The game is pretty good, the overworld also looks pretty good with this artstyle from a distance, but the outlines look like shit and once you zoom in it falls apart. More annoyingly, the artstyle is still that overdone WoW-cander style.

You want to go with 3D models at all costs? Fine, but why not just go with HoMM3's artstyle? Or HoMM2's, whatever just not the 5+ shit.

Also why did we get 3D townscreens again but this time we can't even move the camera? Townscreens in 5 were fully 3D, looked a lot better than these, and you could move the camera. Now we get all the drawbacks of 3D with none of the upsides.

Both 3 and 4 have variety in mood and genre and most of the soundtrack stands up whether the songs are supposed to be part of the background (overworld songs) or the foreground (battle and town themes).

A spell that lets you grab units from external dwelling far away. A spell that let's you exchange units/artefacts with another hero far away. There's a cast that just adds movement points to your hero. And all of that is on top of the usual DD and Town Portal stuff. And don't forget that Fly spell reduces movement cost. There are way too many movement/army manipulation spells. You can be anywhere any time you want.

Alright lads, just won my first game after a couple of failed attempts. I think I might have turned the difficulty up to 125% instead of 100% by mistake before, otherwise I can't explain why this run was SO MUCH easier. Some more thoughts on the game:

>UI definitely needs a lot more work. We're talking here about ownership flags being hidden behind foliage, capturing a town but the flag randomly turning into your opponent's color etc.
>I LOVE the fact that the game's philosophy is to give everyone a bunch of cool OP shit and let them fight with their toys. So many games end up focusing on muh balance, sucking out the fun of the game
>There should be more ways to get alchemical dust. The fastest way to get it now is by disenchanting items, but if you get bad RNG and don't find neutral buildings that drop them you'll be falling behind quite fast. Potentially they should tune down the upgrade dust value requirements, I was 3 months in, fully owned 80% of the map and only by then was I able to actually fully upgrade one of my town's buildings

Combat AI is better.
Global AI is still terrible, and it will never match humans. It's extremely hard to program AI that can do all the chaining, army transfers, etc. So AI will always lag behind in resources and army.

And done with my first 200% apocalyptic difficulty game.
Different from 150% creeping is definitely harder, even normal sawmill had rather large stacks so I needed to level up a bit with pickups and get a few more heroes to get more units before I could comfortably take things on.
Which reminds me how the Twilight spell which shut downs ranged units is so good and Dungeon's Clown hero gets it at level 1. Ridiculous how OP dungeon is in this game but I digress.

enemy AI this time around was definitely more aggressive, although with this map there are A LOT of creature dwellings and I mean you can get tier 6 and tier 7 units from like 4 dwellings(2 for each respectively) in your first area far faster than building up your city. That contributed a lot to snowballing my skelly stack and stopping AI in time from snowballing. In this map if you don't take the middle area fast enough its basically over since it contains like 4 cities.

This is a bug, and I had another bug(Probably)where I couldn't affect enemy armies with negative effects. I have no idea if this is a skill or something but its like they all had the same protection the angel had from negative effects NONE of my spells worked other than berserk.
Thanks to that I had to give up on casting nightshade magic almost entirely which is ridiculous. Again though it worked normally on creeps until I met the enemy heroes so idk what's going on.

It's too complicated for me. Too many numbers and variables attached to it. I don't quite know how to get good at them either. The main chore of HoMM series is logistic, you need more heroes to do a lot of stuff - you need someone who would hire and deliver fresh units, you need a scout to explore the area where your main army would go, you need someone who would just run around d the map and gather resources. And your enemies would do the same, so at some point your areas would be flooded with low-level heroes with small armies, but who'll be robbing your resources and took yours mines and that's the real pain in the ass to deal with such cockroaches. Every player can play at the same time while they're active.
Internally the map is split into smaller parts. As long as two players haven't setp within the same part (meaning they won't make conflicting actions) the turns are simultaneous. The moment a second player steps on a part explored by another hero, the turns are rolled back and the setting changes to traditional turn based to preserve the integrity of the game.

Just add those features like HoMM 4 and 5 had. Each player plays the game "separately", limited by a turn timer. When one player sees another, reaches a certain date or enters a specific part of the map the simturns end and the game plays normally. Sometimes the game needs to roll back a turn when that happens.
This was all done to expedite multiplayer, a 1v1 on a regular map like menus cross for example can take like 4-5 hours even WITH sum turns, imagine if you had to wait for another person to complete theirs every time.

HoMM3 has this nice storybook look to it but it looks extremely dated
I don't have an issue with the new game's looks other than the UI being obtuse, and that's primarily because it's a PC UI. If it was a "mobile UI" it would have tons of sub-windows tucked away that pop out at a tap. The PC UI just needs tooltips and hotkeys and it'll be fine

Thanks guys, I'll play 6, through MM8 gog version with merge patch for now, it just werks. Restarted a couple of times, read the manual, figured skills and characters, should be smooth sailing for now.
There are so many fucking monsters, no wonder in Heroes you get to command whole armies.
Portraits are my fav part so far.
