The remake isn't horrible it's just unnecessary. It is a decent game and if you like the original games you'd probably enjoy that too. It brings in new areas and fancier graphics. But the characters are worse and it made some dumb design choices.
There aren't many reasons to play the remake. The original still looks good, gameplay is still excellent, and it's cheaper. Once you've played all two (maybe three?) of the original game you can consider the remake.

Varies from room to room, some are gorgeous (people keep reposting that room with the hologram from the bridge for a reason, but some are just shockingly flat and gray (the room where Hammond dies to a Brute, for example, I thought something was wrong with my game when I reached it), and the textures, well, it's an Xbox360/PS3 game. Though DS2 is also an Xbox360/PS3 game, and it looks much better.

Also I had no idea Warren Ellis contributed to the game's lore and story.

It was baffling how much they missed the mark with the story and characters in DS3.
What does this violent and grim survival horror game need? A love triangle, of course. And give Ellie bigger tits, and make the new guy an absolute asshole.
It would be so much more fitting and interesting if Ellie and Isaac were just friends. Doing this whole "oh, they were together but it didn't work so they split up but they still have feelings for each other, I wonder what will happen???" sub-plot was idiotic.
>>

>>
>>723177121
EA wants the franchise to sell 20 million copies every time despite none of the entries coming close to that. So they put Motive on capeshit instead.
Hopefully when the iron man game flops for being 10 years out of date theyll be put back on Dead Space 4.
>>
>>723177121
Just like Dead Space 3, the remake underperformed by EA's standards, so the franchise is kill (again).
>>
>>723176846
I've never played the third game and everytime people describe it I feel less inclined to try it out. I think if they seriously wanted to implement the coop aspect, they could have had Ellie be the 2nd player. Then again, there'd be people thinking "I don't wanna be the girl!"
>>
>>723177121
Didn't meet (unrealistic) expectations.
>>
>>723177121
DS2 is just too good. You can't even add open world to it without breaking the narrative.

>>723177221
All DS games underperformed. DS1 underperformed, so EA said "make it less scary and more action-y" (even though DS2 is still pretty spooky). DS2 underperformed compared to its massive budget (top 10 most expensive games), so EA said "make DS3 with cover shooting I guess". DS3 underperformed, so EA said "fuck it, this just doesn't work unless you're Capcom".
>>
>>723177315
It's simultaneously not as bad as people make it out to be but also not a good entry overall. Go into it with a friend and low expectations and you'll probably have a good time.
>>
>>723177121
Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't greenlit because EA wanted Motive to focus on the Iron Man game instead of them working on two titles at the same time. Now that the mudslims are in charge of EA, we're never gonna see single player games coming from them ever again.
>>
The one saving grace about EA being sold to Saudi's is that Dead Space might get a revival or (better yet) sold off to a competent develoepr.

She was already an established character. Giving her bigger tits, a bigger cleavage, and then making her seem less efficient and in a relationship is just handling the character in a dumb way.
Ellie was a good, fun, competent, likable character. Think about it, nobody ever says shit about her. She wasn't useless, she wasn't obnoxious, wasn't a girl boss or just there to be sexy. DS3 fucked her over.
>>
>>723175856
the kendra shit is way improved with the way she betrays you. I don't get why she had to gloat like that in the original. mostly my issues with it is it completely decides to fuck over the entire story. Like, how the fuck would they even make a fourth one? the awakening DLC even makes it worse with goddamn brethren moons showing up which no matter how pissed Issac is, he can't kill that many necros and possibly make a difference. I guess you could do the cop out (oh it was all a dream) or something but that would have been lame.
>>

>>
>>723177978
I wanted a Doom: Hell on Earth situation so the brothermoon shit would've been great. I really liked the brief glimpse we got of the cyberpunk city in Dead Space 3 and making an entire game would've been my shit.
>>
>>723178107
The problem is that you need a massive asspull for humanity to "win" in that situation. Or make a super dark ending where all you can hope for is to launch some kind of ark while 99.99999999% of humanity just fucking dies.
>>
>>723178107
I agree, but there's always usually some kind of hope at the end of DS games. a DS4 with just the Earth turning into necromorphs wouldn't be fulfilling because Issac probably won't be able to change humanity's dark fate. It could only be somewhat bittersweet, if a really good writer got it. At the end of his suffering every game, there needs to be a payoff. If you just end up chopping some necros and oh, well Issac nice try and he just dies, what's the point?
>>
>>723178107
dude how would you even make this scary though? It would just be war/ a one-sided massacre in probably a few hours and completely removed from anything resembling DS1's formula of tight corridors with horrors coming at you.
>>
>>723178107
I'd honestly be more interested in a spinoff where you get to play as Carver preceding the events of DS3 like from the motion comic. Obviously wouldn't title it as DS4 cause that would be false advertisement.

>two cool horror games
>both perform below expectations
>let's try shoving co-op, crafting, human monsters in the third one, maybe this time it'll work
>>
>>723179848
It's one of those things where it reeks of design-by-committee.
Like the weapon crafting. A big part of DS1+2, and other games like them, is how you find a new weapon and have to decide if you're gonna focus on it or leave it in storage. Finding a new weapon is a cool moment since it's not just the same thing you already have but with +10% more damage. Every weapon handles differently, uses different ammo, and has different upgrades.
That all results in picking weapons being a very interesting choice.
In DS3 that all goes out with window when you can more or less craft whatever you want. Finding a new part is nowhere near as interesting as a whole new weapon.

>EA wants the franchise to sell 20 million copies every time despite none of the entries coming close to that.
I wish people stopped repeating this bullshit. I don't even know who made up this fairy tale. Sure EA is a dogshit company but Dead Space remake sold very poorly. If your game goes on a heavy discount a mere month after publishing, you know you are fucked. The development cost easily over $100M. You would be better off buying gold than investing into Dead Space.

The mistake EA did was pumping so much money into DS2. While DS2 is one of my favorite games, it didn't end well for them back then either because it severely underperformed, again you would be better off buying gold. The second mistake EA made was trying to turn the franchise into something it wasn't with DS3. If they played the long game, they could've potentially built it into another RE franchise, but they were too shortsighted for that.

Getting 4 different studios to animate the perspectives of the different characters is... an alright idea, why one can even say it's artistic. But the CGI sections bridging them together look awful. The styles are also not different enough to justify the inconsistencies in the character designs. Look at Stross, Doofenshmirtz looking ass.
Other than the visual side I guess the plot and characters were all pretty much serviceable 6/10. Atleast it's better than the previous movie.

Seeing the effects of the Brethren Moons on Earth would be pretty cool. The first hours of the game could show the EarthGov forces trying to mount a resistance, which could be pretty spectacular given Earth is the center of their power (of course you have to ignore that retarded shit in Dead Space 3 where they say one ship is Earth Gov's last soldiers). Then with ever minute that passes there are less and less human survivors, the defense of the EarthGov military gets weaker and more diffuse until in the second half of the game you're wondering through a dead hellscape.

Weapon crafting could have been good if instead of making weapons from scrap, you just altered the alternate firing modes and added small effects like stun and shit, imagine the pulse rifle, but ypu could give it the alt firing mode from 1, pr the shotgun shot from the Wii rail shooter, or just the plain grenade launcher

It is an exaggeration but you only need to have been there to see what they expected. The report was they demanded 3 sell 5,000,000 units in 2013. Hard, hard sell for something like Dead Space, but EA was convinced the franchise was going to be huge. They dedicated a lot of money and resources to it. Dead Space had 3 games, 3 spinoffs, a trilogy of books, multiple comics, 2 animated feature length movies, and more, in the span of about 5 years.

They saw what Halo and Gears did, creating entire universes off the back of popular action science fiction games for nerds, and wanted a piece. When it didn't pan out, they pulled the plug.

Even better is her reaction to Isaac admitting that Stross never had what it took to get the job done. She's like "Are you fucking serious, dude?"
She was saddled with that demented wreck and told that he was essential to the mission, and for all her efforts she got her eye gauged out with a screwdriver.
I like how she gets back at Isaac when she drives the drill straight through the government sector with him on top.

>all you can hope for is to launch some kind of ark
I've had this thought that maybe the initial use for the marker, convergence and the moons may have been precisely that - an attempt from an alien species, most likely a highly psychic one at that, to escape some calamity, by storing their consciousness in one place while using their bodies as the building blocks for the ark. There were supposed to be more steps to the whole process after convergence, but somewhere along the way, some error or virus or tampering happened and the marker(s) remained stuck on convergence, so all they could do then was repeat that process on and on and on. It would have been the peak of irony.

Isaac's suit is really cool and the necromorphs are a good concept, everything else about the first game is... sadly garbage, thats what I was thinking while finishing the last chapter. It doesnt work as survival horror because EA devs are retarded, and showered you with ammo and healing items, and the levels with save points and constant checkpoints, so the tension of fucking up is gone, and the enemies are very easy even on hard difficulty, and it barely works as action horror because all the fights are the same, you enter a new area, lockdown sequence, kill all the enemies to progress, its like the devs were scared of the players being bored if they didnt have something to shoot every time, and shooting the limbs of necromorphs surprisingly gets old, the game is just repetitive and mediocre.

I feel like Remake's biggest mistake was adding that miner's wife to the Nicole twist for the sake of misguided logical consistency. It hit really hard because you realised that Isaac was truly alone the moment Kyne dies, and that loss of hope solidified Marker's hold on him immediately. Instead, they chose to add an ugly sheboon that was with you all along, diminishing the narrative hit on the player.

>Oh of course it's a complete flop. Makes you wonder if the devs ever even knew what made ds so good or if they just blindly lucked out once like so many other studios do too.
Well I can believe the deadline shift to christmas really did them a number, they lost 4 months of dev time. I remember watching an interview with Cory Barlog and he said they had to make the entire game in a year after they lost years on iterating on a single room with mechanics. Callisto Protocol went the other way, the assets were done, but they needed more time on the mechanics.

No, they are not. Especially in regards to video games.

Has endlessly throwing money at Star Citizen proved that you should just give the devs all the time and money they want and they'll release a perfect game?

You HAVE to set boundaries. The game got three years of development time. Ample time. Another 3 months wasn't going to magically transform it from mediocrity into brilliance.

Sometimes you just need to cut your losses.

Sure, but killing necromorphs and kissing, while rad, is unlikely to be what two bros sit down for an afternoon of. Nobody likes Captain Insecure, nobody likes how the plot goes, but I bet their marketing team would never have allowed the main story be one in which the two co-op characters fuck.

>>
>>723225768
What would have been an option is instead of making Ellie's new love interest a douche that goes full retard and betrays everyone even though literally the entire human race is at stake so they can easily just brush the love triangle aspect aside they make the two co-op players both be decent people competing for Ellie's affection.

I don't think they quite understood just how retarded they made Ellie seem by having her hookup with a complete asshole that sells them all out. It's not even like he's suave or charismatic or anything. He's just a dick and her going for him makes her look like a fucking idiot.

The female lead got a boob job and is making out with a jock while the protagonist stares on in bug eyed incredulity. I fully expected in that scene for Isaac to start killing everyone and we'd get to play a game where Isaac is the threat instead of a survivor. I probably should have stopped in the first fight when they revealed the game was now a cover shooter.

Write off the events of Dead Space 3 and the DLC as a dementia addled premonition Issac had(don't think about it)
Weapon crafting is out. You're back to 3 weapons with 2 firing modes at once.

I meant the human necromorphs were vaguely resembling the ayys, they were hunched over like them with the head hanging low, spine usually sticking out as well, extra arms around the stomach area, legs were usually fucked up and bent wrong and the two biggest arms would create a similar quadruped posture.
>>
>>723225008
It was worse with Callisto because they had a deadline for april or whatever, so that means they had to finish the gold in march which would be the 4 lost months. The publisher decided to push the deadline back to december because people spend more around Christmas. It would probably work had they finished the gameplay mechanics first, because you can duct tape a lot as long as the core loop is fun, for example DS2 itself did this with the later chapters which are barely glued together to finish the game coherently. But in this case the development was backwards so it was ogre for Callisto and ogre for Krafton, as no one wants to buy a shit game and horror sells slowly outside of RE games (word of mouth says bad and it's over).

Don't listen to this retard, the necromorphs look really good, they wear different clothes depending on which part of the Ishimura you're on (like in DS2), there is more attention to detail, there's a couple of small things that foreshadow things in DS2 and 3, the combat is really really good and they have made the Ishimura one single map that you can backtrack freely.
The story is the same, although Isaac talks, some of the original characters are meh, except for Dr. Mercer who's a better character (tho his death is kinda shit) and the new ending is a really fun jumpstart for DS2
Don't let retards talk you out of a good game just because the 3 bathrooms in the whole game don't have a separating wall between them now.

The correct answer is to play both.
Similar, but with a lot of variation to throw you off, if you play them back to back. Bunch of guns are also basically new, enemy placement and behavior is different. It's pretty and shooting morphs still feels great.
This is most likely the last we get from the series for the next 10 years, so just enjoy the ride.

It blows my mind people think the remake Mercer is a better character. He sounds like saturday morning villain. I was annoyed by him. The og Mercer sounds legit insane and acts insane right to the end with no doubt he was right. I would say every character except Isaac (and maybe Kendra) was butchered but a lot of it is also terrible VA work. Kyne and Hammond took the worst lot. Shit design and even shittier VA.
>>
I wish there was a way to have the "intensity director" randomizer work right from the start instead of predetermined spawns. Such a great feature but it activates only in rooms you backtrack so it's basically not used unless you do the sidequests.

Yes but the budget was also remarkably higher. I am not disagreeing with you, EA dun goofed. But DSR performed poorly even with no strings attached. I guess people still remember how EA took the franchise behind the barn. The correct move would be to repeat DSR with DS2R and slowly build the goodwill back. Morality tends to go out the window when you are dealing with the equivalent of a genetic cultivator, apex predator and space parasite. Nothing shows true existential horror on full display like an insidious deathcult who has subverted all sectors to offer the people up to said deity regardless of their standing in the given society. Small colonies on the outskirts are probably completely oblivious to it assuming there no unitologists or markers there to serve as a conduit and a signal for the brethren moons. Those squatters and pirates turn out to be the smartest ones avoiding large colonies and large populated planets, the more potential biomass the bigger the risk, not to mention greater risk of having insane unitologists actively sabotaging and destabilizing societies in order to hasten and accelerate a convergence. Like the time they intentionally sent a ship straight into the center of a city with a marker and disabled all communications in order to cause as much death and chaos as possible

Those descriptions were taken from the cert. You have to describe everything your game contains and have clips of said moments to get it. If you omit something or lie about it you can lose the cert and be removed from stores so there's no incentive to lie. The game got M rating from someone who saw the naked women and said "yep this is M" but PEGI is harsher because of the brackets (16-18).

Enemies don't react to being hit and there is zero structure to the combat or difference between weapons besides how fast they make enemies die. Dead Space has reliable feedback on how enemies react to being hit in certain spots by certain weapons and strategically dismembering them is a core part of the combat, Cronos has none of that. Plus the story was nonsensical and boring, the enemies were completely forgettable, the environments were just Russian Detroit, you have the modern game curse of an hour of the game's length being spent watching traversal animations where you slide between a cabinet or under a railing and there were zero unique mechanics beyond the done a billion times before "hold key to make walkway manifest" shit.

DS2 Ellie is one of the coolest female characters i've seen in vidya. She has the same energy as good female action leads from the classic movies, and intense "GF who has your back in a bar fight" energy with Isaac. This is such an insane rarity nowadays.

I just played Dead Space 2 since that Marker patch just came out that fixes physics at framerates above 60 (among fixing other things like the game working on modern cpu, mouse acceleration, vsync, optionally disabling weapon DLC so you dont start the game with every gun)

My main 2 weapons were the pulse gun which is just generally a good weapon and also useful for killing a massive amounts of child necromorphs the game throws at you, and the Javelin which can kill almost any enemy in the game with its alt fire. This game is so fucking fun I dont think I disliked a single part. Coming back to the ishimura was one of my favorite parts, I like how they let the atmosphere linger people throwing enemies at you. There are a lot of parts where you can hear them and expect them to attack but they dont so you are always on edge.

You could always say that Earth being fucked was a hallucination, a vision of the future. It'd be a cop-out but it wouldn't be out of character for the series.
Otherwise set the game a few weeks later where the last bits of humanity, those who were on space bases and ships when Earth got gobbled up, are trying to figure out what to do. The moons must be stopped. Sounds like it's time to use a planet cracker.

>survival horror vidya about a series of pirate stations and flotillas trying to navigate the void without giving away their positions to the resident brethren moons converging on now defenseless Earth

Dead Space 2 truly was a perfect sequel.
>>
>>723256675
Eh it was the final stretch. Hollywood bullshit (especially the ebin iron man segments) throughout the game was probably the most common complaint among people who loved DS1 and hated DS2. I think it all worked out really well, "cool" michael bay shit never felt like it messed with the horror aspect to me personally. DS2 is the most underrated game of all time
>>
>>723267097
thanks for letting me know about the patch, I didn't even know it existed. Honestly, the PC port of DS2 is amazing, Steam version runs well out of the box.

>I wish people stopped repeating this bullshit. I don't even know who made up this fairy tale.
EA said it both times they killed the series. The Remake isn't great and it didn't sell anywhere near where it needed to for acceptable success, but it never had any hope in reaching EAs expectations.
>>
>>723268058
Yeah its always run really good. The main things is letting it run on CPUs with above 10 cores, and fixing the game above 60 fps.

>>

It was patched, day 1 the group fights were almost impossible because enemies would just gangbang you, then they "fixed" it by lobotomizing them so they wait their turn, making it impossible to lose if you just hold left/right during a fight.
>>
>>723165995
Yeah, I think graphics peaked around 2015 because you still had good artists working with modern hardware.

It won't be until PS6 that the next big jump in graphical fidelity will actually happen.

It will actually look like the E3 trailers of 2013 right before PS4/xboxone came out.

Not only that I actually think DS2 is scarier than DS1.

It kinda works in a "Isaac's mind is shouting at him" way. She's crawling on the desk, getting in his face, being loud and blinding him.
But it ends up looking a bit silly and isn't scary at all.
>>
>>723253959
IIRC man-made markers are basically everywhere because the government realised they had a reproducible source of seemingly infinite free energy that was mostly safe with the appropriate shielding around each marker. It's probably only the absolute rinkiest, dinkiest colonies that don't have one knocking around somewhere.
>>
>>723257924
>You owe me an eye, you bastard!
>>
>>723271726
>shitsniffing backwater colony still relying on solar power and fusion because they couldn't get clearance to make the jump towards marker energy
>uninigs didn't bother subverting them either because they were too irrelevant to bother with
The good part is that you are alive. The bad part is your colony may have fallen into a warring states period, pirates are glassing you from orbit and you are a resource homogeneous state like an industrial or agriworld that has no ability to scale outwards. Imagine Solo Nobre vs Necromorphs. An isolated planet right on the fringes but isn't strong enough to project influence beyond its own biosphere.

Tits too smol
>>
>>723257924
So what was the logic behind her not going full schizo like everyone else? You had the redhead in the cartoon that managed to cuddle right up to a marker without wanting to claw her own eyes out. Ellie must be working with something to not go full retard like the rest.
>>
>>723265223
Only thing awakening showed is that the ending is open-ended. Everything was flashing red by the end of it, which in the rest of the dlc usually was a sign of a illusion projected by the moons

>>
>>723270218
There is nowhere to jump to. All the graphical fidelity is already too realistic and any small gain comes at an enormous sunk cost fallacy cost. There is a reason decade old games look about on par with a 2025 release while budgets are breaking records

Stylization and unique art style has more potential in unique looks today then simply trying to brute force more golden pixels
>>
>>723273908
Very high IQ. It's shown that the marker influence is shaped by your INT stat. High IQ people get urges to make more makers.
>>
>>723242192
I still don't get why people memed this scene, of course these guys will think this mangled corpse is a necromorph, have you seen how some of them look?

>>723270218

you had to be there. for the time this was nuts playing a game with this level of graphical fidelity was not a thing back then. not the people you're replying to, or even talking to, but I saw your screenshot, and comment, and had a fat hit of nostalgia.
>>
>>723220207
how? i dont doubt you I just have little to no knowledge on it
>>
Why are the physics glitched in the PC version of DS2? It's like every object is floating an inch above the ground until Isaac walks into the room then everything falls.
>>
>>723282128
Because you have to install the Marker patch :)
>>
Why did the black necromorphs voices change near the end of the game? They sound like normal necros until you get close to the marker and then they have totally different high pitched screams. And it's just that one enemy type.
>>
I would like to play 3 but I can't get it to work with a controller.

I never thought I would be nostalgic for this era. It feels like early 10s were the very tail end of decent Western games. It all went to shit around 2014.

I hate this thing. Either you slow them and don't need the weapon, or you try and use the ripper without slowing and the necromorphs just fuck your ass.
>>
>>723183329
The sound is annoying and it's unreliable in a serious fight. For me the ultimate reward was the flamethrower. After 3 or 4 playthroughs when you basically have infinite money to blow on ammo for it.
