The changes are mostly in humor: Estelle has a catchphrase she says repeatedly in Japanese and in the OG translated games she says shit like making people talk to broken teeth or hitting them with her big stick. And they also added a lovely little detail in that open chests have messages completely absent in the JP release. This new translation works but is inconsistent. For example, a character starts calling one of the MCs "Mr." out of nowhere and it's this weird inbetween of wanting to go full weeb and include things like -san, -kun, -chan, etc and translating that into English. And it stands out as it is the ONLY game that does that. Then there are obvious signs of un revised literal MTLslop. The humor falls flat most of the time, but the game is still fun and the translation works. It is just incongruent with later works.But, it is worth noting that the most recent arc, Daybreak, has instances of humor being shoved in just because, especially in instances where characters in Japanese are 100% serious and not trying to be humourous.

I don't know if this is a spoiler or not, but I think Estelle's father is one of the worst characters in the series.He's kind of like that badass guy that everyone respects and fears, including the badass villains who have moves that seem completely impossible to deal with, but at the same time, he does absolutely NOTHING in the first two games of the series, except show up to save the protagonists in the cutscenes after the protagonists have already done all the work fighting.He's supposedly one of the most powerful guys in the world, but you never see him do anything useful when you really need it and you're completely screwed.

I think it only really got this reputation because of the character cameos because the actual worldbuilding isn't really any more in depth than the average JRPG, there's just more of it. But more =/= depth especially in this case. I've come to terms with it over the years but it does feel like wasted potential and people have way oversold it.The gameplay is sorta fun but it's utterly brainless and Falcom just entirely refuse to do even the most rudimentary balancing pass on it so every game just ends up broken as shit filled with mechanics that all feel undercooked.
