(You) can play shmups.
>>
But you won't enjoy it
>>
>Parodius Forever with Me
Doubt it, this game is pretty fucking long for shmup standards.
>>
>>723052645
Long but gives you a shitton of lives
Surprisingly hard for how many extends it gives you but still definitely in the realm of "doable", it took me about 10 hours.
>>

>>
>>723052578
Don't listen to him. I spent 60 hours in Mushihimesama original and still can't 1cc it yet. I picked it as my first shmup under the assumption it would be easy to clear the game but there's so much to commit to memory and practice. Beating NG2 on Master was easier than this.
>>
>>723055212
No, I purposefully excluded Ketsui and DoDonPachi DaiOuJou, some of the best shmups, because they're too hard.
>>
>>723052578
I don't really get what's the point of sticking with easier clears.
No, I don't want everyone to beat Inbachi in SDOJ, but man the fuck up and don't filter out most of the genre just because you can't 1cc within a day or two.
>>
>>723055434
There's still way more games than anyone's gonna play. This could have been a 3x3 chart

You should just make it "shmups on steam that aren't bad" and pick 5. People who have no idea what they're doing don't want options they want to pick a universal "baby's first ___" game. Do you rec someone who's never watched anime before like 20 different shows? No, you sit them down with ghibli and cowboy bebop

Any chance these games make it to Steam? :(
>>
>>723063356
Probably not but you can emulate them. DOJ and Garegga work fine but Ketsui crashes on game over. Hopefully that gets fixed at some point. Also the only pkgs I've been able to find online for Ketsui and Garegga were the Japanese and Korean versions respectively, even though they have English versions.

The M2 ports that are already on Steam because the publishers forced them to: Darius Cozmic Collection, G-Darius HD, and Gradius Origins.

Batsugun Special Version. You can 1cc it, but understand it won't be in one try. These games are designed to have longevity. But Batsugun Special is easy enough that as my first clear it only took like 3 hours.
>>

Not with that attitude.
Don't look for even easier games, get into the mood of practicing stages/bosses and becoming consistent instead.

Do what this >>723065295 anon says. Play some games and find one you have the most fun playing. This is gonna sound like such a noob shitter thing to say but does this genre really need to be so closely tied together with one hit kills? I know ill feel it less if i just practice more but would having a health bar on my ship and making some attacks do different damage really ruin the genre? Its also always been weird to me how i need to treat tiny little bullets with the same respect as a giant lazer or missle but i guess thats part of the charm for those who love shumps

This is a random question but im trying to remember a shmup I played as a kid. It would have been on either the nes or the snes or the sega megadrive. All I remember is that at the end of the 1st level there was like a cut scene where like your boss or something slams his fist on a desk.

>but does this genre really need to be so closely tied together with one hit kills?
Kind of. It's good feedback that you're getting hit, but while some shmups like Akashicverse implement health bars well, it still shows why that system doesn't always work in the genre
>>
>>723070817
A few games have something close. DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu has an autobomb system, so whenever you get hit you survive and automatically use a bomb. Basically, your bombs are your health bar, but you can also manually use them to gain extra damage in exchange for safety.
Also, in Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius and the SNES version of Gokujou Parodius there's a character named Dracula-kun (in the former he's a secret character you have to input a code to unlock.) Dracula-kun's shield power-up transforms him into a bat that can take 3 hits before dying, no questions asked, with i-frames.
The Darius series also has a powerful shield that takes multiple hits.

Better places have already ranked STGs by difficulty. OP has made this spam thread multiple times. Picking a shmup for a beginner isn't about "what can I clear in 1 day", it's about "what will temper my expectations for the future so I can identify what, if anything, I'm doing wrong and not freak if I don't clear a game in a week". The fun part about a shmup is learning, and as a beginner this is when they are the most fun because it's when you can learn the most.

It's LITERALLY THE SAME GAME copied over 25 times.
How can you play the same game, admittedly a pretty good one, but reskinned for 40 years?

There is no difference between shmup games. They haven't evolved, they refuse to. You're just getting different music(amazing music tho) and new patterns. It's the exact same game.
>>
>>723077640
Where to look depends a lot on what's going on but the rule of thumb is:
>look ahead to dodge incoming aimed bullets or faster spreads
>look around your ship to micrododge dense patterns

That's because these are shitty generals made by people who don't play the games. Why would you ever get a serious answer in a shitty thread like this? If it was an actual thread actually discussing a game they were playing then you wouldn't have to ask because the answer would already be obvious from the discussion taking place. And no, your question does not deserve an answer.
>>
>>723078147
Not at your ship, but around and only if you are dealing with slow and dense clusters of bullets. It's to help you spot gaps in your immediate surroundings.
For most of the game you will probably want to look ahead instead, so you can move out of bullet trajectory in advance.

There's literally nothing interesting about it. It's just 4 minutes of rote hard memorization on a route thats not particularly interesting or complicated.
>>
>>723094704
Well, there's also discovering and experimentation since you need to figure out the route first. Having to keep the chain up does make in interesting, as does juggling different subweapons for different sections. There's also a fun little trick in speed change dealing a tiny bit of damage around the back of the ship where the thrusters are which makes both routing and execution a little more interesting.
I'm sorry that you don't find caravans interesting, but there's fun to be had there too.

What advice that I gave was terrible? That arcade stick seems to be preferable for shmups (and other arcade genres too for obvious reasons) or that shmups are totally playable with a keyboard if you don't have anything else?

There is no catch-all answer for proper hardware, and in many cases an arcade stick is not good at all. Many doujin/indie shmups are designed with rapid movement changes in mind because the developers play them on keyboard, which is not a strength of a stick. Additionally, sticks/hitboxes offer many advantages outside shmups which are in no way comparable to a keyboard.
https://youtu.be/0v0z6kZs1BE
The only right answer is to play what is comfortable, as 99% of shmups are not execution heavy. Changing input devices will likely not improve your play.

Where to look at the screen to avoid bullets is also not as simple as looking near your ship or the origin of the bullets. A very important technique in shmups is being able to ascertain where safe lanes appear, to be able to stream and manipulate bullets, and to respond to predictable attacks in a way that does not require concentration so you can focus on other things, and as this is an incredibly complex genre the answer is far too long winded to truly address in an awful thread like this one that does not deserve it. OP should quite frankly punch sand and stop misleading people.

If you want advice you should record your gameplay, take screenshots or webms of where you are stuck, and make a thread asking honestly. This is the quickest way to improve.

No way. Lives are at it's most scarce in the series, and newbs won't be able to figure out the trance gimmick well.
DDC is fine for a starter. EoSD is commonly suggested because it was most players' first 2hu, however I agree that the barebones gameplay (despite being at it's purest) can be difficult or off-putting for total beginners. IN is usually suggested because it's very lenient (abundant resources) and easy to get into (spell practice, classic character ensemble as opposed to nu-toehoes).

The Parodius scoring system is insanely underrated. It's basically Yagawa scoring but you can bounce the medals with your shots and turn them into power-ups, which is often unoptimal so you sometimes have to stop shooting to be able to score. It definitely puts it above Gradius imo, which doesn't really even have a scoring system.

Night Striker Gear is an exception because it's 100% developed by M2 and not a port, therefore there's no arcade-perfect gold standard for it to measure up to. And no two PC builds will run any given game EXACTLY the same, while a console's performance is even across the board, and that level of preciseness is what defines M2's stance on specifically their own "STG" releases.

Boost Mode is optional. Even so, I wouldn't be surprised if M2 somehow ensured their games to not handle any differently on a Pro.

You are incorrect it's not exactly rocket surgery to modify an arcade stick. Additionally a JLF is just as good.

Actually it was because I was using Seimitsu buttons instead of Sanwa buttons that I lost, it wasn't because I never block and always spam my highest punishable moves
>>
>>723128627
Sanwa: Has occasional opposite directions when returning to neutral
Seimitsu: Has NO opposite directions, returns to neutral perfectly
>>
>>723131220
It's all a matter of spring stiffness. The default JLF spring is very weak, like 0.6lbs. With a 2lbs spring you have no rebound.
Also this doesn't apply to shmups since you never yank the stick like in fighting games.
