It has many problems and it's shit compared to DS1 in terms of regular movement and combat due to how slow it is, with certain exceptions that are pure gold (backstabs and fog wall denial), but it's sovl when you actually learn to play around SM

The enemy placement and encounter design, ai behaviors, etc is better across the board in scholar. Take undead crypt for example. The vanilla game doesn't even feature skeletons. No skeletons in a crypt? Just retarded. And they made the bell gimmick much more important. In the vanilla game the ghost wraiths will just spawn regardless if the bells get rung, but in scholar you can destroy the bells to prevent a harder enemy from being spawned and ganking you. But the layout and design compensates for this by having more stones blocking your path you have to cut through and adds skeleton enemies to balance fighting and moving through the area, while also not ringing the bells in the process. It's simultaneously a more thoughtful and fair area, while also being more challenging if you screw up and lets the wraiths spawn. This is consistent with most areas in scholar as a whole. There's also more subtle changes than just enemies, like secrets, environmental decoration, etc that give each area more soul.

Why don't they just patch the game where they remove the ADP stat and auto set it to like 25, so people aren't forced to waste levels on it?
They can also make it so you don't get hit while going through fog doors and once you open a regular door it stays open unless You close it.
The hollow HP diminish is annoying, because you're forced to waste a ring slot, but I don't really care about it.

The invisible bandits in the foggy part of Shaded Woods, which in the vanilla game don't appear anywhere else as they were clearly made for that area? Now they're in other parts of Shaded Woods where they're clearly visible, and they're just NPC fights

There are now Desert Sorceress in Dragleic Castle for some reason, where they look completely out of place

The falconers with broken walking animations are now littered around Shaded Woods and Brightstone Cove where they are on full display, genuinely bizzarre shit

There's a copy of the Executioner's Chariot horse in the middle of Drangleic Castle for some reason, even though previously this was a completely unique enemy to the boss fight

There's a random, single Heide's old knight in the middle of Shrine of Amana

They removed the giant deformed enemies (whatever they're called) at the bottom of Sinner's Rise, and added a copy of the Flexile Sentry that doesn't even fit through the elevator door lmao

I'm sure there's more but I haven't played Scholar in a while. It's just so obvious that changed a bunch of shit for the sake of it so that they could say Scholar was different enough, even if it made no fucking sense

It stops being a setpiece and atmospheric decoration when it's gone 5 seconds after walking into the area and what you're left with is just an empty barren room. Having this menacing skeleton dragon loom over you while you're exploring is way better for atmosphere and builds some tension till it finally attacks you. Giving the player "a bunch of steps" already gives the area way more depth and meaning that it ever had before where it was just a long hallway with no purpose. The key it leaves behind than rewards the player to circle around the cyclops and prevent getting insta killed and makes the boss run easier. Rewarding exploration and puzzle solving in an area that before was nothing but just killing enemies in a long hallway.

The whole game felt disconnected maybe because it wasn't spearheaded by the same guy who makes sure the game is coherent. Gameplay wise, it makes sense to bring back an early boss as a miniboss and they give you a nice open space to fight it in. Better than the Flexile Sentry at the bottom of Sinner's Rise in Scholar that can't even fit through the elevator doorway and is easily cheesed
