn't even that badIt's not that good ether, game was rushed out for a Christmas release. The developers were legit trying their hardest to have an "Ocarina of Time" moment for the series it just never panned out.
>>722754903True. I tried it for the first time after having heard it was this all time worst on the console but it's fine. I wasn't really impressed by it and that nitroglycerin part is annoying but it's perfectly enjoyable. I'd still put it close to the bottom of the franchise but that just speaks to how good the franchise is overall.
>>722746525>Shame the game is considered non Canon nowBruh, IGA don't work there anymore. Anything is canon at this point.

>>722757561I need Konami to get off their asses and do a Rebirth Collection. I've always wanted M2 to make a Metal Gear Rebirth game starring Grey Fox.
>Invitation of a Crazed Moon
>>722758675song slaps I'm still not sure the extent to which Yuzo Koshiro and Michiru Yamane collaborated on this OST. I can only guess they did some songs together (like Invitation of a Crazed Moon) and some independently (Destroyer sounds too much like ActRaiser's boss theme for me to think anybody but Koshiro worked on it).
>>722757561They make ports. It's true that they're some of the best at it, but porting other games isn't exactly a high-profile job, lots of no-name companies get contracted to do that. You're almost acting as if M2 actually worked on all those games for real.
>>722711072Curse of Darkness. I love it for what it is. And dream of what a Lords of Shadow budget could have created if they went that way. Alas, one can only dream.

>>722726236Compared to most other castlevanias it has an actual story, and if you haven't played the game before, even a bit of mystery and tragic intrigue, which pulls you in and makes you care.On top of that, to me the most important thing is that that the gameplay and story are congruent and feel like a cohesive experience. You don't have the vampire killer, you're not a Belmont, you're not Dracula's reincarnation or his son, you're just some wizard girl with a back tattoo. You're up against a powerful enemy force while not being the chosen one just dashing through their fated encounter with Dracula like all your ancestors before you. The game being significantly harder than the other metroid-style castlevanias works in its favor and it really feels like you start with no power at the beginning.>>722724194It's kino. Walking into Dracula's castle, Shanoa is making a real self-sacrifice since she has no idea if she can beat him. She does it since there's just no one else left to try. Dominus being a weapon to kill dracula is a sham since the guy who made it actually wanted to revive him. The odds are so bad that Shanoa has to hype herself up by doing a cool little speech before walking in. It's like if Charlotte tried to solo Portrait of Ruin because Jonathan died. Other castlevanias just don't have moments like this.
>>722726236Story is intrinsic linked to its progression and they made Albus one hell of a tragic antagonist too.
>>722759130>You're almost acting as if M2 actually worked on all those games for real. They're more than just porters, they made original games too like Haunted Castle RebirthThey made The Adventure Reebirth, GG Aleste 3, & Fantasy Zone II System-16 versionhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9c5mxxsfybQ
OoE is the last game in the timeline?
>>722760764no. that's dawn i believe
What is Iga doing nowadays?
>>722760764Castlevania Harmony of Despair, unless you don't count spin-offs then Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
>>722729085>>722729534I wonder if there's anyone out there who's been waiting for a 1999 game since 1997.>>722751163Weird part is you can see some elements trickling into released games. Like how Reinhardt's Schneider's dad was probably named after Michael Belmont and Gerhart Belmont (Michael was an old man looking after the Alucard Spear, and Gerhart "strangely died" or died an "unnatural death" according to two family trees)
>>722760976He finished up Bloodstained's last bit of DLC for the original backers this year I believe and they announced a sequel soon after, Bloodstained: The Scarlet EngagementThat series has like 4 games now
>>722760764technically its grimoire of souls but idk if that game is canon
So... did Jonathan insert his peepee inside Charlotte coochie at the end?
>>722761398Of course
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKQFcLC90-A&list=RDeKQFcLC90-A&start_radio=1Look anon, I respect your opinionbut Dawn of Sorrow is the best Vania game on the DS if not of all time
>>722760976making portrait 2: twink edition
>>722761398I'm more interested in Dracula being a father in law.
>>722711072I didn't play it yet but it's on my backlog :).
>>722761398no way fag
>>722752629They're terrible.
post underrated trackshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT6PC3z-BLA
>>722761564It's alright. The focus on crafting weapons means most of the castle feels empty of things to find and even the crafting system could've been better tuned. I would've done away with needing specific souls outside of maybe boss weapons and instead give the souls a value. That way it'd get rid of some grinding and you could still have some use for random souls.
>>722761070It's probably for the best to keep 1999 without a game or official story nowadays. I'd be hard to beat the headcanons people have created and we'd probably just get a rather by the numbers game with a predictable story. Like what could they do to make this Dracula fight really stand out as the end all fight compared to him doing the same predictable attacks we've been seeing throughout the entire franchise?
>>722749926>Play as Leon's wife>Pick the alchemy whip>Die>It becomes the vampire killerIts the little things that made this DLC great.
I loved the conversations in the gacha game, richter discovering what his actions caused for the belmonts, Jonathan trying to do a tug of war with Simon and losing horribly because Simon is gorilla strong.
>>722759805>That was the first and last time the game was discussed and since then it seems it was quietly cancelled in favor of MercurySteam's Lord of Shadow project.Worst timeline.
which mobile game are you referring to? I think there were like 2 and both got cancelled.
>>722763241Grimore of Souls.Where the hell is the console port? This is one I would actually play.
>>722763410Just for the conversations I'd probably end up playing this.
Will it be good?
>>722745113Are you retarded?
>>722763705I didnt like the first one because it looked too ugly. This one also looks ugly so I probably wont play it.
>>722727379Castlevania's never had a story worth giving the slightest fuck about.
>>722726563>3D CollectionWho the fuck wants that?
>>722754903>mid 2000slolno. The game had a bad reputation years before that.
He's just like me...
>>722763705Outside of the cutscenes they showed it looks as bad as the first one. Art direction wise I mean, the clashing assets and that odd shader or whatever you'd call it that makes everything look cheap and out of place. Gameplay wise it'll probably be as fun as the first one. I just hope this one will actually depart from being a greatest hits version of CV and turn into its own thing. Although the obvious Portrait of Ruin comparisons are inevitable so I'm not too hopeful.
>>722726236Plot. Shanoa forgets her whole life then loses it killing it with her own hands before trying to fight Dracula with the realization that everything she did before the accident was to be a sexy sacrifice to the dark lord. You can't have that when the game starts with the holiest mightiest warrior entering the castle in ,minute 1 and everything happens inside.
>>722764326Me.
>>722711072OoE is the only Castlevania I've finished so it's my favorite and also the best one.
>>722764326The PS2 games were fun and I didn't hate Legacy of Darkness. Didn't hate Lords of Shadow either, but that would probably get its own separate remaster.
>>722764326They're fun games, just more obviously flawed in their own ways. The 2D games are essentially solved in their design by comparison.
>>722765041I'm sorry you want bad things.
>>722765219>They're fun gamesIn that special mindless not-at-all kind of way. They're C- efforts at best.
>>722721692i dont think any of these games are bad retard
>American manual is Boo! Haunted House type Halloween hijinks where groovy ghouls do the Monster Mash >Japanese manual is about how Dracula is the demonic antiChrist who resurrects from a black mass on the eve of Easter Sunday because the people have strayed from the path of Jesus Christ and the second form you fight is actually the personification of man's cursed and sinful nature
>>722765548CV64 is alright but I found it a bit uneventful. I heard Legacy of Darkness improves a lot although I haven't gone around to trying it. Lament of Innocence is enjoyable but on the repetitive side. Curse of Darkness is fun, biggest complaint I have is the level design could be improved, specially to take more advantage of the innocent devils as ways to traverse the environment, but the combat itself is a step up with a lot of different weapons to use. So like I said, flawed but they're still fun.
>>722765884>Halloween hijinks where groovy ghouls do the Monster MashI mean it is still that. Akamatsu was just pulling from movies.
>>722726563no way they would remaster a 3D game ,right?>>722764326>Who the fuck wants that?i do
>>722763075Look at this way, LoS might have been soulless AAA slop with the CV name, but at least the first one pulled numbers. The Alucard game probably would've flopped and then the series could be extra-dead.
>>722764326ME, because it's CastleKINO!!!!!!!!
>>722766005I feel for the CV64 team. It was helmed by a B-team at Konami that had little to no experience with making 3-D games. The ones that did know how to program and design things in 2D were working overtime trying to get the game playable and the rest were literally learning 3D systems as they went along.
>>722766301BASED
>>722765884America was still under the satanic panic from the D&D controversies.Releasing an NES game called "Devil's Castle Dracula" probably wasn't a good idea. So some lore had to be changed.
>>722766552So do I but it's still a somewhat shit game.
>>722764493>I just hope this one will actually depart from being a greatest hits version of CV and turn into its own thing. The other guy who is responsible for portrait of ruin and ooe is basically the lead designer and I get the impression hes really running wild with this game so I expect it to be a lot different.
>>722721072>since it fixes magic sealsbut there was nothing to fix
I wish I saw in the 64 games what others seem to, I do think they're cool. The Villa is hot garbage though and I balk at the notion of there being more half-assed adventure game-y shit in it.
>>722766262I disagree. I think part of what made LoS a hit was just marketing plus the franchise being on a home console again. The Alucard game, given the same marketing and same home console release, would've made just as much money. The only potential caveat is that this was during the era when critics and reviewers really hated anything japanese so they've might've hated it on principle rather than LoS being given the DmC treatment of "it's good because it's no longer japanese" reasoning.
>>722764326Me. I want an improved Curse of Darkness.
>>7227668352006-2014 just seemed to be a weird era for media.Nothing could be whimsical everything had to be dark or coated in several layers of irony.
>>722766835>I think part of what made LoS a hit was just marketing plus the franchise being on a home console again. They also pimped out the hell out of kojima's name and alleged involvement leading up to the release.
>>722766843Curse of Darkness ReShadowed: Extra Corridors Edition, now with even gayer character models.
>>722766552I feel like a lot of Konami's games have some similar history. Nobodies with no experience who are just told they have a a few months/a year to make a game and somehow it tends to work out.
>>722766835It was just the right game at the right time, and LoS1 is genuinely competent even if it overextends itself. The PS2 games were many things, but they were not competent. Maybe the Alucard game would've been better, who knows. I kind of doubt it, though. I also doubt it would have been as successful.
Imagine C64 with an improved camera in a 3D collection. I want to believe.
>>722766835I agree that LoS sold on name and publicity, and if there's any point to its existence in current year, it's proving there was intrinsic strength to the CV brand at least as far back as that. But IGA games generally just didn't sell so great, probably just enough to be worth doing a sequel, over and over. Plus, without it being rebranded, and continuing to be more of Igarashi's games with Ayami Kojima's art, it probably would've built up far less intrigue. >>722767041To this day the only thing I've concretely heard he did on that game was tell them to give Gabriel facial hair.
>>722766979>Dracula was a guy named Matthias who became Dracula because he stole the powers of Ginger Dracula and that made him Dracula>Meg Ryan is angryThe sharpest of minds, that Koji Igarashi.
I read somewhere here that Curse of Darkness had a big fan patch or mode that improved and fixed a lot of things but I dont know where to find it.
>>722767219LoD coming out in late '99 and not so much as having a "center camera" button is egregious desu
>>722767016I think it was genuine hatred towards the japanese, one that didn't go unnoticed by the japanese. A while back one of the guys at SquareEnix was even talking about that. PS3/360 era was when the west finally had a foothold to match the japanese who were falling behind the new tech and by god the western devs/media were out for blood. A strange time looking back.
>>722748220Dracula is such a peak boss in this. He goes super fucking hard on a dude who isn't even a Belmont.
>>722766301Is this the most kino cutscene in all Castlevannia? I think it just might be.
>>722766053I wish we got games about other monsters now and then. Would be fun to see what the Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll, etc.. are up to in the CV universe.
>>722767191>genuinely competentIts horrible the least janky 3D vania had to be the one that was a hodge podge of sony cinematic games combined with the worst parts of god of war.>>722767229I bet a 2D iga game today would sell well if it had a proper vania art style, too bad thats never gonna happen.
>>722767229Castlevania suffered in the same way the likes of Mega Man suffered. Went 3D, didn't rock the world, company got scared, retracted to handhelds, tried a reboot although MM's reboot was cancelled before even coming out, series dies with a whimper. Say what you will about Sonic but the smartest thing Sega did was not get scared of the home console market after the likes of 06.
>>722767750Lords of Shadow was successful, though. LoS2 infamously was a failure, but by that point Konami was pulling out of games anyway. I don't think LoS2 being successful would have changed anything.
>>722766979such a sick design. I wish Kojima did more vampire designs than just Alucard and Dracula over and over
>>722767402lol its like they were hermetically sealed off from the world when they made it totally unaware of 3D games that were out at that time.
>>722767905Yeah I bought LoS2 for ten bucks recently and I still wouldn't recommend it. It's licensed game shovelware tier.
do you think they'll ever try 3D castlevania again?
>>722767928It's not a bad design on its own terms but it's very much Ayami Kojima's usual bishonen shtick. If the hair were silver or black it would pass as a Dracula design. The earrings make him look a little more like a drag queen than her characters usually do, but that's still just how our old fujo rolls.
>>722763705This dude has the most insane eyebrows I've seen
>>722768276Part of me thinks that's what they'll do next. They'll bring back the series and really try to make an impact. Making a 2D game might as well be left to IGA with Bloodstained.
>>722767905Yeah but again, I don't think it was because people actually liked the game as some new direction to the series. As far as I know DmC was successful as well but Capcom still decided to not follow up on it. Konami certainly tried but LoS2 being bad basically confirmed this reboot was dead.
adventure rebirth is kicking my assWHERE THE FUCK IS THE WALLMEAT
>>722768539The real question is what will it play like? Will it be more like Lament, more like Curse it'll be Dark Souls, there's no question about it
>>722768539I'm sure they have a blood vendetta against him for leaving but iga said he'd love to come back and make another game.
>>722768821In the walls, lol.
>>722768979I expect that will happen sooner or later. Iga seems to genuinely love Castlevania so either Konami just rehires him or Konami buys his company so that Iga is left alone. Everyone wins.
>>722768757>I don't think it was because people actually liked the game as some new direction to the seriesIt was never intended to be a permanent thing anyway since it was tied directly to Mercurysteam's involvement. It was always going to wrap up with LoS2.I don't think people were that attached to LoS's direction, no, but it was also abundantly clear that people weren't that attached to what was going on under Igarashi either. In other words, I don't think LoS denied us some big Castlevania renaissance stewarded by IGA. I'm not the biggest fan of 2000s Castlevania anyway so I'm a little biased, but even Igarashi admitted diminishing returns to what was already operating on a small scale.
>>722769176If they do I hope its not some gacha shit.
>>722768821I ate ur moms wallmeat
>>722768276that requires a new team and starting from scratch might be tough.honestly. might be better to start with a remake to teach a new team. kinda like metroid prime remastered
>>722769219>It was never intended to be a permanent thing anyway since it was tied directly to Mercurysteam's involvement. It was always going to wrap up with LoS2.>doubt.jpgIf it was better received it would be. But there was little substance to really carry it as a franchise. It was a bunch of cobbled ideas taken from more popular games.>but it was also abundantly clear that people weren't that attached to what was going on under Igarashi either.Sales wises at the time no but people still talk fondly of them and the bundles on steam seem to be doing well so it wasn't the games' faults, more a marketing issue than anything.
>>722726563Chronicles, but I think instead of a 3D collection they should split them up and pair them with the rest of the 2D games.
>>722726563A finished version of the cancelled Dreamcast game.
>>722711532Then you'll see the ending, but you wont beat it
https://youtu.be/BchxkhsVvnU?si=TSSAa2Zuc5m08ME1&t=156
>>722769782>doubt.jpgYou can doubt what you want, but they said it over and over again around Mirror of Fate's release and LoS2's. It's possible that if LoS2 had been a runaway success that they would have extended it in some way or at least incorporated it into Castlevania going forward, but the reality is Konami was not interested in going forward anyway period. Their trajectory was set regardless. >But there was little substance to really carry it as a franchise. It was a bunch of cobbled ideas taken from more popular games. You aren't wrong but when the competition is the PS2 funkillers (that were themselves derivative, especially Lament) it looked brilliant.
>>722769642Lament would be a good choice>canonical start of the franchise so new players aren't bogged down by 30 years of lore>original game had good ideas but poor execution so room for improvement>get rid of the copy pasted hallways and replace with proper level designI'd buy it.
>>722770361>original game had good ideasFucking where?
>>722770325To meet you halfway, that was around the time the whole Konami/Kojima thing was starting to implode behind the scenes leading them to practically leave the industry for a while so yeah, nothing sort of LoS2 being some sort of Dark Souls tier hit was going to save it. Plus, despite the first game selling over a million I'm sure Konami was betting on far more.
>>722769642i'd buy a good castlevania 64 remake for current platforms
>>722770602>that was around the time the whole Konami/Kojima thing was starting to implode behind the scenes leading them to practically leave the industry for a whileIt was more fundamental than that; Kojima was just a symptom. People forget how big of a company Konami actually is.
>>722770534Plenty. Those orbs that change how the secondary weapons work, the different buffs you can use, I really liked how they did the inventory system which was both intuitive to use and didn't take you out of the fight so you couldn't just pause the game to heal.
>>722770819Are there any other factors I'm forgetting? IIRC Kojima was one of the big reasons they "left" the industry to focus on the gambling side instead. The reason why Iga left was because he was told to work on mobile games and he just said fuck that, give me Castlevania or give me death.
>>722770852cute shanoa
>>722749926The Lament of Innocence theme in this is so damn good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXDMfpN9byM
>>722770946>Are there any other factors I'm forgetting? The fact Konami had their eyes on other pies. That's really it. Development costs were rising and they saw more lucrative opportunities elsewhere, or thought they did. Hence Kojima leaving and things like Silent Hills getting canceled.
Crazy how a such an old franchise has struggled with 3d games
>>722724567Judgement was meant to be a send off to the Japanese series before they switched to Lords of Shadow. They even got the artist of Death Note to show they were pouring money into it.As bad as some designs are, I do like others
Is this game vaporware? Says its coming out this year but as far as I can tell there's been no news about it for over a year now.

I just didnt like OoEs maps. A bunch of different ones but all very small and linear. I remember one of the locations being like a house or a small church and that was it. You just used it to cross to the other map. There was almost nothing in it.

>>722778247Game didn't know when to end, I was exhausted by the time I got out of castle and realized there was more shit to do.
>>722777851From what I can parse from the auto generated translation, the japanese didn't want to abandon the old ways. Yeah, that probably was a big element for them starting to fall behind although I feel like that applies more to the technical side of things. In terms of gameplay design the west's approach is to sacrifice gameplay in favor of graphics.

>>722789408The Castlevania Church is more open-minded than it seems since they rescued the innocent witches that were being attacked in the hunts manipulated by Carmilla and those witches started a partnering sect of followers of God that use witchcraft to kill monsters.I don't think they'd mind much whatever uniform they wore.

>>722711072I played castlevania for the first time, order of ecclesia, and found it to be just alright. I'm sure at the time it was great but because I am playing it in a modern lens I can't help but feel the combat is kind of archaic. Mostly all enemies having a hitbox in their hurtbox is annoying, dashing has to be done by backdashing, sliding or jumping on opponents not being more utilized, bosses feeling claustrophobic and relatively samey (since you cannot jump over the big ones or their big attacks/your limited movement limiting you to a small space, as well as it being hard to react to some attacks until you learn them), the constant need to change your glyphs, etc. The grind, level design, and anything else like that is what it is.I know the stamina system is this game's exclusive thing but I find it added nothing to the gameplay. Weapon attacks already had some recovery that essentially did the same thing, except now you had to wait an extra long time if you attacked too much.On a positive note, once I got redire, spidermaning through the levels was so fun that it should have been a core mechanic.

not enjoying cotm much bros, the music is meh, the art is weak, everything is samey and repetitive, mobs are so easy as to be completely trivial yet quite annoying when you have to backtrack, there are no interesting design ideas

>>722768276>do you think they'll ever try 3D castlevania again?I'd be happy if they just make a new proper castlevania again. 2D. 3D. Metroidvania. Classicvania. I don't care.

>>722770946Reminder that Akamatsu, basically the creator of Castlevania, left the company after being demoted for CV3 not selling as well as the company wanted, and the guy who founded Treasure was an ex-Konami employee who directed Super Castlevania 4 and was basically treated the same way when that game didn't sell well either. Konami has always been bleeding its talent since the beginning. It's ironic that they are trying to come back, but now everything they make is outsourced because no one at Konami has any ideas themselves.
any vania anons here played ENDER LILIES, what you think?
>>722806976Dropped it after 6 hours. Couldn't really get into it due to average gameplay and mediocre map design/exploration. Heard Magnolia was better but I got other Metroidvanias on my backlog like Hollow Knight. Might drop that one too I'm 2.5 hours in and bored out of my mind.
>>722763705Gameplay sounds kino, but I was really hoping for sprites or 2D artwork like Vanillaware or hell, even Ghost N' Goblins Resurrection would've been fine.
>>722770534Perfect guard. The orb system. Map markers. Having to use relics to access different areas. Poorly executed but kinda clever puzzles to access secret areas. That and the fact that the combo system was literally copy pasted to God of War that came out like 2 years later.
>>722806930It's still funny to me how the Treasure guys were so fed up with Konami's obsession with sequels that they vowed not to make sequels. And they genuinely didn't make a single sequel for like the first 10 years.
>>722807095I beat death's gambit well I had 4 enemies left on heroic but I turned my game off during a save =) and lost all my saves =) and that was the next vaniaish game I was gonna get.if you put 6 hours maybe I can get something from it, would you say its better then that blood....I forget its full name

waifuism aside, i do genuinely believe Shanoa at least from a visual standpoint is the greatest female character design in vidyaher comparisons to miriam only highlight this more starkly, where miriam has random belts, earrings, and other stuff, Shanoas design is a masterpiece of simplicity, not overtly sexualised but appealing, her hair outline silhouettes her perfectly and her colour pallete/outfit are very simple so even a sprite of her on a small screen is clear

>>722816841It's really joyful to speed up and slow down tracks and observe how the music feels different as a result. It's also fun to play with the pitch, which YouTube doesn't allow.I'd recommend downloading the music you like from Soulseek and using the best music player AIMP, with built-in resampler (changes pitch and tempo at the same time), to play with the pitch and tempo as you please. There's no magic trick to learn the piano, just buy one and have the willpower to watch tutorial videos and follow along or buy books about it. Most people just memorize songs and scales — if you are brave you could try writing your own music.

>>722844820I liked it, but it was much easier and barely related to anything until Portrait of Ruin brought Eric back as a relevant character. It wasn't as easy as SCV4, but the invincible jump and the screen-clearing superweapons could easily trivialize a lot of fights. Watching boss sprites get morphed when you hit them was a nice touch.
