just look up a guide, though spoiler alert the game is shit and not worth it. I put fucking 50 hours into it before I finally dropped it. the no fighting intro was really cool and tricked me into thinking it was going to be a good game with a cool story, nope its just a 100 hour macguffin hunt!

It really is a shame about dq7 because it nails just about everything else besides the whole shard fiasco. It honest to god did need that remake which restructures a lot of it, but then in that case it loses a lot of the visual whimsy of the original, so its just doomed to forever be an imperfect game.

Play the 3ds version, it has a "shard decector" which goes off if there is a shard in the level you are in.

Talk to the fortune teller in the present, she's in place where the robot hideout was. Her fortune tells you exactly what town you missed something in.
There's zero reason to get stuck in this game.

Before playing it I would always rush through towns and then constantly have to look up guides on where to go next.
