Unironically, as much as "hardcore gamers" don't care for it, the Wii sparked some life back into the industry since it made Nintendo the "ok, they might do something different and unique" option while PS/Xbox were the "same as last time but more power" option. Nintendo also knows they can make crazy money with movies, they have a literal theme park for offering "fun for everyone" experiences, they have toys and merchandise galore, and more. Mix that in with farting out a new Mario game on their handheld to keep the IP strong and recognizable, and Nintendo's set. Games still are their big thing, so it'd be stupid for them to just close their game studios and all that. They aren't going to even consider that (at least not for some decades), but Nintendo knows the trajectory of the industry just like Sony and Microsoft do. So they branched out. They're done JUST being the company who makes video games. They're on a path to become the literal Japanese Disney with has a brand that is encompassed of "fun for everyone".
