Looking at the solution to this just blows my mind.

It all seems to make some kind of sense like "Okay, yeah we can swap those exponents because it's effectively shorthand and multiplication is commutitive" but then we're suddenly adding 25 and subtracting 26 and a is somehow equal to 5 through a process I didn't catch even a little bit.

It's been so long since I've done any even slightly advanced math that I guess I forgot how much of it was just puzzle solving and how deep those puzzles went. I didn't get it at all.

I'm a programmer. I've learnt a pile of "maths" but I don't even know how to read most equations. I feel like programming spawns this alternate reality where both dsciplines are exercising the same processes, but calling it vastly different things and writing it in vastly different ways.

Taking limits to infinity seems like such a cop out. I hate it. Every time I see something involving taking a limit to infinity I just walk away. Nothing useful has ever been done by taking limits to infinity.

Whoever taught you maffs was just a nerd. The whole point (imo) of taking things to infinity is that IRL is never actually discrete, but rather continuous, and measuring things with an infinitesimally-small unit (of time, etc.) is the best way to represent reality more accurately when using maffs.

There are only 2 complex solutions. The number of solutions a polynomial equation has is always equal to the highest exponent in the equation. In this case, y^3 + y - 130 = 0 has 3 as its largest exponent, and the real number solution is 5, so there are 2 complex roots. You fail, see me after class.

Taking limits to infinity is super sensible. Take the graph sinc (which sin(x)/x), it’s a perfectly smooth and continuous curve EXCEPT at the origin because it looks like 0/0. Taking limits just says
>since the graph is obviously fucking approaching 1 and if you drew this on a piece of paper it would be indistinguishable from 1, let the value of this function at this point be 1 so we can actually use it to model real world functions where this kind of pattern happens, because in the real world everything doesn’t abruptly become undefined for a single split instant

My "aversion" to it comes from the fact that I graduated, went out into the real world and never, ever used anything more advanced than basic algebra and high-school level calculations.

Anytime I see even slightly advanced notation now, it's recalling lessons from decades ago that I've never needed or practiced since. Very few jobs use even a fraction of this stuff.
>>
>>722827192
I got exceptional grades in math in HS and college but I never felt like I actually understood most of it until Grant Sanderson. Before that it was just applied arcana with symbols, you learned rules and used the rules and it let you manipulate statements but it was more like playing Baba Is You than developing a meaningful understanding of anything.
>>
>>722827270
It depends on what you do. I do game programming as a hobby so I have to apply linear algebra (for position and angle), calculus (for movement computation), and even some quaternion (for object rotation, though that’s largely auto-computed) regularly. If you had asked me in high school “what’s your opinion on the dot product” I’d have looked at you like you were drunk but now I find it as handy an operation as addition or subtraction for comparing the relative alignment of normal vectors.
>>
>>722827280
>Before that it was just applied arcana with symbols, you learned rules and used the rules and it let you manipulate statements but it was more like playing Baba Is You than developing a meaningful understanding of anything
Realest shit I think I've ever read around these parts. Perfectly described my experience as well, I never really performed that badly, but when I did it was because I didn't cram and memorize retardation. My biggest problem now is I forgot it all after over a decade, but I'm sure I can brush up on it if I needed to.
>>
>>722827270
It's the same with English. I couldn't tell you a thing about the perfect, pluperfect or whatever else tenses these days, because it turns out you never need to know any of that stuff.

All you need to know is how to read and write, and the rest is interpreting text and meaning. Statistics is one of the only classes that's legitimately helpful to most people most of the time.
>>
>>722827405
It definitely does depend on what you do, programmers will use some math (matrices especially) and so will various sciences. But you're still not using imaginary numbers or calculating the Simpson's rule.

It's like in University where half my goddamn programing credits were just learning whatever functionality useless language the professor enjoyed. I have never, ever heard of someone using Ruby on Rails or Haskell in a way that mattered, but they made up a big chunk of my degree.
>>
>>722827467
Most retards these days need to be sent to a statistics concentration camp where they stop saying stupid shit like "the science says" or "studies say" or "X causes Y based on Z study". The part of statistics that I enjoyed the most was just the strict use of wording to describe data, really itched my autism right.
>>
>>722827270
I've used calculus a handful of times since graduating high school, but that's about it. I originally went to college to be a physicist but dropped out of my degree. I've never needed linalg or really anything more advanced than introductory differential equations that's sometimes covered in a calculus course, and only for my hobbies.

>>722827654
This. A lot of people could stand to have more statistical knowledge. But then again, statisticians could stand not to be lying Jews.
>>
>>722827637
>But you're still not using imaginary numbers
electrical engineers use imaginary numbers all the time though, just because they're a very handy way for modeling oscillations. Audio engineering does as well, at least if you take for granted that imaginary numbers exist "under the hood" of the fourier transform, which is used about eleven million times per project in any audio engineering context that exists.
>>
Interesting discussion but consider Yuuka's thighs
>>
>>722827943
Calling them "imaginary" is a bit of a misnomer. They could have easily been called compound numbers or something to not give the impression that the complex plane has nothing of substance to it.
The only thing that comes close to its namesake is the leap from having i come into existence by arbitrarily letting negative roots have solutions.

>>
>>722829105
Anon, the distance between points approaches zero but never actually reaches zero. And you're adding an infinite amount of positive, but very small, values.
Anyone thats taken calculus could tell you that you cant just evaluate that the same way you'd evaluate a normal fraction.
Infinite sums either converse or diverge, and when you have strictly positive components you can easily tell that taking partial sums of circumference approximations never trends negative. The only naive conclusions you could make would be that the circumference approaches some value or it approaches infinity, zero is a batshit stupid conclusion that just proves you haven't gotten past algebra.
>>
>>722829668
x = 0.999...
10x = 9.999...
10x - x = 9
9x = 9
x = 1= 0.999...
>>
>>722829668
There are a lot of different proofs for why 1 = .9 repeating.
One that i like that requires no calculations is a definition. In order for 2 numbers to be different, it must be possible for there to be a number between them. It is not possible to insert a number between them, since its impossible to have a number that has an infinite number of digits before a singular different digit at a discrete location, as the infinitely repeating decimal will just keep going.
>>
>>722829668
Oh, I see what you mean, you take the total distance between all neighboring points as an approximation of the circumference.
The thing to realize is that "a limiting value" is supposed to be derived from finitely many values first.
In your circle case, as long as you have finitely many points on the circle, the total distance is pretty close to the circumference.
As you add more points, the distance between any two neighbors will decrease, on average, but you'll have more of these distances to add together for the total.
These changes offset each other, and the total shouldn't change very much.
>>
>>722829105
The problem with this analogy is that you're applying the logic halfway. If you thought through what you were saying, you'd realize the conclusion is that the distance between any point and a point infinitely close to it is zero. Which, yeah, obviously that's true. I mean this is literally the basics of integration, you're talking about taking progressively finer and finer slices of something, of course there's an inverse relationship between the size of each slice and the number of slices.
>>
>>722816232
Genuinely where do you use this knowledge in real life?
>>
>>722830658
It comes up a lot more if your job uses math that's more complex than algebra.
In fact the OP image IS algebra.
Calculus doesn't come up often unless you have an engineering job but stuff like modeling growth trends does come up in the financial sector as well as the sciences.
Just because (you) don't use the math doesn't mean that someone above you doesn't use it. If you've got a job you are getting paid by someone that is leaning on the banking infrastructure in some capacity.

That math has been done though.

In GFL2 I need 80k CP to be in the 95th percentile to V6 a Doll on release.

I didn't need to do that math, I just did napkin math of "V6 is 7 copies, assume I lose 4 of the 50-50s, that's about 130k CP I need to save." But then I saw the chart, saw it was far smaller than that (turns out you'll hit 1% chances every now and then) and so have kept that knowledge since. Rates don't change, so there's no need to do anything except remember the answer. You'd be better off trying to argue about team comps or ideal loadouts, but again, somebody else already did that math.

The absolute worst is in games like XIV's Island Sanctuary where somebody did the math, but the math involves either data mining or some kind of prediction pattern, and they kept that stuff 100% black boxed to force you to use their fucking Discord server to be told what the right answers were each week.

I had a friend who was really into math and was enjoying trying to puzzle out full optimisation for the IS, and each week he couldn't get numbers as good as the Discord people. But every attempt to find out how they got their numbers was 100% blackboxed either "Just follow this guide" or "Here's the basic principles that everyone knows." Was really disheartening for him, he wanted to figure this out and have fun with the numbers, but it was like a piece of the formula was being withheld.

This is like saying 0.5 doesn't exist because you can't order 0.5 apples from the store. It's not that the quantity 0.5 isn't real it's just that stores don't sell them in non whole quantities. You can prove the quantity exists quite easily by cutting an apple in half, now you have 0.5 apples. With a very precise knife you could cut yourself log2(5) apples. It's difficult but possible because the quantity exists.

BA is a little different because you don't really need dupes. The chance to roll the banner character is 0.7% and 200 rolls allow you to redeem.

So if you're looking at a singular banner you should definitely prepare for 200 rolls because 199 rolls is only a 75% chance.

his concept sorta makes sense and it checks out in practice
in geometry for practical applications you constantly consider different parts as having zero space between them

technically nothing stops you from getting some digital circle, place a finite number of dots that represent the entire circle with literally 0 worth of units between them, and have the same formula/algorithm claim it has 0 circumference
>>
>>722837142
But you can't actually have a negative amount of a thing. They aren't real, they "exist" purely to make math simpler to write down.

You just factor it, bro.
(y-5)•(y^2+5y+26)
Technically there are 3 solutions since its a cubic function, but the 2 solutions of the quadratic we factored out here aren't in the reals.
