Will it be able to appeal to both PC and console gamers? Or will it appeal to neither? I'm interested to see if they can actually pull off such a hybrid console.

>APU/Chip
Called “Magnus,” built by AMD
>Die Size
Approx. 408 mm2 (largest ever for a console)
>Comparison to PS6 console die
~46% larger than the “Orion” die speculated for PS6

>Design/architecture
More similar to PC-oriented chips, possibly using modular or “bridge die” approaches
>Memory / RAM
Suggestion of a larger RAM capacity than PS6 to support its hybrid/PC ambitions
>Hybrid / PC integration
There’s a theory that the device might act as a console/PC hybrid - supporting more than just typical console applications

>Price expectation
Could exceed US$ 800, maybe up toward $1,200, due to high cost of such a chip
>Release timeframe
Targeted for 2027

Okay but what about the games?
>>
>>722987909
If it can play PC games properly, then that's all it needs to do. If this shit can actually play CS2, League, WoW and other PC early access FOTM game from Steam then that's all it needs.
>>
>>722987760
Next gen is shaping up like the PS2 vs Xbox gen.
Sony going for a small, cheap, weak console anybody can have access to.

Xbox are going for the big powerful box that costs an arm and a leg.

If the PS6 sells for $500 and the Xbox $1,000 then they are just gonna fail again. For starters all games will be made for the weaker PS6 anyway, so all the additional resources of the Xbox will only be used for higher Fps and resolutions. At the end we'll still be playing the same games across all platforms.
>>
>Xbox Series / PS5
The generation that never was. We're already seeing leaks for a successor to a generation that never got off the ground.

>>722988573
Nah, there is nothing that could save Xbox at this point. At least Series consoles had a lower entry price point compared to Sony and it worked well for a while, but Microsoft failed to provide games to support the system.
And this whole Hybrid PC thing defeats the core purpose of a home console. It's no longer plug and play, so why bother? At that point just build a gaming PC.
>>
>>722988573
I feel like Xbox wants to give Steam Machines a go again, they realize more and more people are migrating towards PC since those don't need generational leaps to keep playing your games, Steam Machine failed due to Linux being barely able to play any games + so many models they didn't know who to optimize for, Microsoft releasing pre-build PCs that are actually far more powerful that what you could build yourself around that price might not be a bad idea, but 1200$ they may as well forget about the children/teenager audience.

PS5/Xbox Series are trending 12 million units behind PS4/Xbox One within the same time frame. This is not due to Xbox selling a lot less since people are not moving to Sony, but ditching home consoles.
This is expected to continue into the next generation as well due to Sony and Microsoft's inability to provide system sellers.
>>
>>722988573
>If the PS6 sells for $500 and the Xbox $1,000 then they are just gonna fail again.
This is true, but the leaks suggest that it could be some sort of console/PC hybrid. When people see or hear the word "PC", all of a sudden, they're ready to pay extra. Makes sense, it's a PC. If Microsoft can deliver a powerful PC for around a ~1000 bucks that handily outperforms a DIY gaming PC, and it has an intuitive UI interface/small form factor, then they might be actually able to ask that much. They'll no doubt plaster the word "PC" all over their reveal presentation on their console, and that you'll be able to do whatever popular streamer will be around in 2027.
>>
People are leaving Xbox in droves because of the price hike for their subscription service.
Also who the fuck cares about new consoles when we still haven't gotten any current gen games.

Or will they release another poor-bait alternative like the Series Shit that will hold the entire generation back again?

>>
>>722990681
The point of the entire console is, I assume, to have a relatively powerful PC that is small, easy to pick up, and runs an OS where you can easily switch between console and PC mode.
>>
>>722990807
How do they offset the costs then? Consoles usually sell at a loss and make up the difference with licensing costs/subscriptions. If they can't lock you into the console mode it'll have to be priced like a PC, that's not a product a PC gamer would want due to the lack of power and upgrade options and a console gamer wouldn't want it because of the cost.

Sony is doing that next gen with their handheld

Console exclusives and raising the price as the gen goes on.

>>722990908
It might have something to do with that console running a version of Windows. Microsoft is scared of SteamOS. Windows is despised by just about everyone. If there was a viable alternative, especially for gamers, they would be all gone. That's one reason
>>
>>722990908
maybe they ask for a cut from steam sales? It's a new machine that can block steam from use all together, so they can give valve an ultimatum either you give us a cut from sales or we block you

Given how MS suits act they might actually be delusional enough to try that as if Valve is running a charity for $1T companies.

The hybrid bullshit is unlikely, it will be walled with signed apps. I would only buy an Xbox if I can run Linux and play games from GOG - pretty much if I can bypass MS business models. 9 happening.
>>

PS6 is not a PS6 Pro. How will they justify an $800 PS6 Pro if the the base PS6 is already $800? It will be $600 at most.

They’ve been releasing games. They just haven’t been very good.

I think MS will try to nudge people into buying games from the MS Store with the promise that those games will be "optimized" for Magnus. If you buy your games from Steam or GOG, you'll be taking a gamble on poor performance, possible glitches, you name it.

>>
>>722990681
The assumption would be that if they're doing some sort of PC/console hybrid then you'd be able to switch from an Xbox Rog Ally Windows 11-esque mode to a console mode. As it is apparently on the Xbox Rog Ally side of things it's using a heavily trimmed down W11, so I imagine they'd just repeat that for the new Xbox.

The W11 mode would have the whole PC setup that pushes the Microsoft Store and maybe allows you to throw on Steam or other launchers but is kept limited so you can't hack the thing or anything easily while the Xbox mode would grant you access to the Xbox ecosystem and all the games that work on that. Considering they refused to make all Xbox games work natively on the XRA despite being $1000 and it's strictly a PC handheld I doubt they'd ever allow PC to run stuff like Lost Odyssey natively or through a translation layer until the Xbox was well and truly dead to justify people staying with GamePass and their ecosystem of purchases.
>>
who cares, xbox is dead

>>722999775

It's a device that would allow people to take advantage of Xbox's multiplayer servers and backwards compatible games along with their library of 20+ years while also having access to a PC that should theoretically be able to run Steam or other PC stuff albeit in a locked down way. Many people do not want to touch PC because it's too convoluted or troubleshoot-y which is why the Steam Deck has taken off even with casuals. The Xbox Rog Ally has a custom version of W11 that basically throws you into a special frontend with no desktop or anything that lets you access the Microsoft Store, Xbox app, and GamePass games, so I imagine it would be like that which would be braindead simple and impossible to mess up for the casual end user.

If the price is truly $800-$1500 like the rumors are stating it's going to be it's basically dead in the water. If it's essentially an Xbox Rog Ally but with a console mode you can switch to that's something the XRA should have been, not a standalone console. I'm still baffled the XRA can't play Xbox games, that's like the #1 thing everyone wanted.
>>
I have a very hard time seeing Magnus being a success. It sounds like it offers all the downsides of consoles, none of the advantages, and potentially pretty pricey. People will either buy a PS6 or just go ahead and go and buy a PC. Also, I see along people sticking with PS5 and not even upgrading to PS6 if they already have one.

>>
>>722987760
But why would anyone buy a hyper expensive future Xbox?
Not like it's gonna have any exclusives from either Xbox themselves or third-parties. And multi-platform games are gonna be built for PS6, and probably for quite a long time for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Even right now the fucking PS4 is still getting games because not every game needs to be designed for the current console gen.

Almost nobody build their PC's buddy. You might see news like: oh noes Gpu's are sold out everywhere this and that but in reality that happens because usually stores only carry like 5-10 Gpu's. That's how insignificant that market is.
>>
>>722987760
So it's an overpriced console with no games and an underpowered PC with locked down hardware? Wow, sign me the fuck up.
>>
One thing the leaks in OP's post didn't mention is how Microsoft has no more faith in the console market, and rightfully so, it's a market that's not growing anymore. Microsoft wants to focus on PC market, that's where the future is. Of course, in Microsoft fashion, they fucked it all up 2 decades ago by abandoning the PC market and allowing Valve to dominate this market. They're trying to wiggle themselves back in.

The Xbox console platform is fucking dead. It has come to the point where developers are literally skipping the Xbox in favor of putting their games on PC. Hell, fucking Sony caved in and brought their games to PC. Helldivers is literally more successful on PC than fucking PlayStation. You have to bring your shit to PC is what I'm trying to say.
>>
>>723002727
>it's a market that's not growing anymore. Microsoft wants to focus on PC market, that's where the future is
I agree and this was easy to see coming years away, but the question is how the fuck does this new "xbox" fit into the picture?
It can run some x86 software, but at the end of the day it'll never be a PC. It doesn't run Windows. (right?) It probably won't play games from anything but Microsoft's own store, either. So it's still basically a console... sure, it can be a "DirectX Box" like these consoles were originally supposed to be, but if it costs $800 the cheapo audience would probably rather buy PS6 for less money while the premium audience would buy a GPU with that.

also, Microsoft doesn't even benefit from selling strong hardware. They're a cloud computing giant. If anything they should want the market to move away from local computing and funnel everyone into XCloud type stuff. So it's like an anti-synergy with their business model.

They bet big on cloud gaming and subscriptions... so they special-ordered expensive custom hardware to run games locally?
They want to draw people into their ecosystem... so they charge $800 to enter?
They're moving away from consoles... so they queued up another console? Everything is an Xbox... so let's make yet another xbox, but it's more expensive and restricted than your phone, PC, etc?

I don't think the left hand knows what the right hand is doing here honestly
>>
>>723001754
>that is already mostly covered by free emulators
Casual audiences believe emulation is illegal and immoral. The casual audience is not going to grab BIOSes, source games, and so on. As it is people find sourcing the easiest things to find on Google like NES games an impossibility even if they do get over those hang ups. This can be seen on the Chinese handhelds which casuals consider bricks if they don't come with the e-waste microSD cards that they dump duplicate roms onto and call it a day.
>millions of cheap secondhand xbones, series consoles and 360s
Xbones can only play BC games released specifically when the Xbone was out. They eventually phased out Xbone getting any more BC titles and instead started doing stuff for the Series systems which have exclusive BC games for them that can't be played on the Xbone. You're also forgetting that people want the advantage of stronger systems when BCing games from systems like the Xbone and Series systems.
>>
>>722987760

GTA VI is getting delayed until holidays 2026. By the time it becomes a system seller for Xbox Series and PS5 new consoles will get released. A PC version will come sometime in between too
>>
>>723005627
Ps5 is probably going to get it in may. And pc will probably get it in 2028 or even later since its gonna be bigger than v, which took two years to come to pc
>>

>Ps5 is probably going to get it in may.

I hope you are right because I want to play it in May, but I just somehow doubt it. Cockstar went radio silence again, so if they don't start a huge marketing campaign before November ends it's 100% getting delayed.
>>
>>723005627
>system seller for Xbox
bwuahahah
>>
>>723006229
They probably will. RDR2 is likely to drop before the end of the year and I’m sure the switch 2 release had something to do with the delay. It would be bad to try and compete with a brand new Nintendo console close to the height of the holiday season.
>>
>>723005627
Since GTA 6 is releasing in 2026, we can conclude that the 10th generation consoles are NOT releasing in 2026. Rockstar (and other developers) already know the expected release dates of the new consoles. GTA 6, like GTA 5, was strategically developed to maximize sales on an outgoing generation of consoles and get another revenue boost with an "enhanced" edition of the game on the new consoles.

So, what's most likely going to happen is that Rockstar will release GTA 6 on the Xbox Series and the PS5, then a year or so later they'll come out with a "next-gen" version for full price in 2027 with the launch of the new consoles.

The only real way they could probably salvage things if they'd bring back physical media again without much updates bullshit and start caring about making games instead of pushing media center model.
Because of consoles not having new exclusives and shit going digital, more and more people move on to PC or go back to older systems. It's already happening and people are rather picking retro stuff. I remember how it started with Xbox One and now both PS5 and Xbox got same problem.
Most people prefer owning things and consoles being fully digital, unless it's possible to hack them, is a deal breaker. Not to mention all that fucking e-waste that is going to be generated over the years.
>>
>>722989228
That's actually really good seeing as Xbox died two years ago and MS stopped making them last year. For revenue to be the highest it's ever been shows a dedicated user base with the willingness to spend money.
>>
>>723007275
I think you have it backwards. The vast majority of people don't care about "owning" anything and just want the most convenient entertainment at the cheapest price. Albums died to streaming, DVDs died to streaming, discs and cartridges died to digital distribution, etc.
The demographic that wants physical stuff are basically collectors and they spend like whales, they're a tiny niche that spends an exorbitant amount. If they want to pander to those guys they'd be massively slashing their userbase by necessity, they could still make money but it'd be a totally different model

I no longer care about Xbox products or anything Microsoft made. I have owned a Series X since launch and it has been my main console since. The $30 Gamepass price made me rethink being an Xbox gamer. I've been one since the OG big boy. Their prices keep going up and their first party offerings keep going down. I do not care for Fortnite whatever pass or freebies in f2p games. I do not play live service slop.
I enjoyed Avowed, I enjoyed South of Midnight, I enjoy their single player offerings, I do not play Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, or Fallout 76, or any CoD garbage.
The only game from them I am looking forward to right now is Clockwork Revolution. Wasteland 3 is in my top 5 games of all time and I very much so trust the developers of inXile to make a great game. But I will buy the game on Steam.

I have transitioned off of Windows and away from Microsoft products entirely. I run CachyOS on my desktop now and it's been going good for 2 weeks now. I will keep my Xbox to play my physical games but I will no longer buy any products for it.

The most I'm looking forward with this new gen of consoles is that Ray Tracing will be the defacto way of delivering lighting, shadows and reflections and this will wreck a huge chunk of the PCtard market that will either be forced to finally upgrade their old ass 1060-3060's or get left behind forever because we are not going back. Except PC market will always be a thing, retard. PC market is separate niche and it's always ahead. It's consoles that struggle to keep up and the corporate greed that throws wrenches into gears in case of progress.
Ray tracing is still a meme gimmick and most devs still struggle with proper implementation of it, instead they prefer putting pre-baked lighting into games.

I don't think so, the Magnus APU started as a traditional console APU and then was reworked from the ground up to be a desktop APU. Anyone saying Microsoft themselves are making this console just like they did the OG Xbox to Xbox Series is an idiot. They're clearly done making those and will have third parties make the consoles using the Magnus. This pretty much means backwards compatibility is getting axed, completely. Something Microsoft is known for doing anyways.

devs prefer ray tracing actually because it just works by pressing a button and letting the hardware handle it instead of waiting weeks to bake lighting and readjusting and waiting weeks to bake again.

It's chips that were co-developed by Microsoft, Microsoft will give it their partners for free. If they can't do that, shove that shit in the cloud infrastructure. They don't need another home console. If you want me to be truthful. I'm getting tired of this dick measuring contest between Sony and Microsoft that's been going on since 2006, they've only stagnated the market, not grow it. It's time for a change.

I can barely tell the difference in games from the 7th gen to games from now. These two turds have been holding back both console and PC gaming for too long. Anyone would get tired of gaming if they just had a PlayStation or Xbox.

Kepler claims they are now. Too bad no one is buying it
>>
>>723018020
Yeah and the profits increase massively over the course of the consoles lifespan. PS4 late gen (2018/19) was probably selling for 3-4x the manufacturing costs.
>>
>>723019038
Yeah, because they've raised the price
>>
The giant Albatross around Xbox's neck is that to properly sell "It's a PC AND a console" Microsoft would have to get rid of paid online, which they won't ever do. All this console will succeed in doing is make people realize what bad value consoles actually are.
>>
>>723019163
That is going to probably be their game plan according to an earlier leak. Sell stuff at profit, don't chase after being number one, have 20-30m gamepass subscribers, and just focus on profits.
>>
>>723019360

>shaping up like the PS2 vs Xbox gen
PS2 and Original Xbox launched at the same price, both $300. Get it straight jack. MS was taking more of a loss on the Xbox hardware but they needed the price to be competitive out of the gate
>>
>>723019360
I see them ditching paid online as a last ditch effort to save their console hardware business. I think this would actually generate quite some buzz
>>
>>723006282
MS probably won't do this, but the smart thing would be to steeply discount the Series S, to $250 or less, shortly before GTA 6 comes out.
Make that by far the lowest barrier to entry for the biggest game ever, and Xbox could indeed gain some market share
>>
>>723019967
At that point all they're trying to do is liquidate dead stock. They're not releasing another console.
>>
>>723002727
The type of games that Sony makes (movie game slop) are too expensive and take too long to come out. They even admitted that they're releasing one first party game per year going forward. There's also the fact that their games are selling worse than the PS4 era did. Their latest game Yotei is doing 40% worse than Ghose of Tsushima. It's no wonder they're putting their games on PC and even on other consoles.
>>
>>723019360
The purpose of every console since the 8th gen has been a cheap budget alternative to PCs. Everything is so standardized now and every console is just a box that runs standard software, no unique controls or special capabilities or whatever.

>make people realize what bad value consoles actually are.
They actually used to be a good value. The value just got eaten away at over time. They used to offer tons of exclusives, not anymore. They used to be dirt cheap, not anymore. Online fee used to be a lot cheaper or didn't exist. Backwards compat. Renting games. Physical discs are going away too. All the value is. The console market has been squeezed so fucking hard for every last drop of value it's drying up, and it can't accommodate both Xbox and PS competing anymore. On top of that, vidya was an early adopter of the modern online digital entertainment model. Now premium vidya has mobile games, streaming services, and social media to compete with. There's just not enough breathing room for xbox to bumble around in anymore.

I think there was some quote from monster hunter devs saying "PS5 is a barrier" which became a meme, but really if you think about it that's what consoles have become in general. A barrier to entry, which artificially prevents you from accessing their games, rather than a custom platform that enables those games to exist in the first place. The truth is, every game coming out now can be made for either PC or mobile. Only Nintendo still makes games that actually utilize unique console hardware... and honestly, after the early Switch era they've been moving away from that too. Sure the joycons can simulate ice cubes or whatever, but no games do that anymore.

>>
>>723020168
They want people to be invested in the Xbox ecosystem, which is harder to do if all they're offering is a PC storefront and cloud streaming services.
So there will be something at least filling the niche of another Xbox home console, even if it's different from before and maybe it's a reference spec for console-like PCs with Xbox branding that they ask other companies to make
>>

Steam Deck 2 probably at around 7 million units now, that number is old. In terms of gaming, that 7th gen era is finally ending. AAA was never going to last. Xbox is going to die, then PlayStation is going to die, gaming will just be Nintendo and PC. This will lead to a return to the types of games we got in the 3rd-6th generation for consoles and PCs.

>If the price is truly $800-$1500
You can bet it will be above $1000. If it will be a PC - it doesn't matter what integrated die will they use - it will be out of the budget of the console gamer. Which will kill it instantly unless somehow millions of PC gamers decide they want to give up any and all kind of upgrade option and buy this hoping MS won't make the same mistakes they made with their previous machines where the hardware was effortlessly beaten by the PS. Currently I wouldn't be surprised if the rumors would be true and Xbox compatibility will be just cloud streaming.
But my biggest issue is the following: MS want to build a cheap prebuilt which plays "all" the games. But for the average player that is the Playstation which gets every major release and won't shit itself when you will install something where the dev doesn't care the XboxPC runs it well or not. All people will see is a ~$700 Playstation and a $1500 XboxPC because the lower Xbox tiers will be outdated in a year. Phil SPencer can prepare his anus for the comparison videos wher the PS6 will look marginally worse but cost half of his box.
>>
>>723023924
I just started saying this around the end of the 8th gen and start of the 9th gen. It's clearly going in that direction. You can't keep expecting people to wanting the same shitty 7th gen games and not push anything forward. That's why Sony's and Microsoft's gaming market has only declined instead of grown, they offer nothing new.
>>
>>723024083
I think at that point, people will just get a Switch 2, a Steam Deck 2, or a prebuit PC and just not bother with anything PlayStation or Xbox with only the shills kicking and screaming.

>handheld PCs have only sold 5 million units combined
we are only in the second gen of handheld pcs. i predict the market for handhelds will probably double in the next 10 years. millenials now get in the age where they cant sit for 10hours per day anymore and want to game on the couch and in the bed. handhelds are perfect for that.

making cross gen games will be a problem, so we might see game developers moving to PS6/Xbox5 and abandoning the PS5/SeriesX relatively quicker compared to previous consoles. Next gen will create a new standard of game development centered around AI upscaling, Ray Tracing and complex methods of compression, none of which are present on current gen systems.

People like to lumb Xbox and PS together but the two brands are in a very different situation. Xbox is both alienating their leftover userbase (half of their consoles were sold for less than $300 with dirt cheap Game Pass) and makes hardware on hopium. I don't even begin on the issue of trying to sell AMD GPUs on a market where everyone wants a RTX. Meanwhile Sony - at least for the next gen - can simply position their console as a cheap "prebuilt". Especially if they get part of the disillusioned Xbox userbase.
>>
>>723024761
>none of which are present on current gen systems
PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 can all do ray tracing to some extent.
In some cases it's rudimentary, like having RT reflections here and there and nothing else. In other cases it's impressive use of RTGI that defines the whole overall look of a game and it's pretty impressive in its own right even though newer PCs can obviously go way beyond it.
Switch 2 has DLSS, PS5 Pro will get FSR 4 or something similar. It's only base PS5 and Xbox Series that lack high quality upscaling

Not really, they're somewhat different but headed in the same direction. End result is both will be third parties and both will shift how they develop games. Sony will drop their western studios and focus on eastern studios and outsourcing their older ips as a shift back to AA development, Microsoft will gut most of their studios, shift to outsourcing for both current and older ips, and use the money makers to aid in bringing back older ips but most if not all of their games are shifting back to AA. In terms of AAA third parties, most of those are going to die if they don't shift back to AA. Future of gaming is no one is going to control third parties anymore on how they make their games. Games will return to creativity and innovation deciding the direction of games. Nintendo and PC will be the last ones standing and nothing will change, thus console and PC exclusives will return, this time for real.
>>
>>723025027
What did you smoke? Consoles are not $700, not everyone has a PC and Xbox is in the process of making enemies of their most loyal users. The Xbox platform is as volitale as it can get. There is zero trust MS will deliver anything they promise.
This entire "Xbox Mode" is still a promise. Digitalfoundry and others already confirmed the current Xbox mode performs the same as a manually debloated Windows, all of the promised features (downloading shaders for example) will be patched later if ever. All while the system misses basic functions like sleep mode or loading Rog Ally settings in games automatically.
The chance of Microsoft can deliver a hardware which performs well, a software which performs well and a single reason for people to get this instead of a proper PC other than a vague marginal price advantage is pretty much zero.
>>
>>723026027
Consoles are not *all* $700 but MS and Sony are now both offering highest-end models which cost more than that.
Whereas the highest end ones last gen were $400 and $500
>>
>>723025909
I wish I was 12 and believe in fairy tales. Sony will never drop their western studios who make all the money for the company. There is no reason for them to invest in the east other than external exclusivity deals. The current direction of Microsoft is dropping all the smaller titles and moving everyone to support the 8 or so gigantic IPs.
The AAA scene might crash (people say this for more than a decade now...) but these gigantic publishers can't and won't scale back because that is their only advantage.
>>
>>723026230
Xbox doesn't have a high end console. They sell a simple Series X with 2TB internal drive for more than the PS5Pro because they are retards.
Despite the console prices are indeed rising you still need to spend a considerable more on a PC and this will make sure the next Xbox will not be competitive in the console market.

Just give me free xbox live, xbox 360 store back, the ability to play games from every xbox gen on it, no internet connection required, with multiplayer when there is internet (or give players the means to make that work themselves), built in in house emulators, and have controllers be innovative for once, I.E., programmable buttons as the DEFAULT. Also have it be long lasting and not die in 7 years, plus be repairable. Do that and I would buy the shit out of it.

Lastly, Make Multiplayer Free Again. Nobody should have to pay a faggy subscription to use the internet they also already pay for. Keep the other benefits for gamepass behind a subscription and that's fine.

IF all of these things aren't incorperated there's almost 0 reason not to just play on PC. GayStation also has a stronger alure for me these days.

>Sony will never drop their western studios who make all the money for the company
Want to bet, they've been lacking on the money making for a while and blowing their budgets costing Sony a lot of money. Inclusivity has failed and AAA gaming is a money sink. In terms of gaming, I'm seeing Sony become less and less serious about it just like Microsoft, who cares more about AI. Sony will have Japanese make their games now which is going to lead back to a shift towards AA, creativity, and innovation. Microsoft will having live-service stuff to keep the money train going while also selling singleplayer stuff, but they're no longer going have studios making them, they're going to outsource mostly everything to third parties, anything small, if made would be made because of the money these tentpole franchises make, if they do bring back something old, don't expect it to get the Fable or Perfect Dark treatment. Something like that isn't happening again, it'll be something small. Everything is shifting back to AA with some money makers keeping things afloat. Sony and Microsoft are done spending billions on super franchises aimed to be movies. Everything they've been doing has been to reduce the cost heavily.
>The AAA scene might crash
It's currently crashing now and is on its last legs.

Because steamOS isn't windows and most people use windows because it simply supports more games and anti cheat. Notice how manufacturers aren't jumping at the chance to make steam versions of their handhelds but they're all investing heavily into their windows handheld lineups. Either we'll have more choice and better choices because consoles in their current state need to die already. There's absolutely no reason why a ps5 shouldn't be able to dualboot windows or Linux so people can run emulators and other stuff. they are trying to kill Xbox as a brand because it hasn't been profitable since 2019. by overpricing the hardware they can claw back some of the money they wasted buying all of the studios and then bail on the entire hardware market and pivot to game streaming.

Xbox PC gaming is going to get nuked in under five years
>>
>>723037036
Does it matter, those handhelds cost more than the Steam Deck, the next gen Xbox Partner handheld will cost more than the Steam Deck 2.
>>
>>723036543
Why wouldn't they? They already do it in the laptop market. Bunch of different vendors make their versions of windows laptops and Microsoft has the surface which is probably low volume but exists to debut their new tech like the copilot AI stuff on MS surface recently. Or Google with the pixel phones. Console appeal is dying but the PC gaming market is booming like never before. Steam concurrent player counts are reaching all time highs while consoles are selling worse than last gen. PS5 included.
>>
>>723037207
>game streaming
They're going to nuke that too. Microsoft's only gaming strategy they can go for in the coming years will be multiplatform. Can't even rely on Sony either giving they're also heading towards multiplatform.
>>
>>723037330
We'll have options at a range of prices which is the real win here.
>>
>>723037490
If they don't kill the console, it's definitely going the Surface Line.
>>
>>723037625
Even the weakest next gen Xbox handheld with a 15-watt power envelope will still cost more than the Steam Deck 2. The Magnus will not be able to reduce the price, it's too strong.
>>
>>723037614
Game streaming is already mature enough for them to fall back on, it will still exist but because it can infinitely scale up and down on Azure it will just become a much smaller part of Microsoft's revenue.
>>
>>723037689
The point is there is a lesser emphasis on pushing their console like it is now so they can take more risks and offer better tech and features, for a higher price of course. The 3rd party xbox vendors will do most of the heavy lifting because they'll probably be cheaper than whatever the next xbox is.

>Next gen is shaping up like the PS2 vs Xbox gen.
As some replies have already mentioned, the PS2 and Xbox both launched at the same retail price. But I feel it needs reiteration.
https://www.ign.com/articles/comparing-the-price-of-every-game-console-with-inflation

>For starters all games will be made for the weaker PS6 anyway, so all the additional resources of the Xbox will only be used for higher Fps and resolutions.
>At the end we'll still be playing the same games across all platforms.
The thing is, most games are already available across most platforms. That's the multiplaform world so many people have been begging for all these years. However, now that we have it, it's not restricted just to consoles. It's whether a game can run on a low-spec Chinese PC or the PS4 or the Switch 2 or a smartphone.

If you're worried about not getting the best graphical performance, worry not. The $5000 PCs with $3000 GPUs are for you. You'll get all the newest and greatest graphical features first on those rigs. That's also the new multiplatform world we live in. The best graphical features are going to be locked at the highest price point.

After all the covid inflation, $500 would be cheap for a high-end console in 2027. The Switch 2 is basically being sold at a loss in Japan at $340, and it's around a PS4.5. Maybe a Switch 2 that wasn't a handheld with a screen and just a box could go for maybe $300? So, yea. A $500 PS6 sounds cheap to me. But I think the PS6 will at least be $600.

>Others, including Gibson at MST, say the company could set a price that includes a margin for potential changes in the duties imposed on Vietnamese imports. He argued that — because the Vietnam export data lists the Switch 2 unit price for custom duties as $338 — “the final price will be $399 not including a game”, but including a buffer.

That's it. That's all Sony needs. The PS6 could be $800 bucks and the handheld could be $700 and it will be gobbled up. You seem to forget that the PS5 is already over 80 million despite nogaems. Some dude on 4chan or reddit or twitter is not relevant to their sales. However, total console sales as a whole are slowly dwindling/stagnant so who knows what they'll do when they release their shit in 2027 (supposedly).
>>
>>723020240
>Ps5 is a barrier to ai slop
That's what will happen if these devs got their way. Wilds only came out somewhat optimized because it targeted consoles. Plenty of indie games are coming out that look like they could have come out on the PS2, but they have huge performance issues. It's more like consoles are what help aid development and force devs to actually sit down and make playable experiences.. otherwise you end up with shit like Star Citizen which is yet to be finished.

Pricing the PS6 that high will simply destroy the market for it. Like when the PS3 launched at $499/$599 or when the 3DS launched at $250. It's not a good business decision. Sony also isn't going to take huge losses on the PS6, so the PS6 is going to be a weak console.

But you may ask, what will happen to the PS5/PS5 Pro? That's a good question. I think Sony will just discontinue them.

If the rumors about a PS6/PS6 Portable are true, there won't be a market for the PS5/PS5 Pro anymore. Sony can't seem to bring down the price of the PS5 consoles, so it'll just stop making and selling them. The lower price Playstation option in 2027 will be the handheld PS6 or a potential PS6 "S" console.

We don't know the final specs and we don't know the price of the contracts Sony is making with AMD and other partners for the PS6. We can't yet know for sure how much the PS6 will cost to make and so we can't know know for sure how much it can be sold for. The only detailed speculation I've seen of a potential breakdown of the parts that would go into a PS6 is MLiD's guess.

https://x.com/nib95_/status/1960940608140280085

I personally really like this for how clean it is and the range of prices in the guess. There's the cost of the console and how Playstation could price it, either for a low, medium or high margin. But high-price consoles do not historically sell well. It would be a bad idea for Sony to sell the Playstation 6 at a really high price.

Just based on vibes, I think most interested early adopters of the PS6 would be happy with a $600 PS6. It would induce a lot of demand for it. At $700, I think you're risking a stalled launch that would require price cuts 6 to 12 months after launch. I think keeping demand high and having mild to moderate shortages for 3-6 months would be the better option. So, maybe $650 if I were to take a guess right now.

Of course, China just imposed export restrictions on REE the other day and Trump said he's going to retaliate with 100% tariffs. The geopolitical situation may change these prices significantly by 2027. But, the PS6 will have been in development after experiencing Covid, lockdowns, inflation, and both Trump 1.0 and 2.0. If Playstation is smart, it'll have factored these geopolitical challenges into the PS6's price.

Sony can't get this thing any lower, they can keep it from reaching $1000 but they can't keep it from being around the same price as the PS5 Pro. As far as this fabled PS6 S console, that's just the handheld, nothing more, that'll be $600+ since there is no way they can get it even close to the Switch 2's price.

>>723040814
I can see Sony taking a massive loss on hardware margins to sell the console and handheld at $500-$600, at least for the first few years. The PS5 launched at a cheaper price than I expected and I expect the same to happen here. Also, it's probably the best time to extinguish Xbox once and for all.
>>723041387
>what will happen to the PS5/PS5 Pro? That's a good question. I think Sony will just discontinue them.
Doubt. it'll be kept around as the "cheaper" option like Switch 1 is to Switch 2. Unlike the Switch 1 and Piss4, however, is that the PS5 has everything it needs to continue having PS6/PS7 multiplats, like a fast enough SSD, enough RAM, and expandable storage.
>>
>>723042378
If even Kepler is putting the PS6 handheld at $500ish then I'm expecting somewhere there or in the $600. MLID thought the PS5 Pro would be $600. The PS6 home console is either in the $700 or the $800.

>This is not due to Xbox selling a lot less since people are not moving to Sony, but ditching home consoles.

Xbox is selling a lot less, but people are also not getting into consoles. I say not getting into, because I think that's where the deficit is happening. New adopters are not coming into the console ecosystem rather than people ditching consoles. I personally think the notion that console gamers are leaving consoles for PC or something else to be exaggerated. It's happening, but it's always happened to a degree. New people NOT coming into the console ecosystem is new.

In fact, all dedicated video game hardware has been in decline since the 7th generation. The Wii, PS3, 360, DS and PSP would add up to at least 450 million units. After the Wii U/3DS era, Nintendo went from supporting two hardware platforms to just one. After the Vita, Playstation dropped handhelds. Entire lines of hardware were cut during the 8th generation as smartphones and tablets started taking off. The peak of the dedicated video game device was in the late 2000s.

However, the Switch still sold 150M units and the PS5 has sold 80M units. With one hardware platform, Nintendo became more profitable than it ever did with two platforms that sold 100M units more combined than the Switch by itself. And the PS5 generation has been the most profitable gen for Sony ever. Clearly, these are still worthwhile and meaningful products for both Nintendo and Sony, even if total number of hardware units sold is trending downwards.

Everyone keeps acting like normalfags use Steam or know what a Steam Deck is to even attempt to think it's a good deal let alone prebuilt PCs. I don't understand why you guys who are enthusiasts can't think for five seconds how actual real life normal people play video games. It's like everyone in this site can't for five seconds understand how real life works when it comes to deciding what to buy.

Steam Deck 2 has no hope at all unless it's sold at all major stores in the same electronics section as the Nintendo and Sony sections. Even if it got that same luxury it would be equivalent to a Meta Quest 3 section which is dick all because Valve has no physical copies, Valve has no accessories, Valve basically has nothing but that specific system to advertise to window shoppers and it would be as forgotten as Best Buy's Rog Ally kiosks. Nintendo has Amiibos, third-party controllers, licensed MicroSD cards, physical games, multiple variations of their system, both Switch 1 and Switch 2, first-party accessories, eShop cards, DLC expansion cards, etc. Sony has first and third-party controllers, physical games, digital game cards, first-party accessories, and typically a discount section.

Prebuilt PCs cost a minimum of $800 if they want anything more than a Chromebook at Walmart or Best Buy and people will be cheaping out because that's a huge chunk of change which is the entire reason why people do not get into PC gaming in the first place.

The reality of the situation is that most people would have a PS6. They might get a Switch 2 if they have kids or are more into games than the average normalfag. PC gaming is off the table unless this person is an actual enthusiast and that includes the Steam Deck.
Steam is popular to people who already know of video gaming and even then the average everyday normalfag very likely has a huge Playstation library and going to Steam means starting over for the same games which they will not find worth it, especially on an SD
>>
>>723044025
I don't really care about normalfags on things, they treat things like a trend, and currently the gaming trend is dying, Nintendo and PC always had fans to hold up the fort, this isn't the case for Sony who got rid of every fan they had. They really should have built up on first party IPs instead of relying so much on third parties. Gaming is going to condense, and AAA gaming is going to die.

They don't have to price it below the PS5 Pro. They'll just stop making/selling it and then it won't be an option for consumers.

>that'll be $600+ since there is no way they can get it even close to the Switch 2's price.
If they make it as weak as the Switch 2, they could get close. I don't think the PS6, its handheld or the "S" are going to be powerful consoles. If they're not powerful, they won't cost as much to make, so Sony can sell them at not ridiculous prices.

>>723042975
The PS5/PS5 Pro won't be the cheaper option if the rumors about a PS6 handheld or PS6 "S" are true. At least if Playstation wants to sell them at a price most people will buy.

As I'm imagining it, the PS5/PS5 Pro will be discontinued and the PS6 "S", PS6 Handheld and PS6 home console will be like $450, $550, and $650 dollars. There's your new PS console line-up. Or something like that.

If this sounds weird, it is. Covid's impact still lingers. The price of the PS5 keeps going up. It's not a very affordable option if Playstation can't bring its price down. But since inflation has mostly stopped, maybe it could in time.

Still, I think Playstation would rather bring people over to the PS6 than the PS5. If the PS6 does have a cheaper "S" version, that seems like the hardware to push for price conscious consumers. Assuming there's not another pandemic, inflation stays in check, and trade wars don't flare up, the price of the PS6 "S" could be brought down over time, like consoles used to be able to do, and be an even more affordable option by the early 2030s.

I think it just depends how greedy Sony wants to be.

A PS6 handheld only $100 more than the Switch 2, sounds about right. A PS6 home console for $100 more than that sounds doable as well. But if Sony is greedy, they could price it higher. I just think with the overall decline of the console userbase, it would be a dumb idea to keep the entry point of getting into a PS6 high, especially since the way Playstation makes money is from the PS+ subscriptions and MTX. It's not from the selling the consoles.

Take Nintendo. In Japan, they're probably selling the Switch 2 at a loss. It's going for almost a $100 cheaper there. Why the price difference? Because Japan is Nintendo's base and they want people to adopt the Switch 2. They're willing to lose money on hardware sales in Japan to ensure there is a future generation of Nintendo fans there.

If Sony prices the PS6 too high, it could ruin the start of the next generation for them and I don't think there's room for error. If either Nintendo or Playstation fuck up a generation at this point, I don't know if they can recover.

One last point. The US market is Playstation's biggest and most important market. I would expect the price of the PS6 to be more reasonable there. The rest of the world? I dunno.

It's not, only reason they're most likely doing it still to test out features for OEMs and cloud. The only other thing this MAY have is some form of backwards compatibility, but will it be fully compatible with Xbox One games from 2013-2019?

Latest round of rumors regarding Sony is they're losing interest in America and are looking more towards Japan again, not like they'll take it back. If the current round of games flop, they're shifting back to Japan. chances are just going by the Pro, Sony won't sell at a loss as most rumors are pointing at and will sell at high prices. PlayStation hardware keeps selling less than previous consoles and their first party output is terrible. Sony even divested in PlayStation hardware. We're getting high prices, but hey, they may finally fix their controls on their controllers in Japan to go back to what the original button layouts were now.

Xbox is 100% done with disks. They were already trying to pull back from physical years ago and they even released an all digital SeX when they did the refresh a year or two back. Their new games aren't even on the disk anymore like Starfield and Indiana Jones.

Most big box stores don't even have an Xbox section anymore, or it's so small it only has like six games and no consoles at all. My local Best Buys don't carry the consoles, just a clearance section and CoD. My local Walmarts have the consoles but only a small section for CoD, Fifer, Madden, NBA2K, and maybe one or two discount games. My local Targets have maybe one or two SeS systems but never a SeX, and the games only exist in the clearance aisle of PS4/PS5/Switch 1 games thrown in with them.

>It's going to be more powerful that the Xbox Series S with significantly more RAM.
I'd expect it to be a generational leap in power, but maybe it won't be. Because the primary concern is not power. It's price. If the PS6/Handheld is too expensive, it may not sell well and that could have long-term negative affects on an already declining console playerbase.

IMO the smart thing for Playstation to do is to make the PS6 affordable, not powerful. Most of the games that make Playstation so much fucking money aren't even graphically impressive games. It's games like Fortnite and CoD and FIFA. CoD 2025 is launching on the PS4 and X1.

The Playstation 4 and Xbox One in 2025.

It's not about power. Developers aren't really all that concerned about power and diminishing returns on graphics makes pursuing them less attractive. But developers do want to make games faster and for wider audiences. If the PS6 or its handheld are priced too high, it won't just restrict the potential audience Playstation can get, but also the developers that will continue to support its platforms.

Switch 2 still has physical and since Game Key Cards are being effectively boycotted more companies are taking the hit on proper physical carts because no one wants GKC releases. Sega is like the only one still pretending people are fine with them.
PS6 will likely have a disk drive just because of what Shuhei said a few months back about him not seeing Playstation shy away from physical any time soon, but also because several internal leaks like the Insomniac one showed us that physical is still an enormous part of Sony's actual game sales. People were also flabbergasted the PS5 Pro didn't come with one which might add to that sentiment.

Microsoft is the only one actually pivoting away from physical copies.

Playstation's not going to trade the American market for the Japanese market. Even Nintendo's biggest market is America. But I could see a potential PS6 handheld could do better in Japan than a home console PS6. Japan seems to prefer handhelds to home consoles.

Sony doesn't have to sell the PS6 at a loss. It just has to sell it as small or even tiny profit. Or at cost. So, you can have an aggressively priced consoles, a moderately priced console, or a greedily priced console.

The PS5 moderately priced. The PS5 Pro was greedy. The PS5 was starting the current generation and was aiming at 100M units. The PS5 Pro was a mid-gen upgrade aiming at only 10-15M units. I'm not bothered that Sony was being greedy with the PS5 Pro. I think people who bought it are idiots with too much money. But the start of a new generation is a one time deal. If Playstation is greedy with the base PS6/Handheld, it could get very bad, very quickly for Playstation.

I can kind of see them doing the OLED refresh but at the same time it's fairly unnecessary, especially since people will expect the next one to come with it. They're also taking losses producing these things in general as a gamble to get more people into their ecosystem so I'd be willing to bet they're still going to be eating costs with the SD2.
Switch 1 had this same problem with people expecting its screen to be OLED and being disappointed so I wonder if Valve wants to go that route since it'll mean people know an OLED is a guarantee and lead to less sales on the SD2.

I'll use an extreme example. In 1970, the cheapest computer you could buy would cost you like $5000. Today, you could buy a chomebook for $100. Typically, the cost and therefore price of technology decreases over time.

Normally, without worldwide pandemics and trade wars, consoles dropped in price over time. The PS5 and the Switch haven't. (The Xbox series did experience a brief period of lower prices a few years ago, and despite recent official price hikes, the Xbox series are being discounted heavily at some retailers, probably because they know its dead weight.) But in real terms, they have. $500 in 2025 is not $500 in 2020. That's a consequence of Covid and Inflation.

The PS6 will be launching in 2027, years after Covid, but during potential trade wars between the US and China. That's something Playstation could account for by making the PS6 affordable. If Playstation wanted to make the PS6 affordable, all it would need to do is make it weaker. But with newer technology, which the PS5 Pro doesn't really have, it could still be more powerful for less cost.

Additionally, who would be unhappy if the PS6 ended up being more powerful and priced lower than the PS5 Pro? Only the idiots that bought the PS5 Pro and they'll just go out and buy the PS6 anyways cause they're idiots.

But I don't think the PS6 will be $500. That's too low. $600 seems like the lowest it would go to me, but I could see it being closer to $700 if Sony tries to be greedy. Pricing the PS6 at $700 would be a mistake to me.

Phil Spenser hurt the brand with his obsession with acquisitions. They must have panicked after Double Helix got bought by Amazon and decided to go on a buying spree. Had they not bought activision gamepass would be doing just fine and they wouldn't have needed to shutdown any studios. The hybrid pc console might work but they can't price it like the pc. Despite what sonyfags say people buy consoles because they are cheap and easy not for exclusives. Is the next xbox is $100 or more over the ps6 they are fucked.

You'd be right. That's why Playstation would be foolish to put out a $800 PS6. Now, if they put out a $600 PS6, I think that'll easily sell 15M in its first year.

The problem is that people already think the $450 for a Switch 2 is fairly unconscionable and it caused a massive uproar over the pricing. $600 would feel like suicide to most people, especially since no other system has ever been that much since the original PS3 which people already did not buy at that price and PS5 Pros/SeX systems are having a harder time selling than Slims, Disk PS5s, and SeS.

So, the Steam Deck 2 will have pretty much the same specs as the PS6 handheld but with an OLED screen with its AI features just being part of the chip, With Valve being able to hit $550, how is Sony even going to be able to compete with a PS6 handheld using an LCD screen that Project Amethyst thing is going to make that handheld cost more than the Deck 2 with a worse screen.

Because the Steam Deck 2 isn't really a competitor to the PS6 or its handheld. The PS6 is going to be a dedicate Playstation ecosystem handheld, the SD2 is going to be a mail-order PC handheld unless Valve does something differently. Stop thinking about this like an enthusiast, the SD2 is functionally irrelevant in this discussion to most people.

Those leaks are old and the sales data in them is even older. I'm sure Playstation doesn't wanna spook physicalfags, but the trend to digital, even with PS first-party games, seems clear.

https://alineaanalytics.substack.com/p/ghost-of-yotei-is-a-success-as-battlefield

If the PS6 has a physical option, it'll be optional, pricey, and hard to find. Physical discs of games will also be hard to come by.

Well, Sony's actual competitor Nintendo is most likely going to release a Switch 2 revision with an OLED screen in 2028 for the same price as the launch model with LCD with better battery, they may even release an OLED model with a 512GB SSD for $500 as well. How is Sony even going to compete with that?
>>

>but the trend to digital, even with PS first-party games, seems clear.
Oh for sure it's trending that way, but I don't see it until PS7 era and I think Nintendo will be the only one to keep it up past that for maybe one or two more generations. PS5 data is also very hard to take seriously because Sony groups all digital sales of basically anything on their store like DLC or microtransactions as part of digital purchases instead of just separating out games to actually be fair.

I believe you on the Yotei numbers because it does vary wildly like that even in the Insomniac leak, but Covid was also a point where it would make sense for people to shift to digital yet they didn't so I wouldn't really discount the data even if it is like four years old at this point. That is the prime example of a point in time where digital should have been selling way more than physical but it wasn't, it was all over the place.
>If the PS6 has a physical option, it'll be optional, pricey, and hard to find. Physical discs of games will also be hard to come by.
I sincerely doubt that just because having an extra SKU you have to buy optionally for the base system and stock will lead to sales that make it untenable to make physical copies at all as you can't count on anyone having it anymore. With the PS5 if I remember right disk PS5s are on par with Slims since they cost basically the same. B&Ms would also find it hard to justify making huge sections for the brands anymore which would hit their ability to advertise if they pulled something like that.

I'm of the opinion it's going to be an "All at once" sort of deal where they throw us into the deep end with the PS7. Shuhei, while not being CEO anymore, said that he personally doesn't think based on his knowledge and contacts within Sony that they're stopping physical yet because we're not at a point where everyone can reasonably store games or download them and patches yet, especially in the US.

So, with the Switch 2, it's selling and selling well and selling well in the market where it costs $450.

https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/switch-2-continues-to-break-us-launch-sales-records-selling-more-in-its-first-three-months-than-ps4/

I don't think a $600 next-generation Playstation 6 would sell that much worse than what is essentially a handheld PS4.5. Of course, software matters, but just generally, I think potential early adopters of the PS6 would be fine, even happy, with a $600 PS6.

People who want the new console but typically adopt later in a console lifecycle because of affordability issues would bitch and they are some of the people bitching about the Switch 2 price. But again, the Switch 2 is selling very well.

Now, that's been the case before in past cycles and I remember people bitching about the PS5 at launch as well. But things are somewhat different these days and social media amplifies it. The way I see it, the complaints seem bigger now because of two factors:

1) The video game internet communities are now more global, where as consoles are very regional products. So, people will jump on the hate bandwagon for fun cause they can't get the console anyways.

2) A lot of "gamers" no longer play games on consoles. They play on old, used, cheap smartphones, tablets, PCs and consoles. New consoles have become a product for wealthier, older consumers, specifically in America. This leaves a lot of poorer, younger consumers, who can't get a Switch 2 at $450, a lot of time to shitpost on social media.

>US households with a $100,000+ income now make up 43% of video game hardware sales, a rise from 36% just a few years ago.
>18 – 24-year-olds only accounted for 3% of video game hardware purchases in the year ending July 2025, which is down from 10% for the same period ending July 2022.

>How is Sony even going to compete with that?
Nintendo and Sony aren't really competitors. That argument Sony made before the Supreme Court for the Xbox trial is absolutely 100% true and it's kind of baffling the judge dismissed it since it shows they're not as in the weeds as we are.

Even if Sony is encroaching into their same market with the handheld they simply have significantly different libraries and appeals. Sony deals with the higher fidelity games while Nintendo doesn't, and Sony gets access to way more brands that Nintendo doesn't on the third-party front and vice-versa due to having better performance or brand pull for certain companies. It's got some intersecting but it's functionally not the same market so realistically it shouldn't be something they need to worry about as much, especially since the handheld side of things is more of a supplementary thing to the actual PS6.

Even though we know nothing about the cost of Amethyst and couldn't possible know how it would affect the price of the PS6, we do know it's not a technology that will be exclusive to the PS6.

https://youtu.be/1LCMzw-_dMw?si=l6Z6ihd9Q4Iictjc&t=494

In which case, it's part of a larger effort by AMD to expand their presence in the game development world, which means the cost of its development won't be only, or maybe even largely, on Playstation's shoulders.

If this was a case like the PS3 Cell, then it would be very expensive and the subsequent console would have to be priced high to avoid taking huge losses per unit. If Amethyst is an expensive technology and the PS6 is priced at $800, I think the console is doomed.
>>
>>723050732
>So, with the Switch 2, it's selling and selling well and selling well in the market where it costs $450.
I understand, I'm not saying it's not selling but more that something in that range was already considered by a lot of people to be fairly ridiculous and causing many people to hold out or be vocal about how it's bad. The PS5 Pro in particular was considered to be exceptionally awful price-wise and that still sold roughly in line with the PS4 Pro if I remember right. It's just that with the general public we're going into a recession, the AI bubble might pop, and a $600+ price point might be a straw that breaks the camel's back. I can see them using the handheld's price point as some comparison to ease people in

To try and get people into the Playstation ecosystem with a different form factor. This thing is basically meant to be a portable PS6, not really a Switch 2 competitor since it's only going to get some of the same multiplats but many different ones. Many Japanese and even western third-parties do not release games on the Playstation ecosystem that they do on Nintendo ones. Simple recent example is the Crayon Shin-Chan games that play like Boku no Natsuyasumi. The first game came out on PS4 but the sequel isn't on Playstation at all, only Switch.

Playstation also doesn't have stuff like Bakeru or Natsumon, but on the flip side Nintendo doesn't have stuff like Steelrising or Sable for example.

They did the same thing with the PS Portal and it worked since that thing sold gangbusters. There's clearly a market that wants something that plays their console games in a handheld form factor, but the games Sony and get are just way too different.

>>723051110
Yeah, that was my mistake, I thought Sony was the one that stated that not the FTC. I still think it's ridiculous they threw that argument out just because of the SeS though. I know they pointed to a person within the company stating the SeS was priced lower to try to pull the Switch market, but they went about the argument the wrong way since it's only competition in a very surface level sense of getting someone into their ecosystem.
>>
>>723051436
The whole case by the FTC was a sham and a joke. It was a waste of tax payer money. Their attorneys got up there and went, "BUT SONY" to the point you think they were Sony's attorneys.

Their arguments about Nintendo and PC were attempts to remove Nintendo and PC from the equation because the second you factor them in, their case falls apart. Just like their silly expert's model. Comparing console owners to bus riders who wear cheap shoes vs ultra rich PC users who ride on airplanes with expensive shoes/belts was hilarious.
>>
>>723051429
Nintendo is doing its own thing. It's lower end hybrid gaming even with the Switch 2's new power. We're actively seeing games that run mostly fine on things like the SeS struggling on the S2 so it's looking like it'll be in the same position this upcoming generation too, especially now that Sony and Microsoft are still having graphical dick measuring contests.

Sony and Microsoft are still competing with each other in the high end production and multiplat space it's just that Microsoft is on its way out and experimenting to try and see if anything sticks to keep them relevant.
Sony is still just being Sony, they're simply experimenting with this extra handheld to try and get people to maybe come to their side due to their library and ecosystem compared to Nintendo or people who want that form factor.
Microsoft's goal right now is trying to essentially get GamePass onto any platform that will allow it and pull you into their ecosystem however they can be it PC handhelds, the Microsoft Store, or this upcoming console. Even then their PC marketplace is different to the Xbox marketplace as it doesn't have access to a lot of what Xbox does. The only thing that connects the PC and Xbox market is GamePass, but even then the PC side is missing so much that there's a very clear difference between the two markets in said ecosystem.

Valve is competing with Microsoft in terms of the Xbox Rog Ally since it is a PC handheld that comes with W11 and is directly trying to establish itself as a storefront with the exact same games Valve offers, but overall Valve is competing more with the likes of GOG and EGS than anyone else when it comes to storefronts, and MSi, Lenovo, and ASUS when it comes to PC handhelds.

Man, I love when you guys want to actually seriously talk about stuff like this. It's so refreshing

You make it sound like it sold tens of millions when it sold a little less than 3 million worldwide so far by estimates from Circana. If they really make a "pre build pc" with a build in OS and can undercut building that pc yourself at a pretty steep discount, they can win.

>New people NOT coming into the console ecosystem is new.
Exactly as you say and people still parrot this "everyone went to PC" shit. Console gaming seems to be heading towards legacy stuff where if your relative/friend don't introduce you to console gaming then you probably won't get into it. This is also why people who say Xbox and Sony will die soon are wrong. Only Xbox will die and it is extremely likely most the users will go to other consoles instead of PC. This boost will give enough boost and growth for Playstation for a long time.
There is also this weird overestimation of Microsoft's plans
>Oh the next XboxPC will surely be competitive and relevant enough to gain market share because MS will do what they never did in the last decade from the software side and third parties will make banger hardware for cheap and everyone will get one to play the five or so old Xbox games you can't emulate properly next to their Steam games and there won't be any locked down fuckery MS will allow everything bla bla....
and underestimations of Sony's.
>Yeah PS is dead because the lag behind a few millions of PS4 despite the very expensive software and they are just the baseline for every game development and they are just more profitable than ever and the PSVR2 flopped which means they will surely keep going down forever bla bla...

The most likely scenario is Xbox stop becoming relevant as a platform and people will just play the few big IPs MS bought. Game Pass will die for sure and with it Microsofts leverage to get their shit everywhere. And if the console industry dies it is so far down the line it is not even funny. What MS envisioned with the Xbox One still didn't come to pass.

I think MS's path is ultimately third-party like Sega with GamePass on the side that they offer stuff through on PC. This is very obviously going to be their last system but I imagine they'll dabble in licensed PC handhelds to still push their ecosystem and otherwise stick to their own store that's on every Windows system by default.

The way I see it working out is
>Xbox Series End releases to middling sales and struggles to stay alive.
>People have to jump through hoops to really justify it due to the high costs and Microsoft decides to sunset production on it after a few years.
>Reveal that they're now shifting to a focus of game developer and PC will now have access to the Xbox side of games and that they're working on some translation layer to allow you to play anything from their previous systems on any PC* (*Windows) going forward using their overhauled Xbox app.
>GamePass will stay strong with them occasionally making stupid choices, but otherwise keeps up the same model they have currently so that they stay relevant and keep those massive subscriber numbers, but they never reach their 100 million target their CEO wants.
>GamePass is used to offer a way to play their new third-party games day one while Nintendo and Sony players have to buy the game.
That's roughly how I see it working out.

>GamePass will stay strong
The backbone of the Game Pass subscriber base is the console. With the rampant price hikes I can not see how will that be sustainable in the long term. Approximately half of the Xbox sales are Series S. That is 15 million or so users who wouldn't have bought a full priced console from MS and live off on cheap Game Pass. What Microsoft does right now guarantees they are halving their future userbase from the get go. And even the Series X users are not reliable as you may have noticed the "cancel Game Pass" stuff recently and every major streamer shitting on GP.
Only the ultimate tier worth in for GP and by raising the prices they are quickly reaching the point where the average user can buy multiple games they want to play instead of a random assortment of shit they don't want to. Any and all argument besides Game Pass can be easily refuted by asking how many subs are out there WITHOUT the Xbox Gold multiplayer userbase they fold into it. There is no answer because the most likely reason for no numbers is because it is shrinking. Just like how MS doesn't report console sales they stopped reporting GP numbers as soon as it stopped growing. All "growth" comes from the hikes while they lose subs rapidly. There is no other reason why would they raise the prices by 50-100% (depending on the country) overnight. They want to survive the next few quarters. Now every GP sub pays for at least another lost subscriber.

Fair points, my thought process stems more from the fact that while the console space would start diminishing their push would come more from the licensing deals they make for new handheld PCs, bundling GamePass with new laptop or PC purchases, pushing their new games as day ones if you're a subscriber on PC, etc. I can see it dropping to like maybe 20-25 million but I don't think the drop will be so harsh to halve it.

We will see some data in the next few quarterly reports (if the only number they provide is missing or negative then it will crash soon) otherwise it will take a few years because many people either just downgrade or let their stacked years run out.
I don't really understand why would a Game Pass bundle with PC hardware get new subs when it is already $30 a month. That is something even the average normie notices. The social media space in general grows hostile against Game Pass and Xbox, that is not a long term strategy. Everything points to the situation is being so bad the leadership just want to survive the next quarter. According to reputable leaks MS will gut Xbox in Q1 2026 again and nobody wants to be on the wrong side of the axe.

Oh, I didn't check their plans since I thought i read somewhere they backed down on the price hike. I don't think it's going to ever increase past the 30 million they apparently have, but I also don't think it's going to have such an enormous loss either just because they're going to try to transition those people or get them invested somehow in the ecosystem through other means like day one Xbox-published games for example.

There isn't going to be a next-gen Xbox console, you stupid slut. Alright, now that is out of the way I just want to say that a PS6 is the only realistic next-gen console to me. I game on an XSX and I have zero hope for Xbox's console future. I seriously doubt people are going to purchase a console that costs $800-$1,000+ It doesn't matter how powerful it is, even if it makes claims like "Oh, this rivals a 2024-2025 top of the line PC!" or something, even then people won't spend that much on a console. The PS5 Pro is basically $800, and only geniune Sony fanboys and rich people bought that, and when it was announced it got massive negative feedback. If ANYTHING almost every review shown comparing a PS5 to a PS5 Pro, the PS5 Pro has always had MORE issues and looked WORSE. PSSR wasn't ready to launch, and it usually makes games look worse. It feels like any next-gen console will make use of A.I generation. PSSR is literally just a patented Sony A.I tech. I imagine Microsoft/Xbox will eventually make their own, or implement that into a new console, if they even make one.

The PS5 Pro seems like it's a test bed for PSSR for the PS6 and anyone who bought the thing basically got fleeced since the benefits are basically nonexistent to the overwhelming majority of people, you have to pay basically $100 on top of it to get the disk reader and stand if you want it horizontal, and like you said visually the games tend to be so much worse.

With the PS4 Pro it was a direct upgrade but with the PS5 Pro you basically wasted $700 when the disk PS5 is $500 and Quality modes are typically a stable 30 anyway. The stable 60 Quality modes that look worse than the base system are not worth it.

The worst generation of all time. And it kind of is cruel just how fate can really be if you think about it. Because these 2 guys are actually pretty powerful, for a console. The PS4 And Xbox 1 were DOA the day they arrived, those were the weakest consoles ever. Such a shame the power and the innovation behind these 2 consoles is wasted on a horrifically bad generation of games. I have a feeling, the same will happen next generation. Powerful hardware, dogshit games.

Only if you're a Snoy or Xbot, they've been shit since the 7th gen. I'm glad Nintendo and PC are back.

For how incompetent and mismanaged Xbox is I have a feeling that one of the execs instinctively knows that going all in on cloud gaming is a recipe for failure, it has been tried countless times dating back to 2010 with OnLive and never took off because video games are fundamentally incompatible with cloud streaming. Furthermore having a proper presence in the market is paramount because otherwise you're just the Stadia, nobody will want to pay, buy and invest time in your pozzed meme service where you own nothing and where you can and will get money stolen. It's crazy to me that a corporation like Microsoft is willing to abandon the privilege of its own walled garden where they control both hardware and software and get a cut out of everything in favor of being just another publisher giving a cut to everyone else.

>It's crazy to me that a corporation like Microsoft is willing to abandon the privilege of its own walled garden where they control both hardware and software and get a cut out of everything in favor of being just another publisher giving a cut to everyone else.
They can see the writing on the wall. The amount of money they have to spend into R&D for the system, then marketing, and watch it guaranteed to be the third wheel now because of the situation they've been put into likely outweighs just packing it all up. It's not like they're packing up fully, they still have their PC storefront due to GamePass and they'll likely pivot into making PC able to access the Xbox storefront and games as well in the future if their "This is an Xbox" campaign wants to actually be taken to its logical conclusion. They've also turned Xbox subscriptions into the GamePass subscriptions as a whole so all those subscribers have been functionally migrated to that system that also works on PC.

There's just no point in prolonging this further. The Series systems are what, 33 million systems to PS5's 80 million, most of those sales are from the cheap SeS and not the SeX, they are phasing out physical copies, many Japanese devs pretty much refuse to do physical releases on Xbox let alone port any games to it, all their exclusives are day one ported off giving no reason to buy the system for exclusives, going forward PS5/6 and Switch 2 will likely get physicals of their games meaning you will get shafted if you go Xbox and like physical copies losing yet another incentive for the new system, and so on.

They have no real appeal anymore. They are essentially a GamePass machine whose games are all either better on PS5 because SeX for some reason is a coin flip if multiplats are optimized better than on PS5 despite being stronger, or are going to be ported to Playstation anyway.

>>723062004
Nintendo was never gone, you just refused to buy handhelds until they came with a hdmi out gimimck.
>>
>>723061831
I don't even see a point in another next generation. At launch both the PS5 and Xbox were serviceable and affordable multiplat machines, but that value has been eroded due to price hikes. What's going to be the point of a $1000 PS6 over a PC? And besides, all of those games will still be coming out on PS5 for years anyway.
>>
>>723063825
I came back with the 3DS since they stopped putting so much focus on the dual screens gimmick.
>>
>>722987760
this will be an overpriced flop

>At launch both the PS5 and Xbox were serviceable and affordable multiplat machines
Did you forget that both the PS5 and XSX launched during the height of the pandemic/lockdowns? You couldn't get both consoles for under 1000 bucks. It was only in 2022 when you could get these consoles for close to the MSRP. That was only 3 years ago.
>>
>>723064220
Some people were able to get past the scalpers. I got my PS5 mid 2021 at retail price. I wouldn't say it'd be worth it at scalper prices.
>>
The whole oh its powerful doesn't matter. Series x is more powerful than ps5 and it doesn't mean shit, its still worse on all fronts, because its attached to cancerous monster named Microsoft. Not to mention that the exclusives scene is pretty much gone, so no real point in going for 1.5x of the competition
>>
>>723064419
Question: why are you fucking retarded? If you actually read what is being written, you'll understand that they need that amount of power to properly drive their rumored hybrid PC/console device. That would supposedly be the main selling point, not just the power.
>>
>>723052664
>perfect dark
About that, anon...
>>
>>723002328
Wow i didn’t know that, I just built a pc early this year after over a decade of laptops, prices of parts have become absurd though GPUs especially
>>
>>723064419
The PS5 vs Series X is a curious case.

Series X's Gpu is as big as the PS5 Pro's Gpu but the clock runs at half the speed. The Base PS5's Gpu is only half the size of the Series X but the clock runs at twice the speed.

If there is anything this proves is that:
higher clockspeed > higher core count
Faster Cpu with less cores > Slower Cpu with more cores
Faster Gpu with less cus > Slower Gpu with more cus

Higher clockspeed yields higher performance than anything else.

I always thought videogames would replace Hollywood.

That's still the case even now. The influx of women into gaming speaks more to the dire state of the movie industry more then anything.

All escapism is inherently loser coded. I feel like the population is slowly coming to terms with that.
>>
>>723066090
>I always thought videogames would replace Hollywood.
Replace it how? You mean being more profitable than Hollywood? That happened a long time ago
>>
>>723066170
Videogames will replace movies. I doubt it will even be called videogames by then due to the stigma.

Movie games are sort of a prototype for what's to come.
>>
>>723066402
Jesus, that's fucking dystopian even thinking about it. Video games are fucking trash compared to movies. It has been over 4 decades, and video games are way behind movies when it was like 40 years old in the 50s or something
>>
>>723066170
I predict the next Generation will be the last "videogame" generation.

The PS6 will have 2000s level CGI in real time. With some movie games getting close to Cameron's Avatar levels of fidelity. (But not quite)

After that movie games will be streamable do to the fact that they won't require precise input. The graphic fidelity by then will be good enough for photorealistic content. Ai will speed up that process. At this point you'll see normies flooding into this new medium.
>>
>>723066818
2000s level CGI isn't path tracing, so by that logic this won't be the last videogame generation.
>>
>>723059641
PSSR is a layer ran on the top and devs can opt not to use it, that's why is not as effective as FSR4 or DLSS4, in fact it actually runs a bit too well for what it is but it has problems with UE5's Lumen which causes the flickering. For PS6 PSSR will be baked in the hardware and it'll be the default across all games just like Ray tracing will be too.
>>
>>723066976
While previously too slow, path tracing now allows for realistic lighting effects that were previously unattainable, with early examples including the 2006 film Monster House.
>>
>>722987760
I might buy one and connect it to a TV if it supports windows, steam, emulators and costs under $1000. otherwise I see no value in getting this instead of a ps6.
>>
>>723067115
Early example but that was the exception not the rule, Avatar wasn't path traced and Pixar didn't do path tracing until 2013. It's kind of funny people really don't get how weak this coming hardware is, with the new changes from AMD what they are really doing is moving their architecture to something more like Nvidia, with fully dedicated RT and AI as well as data stream compression.
Here's a question, do you think that the PS6 or Xbox Magnus will be as powerful as an RTX 5090? Here's an answer, no, not even remotely, it won't even be anywhere near a match for an RTX 4090, which has more than double the SMs (CU's), but considering how far behind AMD are their RT and Tensor core equivalents may only be as effective as an RTX 40 series GPU, even the RTX 4090 can't do say Alan Wake 2 4k path traced even with DLSS turned on, and that game still has a lot of jumps to hitting full CGI quality.
This won't be the last console generation, although with console level optimization a lot of Sony published games will look like CGI, but then again Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart was already just on the cusp of it.

>The worst generation of all time.
Worst my ass. This is the first generation since the Super Nintendo that we got 60fps games across the board. Performance wise has been the best, and combined with backwards compatibility and games running even better on the new hardware, console gaming has never been better than it is right now.

You can buy used PS4 games on Ebay for pennies and play them at their best on PS5. You can have a sizable library of games for very little money and people should enjoy it because this is probably gonna be the last time something like this will be possible once physical is dead.
>>
>>723066090
Hollywood is pretty much dead. All movies are flopping regardless of quality. Social media has completely ruined the dopamine receptors of people and nobody can sit down even for an hour and pay attention to a movie or anything really. People subscribe to Netflix and is just use it as background noise. Nobody watches anything anymore.
>>
>>723066818
truth is that gaming is dying. It's making more money because everything is more expensive but less people are actually playing. It's fewer people but spending more money. Everyone only just play Roblox and Fortnite.
>>
>>723065809
You're overthinking it, XSX underperforms because DX12 is a shit API.

bro, its dead... cosco and a bunch of other stores stopped selling the xbox and games, shartmart doesnt even have many shitbox games in their shelves and bestbuy will be shit-canning the xbox. By the way you can get a chink mini-pc with an amd 780m graphics card, 8 core 16 thread 32gb ram for $500 and it will run anything like a champ.

why the fuck would anyone bother with an overpriced shitbox anyways?
>>
>>723067965
Its difficult to comprehend what the future will be like. But one thing we can always predict is convenience and affordability.

Technology like AI will make things a lot quicker and a lot cheaper just like CGI did with real filming locations, explosions, and film props.

I doubt movie games will be longer then 3 hours unless it's episodic.
>>
I'd rather buy a 2000€ gpu (already did too) than pay 800€ for a locked down snoybox
>>
>>723069146
The IGP is terrible for running modern games, but you can get these miniPCs with laptop GPUs in them, and they're pretty decent.
>>

>nearly 1500 burgercoins for what amounts to a locked down and cucked PC
