Why don't we get weird vidya like this anymore? Certainly not in a AAA capacity
>>
>>723749761
Wasn't Killer 7 a specific case though where Nintendo commissioned five games from Capcom and only one of them wasn't a total gamble? RE4 I think I might be mixing up what really happened.
>>
>>723749761
AAA wasn't a thing in the PS2
big games could experiment since they had lower budgets
nowadays AA games are scarce and there's less things to experiment
>>
Because "AAA" games do not take risks, they are designed to be as formulaic as possible to appeal to the lowest common denominator and guarantee safe profits.

Indies are the only games truly doing anything new and different.
>>
>>723749761
Because the game sold 45k copies around the world. It didn't even make back the translation costs.
>>
>>723749761
Did you buy it when you came out? No? That's why.
>>
Weird games come out every month and if you just browse Steam or hang out in certain places you'll find them naturally.
>>
>>723750012
AAA was a thing, but the concept of AAA changed.
It would be fairer to call modern AAA games "AAAAAAAAAAA" games in comparison
>>
>>723750768
Alternatively, soem faggy youtuber will make a video about it explaining how it's a HIDDEN GEM or a MASTERPIECE, and that will worm its way into your recs
>>
>>723750768
>Weird games come out every month
Yeah but they need to be... you know, actually good too
>>
>>723749761
K7 wasn't a cheap production. I don't know why you think a game that's fully dubbed with expensive actors, contains expensive hand drawn animated cutscenes, and a huge number of one time use assets was cheap.
>>
>>723751340
K7 isn't a good game. The designers knew this and one of the first powers is a auto-aim.
>>
>>723751340
Most weird games aren't exactly known for compelling mechanics
>>
>>723750369
Basically this. No one wants to lose money making a Killer7.

That being said, Killer7 is definitely a unique experience, there's no other game really like it, so if anyone in the thread hasn't played it I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

>>723749973
Something like that happened but I can't remember if Killer7 was part of that or not. There were other games in that group and if I recall correctly they weren't even bad just so mediocre I can't even remember any of them.
>>
>>723751364
Which is why OP called it AAA
>>
>>723751447
>K7 isn't a good game
Wrong
>>
>>723749761
anyone got any other weird fever dream-ish type games i might like if i really enjoyed this one? visual novels are fine too. just give me something interesting.
>>
>>723749973
>>723751647

Killer7, RE4, P.N.03, Viewtiful Joe, and Dead Phoenix (cancelled)
>>
>>723752049
Really? Wow, out of those at like Killer7, Viewtiful Joe and RE4 are all good. Is RE4 the only one that made money or something?
>>
>>723751928
The gameplay is dogshit.
>>
>>723753210
Wrong again, bucko
>>
>>723749761
YOU BASTARD
>>
We just got a weird AAA game where you play as a lighthouse thoughbeit
>>
>>723749761
It's def on my list of unique games to explore. I had it on Gamecube but I ragequit at the level where you're outdoors vs. the giant heaven-smiles. Don't know exactly why I was struggling to hit them, just got frustrated lol.
>>
>>723749761
6th generation was the peak of the experimentation era due to no over-inflated budgets, no kowtowing and dicksucking to shareholders, and the producers and executives didn't care about what the game would be like as long as it sold money. All of this while the price range was at around $30-50 max which made it accessible to a lot of people, especially when the economy was doing pretty good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgYGYtAYLS8
This game for example centers around fighting and defeating enemies by launching them in the air and juggling them like in Devil May Cry while controlling three characters. It was made by Konami in 2005.
You need all of these factors and environment to bring that back. The closest thing is the few indie and AA devs currently trying out 3D game development.
>>
A real shame Killer7 flopped hard. It would've been cool if the figures shown in the instruction manual came out.
I have the complete collection of the comics made for the game, but they're awful.
>>
>>723753764
If there was a single change I could make for Killer7 it would be better aiming. Totally understand the frustration.

I feel like more experimental games like this would have broader appeal if they were at least easier so more people didn't bounce off them.
>>
>>723753764
Fair, I don't know why but the hitboxes on those guys are really shitty. I ended up just using Kevin to run up to them, bait their falling attack, then use his backflip to run away. They were a real pest on Killer8 difficulty.
>>
>>723749761
It's a fucking proto indie game, the same quiality as Cruelty Squad or any other shit with flashy presentation
>>
>>723749761
Game development is solved at this point. Everything uses the same control scheme and sames photorealistic UE5 aesthetic. It just won't sell anymore, and this game even didn't, despite it being a masterpiece.
>>723751940
The Silver Case is made by the same guy, and I genuinely like it better, check it out
>>
>>723756520
The game was promoted as one of the Capcom Five
>>
>>723756651
Killer 7 and especially PN03 don't look like finished games, more like something they should make fast get nintedo money for this desperate contract. Crapcom did it many times, like with DeadRising4
>>
>>723756520
It seems like you're being deliberately disingenuous.

Anyone can emulate Killer7 these days so if people are interested they can check it out. I'd also recommend SuperGreatFriend's LP since he goes over a lot of the related material like the comics mentioned by >>723754424
>>
>>723750813
"AAA" was not a thing, the term came into conception with MW2's unprecedented spend.
>>
>>723754424
>It would've been cool if the figures shown in the instruction manual came out.
Killer7 itself was supposed to do that with the remaining characters from The Silver Case's manual, but they changed it mid-production because Suda thought he'd lose the rights to his ongoing video game universe somehow.
>>
>>723751940
>>723756645
What the other guy said, just play Suda's work from The Silver Case(/Moonlight Syndrome, but you don't speak Japanese) onwards. They're all kind of, sort of, part of the same continuity.

>>
Indieslop is full of "weird shit".
>>723750649
I did. I read some 4 out of 10 reviews and thought it sounded awesome (it was).
>>
>>723751447
Huh? What skill is that? I've played through this game like 5 times. Coulda used this for Ayami Brackburd fight.
>>
>>723760007
Auto Lock-on. You can get it for any character by cranking their stats all the way up. But for some reason, as if Con wasn't broken enough he gets it when every stat is merely level 4. It instantly locks-on to a Smile's critical spot. So sadly, it doesn't work for the annoying bosses.
It's also a default feature of easy mode when playing the japanese version. I tried it and the game was unplayably trivial, I had to switch difficulty to bloody.

but why did they make a lightgun game for a console with no lightgun
why did it never get ported to the wii
>>
>>723750649
My friend did as a kid and we played it together. Good times. Opened my mind to a lot of shit. Favorite game ever to this day
>>
Killer7 is proof games are art
>>
I have not played a single triple A game since elden ring
>>
>that guy who doesn't buff every Smith instead if maxing a few
You didn't beat or get the game.
>>
THIS IS TOO EASY
>>
>>723753613
You're FUCKED
>>
>>723761201
>not maxing out a select few, so that on replays you can upgrade different smiths for a different experience
>>
>>723751447
I think it's fine. the puzzles were kind of weak though. the final chapter requiring you to listen to tapes and use pen/paper to answer a bunch of questions was pretty bad design.
>>
>>723750768
This. The only thing that changed is that they're not being spoonfed to you by IGN.
Whenever someone says that "x isn't getting made anymore," they're wrong. It is. Every single genre from the past 30 years still gets regular releases.
The only thing that changed is that Game Informer doesn't talk about them.
>>
sometimes when I'm traversing a staircase I do Dan Smith's/Con Smith's walking animation.

Because you didn't buy it back then and continue buying slop now.
>>
>>723761810
For some reason in the Japanese version, these are different. Not all of them, but a big one I remember is Garcian's code being changed from "Eagle" to "Elbow". I don't know why they did that.
>>
>you can get to the end of the game without fully upgrading Mask de Smith
>>
>>723752146
RE4 was a huge success and a major influence on game design moving forward versus the other games just doing their own thing.
>>
I like to consider Lost Kingdoms as part of the Capcom 5.

The Capcom 5:
-Viewtiful Joe
-PN03
-killer7
-Devil May Cry
-Resident Evil 4
-Lost Kingdoms

>>723749761
The jews in charge deliberately stifle innovation
>>
>>723749761
>Why don't we get weird vidya like this anymore?
Because game journalists will slap an extremely low review score onto them when they can't feasibly describe the game as "like [current popular game] with a hint of [other current popular game]".
Unless it shows trannies and the continued destruction and apathy of the united states being good things, then they're willing to fellate it for a small tithing.
>>
>>723766348
>Slap an empty sky, an empty Underground, and Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts to breath of the wild
>outsource the dumbest story ever made
>charge $70 for it
>Journalists collectively give it the highest score for a game ever
We don't hate game journalists enough.

You will love Deadly Premonition
>>
>>723749761
what the fuck was curtis' problem?
is cunny really that good?
>>
Killer 7 is probably the most letdown I've been by a game ever. It's massively hyped up so I expected something good, but the game play was complete ass. It was an absolute chore to finish. Yeah the story and visuals were really cool, but if it isn't fun to play then it is a shit game. Just watch a let's play of it instead for anyone curious.
>>
>>723767257
If anyone is going to go this route, I think SuperGreatFriend's Let's Play of Killer7 is the best and most comprehensive one online.

You might still want to check out the game first to see if you're okay with the gameplay, but since it is so different from everything else it's understandable that people bounce off it. It's basically a rail shooter but there are multiple rails that you control the movement on, RPG elements for the characters, and the shooting rewards being able to hit small weakpoints very quickly (which wouldn't be so bad if the controls were better but desu it's not the best shooting gameplay in the world).
>>
>>723751940
Juggernaut on PS1
>>
>>723768226
Oh yeah, Juggernaut is a hell of a fever dream. Even worst gameplay than Killer7 though.
>>
>>723764979
could have been a capcom 6 if Gotcha Force didn't advertise so poorly.
