Will never understand how this über-ludo failed
>>
It released in the same year ME3, Dishonored, Far Cry 3 and BLoPS 2 came out.
>>
>>722829906
easy. went way over budget.
>>
>>722829906
It's just bad after like 3-4 missions, like really worse than kane&lynch

It's 10 hour long, big ask for full price so it's pretty obvious to see why it was screwed. Plus it's Rockstar so they got resources. Just makes it a shame they waste so much time and money on online slop nowadays
>>
>>722829906
by having unskippable cutscenes
>>

call of duty is 4 hours long and sells trillions
>>

It's multiplayer
>>
>>722832486
mp3 had multiplayer too + it filled the third person niche
+ it's a cockstar game
>>
>>722829906
I like how Rockstar used it to test out their social club and several of the masks from this game are in GTAV.
>>
>>722832559
Rockstar was a lot smaller back then

>>
>>722832638
literally the most popular game studio of all time since san andreas
>>
>>722832806
That's Nintendo. Rockstar is nowhere near their level.
>>
>>722829906
it's a movie with playable sections sprinkled in between
>>
>>722832931
Nintendo has more lawyers than game developes on roll.
>>
>>722829906
>conclude story with pure closure
>max murdered hundreds and should be in prison even if they were curropt villains
>"lol nvm hes a bodyguard in Brazil now"
>acts like a depressed fool in cutscenes
>litterally action slides down a fucking skyscraper in gameplay
>save the hostage mission
>do bad ass shit all mission and kill a battalion of men
>get to the hostage room
>litterally fall ass backwards through the door
>says some pithy shit about losing his touch after the hostage dies
>noir, self aware writing replaced with passing of the times and bad writing
Good gameplay tho. If you just skip all the cutscenes its a fun experience. It kind of butchered the character and the best level was new jersey. MP 2 was better.

If it was me just make it about max in jail trying to get out to pursue one last lead then make the twist hes insane like address unknown. Or is he? Boom. Slam dunk.

Panama remains my favourite level, despite being just a long corridor. Boat levels are cool.

It didn't fail for me, the gameplay is great and when the music kicks in on the airport I instantly cum.

It has a really cool atmosphere and soundtrack. Kind of an ass to play tho.

Another brilliant thread from a shitskin /v/edditor

Personally, I think it sucks. But a more realistic answer is that nobody was going to be hyped for yet another third person cover shooter in 2012.
>inb4 you're playing it wrong if you think it's a cover shooter
Doesn't matter if that's the impression it gave to everyone. It simply looked like all the other games so people passed on it. And Rockstar always goes crazy with budget so I imagine that hurt the return on investment too.
>>
>>722829906
I remember buying this at release and being completely floored by the level of details this game had, like the clothes wrinkle moving realistically as Max moved.
>>
>>722833373
Yea, I played it again recently and it still holds up great.

This, and also nonstop scripted set pieces. You never really feel like you're in control of Max, it's more like you're watching an interactive movie that occasionally lets you control his aim.

the real answer is that an estimated 100-120 million dollars for a 5 hour shooter is just ridicoulous

great game though, every dollar on display

The game is amazing. I don't get all the hate, I only agree with the loading screens and compacted corridors but you can blame the PS3's 256mb of ram, when the game released 4gb ram on PCs was already common, so if it was PC focused like the original MP1 and MP2, it could have much larger levels.
>>
I still didn't finish it, it's unbearable.
Constant interruptions of gameplay with cutscenes. Constant whining and overexplanation of everything by Max inner monologue, it killed the character for me. He isn't a cool strong silent type anti-hero whisky-drinking-cigarette-smoking-noir-cop like they wanted him to be and how zoomers view him, he's a whiny bitch who can't shut up for a minute. All this completely destroys the immersion. This is the least immersive game I ever played, a tetris game is more immersive that this because no one is nagging you to do something.
>see men in military wests
>Max: these guys wear military gear, must be some kind of paramilitary police or something
>see guy gets shot
>Max: they shot him!
MP1 and 2 had the classic noir like inner dialogue, but it was mostly in the comic book cutsceces and rarely to clarify what is happening because graphics were so primitive wasn't always obvious on a quick glance. There were plenty of time to immerse and breath in the atmosphere.
Continuing my rant: ugly disgusting visual effects, ugly high contrast palette, mouse acceleration that you cannot disable, annoying "realistic" animation system that causes lag, extremely fast gameplay loops between cutscenes, weird "realistic" weapon system, very generic shitty story that everyone regards as some kind of masterpiece for some reason.

unskippable cutscenes. too many of them. also set in a third world shithole instead of comfy snowy nyc

Rockstar discovering euphoria for gta4 and then using the same "stumbling meat puppet on a string" controller for all their subsequent games was such a mistake.

The entire plot hinges on max being a retard and unable to piece anything together without help. If you lay the whole plot out chronologically it makes max seem incompitent at best or at the very least deliberately negligent but the game frames it as max didn't realize because 'muh alcohol.
The game plays great and still looks great for a game that is over a decade old but my god is the plot lazy.
>>
Very poor replay value. If you know where you're going and roughly where enemies are going to be you get from cut scene to cut scene too fast, it is difficult to get into it. The gameplay itself is also more realistic or cinematic but less fun than the previous games, and the setting isn't bad but it isn't the pure over the top noir that it used to be. I don't know why they had to fuck it up just do the same shit again but add katanas and kung fu which is what people modded into the game, not favela maps.
>>
>>722829906
shooting and aiming felt incredibly shitty to me, in MP2 I could do all kinds of crazy shit while clicking heads with just a beretta, but in 3 it was incredibly hard to land shots and move around without getting shot consistently.
Game was still pretty good overall, I just think it took too long to come up with the sequel.
>>
>>722847102
MP3 on PC has some weird mouse acceleration or smoothing that you cannot turn off.
>>
>>722832236
MP3 has a lot of fun single player extras though
SP games should unironically rip off its arcade mode
you haven't beat max payne 3 until you no death it on the hardest difficulty after platinuming all stages on score and new york minute
only insane thing about this is that they did it on a game that uses cutscenes to hide load times lmao

Both chuds and libtards (although the latter will never admit it) hated the Brazilian setting. Americans despise the third world (not blaming them).
This game never had a chance because of this.
>>
>>722829906
probably cause it's complete dog shit

it was the most expensive game ever made at the time and was a reboot of a moderately popular cult classic. there was no way it was going to be a success in that context. there weren't that many fans and the fans that did exist would have a mixed at best reaction to rockstarifying remedy's quirky pulp.
>>
>>722848953
This. Ironically it's super popular with latin monkeys for the same reason, the game is cathartic to them like nothing else is.

You can skip them.
You usually can't because the game is loading in the background though.
The PC version fixes this.
>>

It captures the Brazilian atmosphere pretty well. The offices, buildings, interiors, it all feels very Brazilian.
>>
>>722829906
It's not Max Payne. It's Man on Fire: The Video Game and also a love letter to Tony Scott movies, as pretty much every Rockstar game is a love letter to someone's movies. If you treat it as an adaptation, it's a hell of a game. If you wanted a new Max Payne game, it just isn't, and you're left disappointed.

The mexican levels were so fucking ugly

>But a more realistic answer is that nobody was going to be hyped for yet another third person cover shooter in 2012
yup, there were so many shooters coming out. even with rockstars name it got lost in the shuffle. funny if it came out today it would probably 10x as successful
>>
They revealed it with bald Max in a Hawaiian shirt.
>>
>>722829906
it was the 3rd game in a franchise that tried desperately to pull in new fans while alienating many older fans, appealing to neither group
>>
>>722829906
>moviegame with unskippable cutscenes
>braindead cover shooter gameplay for 10 hours straight
Geez guys I wonder why it flopped???!!!!
>>
>>722829906
Max Payne is such a flop of franchise. Max Payne 1 sold okay. Max Payne 2 flopped. The Max Payne movie was dogshit and flopped. Then R* was like “we love max payne” and bought it off Remedy. Spent ungodly amounts of money to produce one of the best looking 360/PS3 game ever. Lost an insane amount of money on it and yet they STILL like Max Payne enough to hire remedy to remake the first 2 games likely because they literally can’t spare people due to GTA6
>>
>>722846182
>The entire plot hinges on max being a retard and unable to piece anything together without help
Almost like it's a major theme in the game??????
>>
>>722854723
its funny those remakes have a good chance of flopping to if it comes out anywhere near gta 6
>>
>>722841320
GTAIV and MP3 are the only times Rockstar used Euphoria right
