I keep getting filtered a half hour in. What should I be doing when I start so I don't get fucked later?
>>723034893Uninstalling the woke slop then pirating the OST
>>723034893It's another clone of the singular pirate game whose design has been iterated since the 90s in both sea sea and space sea so apply the same strategy. Ignore everything and mindlessly haul cheap cargo from your home port to the port that's buying high until you have enough money to uninstall the game because the sheer boredom and menial busywork burned you out of every whimsy and curiosity.
>>723034893Unironically, adjust the engine values in the .ini to what you feel is a good compromise between fun and fair. The big problem is the game is very SLOW, yet engines are increasingly inefficient as they scale in speed, making them not at all worth the price of admission and the upkeep required. From there, don't worry about getting fucked. Just follow the stories as best you can, do what you think is right. If you cut a story short or get an outcome you dislike, you can do it again on another Captain. Good things to work towards are buying a home and getting a wife back in London, that way if you die or choose to retire you can begin a new game with a head start.
>>723034893Don't max out your crew capacity. More crew you have, the more food you eat. Best to keep it barely over half, so at small ships with 10 crew cap, you should hold like 6 or 7. Adjust for bigger boats.Try to stay close to the shore, islands or buoys, as being in their relative safety lessens the terror build up.Speaking of, keep your eye on the terror buildup. When it's green and goes down, you can turn off your light and save a bit of fuel while floating by safety of shores.Get as many port reports as you can in single run. Don't go to one port and head back to London straight away. Reports give you that precious money and free fuel.Blind Bruiser is your friend. Don't piss him off. When you eventually die or retire, NEVER take correspondent as legacy option for a serious run. That gimps you horribly by denying you XP and level ups. Do it maybe once for that one Steam achievement or if you are intentionally dying for the death achievements.
>>723034893Ship stone to the sphinxs until you can't anymore, then ship coffee to the surface until you can't.Get a better ship asap.If you die, don't pick the map for your new captain.
>>723034893the game is torture without mods to reduce fuel&supply consunption rate and to raise base ship speed
>>723035043Oh, was interested in this game but not if it's woke. What's the woke content?
>>723036763Alarming Scholar in London is so androgynous that text keeps referring to to them as "he (she?)" or "she (he?)" like if your captain is constantly confused and the gender is never specified. You can start a family in London for some bonuses and you can romance either "A Likely Lass" or "A Dapper Chap" regardless of your own unspecified gender. And eventually you can either sire a child, adopt a child or birth a child, depending on your dialogue choises. Those are just the two major instances that pop to my mind, but I'm sure the other anon will have a mile long list of nitpicks that I've brushed aside.
You can very easily make a profit off of just hunting sea monsters, and repeatedly farming the one pirate in the game (catch and release). Ship weight and engine power consume extra fuel, and more crew consume more supplies. You can swap engines at any port, which means you can bring fuel consumption way down, at the cost of more supplies/sanity.
>>723037662>but I'm sure the other anon will have a mile long list of nitpicks that I've brushed aside.Where do all these lefty tranons come from?
>>723038095So what other wokeness is there in the game? Go on. Enlighten us.
>>723038206Answer my question first
>>723038263Your mom.Now give us the list.
>wanna play the sequel because its no longer a chore to play>its written by the people who wrote the orgy story not the original writer as they fired him due to pettyness
>>723038341Sorry, too busy actually playing games, unlike lefty tourists.
>>723038415Ehh, Skies feels worse in lot of ways. The combat with dodges feels casual. The menus are fuckhuge like if it was designed to be played on fucking phones.Trading is gimped by the contract shit. No longer can you do emergency sales on any port to buy emergency fuel and such. You can sell only in the major central hubs.
>>723038415>original writer goes on to create shitty card games and a disco elysium rip offThere's no winning in this world
>>723038750found the failbetter employee.both book of hours and cultist sim are kino games.heck, cultist sim even won its place in best games of all time list.
TWO female engineers. Pretty bad news, but it's counterbalanced by the sentient chimpanzee kingdom that steals human souls to imitate their personality.
>>723039056>complains about sunless sea being a chore to play>likes CS and BoHYou make no sense
>>723034893Who thought it was an idea to make a roguelike with planescape torment tier dense paragraphs. This game is also dante must die mode for esl peasants like myself.
>>723039056I've at least heard of Cultist Sim and I know it's a very writing heavy game so it makes sense than a writer made it. It must have been successful enough or at least talked about enough if I'm vaguely aware of it.
>>723039079That's it?
>>723034893Keep crew at 75% capacity to avoid chewing through rations too quickly.Exploit the early game ports before they become inaccessible (Mutton Island, Hunters Keep, Salt Lions if they're close)Trading is extremely hard to make money off of in the early game so just try and collect as many port reports as you can every outing so you can subsidise your fuel.Try and swing by Mt Palmerston if you're going north for cheap 9e fuel and 22e rations. If you're going south then hit up Iron Republic for 8e fuel and Port Carnelian for 18e rations.Depending on if you're going north or south you only want to buy as much rations and fuel in London as it would take to reach these cheaper ports.Try and aim for a zubmarine as you can find a ton of free shit lying on the zee floor and underwater ports often have quite cheap fuel and thier reports pay around double on average. Also it let's all future captains start with a zubmarine going forward.Once you get a ship with a foreward cannon slot you can double your firepower and start effectively hunting zee monsters for free rations and expensive trade goods.
>>723034893The first thing you need to do to play Sunless Sea is get CheatEngine and hook it into the game and set the game speed to at least double. After that try and find the mangrove college quickly for an easy batch of supplies on every trip.>>723038415>>723038680The gameplay generally feels better but the writing is such utter shit in Skies that there's no reason to bother with it since the writing was the main draw of Seas to begin with.
I wish that engines were more of a straight upgrade.
>>723034893Maybe's Rival is best girl.
>>723034893>>723040523The further away from London you go the more dangerous the wildlife becomes but the more money port reports are worth (The first visit to the Empire of Hands is a fat 300e).The alarming scholar in London will buy information items. And completing island questlines will almost always reward you with Searing Enigmas which are extremely valuable.Sailing along coastlines with your light on will prevent your crew from gaining stress, but switching your light off halves your fuel use. If there are light buoys near coastline (such as in London harbour) you can switch off your light to save fuel and your terror gain gauge will still be green.London is by far the best place to lose stress (even more so if you have a family), but there are a couple of other decent spots for relaxing. The docks at Frostfound, Shepherd islands, Demeaux island and Mangrove College have free options for reducing terror, and there are even more like Anthe, Abbey Rock and the Chelonate that you can use if you have the right items or stats.
>>723035043AHHHHH AHHHHHH AHHHHHHHTHank you undersea mongols
>>723034893Explore for new ports and keep farming port reports for the admiralty(after you turn in the reports in London, you can sail out and get new ones from the same ports). Make sure to spam the zee-bat, it's free to use and spots some islands for you. If something aggroes on you, use turbo("full power to the engines") and run away. There are better strategies too, but these things are enough to keep you alive.
I tried to include elements of this game in mine while making it
>>723043319What's your game like?
>>723043352FTLish but open map
>>723043319>>723043393Link?
>>723043546https://pricklypeargames.itch.io/wodopom
>>723036763There's lots of unnecessary faggy stuff and an odd recurring thing where multiple characters keep being referred to as androgynous. It's very distracting in a game that's set in a (somewhat) Victorian setting. Overall I'd say it's not too bad, but you get the occasional thing that's reminiscent of old tumblr. The main writer went on to make his own studio that released cultist sim and book of hours. I've only played cultist sim but it has basically none of the gay shit you get in sunless sea, so I'm guessing it wasn't his idea. Overall I'd say both sunless sea and cultist sim and worth playing. They have very simple gameplay loops and have some degree of RNG so I can imagine a lot of people disliking them.
>>723043586Wow, by FTLish you meant actually just FTL huh?I mean it's better than anything I can do for sure but you should make your game at least look different than the inspiration so it doesn't immediately look like a rip off.
>>723043739Maybe I'm too close to it because I see all kinds of differences, but you're right. Ultimately I don't think it's a problem, after all the FTL design was award winning.
>>723034893Beeline for quests. Exploring distant ports is also worthwhile since you get free fuel when you get back to London from delivering port reports. If you have the submarine DLC, doing its initial unlock quest is very worthwhile since it unlocks the submarine upgrade for all future playthroughs, and having a submarine unlocks fuckton more ports for more quests and port reports. It also makes exploration comfier since some underwater ports sell fuel and supplies at better rates than the usual late game ports with fickity fuckity prices. There's a few foolproof methods of making mad dosh, but the vast majority of time trading isn't worth it (aside from selling loot from quests and events). You should also get the first apartment upgrade ASAP, find a lover in port and get an heir, then write a will in order to be able to pass on your money to next attempt. You can't pass on your ship or upgrades (an issue which the sequel remedies), and most early game ships are shitty overpriced sidegrades anyways since the most important upgrade is cargo space, so it's best to hold onto your money and pick the money NG+ bonus while having a will so you can give 100% of your money to the next captain.
>>723034893>avoid combat for a while>do port reports as it's money and free fuel>learn prices and sell for a profit in ports you know you're going to>early on find the salt lions and deliver stone>polythyreme has a mission where you can ship clay men to london which is good if you're going by on the way backMain beginner things I'd recommend. My main money making route was to buy wine in London, sell it in Port Carnelian, buy coffee in Port Carnelian, then go to Irem and trade the coffee for cloth which I'd sell in London. Map is somewhat randomized each game so certain routes become more or less profitable based on that. As others have said it's very profitable to sell coffee on the surface. I think it requires a bigger ship than the starter though, might not have enough hold space.
>>723043831It's your game man so do whatever you want, just the first thought that came to mind looking at was that it was an FTL clone. To be fair people were talking about some other FTL clone that tried to be Warhammer 40K too, and that one looked even more like a copy than yours and it's being sold and they haven't been sued.
>>723034893Farm port reports, find a good loop that gets you a lot of them and turn them all in. Keep your crew as small as is safe. There are some easy money ports that provide a set amount, salt lions being the most accessible. Explore the island's stories as you go, trying to remember that stuff you need and hang onto it. Do the same with your officer's quests. Get the first ship that comes with two forward facing weapon slots ASAP. Try to spec into a couple of skills when you level up, you'll never have enough points to become a jack-of-all-trades. If someone tells you to trade wine for a 3 gold profit until you have enough for the cargo ship, ignore them. They are a clown.
>>723043586why would I play this when I could just play ftl?
On a barely-related note, Failbetter's newsletter is fantastic if you like random bullshit. They find all sorts of stuff and mail everyone on their lists about it every month or so.Just checked the one from last month and found a sick-ass word search. Gotten a fair few game recs from them too. Even another newsletter literally just titled "Weird Fucking Games."
>>723044374there's an open world mode, which is pretty fun.
>>723034893The game makes me unreasonably angry every time I think of it because it could've been a really fun little Sid Meier's Pirates!-like sandbox with runs taking like an hour but you learn stuff and realize different directions you can take it and it'd be great. Instead you get the game you get and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAThey improved it a little bit with spacetrain but Jesus Christ Sunless Sea chaps my ass so fucking much because it could've been so good
>>723034893Edit the save file to give yourself echoes, it's just a text file>>723035043Wolf docks or whatever the main theme's name is incredible but the rest is entirely forgettable
>>723043586What are these alien species? It looks just like FTL but no one looks human.
>>723044748I took characters from all my other games and some designed by my friends, so there's 100 playable races with different stuff about them.
>>723034893Don't be a pussy and explore as much as you can. Eventually your stats will get high enough for you not to die so quicklyThe more ports you find the further you will make it into the game. alsoThe Cutter is the most underrated ship in the game. For a humble cost of -10 to your max inventory, you get a ship that weighs less, has increased speed and only needs 3 crew to perform, essentially halving fuel and food consumption (only needing 2 food: 10 fuel for most trips you make) WE ARE CLAY reduces this one btwAnd you can still haul sphinx stones and smuggle sunlight.Save hundreds of echoes just by being more efficient...
>>723044925>100 playable races with different stuff about themDamn! Are they all the same though or do they have gameplay differences?
>>723043586>>723043831No one is going to look at your shitty FTL knockoff and think "I'm going to play this instead of FTL" especially when FTL has a bunch of mods. If you're going to make a blatant clone you need it to have higher production values and if you're going to make something mechanically distinct then it needs to look visually distinct as well.
>>723045179The Cutter burns 2 hunger per tick even with a full 5 crew. It's safer that way too, since story options in ports can kill your crew.
Sunless striveTilt screen to move a man and a ship. Shake to attack. Press part of the screen to shoot gun blade full auto in that direction, still able to move, strafing. Tap for a single two shot down the sides of gun blade that are worth 100 shots. Or one swipe (slash).Shake screen harder for harder (melee (gunblade) attack.Land all art, non repedative. 2D. Drawn and reduced to pixelated by artists ai or not. Made to suit. More as the game is out. It longer. No ending yet except Man or Woman played as slaves (saves) the other. Endgame going on is their adventure together. Public, people decide, deliver moments of their own or imagined, give them a good life they can play as, all people giving little pure parts making it heaven.
>>723034893Don't be too ambitious early one.Only draw small circles and drive back to London to get fuel and echoes. If you want a more specific hit, Frostfound is a good place early on where you can camp and reduce your terror.
>>723045327I'd say there's some that have more significant changes, like gimmicks even, but most of them are balanced in some way around the stats and abilities. There's a ton of stats, so making 100 things that all handle different isn't too much of a challenge.
>>723034893It doesn't get any better. Turn off roguelike mode and allow yourself to save anytime you want.Frankly, play anything else. The writing isn't worth it.
>>723046908>The writing isn't worth it.Holy garbage taste
>>723037662oh nooo im going insane

>>723047007Even if the game had godlike perfect writing, it wouldn't be worth the dogshit sailing.
>>723034893There's a lot of run variations you could do but the easiest one you can probably do for exploration wise is>starting area buy food/fuel/cargo for north compound>take passengers>go to island for dialogue/lore/quest stuff>patth up>path right and then down towards Lion statue for marble>send marble back portThe game clues you in very often on what you can do to get lucrative dealings but a lot of the endings and quests border into schizo shit anyway, just explore as much of the map as you can and pay attention to dialogue. The sequel is much better mechanically though a step down in RPG mechanics and world design I think
>>723044705Space Train missed a lot of what made the original rather good though sadly. It's rather mixed around
>>723045179>cutterWith how many crew killing mechanics are in this game that's risky
>>723046579Tap shots are instantaneous hits to whatever they're tapped on.Held shots are slower projectiles but a lot of them in rapid succession virtually a stream. They stun.No reload. Always ready. Press as many or hold as long as you want. But being careful always shooting might accidently hit someone that isn't enemy, who'd be interesting to talk to and give you a story to go along to conclusion, or ask you help them with what you have already. It a little harder afterwards that hones you so hardship is less exponential. More linear.Meet friends you deposit in others and see again. Serve an expectation of yourself, save the world, save a moment from only being memory.Gameplay in combat of hold off, take out and hold your ground when surrounded. Close not the end if you shake and struggle hard enough.Slashes (shaking phone/controller) silent.Full auto loud as seen locally on screen.Single shots echo for ages.Shake screen harder to ensure a slash is final.Sometimes better to stun enemies than kill them too. Work your way to the leader who might be made on your side. Gaining all they command as allies.Need a world saved, you elsewhere in effect. And what you can't do. Keeping people alive and choosing to right to.Balance your own survival with saving the bad guys and your lover who they bad might try to win or harm. Need to have any that live be good to her knowing by that they serve good that saves themselves.
>>723034893Find the Wistful Deviless and bone her.
>>723048417Maybe the other way around with single shots and full auto.Or a mode you can change by tilting screen horizontal or vertical. (Change which does what in settings).Eg: Fire full auto, don't see projectiles except where they hit. Move finger in a circle around character and everything around stunned. Hit more stunned longer though.Tilt screen so you can see more of where you want to go.Sometimes priority is stunning. Sometimes overwhelmed stopping everything around as fast as possible is needed to survive.Tap on your character to talk, saying if alone something that might help, or their personality, their state currently as a hero. How they are. Hear/read from how they speak how much of them is them, how much is against them. Too much might need health. Held on them making the world easier. They more empowered. Pitiful sometimes. Pain, impairment. Crawling on the ground, forgetting essentials, caring too much to make decisions in case they are wrong and go on bad eternally getting worse without them. Get a connection to a lover or the other sex, or friends in general, (the) thankful, assurance their try has produced result.
