I always plan to play some spook game and ultimately enjoy the idea more than actually going through with it.Too many games on the plate. Though starting playing the first Thief (it has some spooky stuff), and if I finish that, probably replay RE (HD).

Once your brain knows that flight is the only option it loses tension cause you no longer have to actually consider facing the threat and with something like Mr.X it's not scary cause you can incredibly easily outrun him so there's no threat outside of when other enemies block your retreat but honestly those scenarios are too rare. Why the Xenomorph works is because you can't outrun him. Hiding and waiting doesn't work and you'll often die as the Xenomoph sniffs you out. You need to distract it and be smart about dealing with it. Im doing a zombie theme for this year, so I've been playing through Zombie games or Zombie adjacent games, Dead Space and Halo CE for the Flood while I try to finish The Walking Dead and all of its spin offs. Just beat Cold Fear and I did not like it. The camera sucks, gameplay sucks, and it has some of the most boring enemy variety I've seen. Not to mention the game doesnt have a fucking map, so I would get lost all the time. I think i wouldn't have hated this much if it didnt come out AFTER RE4 showed the world how to make a TPS horror game. Anyone got any other retro Zombie games that aren't RE? Trying my best to avoid just marathoning the RE series.

Silent Hill isn't scary, I played it at the wrong time in my life of where I'm not phased by much anymore. If I had played it during my childhood things might have been different. But old school survival horror has no effect on me anymore. It's just not scary. If Japan are considered to be the masters of horror then they're actually really tame. I see no meaningful difference between western and Japanese horror. There's nothing that elevates Japan above the west at all. It's totally exaggerated because we're on an anime website, rather than whether they're good at actually making anything creepy. They're not and some people think Kojima changed the landscape with P.T. but I just don't think it was that big of a deal too. I'm hard to scare. You have to basically shove horror into a non horror game to play tricks on my mind to be successful.

>>722834824It's an extremely puzzle-heavy game - most of them are manageable on their own, but if you're going for 100% completion, there's some super esoteric moon-logic stuff in there. Combat isn't a major feature and there's not too many mook enemies, but what's there is decent if a bit repetitive. Personally, for me the boss encounters (which are themselves puzzles) are extremely good and a big highlight - especially the one in the caves. Music is extremely good and fits the tone at all times, with plenty of tracks to choose from if you want to select a favorite. As for exploration: Best way to play is objectively Detective Mode so you need to memorize everything yourself and keep track of everything you've learnt, but I'm also aware that it isn't for everyone either.The plot is good too, but a lot of it is definitely tied to the Ordem webseries and yu might need a degree of familiarity with that just so you know what the fuck they're going on about at times.

It's hardly perfect but it is still one of my favorites.
Recommending at least the first Saw game if you haven't played it. It's been delisted everywhere but it's available on abandonware, plays fine on Windows 10. Takes places in an abandoned asylum. Game has nice moody colors, great atmosphere, Tobin Bell's raspy voice is taunting you over the intercom throughout the game, you're being attacked by a pig masked figure throughout the game. I played it for the first time in a long time and forgot what a great playthrough it makes for October time, great Halloween vibes. The combat is very janky but everything else about the game is pretty solid.
I've been playing horror games for literally decades and for some reason I never got around to the original Silent Hill games (bar 2 which I did finish a few years ago). I've nearly finished 1 now and 2 and 3 are installed and patched ready to go. Probably do 4 as well just to round it out. I'm really impressed by how well the first game holds up. I see people call it dated all the time, but mechanically I don't think it is at all. Many modern survival horror games play very similarly. I don't even think the visuals are an issue either as the great art direction carries it.

One of the best upgrades i've ever done as a horror game enjoyer is getting a good sound setup. Being able to actually hear things properly does wonders for immersion for a genre that heavily revolves around things you can hear but not see (the bump in the night, the growl of the monster in the fog, the padding of feet in the room above etc) to build tension.

I recently finished Clock Tower 3 without ever playing the first two, and what a ride it was. Going in, I honestly thought it would just be me running around a mansion all the time, Resident Evil like. I wasn’t expecting time-traveling, zombie serial killers, or Sailor Moon-esque bow battles to the death. It stopped being scary for me after London, but it was fine because I just wanted to see where I’d end up next. Fuck the final boss, though, what an annoying fight. I’ve never felt more like an NPC. He can stunlock you, kill you in three hits, and even instant-kill you. Oh and the Mc was pretty cute too
