What went wrong?
big emphasis on crafting
>>723612373>you now remember that time when bethesda first tried to introduce paid mods and the backlash was so strong that they broke the emergency glass and announced fallout 4
>>723612373mass effect dialogue
>>723612554mass erffect is bad?
>>723612373>voiced protagonist, so only 4 options per dialogue>blade runner story but made by retards >every single NPC is ugly and stupid>settlement building needs mods to be not-shit because even if you put 300 turrets and solid walls all around the place raiders will just autospawn inside the settlement anyways because fuck you>need a mod to kill Preston Garvey and end the infinite procedural quest spam>the Railroad sucks>the BoS are retarded>the Institute is somehow even more retarded than the BoS, why even try to conquer the surface when they were a literal fucking utopia that could thrive forever?
dumb plot elements>Cryo pods/time skip>Synths>"I GOT TO FIND MY BABY"
>>723612632i liked mass effect 1 a lot but the dialogue wheel was really bad. half the time shepard was much more aggressive than the option indicated and often the dialogue choices were just meaningless. i prefer good old dialogue treest. only played mass effect 1
fuck you. the paragon & renegade system is kino
>>723612373>lack of unique NPCs>lack of towns with bethesda made unique NPCs and questspeople dont like most things being procedural, they want some unique NPCs with deliberate design. especially in a game that is a theme park it >voiced protag People want to RP and imagine their characters personality and beliefs not have the game tell them it, this is bethesdas game philosophy of wanting to tell a story vs players wanting to roleplay and "play" around in the game with their imagination.>>723612445crafting was great in 4. Yes they did neglect some non crafting stuff to much though but thats not craftings fault that you were dissatisfied with it.
>>723612668fucking racist pig
>>723612373>writing is distractingly bad>only 2 towns, 3 if you count the vault that only has 1 fucking quest>settlements have literally no purpose
The biggest problem i have with Bethesda games is that they are advertised as being open world and letting you play however you want while experience a fantasy story which sounds like the perfect semi sandbox game, but in reality they are very rigid theme park games where the game is designed to give you the illusion of choice and put you on an on rails experience to go through a specific story. I feel like there is a middle ground between sandbox and having a story you want to tell and Bethesda doesnt even try to go for the middle ground. Fallout 4 was probably one of their best games yet at feeling like more of a sandbox and having multiple endings with faction alliances though.
>>723612929I have nothing against Garvey except that he forces quests into your journal without your consent. For raping my pipboy, he must die
>>723612937Setllements have a purpose, as an adhesive farm
>>723612373brutally casualised
>>723612373Fallout 3 was pretty solid. Fallout NV took F3 base game and introduced more weapons and RPG elements, which made the game entertaining. Then F4 appeared with Bethesda throwing most of the RPG elements out of the window, they changed the gritty art direction of F3 for something goofy, some New Vegas mechanics were replaced by a more generic equivalent, for example the weapon modding, the story was a rehash of F3 but worse.
>>723612998>he forces quests into your journal without your consentYou realize you can choose to ignore the bitch. Leave a quest unfinished and he won't make another peep about a settlement. A general doesn't have to listen to his subordinates.
>>723613575that won't unrape your pipboy
>>723613575>Leave a quest unfinishedThat's not comfy or satisfying
>>723612373you can beat the game in less than 4 hours
>>723612373Huge wasted potential. It could have been something great if Bethesda wasn't so retarded and incompetent.
>>723612632its good, but you need the writing skills of 2007 Bioware to pull it off. look at nu-bioware games, its also shit now
I just finished the game after about 31 hours, for whatever reason the game takes a nose dive in quality after you meet Shaun in the institute for the first time. It’s like all wind is taken out of the games sails. I ended up just sprinting to the end via Brotherhood of Steel ending, which was kino imo. 7/10 game, the anon likening it to a theme park is accurate. It never really feels like a lived in world, just a sloppish albeit very addictive first 25 hrs where you’re running around from one npc to the next.
>>723613823How?
>>723616001I think its fun to mod, forget the main story, and treat it like a sandbox. I always mess with the settlement system, thats probably the best part about the game. The shooting seems fun too
>>723612373>generic mmo tier fetch quests galore>makes pip boy fucked up, after it being perfect in fo3>crafting is too much, it needs to be reined in>bad balancing of enemies and weapons>base building and anything related to it>combat feel outdated, at least not as Bad as in fo3, but still>taking out RPG elements in an RPG>weird lore choices>wanking to BoS again
>>723616159The shooting was decent for sure, gameplay in general was like 100x better than any other Bethesda game I’ve played
>>723612373Pretty much everything. The story is bad, the art direction is bad, the music is bad, the characters (except for Nick) are bad, the guns are bad. The game is Borderlands in the Fallout universe and the only thing I really like about is how they did power armor
>>723612373lack of harmonicasharmonicas are the backbone of modern fallout
played a bunch recently and came away with 3 central complaints >not enough good quests >not enough good dungeons >the character progression is super rushed and you end up way OP with infinite supplies when youve barely scratched the surface of the game the over world of the game is insanely good though, in my opinion, quite dense with detail and very vertical. it feels like they spent all of development on the over world then ran out of time/resources for the dungeons/interior spaces I actually liked crafting and settlement building. I liked that all the junk in the world was actually useful and not just for show, and this aspect at least kept me motivated as the aforementioned issue of progression set in and loot became less and less rewardingbasically, theres a lot about the game i really enjoyed and there's actually a lot of this game i still haven't even seen yet, because progression shits the bed so badly even on the hardest difficulty, and theres no good quests that take you through the world with a good narrative, so i lose motivation to keep going.
>>723612373people have listed all the other issues already but at the end of the day i can't even get immersed in the setting>npc lives in sheetmetal shacks full of holes>in bostonjust think of that for a second. even if they fixed the other broken systems the entire setting is devoid of any thought and any care or any respect for the player. i hate it.
Enemies are all bullet sponges. And they level up with you so no matter how powerful your gun is they can still tank 10 headshots before dying
>>723616442they had the same issue in oblivion, literally fixed in fo3 and Skyrim, just to fuck it up again in fo4
>>723612373a game with the first signs of downfall that lead to 76 and starfield.
>>723616001>for whatever reason the game takes a nose dive in quality after you meet Shaun in the institute for the first time. Because that's where the story ends, and it's clear they wrote themselves into a corner and didn't know what to do with the rest of the game after that. You find your missing son in this foreign nightmare future world, and he's already an old man who's lived a fuller life than you have. Okay, mission accomplished. Your character's journey is now over.>Well dad, will you join me in reshaping this hellscape? Or decline and join one of the other factions? Why would I do that? A week and a half ago I was planning the next stage of my life after my military discharge with a family, and now I'm living in this blasted hellscape with all my friends, family, and even distant acquaintances long dead. I have nothing, know nothing, and I don't care what happens to this place. I can't go back, and I have no personal stake in whatever happens next.
>>723616442>>723616521i had literally the opposite experience in OG oblivion the difficulty spirals out of control completely at higher levels, whereas in fallout 4 enemies become complete push overs by the time youve explored like 15-20% of the content. i genuinely wish the enemies scaled with you better because the game becomes so trivial so fast that you lose motivation because you annihilate everything on sight instantly and have 200 stim packs. i would love it if enemies were MORE spongy
>>723616714depends on the enemies. fo4 is so all over the place, that you can kill a deathclaw with a few pistol shots, while legendary enemies can take multiple 50 cal sniper rifle bullets to the head and it's just a scratch
It started the downfall of Bethesda.>F4: DUDE YOU CAN BUILD SETTLEMENTS AFTER GRINDING FOR ITEMS>F76: DUDE YOU CAN BUILD SETTLEMENTS AFTER GRINDING FOR ITEMS >Starfield: DUDE YOU CAN BUILD SETTLEMENTS AFTER GRINDING FOR ITEMS
>>723612373Making all the romancable girls shit
>>723616895it would be fine, but the grinding for items is just a bit too much and takes too much time for no reason, just to waste your time and doesn't feel satisfying. Also makes Caps and vendors useless
>>723616316>even if they fixed the other broken systems the entire setting is devoid of any thought and any care or any respect for the player. i hate it.The very idea that the entire Eastern seaboard isn't an unbroken sheet of glass, let alone Boston and the area around NYC, is so retarded and disregarding of the setting's own story that I can't take any eastern Fallout seriously. The entire point of the setting is that the Old World was annihilated, and now a new frontier rises in the West, like the archetypal story of America itself. Going back to the east coast makes no sense even on a thematic level. Don't even get me started on the sheer amount of asspulls Bethesda took with the lore in order to justify everything in California somehow also being present in New England.
the legendary system made no sense>kill a legendary deathclaw >get a ghoul slayers rolling pin>kill a legendary radroach>get a two shot plasma rifle
>>723617069what part of that confuses you?
it tries too hard to be discount mass effect and other games popular during its development mechanics wise, instead of building up from where fo3 left off.
>>723617069The legendaries themselves are fine if not lacking in variety. The real problem is the drop rates in vanilla were completely fucked.>60% for melee>20% for ranged>20% for armor pieces
>>723617069the borderlands tier loot drops were just a bad thing to have. should be set weapons in specific places like in FO3 and NV
>>723617725not to defend the misbalance in 4 but i could go for a more melee heavy fallout
>>723618431That's another thing they fucked up hard. They made melee even shittier than it was in 3. Fucking how?
>>723617732I get what they were going for they just didn't pull it off
>>723618598this is the story of many things in the game. probably good ideas implemented poorly
>widely popular and fiscally successful game hated only by low IQ autists and template thread writersNot a damn thing went wrong.
>>723612668>settlement building needs mods to be not-shit because even if you put 300 turrets and solid walls all around the place raiders will just autospawn inside the settlement anyways because fuck youIt's actually dumber than that.Attacks basically don't happen as long as you meet the defense threshold, meaning ironically the more defenses you have, the less you need to use them.So the game literally cucks you out of 'lol 10 deathclaws raid your base!' because at worst it's going to be a handful of raiders and even THEY won't show up if you actually have turrets.
>>723619363Its not a bad game but it has a lot of flaws that prevent it from reaching its full potential
>>723616714>in OG oblivion the difficulty spirals out of control completely at higher levels, whereas in fallout 4 enemies become complete push overs by the time youve explored like 15-20% of the content. i genuinely wish the enemies scaled with you better because the game becomes so trivial so fast that you lose motivation because you annihilate everything on sight instantly and have 200 stim packs. i would love it if enemies were MORE spongyFO4 has 2 enemy types, level-gated enemies and level SCALED ones. The level-gated enemies are pushovers because even at level 80, most will be level 10 variants that you can 1 hit KO.But the level-scaled ones INFINITELY scale in HP, while your damage caps out around level 30 or so. Yeah so that's great design.
>>723617069>Kill legendary mythic deathclaw at level 100>lucky light-leather shoulder pad>Kill legendary radroach at level 5>Explosive automatic pipe pistol (will literally out-DPS any non-legendary weapon in the game)
>>723612373Bethesda doesn't care about the Fallout ip and just sees it as another cash cow. Unfortunately the fallout show doing "well" means fallout 4 is the only kind of fallout we will ever see.
>>723619363The dissonance between realistic graphics and every mechanic being absurdly unrealistic is the problem they need to fix. Stylise the graphics or make the mechanics more grounded. The current status quo is unbearable.
>>723619363You're right, Fallout 4 is a great game. It's just that the dialogue system, weapon progression, art-style, enemy balancing, quest design, environmental storytelling, lore consistency and factions are all worse than previous game. Great game though.
>>723612632Mass effect is okay at best and you have to accept that you're playing a pre established role as a character who is already a hero and no matter what you do, you're still gonna be space cop. Fallout 4 gives you like 10 seconds of dialogue about one of the characters in the game and then you play with your son for a bit and then you get bombed. There's no dialogue that kind of tells you who you are, there's no real establishment that happens. But it still tries to replicate the idea of Mass effect. It just doesn't work
>>723612373It's just a boring nothing game. Boring nothing story, boring nothing characters, boring nothing open world. The only redeeming feature is having pretty good dungeons but the bare bones proto looter shooter mechanics are so vacuous it doesn't matter because it's not like there's anything interesting to find.
>>723616312I do think that the crafting system should be praised because I think that turning random junk into actual weapons is a lot more apocalypse feeling than any game that was before that. It feels like there's an actual use to picking up junk instead of just selling it or putting it in your inventory and forgetting about it until you reach weight cap .But it absolutely is a case of you don't even need the junk weapons towards even close to the middle of the game because you've probably already found something better than what they are. Almost everything drops a legendary and half the junk guns in the game are junk themselves. Which is understandable but it's also kind of tough to play using just junk when there's so many other opportunities to pick up better weapons
>>723612373It's pretty fundamentally flawed to have a pretty good chance at finding a weapon that'll outclass every weapon in the game, within the first 30 minutes of gameplay.Seriously why does a wounding/explosive pipe pistol or 10mm pistol do more DPS than the fucking minigun, gatling laser or assault rifle?
>>723616895The funny thing is that in Fallout 76 it's actually been improved. And I think that works well there. Having other people go to your base and check things out and even buy things from you is pretty fun actually. And I will say that not to sound like a shill but Fallout first subs can get stuff like vaults that they can customize. If you don't take the lore of the game seriously, it's a pretty fun experience. In starfield, base building was completely retarded honestly. It didn't really benefit you outside of giving you a few materials that you probably already had
saars...
>>723613572The weapon modding was such a disappointment. I remember thinking it was really fucking cool that you could turn a plasma pistol into a plasma rifle while at level 1 if you had the scrap items to do it meaning you could potentially get higher tier stuff earlier than you should, but the entire weapon sandbox suffered for it. Instead of having unique shotguns, snipers and machine guns you could find they were all thrown together to one catch all piece of shit weapon you could mod to your hearts content but in doing so it took away so much from the sandbox. Same with pipe weapons. Killing 20 raiders and then finding 20 different types of pipe weapons instead of actual weapons you could potentially use in the game just felt boring. There's only like twenty weapons in that game too because it feels like Bethesda thought that with modding weapons there could be over 300.Removing degradation felt like it made everything in the game worthless too. At least in 3/NV you needed to pick up an enemies weapon once in a while to repair your current weapon which added some layers to the gameplay. Removing that mechanic just made every weapon you come across worthless since they're not worth the caps to haul back and sell, breaking them down is useless if you don't care for crafting (and if you do you can usually buy whatever you need), and you're never going to USE the weapon over what you have by the midpoint of the game so they're just useless.Which is a shame because the combat (when enemies aren't just bullet sponges) was decent and felt satisfying occasionally. I still remember trying to get to Diamond City at Level 1 with nothing but an upgraded Scoped Hunting Rifle and a dozen bullets. Probably the most fun I had with that game along with the Silver Shroud quest.
