Other megas are painful or dangerous in exchange for the power associated with the form which it why its temporary. This...its just weird. Starmie's dex entries go on and on about the core and the lights it shines. They should have gone in that direction. Imagine a Starmie with a gem core thats a cannon like Mega Zygarde. Or how about the regeneration goes haywire with all the surplus energy and Starmie has a ton of fucked up arms

It's no longer just about making a Pokémon look meaner, it's about giving a new spin on their design, so they have some sort of gimmick compared to their normal counterpart. I think that was a big mistake and this is what regional varients were made for instead. Not all new megas are like this mind you, and the ones who stick to this previous design philosophy aren't getting bitched about much like Froslass

In X/Y it was just your standard power of friendship shit. And frankly the ORAS additions are kind of weird and don't really fit the tone of the games at all. I haven't read the ZA pokedex entries so I have no idea of they kept doing it in this game.
