After playing both back to back for the first time a few months ago I'd say 1 l, it felt like one of the greatest games ever made, while half life 2 and it's episodes felt like an 8 at best

1 mogs. Games should be all about scripted sequences and huge fun setpieces that the player is involved in that crucially do not take any control away from the player. Unfortunately gaming went down the wrong path and it's cutscenes and "cutscenes" (kratos carrying a boar for 20 mins straight.webm) galore, in part thanks to how half of HL2 is just standing around waiting for people to stop talking at you.

I always feel that Half-Life series is a wasted potential for being unable to combine both of those up until now; Boomer shooter fast-moving gameplay with cool physics interactions mixed in with smart NPC AIs to fight or interact with and all that in properly simulated alien ecosystems.
Ultimately different experiences. HL1 is all about closed spaces, running and gunning down everyone thanks to GoldSrc being a fork of Id Tech 2, cold sterile labs that change into dark dirty industrial sections that change into an alien in every sense of the word world of Xen. HL2 is all about dystopian and post-apocalyptic scenery, big open spaces, exploration, physics shenanigans. I'm biased because I really love Source engine no matter how dated it is, all games on it have that charm that I like
