Your install has to be linked to a Microsoft account. You can't be on a local account. Also it's only 1 year
MAS can give you 3 years without having to use a Microsoft account on any edition
Also you can switch to IoT LTSC 2021 for W10 security updates until 2032

>Can I use MAS to switch to LTSC
Yes and no, it's a bit more complicated
You're not using MAS to switch to IoT LTSC 2021, but you use it activate Windows with HWID after switching
Massgrave (the team behind MAS) explains how to switch to IoT LTSC 2021 without losing your files or programs here (pic related):
https://massgrave.dev/windows10_eol

The method is a bit weird because LTSC is supposed to be installed clean but apparently it works perfectly. If you have more questions about this and Windows in general, the Windows thread on /g/ can be pretty helpful: >>>/g/106855834

I'm using ubuntu and mint currently.
It's not optimal for gaming but it does the job. If invoker suddenly casts a billion spells mint sometimes crashes and ubuntu should be no different.

I am thinking about moving to another distro but nothing else looks better. Fedora/Bazzite is a no go for me because of Israel ties.
Arch/Garuda I'm not sure about because I've heard about how it's difficult.

I guess I'll just stay on ubuntu/mint until steamOS.

this
I used a pirated copy of win 7 from around 2013 up until 2022 and never had updates turned on in the first place. An occasional malwarebytes scan, browser script blocker, and not clicking/downloading shady shit was all I needed. Pirated most of my games too: just stick to trusted scene groups or steam underground.
The only reason I moved to 10 was because of dx12 and some software not allowing itself to work on 7.

Steamdeck proved to me that gaming was viable on Linux and I switched to Archlinux in August. So far I've been doing fine with it. Even kernel-level anticheat works unless you're EA and you specifically target and defend against emulation layers like Proton and Wine, which is why I can't play BF6. But I haven't played an EA game since they tried to ram Origin down my throat so I don't really care.

Bazzite is probably the most retard-friendly Linux gaming distro, it is supposedly for gamers and specifically prevents you from fucking anything up and comes prepackaged with gpu drivers. Ubuntu and Mint should be fine too. Don't install Arch unless you like computers, are a virgin and accept that you'll be fixing things that have broken randomly, which is why I installed it.

Brother 2019 was practically yesterday. I haven't upgraded since 2012 and still don't have a good reason to. They don't make shit like they used to.
Modern CPU's have a telemetry chip Windows uses to gather data on the bios level. W11 is configured to refuse to run on CPUs too old to have that chip because they don't make any money off a user that isn't feeding them data. This was literally the whole point behind the forced W11 upgrade. If you're running an old CPU the upgrade manager just tells you to buy a new one or fuck off.
On a newer card can manually disable that chip in the bios, which will cause W11 to stop working.

After getting a steam deck I was very impressed with the OS on it and tried to get the SteamOS to work on my PC, but my hardware was not compatible (intel gpu). Instead I downloaded and installed Bazzite on an empty SSD I had since it was supposedly after the same look and feel as SteamOS. After some tinkering I got it to work properly with Steam and now it just werks. I can access all my files without any issues and many games also straight up run better. I haven't experienced a single crash, it's honestly quite bizarre.
I already hated moving on from Windows 7 to 10, especially because of the Microsoft spyware, but 11 was such a snitch that I decided to finally jump ship to Linux and I ain't looking back.

Then you probably should stop using computers, because we don't have a "just werks" OS like 7 anymore.
You either have to use an OS that works for microsoft half of the time and you need to tinker to stop it because otherwise your computer will be unusable garbage, or you have to use linux and google a bunch of solutions for weird problems.
Or you can use OSX, but it's just fucking bad and you will lose a lot of your time being forced to do the things in it's backward authoritarian ways.

You would have to intentionally download fake .exe files from ads or sketchy unofficial torrents, have someone maliciously pack something into mods, or have someone maliciously pack something into an automated updated which has happened to a few open source projects over the years but it's very rare (I'm talking like once every 3-5 years rare). The latter is also typically caught in a single day in most cases and a patch is released immediately for anyone affected.

Microsoft Defender stops basically everything under the sun, is also extremely paranoid and overly cautious due to how the whole protection works, and anything it doesn't catch you can just run Malwarebytes every month or so to sanity check it if you're worried. This isn't like even a decade ago, you have to pretty much intentionally download them now.

Maybe. Their issue is the fact they're mostly a year behind in software and driver updates compared to Fedora (Bazzite). They're only good every 2 years (2024, 2026, 2028, etc.) because that's when Ubuntu updates the LTS and pulls all the new software versions.

>What do you mean by power users
People who tinker with their OS or system as a hobby, often using the terminal to do stuff or fiddling around in the settings. A normal/average user just wants to have an OS that "just works" with very little to no configuration and wants to install software through a GUI app store and use the apps. Meanwhile a power user will commonly go through settings and config files, do stuff like debloating and optimizing, etc.

>>

Which one?
>>
>>723250356
11 runs significantly worse than 10 even with all the debloating possible. There's just no escaping that it's currently a worse, less optimized, less stable, less reliable and less capable platform.

The transition is being pushed explicitly for telemetry reasons. The average user stands to gain absolutely nothing from adopting 11 right now. In the future, maybe 11 will be updated into being a good OS, or at very least better than what 10 ever was, but why jump the gun? Transitioning to LTSC is as simple as upgrading to 11.

Like 6 years ago you could handwave poor optimization since there was always another hardware generation looming exponentially more powerful than the last. There's a reason everyone got lazy with optimization. But now current hardware can barely render 4k stably and every company is stuck on this AI chip meme making incremental progress (or regressing) each generation in favour of gimmicks most end users don't really benefit from. The concept behind windows 11, a bigger and bloatier operating system with more telemetry and less capability, was obsolete before windows 11 even officially launched and now it's just slowly becoming a frankenstein's monster of AI integration it was never designed for to accommodate hardware that can't support its wastefulness.

You can't remove Recall, because it's not there unless you're using ARM.

LTSC support will run until 2032. The gap between now and then is longer than the gap between windows 10's release and windows 11's release. By the time you need to leave LTSC, there's either going to be a windows 12 to complain about, or windows 11 will finally be worth using.

Its funny because no one actually LIKES windows, they tolerate it because its all they know and change is scary. But rather than learning about alternatives they seethe, cope, bargain, and do any level of mental gymnastics to not have to think about the truth; their operating system is actively hostile against them and every moment using it means they need to be on guard against it trying to fuck them over.

Why are so many updooters? I posted this in another thread. You want to take a risk on remote code execution just from web browsing? No, it's not just a chromium vulnerability.

> Microsoft's recent updates during August 2025 Patch Tuesday highlight a significant security effort, addressing over 100 vulnerabilities across its major products such as Windows, Office, and Hyper-V. Among these vulnerabilities, several have been rated as critical, with CVE-2025-53766 noted for its potential for remote code execution through malicious websites. Despite reports of an absence of active exploitation, the critical nature of these vulnerabilities necessitates immediate attention from users to mitigate any potential risks.

>Exploitability assessments from Microsoft suggest that actual exploitation of these vulnerabilities is unlikely, though caution is advised. Key vulnerabilities include issues in Windows' GDI+ component and graphics subsystem, which, if exploited, could allow attackers access to targeted systems via unsuspecting users. Given the commonality of user interaction with web content and documents, it's crucial for organizations to prioritize these patches to lessen potential vulnerabilities and enhance overall cybersecurity posture.

Even if you move to linux, update your shit. Holy fuck

How does a webpage on a fully updated browser hax00r your Windows? And they really should speak in plain english instead of gobbledygook like "Key vulnerabilities include issues in Windows' GDI+ component and graphics subsystem, which, if exploited, could allow attackers access to targeted systems via unsuspecting users. Given the commonality of user interaction with web content and documents, it's crucial for organizations to prioritize these patches to lessen potential vulnerabilities and enhance overall cybersecurity posture."

Like they should issue a bulletin that says this:

"Without this match, you could go to a website and the website can just run any code it wants and blow up your OS and delete all your shit so run this update now"

If they actually said shit like that people would listen instead of talking in code.

Once Microsoft commits publicly to not fixing security exploits anymore, it means it's open season for malicious actors to begin using exploits that were known but unaddressed, or find new ones to exploit.
Once an exploit is known, it will remain effective in perpetuity and slowly disseminate through bad actors from the high level active exploiters down to the average jeet that can just buy an ad on google and serve a malicious redirect to gain RCE access.

It's not instant doomsday but from the point of no return browsing even normal, innocuous and otherwise safe websites will become progressively less and less safe.

If you're considering giving Linux a try, I highly recommend you do a live install (not permanent) of the latest Linux Mint. Play around in the desktop and see if it suits your needs. Then you can do a wipe + full install of Mint, or you can dualboot Windows + Linux. I went full Linux, but it's up to you.

Not him but my guess is if its possible it'd be a flaw in the OS code that graphically draws the web browser, so the web browser could do nothing to stop it with updates. It'd be so low level most would not understand what was happening except the genius who makes it--the webpage would have some manner of getting code to execute through the usual methods like buffer overflow by just going after the right OS code flaw when drawing the graphical display of some component.

My main issue with W11 is that even if you do these kinds of things, there's regular reports of tons of people having all their shit reset whenever Microsoft decides to push some stupid ass updates that you can't say no to, or disable.

If I was able to get some sort of debloated W11 IoT LTSC that allowed me to select whether or not I wanted to update, then I'd maybe think about switching over. But for now my plan is to stick with W10 IoT LTSC for as long as it takes until W11 gets unfucked.

Because systems have been so hardened over the years that it's lost all attractiveness as an attack vector. You'll have to block pretty much everything to be safe with an outdated system since vulnerabilities are being patched and fixed consistently. You just aren't aware of how many there are since it's all being done silently.

However, I recently bought a laptop. As a windows user since 3.1 it was one of the most disgusting experiences I've ever been put through. They're mainly security update rather than features, if that's what you mean. But what sort of new features are you looking for in Windows? I just want something that works and doesn't cause me grief with automatic updates, destroying SSDs, deleting user files, etc. Stability is king

I don't need new features, mainly just curious if the security updates are geared to protecting normal users, or hospital machines that need to always be running. The two have very different needs when it comes to protection.

Goal is to gather marketing data on users and to force ads for simply having access to your computer.

Microsoft reached end stage of enshitification.

Not from Microsoft's point of view. LTSC is explicitly made for stability and security, regardless of how it's used. Hospitals are just as worried about being hacked as banks or government agencies are

Ads are not static, they're effectively a live link to an ad server that routes live links to active servers from whatever the source of each ad is. This is what allows ads in a space rotate dynamically. It means whenever you load a webpage, you're connecting to an ad server that is, by proxy, connected to various other servers.

Once you're connected to a server, you're vulnerable to attacks from that server. There was a famous attack a few years back where a malicious ad was snuck into google's ad service and infected hundreds of users via new websites. Normally this kind of attack is a non-issue because attacks are complicated and involved to develop and your security architecture is constantly being updated to protect you from whatever means of attack might be used. But once you stop getting security updates, and the attackers know that your popular platform is no longer getting security updates, they can confidently develop an attack through that server access that will never be patched. They don't have to target you specifically, just every w10 user (of which there are still plenty) who are all equally vulnerable. And it may take a long time before google realizes it's serving a malicious ad because the malicious part only targets deprecated w10 users.

That's just an example, of course. Not all vulnerabilities will come from ads being served via a website. It might come from a legit-looking indie game on steam, it might come via a p2p connection in an online game (the famous dark souls RCE from a few years back) and so on. The attacker might just be a stinky jeet scammer chained to a chair in a call center in the sweaty armpit of the world looking to farm crypto or feed a botnet, or it could be a shady indie company headquartered in Cyprus that's just looking to harvest and sell data or it could be some shithead belarusian teenager fucking around for the memes. The point is that these attacks will gradually become pervasive.

If a security vulnerability is easy enough to exploit, you'll have people trying to exploit it. Even if you only get one in one million to pay for your ransomware, that's still worth it if there are 100 million vulnerable systems connected to the internet

>>
>>723263653
Well I am still wondering if clicking on that changes something..... Because how it works right now for me is that basically it's using my hotmail account as my Windows login, *but* it basically never asks for my login or anything. Maybe for like 2 times a year it asks for my login for some reason but that's really only difference I've had when compared to local account.

I enabled that setting in hopes of being able to install reinstall Windows easier if I ever need to, because it says that "your cdkey is saved in your account".

I haven't had any performance issues but I've tried disabling everything I could just because that stuff is annoying. Like I get 0% CPU usage on idle. I guess they know that a guy from this hotmail address uses these "apps" or something, but I also guess that I don't care.

There are actually some benefits to having an M$ account. Your activation keys are saved to your account, and an O365 subscription offers insane value when you factor in the priority AI tool access, also OneDrive for ez and secure file backups. Keep a local software RAID for local backups if desirable for your porn, anime, pirated films, games, etc.
