>Game at launchLudokino>After the devs bent the kneeIrredeemable slop
>>723229716Rain World? More like Pain World, am I right?
Cool and unique game, designed to give the experience of being a prey animal in a hostile alien world A lot of players bounce off of it because it can be punishing (you're deliberately underpowered and almost everything wants to kill you) and somewhat cryptic, but it's really worth sticking with imo
I'm more about brain world, yafeelme
>>723230636Ok, I'll commit. The art style is some of the best I've ever seen. Is it a game best played completely blind, or should I consult the wiki if I'm lost?
>>723231240Definitely go in blind, but a beginner's tip is definitely to avoid the Drainage System area when starting out, it's a bit of a noob trap.
>>723229716https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KN1nHTHP5R8
>>723231240Yeah the animation style is what drew me in as wellWould recommend playing as blind as possible, there are a couple of areas that might cause new players to get stuck but the game generally points you in the right directionAlso don't worry too much about dying early on, you still keep map progress and that's more important in the long run
for me, it's chimney canopy
>>723231240Play blind. Wiki only as a complete last resort.
>>723230119>bent the kneeWell? Don't leave us hanging. Elaborate.
>>723231939They didn't support President Trump
>>723229716The base game is great. The DLC is fanfic tier trash. Go in blind if you can.
>>723229716Rain World is a masterpiece.
>>723231939They added a bunch of cheat options and an easy mode because hollow knight fans cried about the game being too hard
>>723231939An update from when the devs managed to get back the rights to the game added a bunch of shit that directly went against the original vision>Update now has tutorials for advanced tech on loading screens despite the devs saying previously they didn't want to tell the player anything>Added more food and reduced enemies in some areas to make survival easier>An entire "accessibility features" menu where you can make the game even easier, add more UI elements, etc etc>Added a kill/score count during the hibernation screen>Also a collectibles UI for the hibernation screen (genuinely useful, but still bending the knee to their "We don't want to communicate anything to the player" philosophy)>Let fans make a DLC where you play as their overpowered OCs (The Saint isn't too bad though)>Devs also tried making an onlyfans account for one of the in-game characters and made art of him dressing up as a catboyLast two are more personal gripes but they only add to the complete demystification of the game. They're abandoning their artistic merits to appeal to furries and fags, and par tof this is by making the game easier to pick up, which is done by clunkily adding more tutorials, and adding filler regions that don't add to the world in any way.
>>723229716There are no droughts in Rain World.
>>723232546There are loading screens?
>>723232180Monk wasn't added for months after release and is barely easier than Survivor, plus they added Hunter at the same time which is a significantly harder speedrun mode Cheat menu/remix is a Downpour thing
>>723232872I played Monk after Survivor. It's basically journalist mode. The few enemies I encountered kinda ignored me. White lizards are practically just part of the background. Only hard part was Unfortunate Development.
>>723232546>Devs also tried making an onlyfans account for one of the in-game characters and made art of him dressing up as a catboyTell me more
>>723233234
>>723232872Monk enemies are extremely passive compared to survivor and hunter. You can walk right past stuff like kelp and it doesn't even grab you.
>>723233341Is that real? That’s very funny. People are mad about that?
Update: I've died 15 times and I think I'm having a good time. The game feels like alien technology. I love the sparse sound design, the use of kick-drums. It remains the most visually appealing game I've ever played, I think. I've also never felt this lost. But I think I enjoy being lost. Overall I do feel like prey.
>>723233343Monk is also harder in some ways. His spear throw is weaker, while his reduced weight makes the spiders more aggressive towards him. 5 Pebbles can be a nightmare if you take a wrong turn because Monk is further down the timeline, meaning 5 Pebbles has more rot.
>>723234147It's real, the devs tweeted out that they failed to make the account because OnlyFans said the character wasn't real.>People are mad about that? Not really, no. I listed it mainly because it feels like something they did specifically for marketing, and the shitposty nature of it mostly invited a lot of kids to it, which is funny given there's also official art of the character shoving his ass in front of the camera.
>>723234435>Overall I do feel like prey. You start that way, but learn to be somewhere in the middle of the foodchain by the end. Some of the other characters like Spear Master put you near the top.
>>723234435>The game feels like alien technologyIt really does, it helps that the art style is so unique, it's incredibly rare for pixel art to feel so immersive/realistic.
>>723233341I thought this sort of thing was somewhat funny at first, but then I realised that shit like this is why Rain World's community under Akupara is complete shit.
I've tried to play this game 3 times now, but always end up quitting a few hours in. Do I need to stick with it longer or is it just not for everyone? So far there's just been traversing and sleeping, and a weird counter while sleeping.
>>723229716If it wasn't for Factorio, it would be my favourite game of all time. Avoid the DLC, first one isn't terrible but neither are really "necessary".Embrace the prey mindset.
>>723229716You'll lose your souls…All of them. Over and over againHah hah hah....one of the greatest games of the last decade, prepare to be filtered
>>723234693But then you enter the garbage wastes as spearmaster and feel like you're right at the bottom.
>>723235247Might just not be for you, but if it helps I got extremely stuck on my first playthrough after getting hopelessly lost in Shaded Citadel and didn't come back to finish it until about a year later It might click after you get to a certain point in the game
>after vultures began appearing I started getting incredibly anxious any time I'm under an open skyThis game is a masterpiece at making me actual feel like a rodent
>>723229716Survival kino with later DLCs being either fan works made full and entirely based around post beating the normal game so they are just fun/challenge runs, or they are the watcher and new normal stuff.
>>723235965I remember experiencing that for the first time as well and having some twisted sense of excitement bc nothing else has evoked those exact feelings before.
>>723235627I don't think I ever went there as him. In fact I seemed to just miss that area with all the characters. I think I always went through the drains to reach Moon, then I'd head up to Pebbles, then down the Wall and over to the Chimneys.
>>723235965I only get like that with the spiders. The twitchy way they move makes them a lot harder for me to predict than the vultures. I felt a lot of relief after I got the aimable spears mod, because then I could nail those spiders without getting close.
I didn't understand it and deleted it. I know the goal is explore, find shelter and survive but I couldn't find the shelters most of the time and kept dying. I found doors with symbols I couldn't open. Platforms I couldn't reach. Didn't know if I was missing power up or I needed more movement knowledge. Kept wandering around avoided monsters until I died again and repeat.I am not a big fan of the trial and error approach so I stopped. Same thing happened with Don't Starve.
>>723236382do spiders avoid you if they see you as a threat?I remember killing one and after that they seemed to give me a wide berthdon't know if I just got lucky or if they actually do recognize you
>>723231939Hired modders with no game design experience to make and sell dlcs. The first one, in hindsight, wasn't so bad but second is some heavy modded sloppa. What sucks is that both dlcs have some cool moments in them but man the level design in comparison to original game is so bad
>>723236494Like actual spiders, their mind is a mystery. Best you can do is avoid their line of sight as much as possible, because they just decide on their own when they think you should be chased down.
>>723234435Cat part in 'slugcat' is there for a good reason. You can make your way to the top of the food chain with some effort, just don't get overconfident
>>723236565Selling content modders made that is so greedy af and funny. I bet lore is ass or contradicts base game plot too.
>>723236494Depends on the spider and one which slugcat you play as. All big yellow spiders will avoid you for 7 seconds after seeing you, then they start hunting you. I think the red ones will try to shoot you with barbs as soon as they can, but they might be like yellow ones sometimes. The little critter spiders in the dark caves work based on how much light is around you and how heavy your slugcat is. They'll be temporarily afraid of you if you have a light source, and if you're a heavy cat they will wait to attack you until they they have a big numerical advantage. The heavier you are, the more critters need to be on you to kill you.
>>723236730IT DOES DONT GET ME STARTED I HATE IT SO MUCH
> https://youtu.be/6ARvtQ-yZMk?si=d4DSvn_o3V1hryI1
>>723236730>I bet lore is ass or contradicts base game plot too.pretty much
Base game was okay-ish. Then the DLC mod happened and everything went to shit
>>723236730There's 5 slugcats you can play as that were made by a team of modders. Their lore additions are officially not canon and exist as like a separate continuity, but most fans disregard that since what lore they do add is rather deep and well liked.
>>723236835>>723236910What are the contradictions?
>>723230131Yes.And this is from someone who freaking loved the game. Also the devs need help, their spaghetti code is so broken, the new DLC is literally unplayable after the first shelter on the Switch and PS4.
>>723236730Rightfully, downpour is not exactly known as canon despite being in the game as a DLC. One of the devs flat out say downpour is an alternate timeline/universe a while back
>>723237167Fuck me I'm retarded
>>723237065It's less that it contradicts existing lore and more that it turns slugcats from just another animal in a natural ecosystem and turns them into zany Pokemon that are literally the most important creatures in the universe, had a personal hand in every single major event in the canon and all have their own superpower.
>>723237167Stop, you fool. The Watcher wasn't a modder made addition. It's officially by the devs. It's actually more canon than the downpour slugcats.
>>723236835>>723236910ULTRA GIGA LEGENDARY SPOILERS IN PIC REL DO NOT LOOK IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED WATCHERI only hate the retarded size reveal of ancients that goes against the original philosophy of the game and fucks up the whole worldbuilding once you look at everything again with this new context
>Tumblr crowd defends DownshitterNothing new
This game has a story? All I do is eat fruit and bugs. Sometimes mushrooms but it gets trippy.
>>723237264>all have their own superpowerso basically, they canonized Downpour despite trying to downplay its importance by saying it's just an alternate timeline
>>723237291Read the credits of it anon. There is no 'original devs' involved except James throwing in some lore and writing it. It was all done and build by completely new people that only used to pop shitty modded regions before working on it
It's good but the Watcher DLC is complete dogshit even with the latest update.
>>723237167I wish they didn't do the teleportation shit. Teleporting to a region I've already explored after visiting an echo is very annoying, and mapping out where the regions are relative to each other is much harder while teleporting around. Too easy to get lost in circles and travel around the same areas for the 5,000th time.
>>723229716base game is great. do not touch the DLCs
>hype up new dlc as a bunch of new areas>think its gonna be playing as a slugcat and going far out of the normal areas to a new iterator for help like the sattelite dishes hinted at in downpour>lol nope ur just a random goober going through portals to workshop maps that don't connect to the story at all with retarded enemies that dont interact with eachother
Downpour is fun if you don't really care about the theme of the original game and just want a bunch of new areas and endings but Watcher is just irredeemable dogshit that they literally rushed out unfinished and is just a bunch of workshop maps you portal around with insane enemy spam every screen that removes all of the "safari" fun.
>>723237573>Too easy to get lost in circles and travel around the same areas for the 5,000th time.I know why it's same areas and going in circles, look at any watcher region map. It's a straight line between portals and sometimes you have set of rooms that loop on themselves, so the only way to progress is only 1 pipe somewhere that you missed, out of 274848 other ones. It's terrible, and all watcher regions have this structure. Compare it to base game Industrial Complex with its interconnected layout, you can pick many different paths if you, for example, start at Outskirts gate and want to make your way to Shaded Citadel. In watcher there is always only 1 path, it fucks with replayability and gets tedious if get stuck somewhere dying over and over because you can't pick another way, since there is no other way
>>723231813based, I find chimney to be a fun and weirdly comfy area especially if you get chieftain
>>723237264That's not so bad. The differences in how slugcats play isn't unbelievable. The ecosystem clearly isn't completely natural. Hunter is a full canon vanilla slugcat and the heavily implied reason for him being sick is because he was rapidly manufactured by one of the AI to save Looks to the Moon. Most of the animals in the world are descended from bioengineered organisms and the slugcats aren't any different. I wouldn't say they a personal hand in every single event in the canon. A lot happens before they come about and a lot happens in between their stories.
Hunter was a mistake
the game's avg audience is like 14 years old so they're more acquiescent to the super sloppa dlc.
>>723237802I don't like how downpour makes Rain World more gamey and has terrible fanfic tier writing with superman slugcats but at least the regions were good. The concepts and lore in Watcher are more interesting but the gameplay is terrible and not fun, workshop mods sold as dlc. It had the potential and they fucked it up, twice. I was hopping 1.5 update would fix it
>>723237927NTA but Hunter is 90% the main predication on the fact that slugcats seem to be the semi most adaptable species as an iterator can literally make one with a controlled cancer timer and give it a mission that it will seek to complete. Most of their contributions to the world are only relevant to iterators as beyond that everything else in the world, at least the places you get to go, are 99% 5P's fault and what leads to rot also has nothing to do with any of the slugs.
>>723229716one of the greatest games of all time. probably the only game that I would consider a genuine work of art. i absolutely adore this shit. i havent really played the dlc much but i dont think its as bad as some of the other anons are letting on, its serviceable if you want a bit more gameplay but its nothing that special. probably not worth the price tag but if youre not fussed about the cost its fine i guess.
>>723233343man the graffiti in this game looks so fucking good. and the procedural animation is awesome. this game has to have the best visuals of all time. i read through a lot of the devlog a while back and its pretty detailed. so many interesting techniques were used to create the visuals in this game.
is the game fun or just atmospheric?
I enjoy the dlc slugcats a lot, but I don't consider consider them to be the "real game", like they're more of a separate for-fun mode.Anyone else feel the same?
>>723238778Yeah, I used to do terror attacks on scav tolls as Artificer when I was bored.
>>723238778That's 90% what they are, hell that's what most modded ones are. except inv>>723238715Do you think being at the bottom of the food chain and small is fun?
>>723238778Pretty much, Downpour is quite literally a mod and I treat it as such. Like any other mod it's just an auxiliary way to enjoy the game and not the definitive experience
>>723238715its very fun
The iterators don't make any sense. They were made to answer the question of how non organic beings can ascend. But the iterators are the only non organic organic beings. The Big Question is thus contrived. I can honestly see why 5P thought the answer was to just kill himself.
>>723239287That is prime taming opportunity anon, your white, their white, you can have a family
>>723239516No? It was how to help lesser creatures ascend
>>723239516Ascending was just killing yourself and the issue wasn't that they couldn't solve it, it was that the iterators themselves couldn't do it due to built in rules, so the big question is how an iterator can go around the rule to then kill themself. Only 1 ever technically does this in the original game but never shared the how and so 5P tried to do the same thing by creating a creature that could go around the rule and kill him. However, Moon then interrupted that plan since he was using too much of their shared water so now he has rot that will kill him but far too slowly and instead of actually being controllable it's just fucking spreading and ruining his systems entirely. They already figured out the whole ascension thing, they just can't do it themselves
>>723238146>It had the potential and they fucked it up, twiceThose two fuck ups came from the fact the devs have no confidence and/or care to make their own game anymore. Looking at it cynically, Rain World never had any true traditional game design to it, which could be seen as on purpose, but likely was an accident in how well it came together. They said themselves that they put a lot of focus on placing creatures and giving them behaviours that made sense for an animal trying to survive, which did a lot to make the areas you explore feel like actual places instead of a curated platforming gamer challenge. And that worked out great for the base game, but I don't think they can/want to do that again given part of the new changes have been to add more QoL features that only really seek to break immersion and make the game more accessible for new players. That's why the two new DLCs have just been the work of modders with miniscule and hand-wavey lore consultation from the main dev. He doesn't have confidence to make new areas (The Hunter was added in an update, and all he does is explore the same world with different spawns and a time limit), and likely doesn't want the current diehard fanbase to feel like the vision of the game has changed, so adding in what can explicitly be considered canon fanfiction, everyone can just handwave away that it doesn't fit the base game because it's not technically made by the main devs.Realistically speaking, Rain World shouldn't have had DLC in the first place because, even ignoring the canonization of mods, expanding the world eventually leads to a point where they can't realistically tip-toe around important points of its history. Mysteries will effectively be solved, and the world will feel just that little bit smaller.
>>723239821Death of the author etcetera etcetera
>>723232546Based on what I'm reading on the update log, all of this stuff is toggleable and/or completely optional, right? I agree that casual pandering sucks in general; I just want to know if I need to find a pre-update version to have the original experience.
>>723234435Glad you're having a good time. I played this like 2 years ago. At first, I nearly blew an artery out of frustration. I made a ton of progress but eventually got stuck in an area. I took a break from the game and eventually got back to it. After that, I really grew to love the game. Nothing else has offered me an experience quite like Rainworld. I haven't played the DLCs, but I heard they aren't the best. I might try them out eventually.
>>723241185yes its all optional
>>723241185There is a preset option that allows you to play with close to pre-patched settings, but there's still some small untoggleable things like a new edible food in darker water areas to make hibernation there a little easier. If you're fine with that, then just make sure to play it without the DLC installed, since that will add whole new regions that have literally nothing in them.
>>723230131Congrats.You made the same joke as this mumbling goober.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYQOx8sse3s&list=PLHxxHAzFmPblQNhCFqhXu_0-RZFTBXe6aFor a fraction of a second, across the corridor of time, your thought patterns synced up.Soak that in, enjoy that.
More indie slop that tries to be deep and is hard for the sake of being hard.
>>723242345It's not that hard though, and it's certainly not for the sake of being hard
>>723242345If you get filtered by Rain World it’s 100% because of impatience. Nothing in the game is actually hard in execution unless you mindlessly rush everything.
>>723244478Actually, mindlessly rushing everything is the solution. Most creatures are often so slow that you can literally just run past them and they're still processing that you're in their sight.
>>723244586Sure but that requires foresight, you can zip past a lot of encounters if you know where you're going on the map and how creatures will behave. Not really mindless. A new player would just get cornered or fucked up by pole plants if they just rush everything
>>723244586That’s only the solution if you already know what every creature does and where you need to go. It’s a death sentence otherwise.
>>723237065> bad interpretations on the karma systems (artificer play through and changes to the base game accession if you don’t get highest karma)>5P mischaracterization > moon mischaracterization > Hunter long legs as a dog shit concept for over explaining >over explaining things that were left up to interpretation>the gourmand being able to craft advance tech shit out of nothing > slug cats go from animals being in a ruined world (with the hunter being a minor exception with good reasons) to over powered OC slop that ranges from blatant fetish bait to Want to be gods>changed the rot from just a cancer to a multi dimensional entity > changed lore on the void worms
>>723237802>downpour is fun if you don’t like what made the base game special Man this sucks
