The most helpful thing to do would be to have a game without spiders by default but arachnophobia mode adds them. Exposure therapy.

I played WoW for the War Within release... but had been playing a bit prior to that to get accustomed to the game again, and I forgot I had turned on arachnophobia mode. So I was playing through the intro to TWW when the attack on Dalaran begins, and I'm wondering to myself, why are these lobstrok attacking the city? Wasn't until I landed on the ground below after being teleported that I realized I had it enabled and turned it off to see we had been killing nerubians the whole time.

Spiders are horrifying
>>
>>723443876
What's with this shitty modern fad of pretending to be afraid of spiders? Ten years ago I never heard anyone go "I'd love to play this game but can't because it has spiders". Nowadays people are flooding the steam forums if your game doesn't have an arachnophobia mode yelling about how it's impossible for them to even consider buying it without one.

I worry for the future of humanity. Courage is not the absence of fear, it's the ability to overcome it. The way to manage emotions and experiences is to live them and learn how to handle them. Instead the mentality of certain people currently is to avoid experiences, meaning they never learn or grow.

>Exposure therapy is a technique in behavior therapy to treat anxiety disorders. Exposure therapy involves exposing the patient to the anxiety source or its context. Doing so is thought to help them overcome their anxiety or distress. Numerous studies have demonstrated its effectiveness in the treatment of disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and specific phobias.

Unironically facing spiders in video games and VR and such is actual psychological therapy for arachnophobia. By avoiding these experiences the current media power holders are ensuring people don't conquer their fears. Perhaps intentionally?

It's like how areas that have removed peanuts from schools because of peanut allergies then have an increased rate of peanut allergies because kids' immune systems aren't exposed to them. Either these people are so incompetent their attempts to help are actively harmful, or they're deliberately being malicious.
>>
>>723445207
Mental illnesses are popular and profitable these days. Rather than trying to succeed in life it's easier to get special treatment for being pathetic.
>>
>>723444348
Spiders in the garden are good because they eat more harmful insects. A mosquito will give you west nile virus. A spider will eat the mosquito that would have given you west nile virus.

Certain people beg for special treatment because it makes them feel special and gives them power over others. The actual specifics don't matter, it's all about making others cater to them.

Why does it bother you? Does colorblind options cause you this pain too? What about difficulty sliders? Character customization? Customizable loadouts? Gun/player skins? Advocating for less options is retarded and leads to stagnation in games. Y'all complained about brown and bloom for decades then cry when things get too colorful. You just hate videogames.

I'm an arachnophobe but the only Vidya spider that scared me was the Skyrim frostbite spider that drops from the ceiling and and attacked me like a jump scare. EDF Spiders are so goofy but the web climbing Retarius spiders that drag you into their web unnerve me so I always kill them first. NPC's also love to get tangled up and die in their threads too so it's a good strategy anyway.

>>
>>723445003
Such options take development time and resources. That same time and those same resources, no matter how minor and slight, can be better used to making the game more complete, optimized, or interesting. It is a waste to cater to a social contagion for a group of people pretending to be scared of something, particularly when that thing they are pretending to be scared of is obviously going to be in the game.

It would be like putting in a "Thalassophobia" mode for Subnautica or Barotrauma. Sure, all they have to do is turn off the render for the water, and then optionally make the O2 meter a "flight" meter for the people who are "really" afraid of deep water, but it is a waste and pointless to do even if it only takes 2 minutes to implement. It ruins the theme of the game, it contributes nothing to the gameplay, it wastes time, and the stupid fuck heads asking for such a mode knew exactly what they were buying in the first place.

I am an arachnophobe but spiders in videogames never triggered that, or at least it triggered it only during horror segments/games... which isn't that the point?
Having a huge detailed spider that's skitter towards you, if I'm playing a horror game I WANT to be horrified, no?
I don't get it, maybe it's because I also think spiders look cool in spite of them freaking me out when met in real life but I really wish people going "OMG SO SCARY SPIDER PLS ARACHNOPHOBIA MODE" would get bitten by a thousand of black widows.

only annoying thing about it is that like 99% of the time the spiders are killable enemies so you can try and squish your fear
but having cynophobia and every fucking dog in any game is always some retarded "hecking pet this pupperiiiino very good boy you cant kill them or harm them in any way btw :)" is annoying

I wish gaming companies realized this and started having spiders in their offices again. A healthy spider could eat dozens of bugs EACH DAY. Nowadays gamedev is full of women who'll scream and call for an exterminator if they see one. Hence the recent games release as filthy bug-filled mess.

A lot of our current life is dictated by soulless automatons, anon.
Gardens, for example, should be built to attract pollinators and helpful bugs, rather than being generic green grass to be cut exactly at 2.571 inches NO CLOVERS ALLOWED ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!
In my town we used to have so many dragonflies, so many ladybugs, lighting bugs and even ants... now we have stinkbugs, mosquitoes, we have earwigs and I've started to see some roaches too.
We still have some centipedes, the type with the spindly long legs that eat other bugs... but I really miss how things used to be, being 32 it's like I saw a glimpse of a world that looked so good and I couldn't wait to be in it and then for some reason everything started rotting into mush.

Arachnophobes are the whiniest phobics out there and bitch and complain more than any other phobic I've seen. I've got entomophobia and going through the blood clinic in fallout 4 which is swarming with giant mosquitoes gave me sever anxiety but I cleared it out because it's a video game and I'm not a bitch.

I never understand why people bring up height phobia in games. You can't tell distance in games retard, you don't have depth perception, what the fuck would you be afraid of? Even in VR games the max focal distance is like 2 meters. Who's afraid of being 2 meters up?
>>
>>723460752
Its just fad to be currently "conscious" about. It'll pass. Hopefully.
I have literal, actual homophobia thanks to bad childhood trauma. Logically I dont give a fuck what people do behind locked doors, but being in the presence of someone I know is gay makes my stomach churn and I get very anxious. Its a visceral reaction I cannot control even though I know it makes no sense. But bringing that up EVER in today's "inclusive" society would be a social suicide and would likely get me fired instantly. Sadly, this also ruins most of the new games for me.
>>
>>723460973

You lack depth perception in games, making fear of heights much more tolerable. VR games are a lot worse.

Depends on headset. The cheap/early ones with tiny screen are very limited. The never ones can have up to 200m simulated focal length.

Then wouldn't the knowledge of the object isn't real is enough to not trigger it?
Like I get it with VR, since it covers a lot more of more of your senses but does a flat 2D plane can really trigger phobia response? Unless if the screen is really large or something. Or is it just that easy to trick human brain into believing something?

Yes it is. There's a classical psychological experiment where you sit in front of a table, your hand extended out under it. A fake arm is put on the table right above your own arm, then both are touched in same positions couple times. When the fake arm is smashed with a hammer, pretty much everyone jolts and many even register physical pain in their arm just from the expectation.

If your brain expects pain seeing a hand smashed that you know isnt "real" just because circumstance is similar enough, I dont see why brain wouldnt get scared of a thing it fears even if you know it isnt "real" just because circumstance is similar enough.

I think spiders are pretty cool and are staple enemy in videogames yet not many if them get them right. They are usually the same as the rest of enemies except it deals poison damage and can incapacitate with webs. Catering to arachnophobiafags makes Devs to include less and less spiders

It's all virtue signaling and similar performative behaviors. Coddled adult children are too spoiled to even consider overcoming hurdles in safe environments.

so just because it's more common that means we should exclude the ones that are less common as if they don't matter or matter less? That's literally discrimination, my guy. Jumping spiders are cool as hell, I'm happy for you anon. They are surprisingly smart for such small things. They can formulate rudimentary plans for hunting and navigation (like taking strategic detours to get to best possible ambush location) and use tactics like mimicking sounds to lure prey. >Does colorblind options cause you this pain too?
Colorblind options are the easiest fucking filter to make ever and 1 in 12~ people are affected by color blindness, it's also something that often directly impacts gameplay and you can't really do anything to get over it. Arachnophobia is like 3-6% of the population, it takes more effort to make a new model, and a even lesser number is has it to the point where it's "crippling" and would actually affect their willingness to play the game.

It's less so "WAHHHH MORE OPTIONS!" and more so "Why are the devs wasting manpower dedicating to what is honestly a extremely small section of people who could honestly do with the exposure therapy."
Where's Ophidiophobia, Cynophobia, Astraphobia etc... where's the filters for all of these very common phobias?
It's just a complete waste added because fags pretending to have "arachnophobia" will complain.
I have spheksophobia to the point where I will shut down in public if a wasp even flies near me and I shut up and take it in video games and it's made me feel amazing when I conquered my fear for vidya wasps (still hate irl wasps). Arachnophobia fags are just pussies.
