The problem is that you unironically need 120+ IQ to get this game.
That's why it went over the heads of so many gamers.

>You were putting yourself in danger to save me and I started shooting at you and you shot back
>this makes you a terrible person, you need to be better men, give me more free money
Finally playing this game for myself made me realise that all along everything written about this game was typed by shit coloured hands. You have to unironically be a nigger to not side with Walker. People who think this game was any kind of coherent moral picture also think Black Hawk Down was based third worldist resistance rather than a chimpout against the hand that was feeding.

Really, Walker simply did nothing wrong. Also the plot doesn't really work but whatever, making games is hard. I liked 'Yager' (the levels set in the nice green areas anyway).

>>723884597
Unstated starting point is that browns are going to be psychotically violent and consider themselves morally unassailable and this is just meant to go unquestioned. The random nigger who gets his clan to shoot you with AKs even though you're a rescue mission, he never has to ask himself if he feels like a hero. Of course he is.

>>723884341
>commit war crime
>game calls you out for it
>"bro I didn't have choice, I was just following orders" (literally most common defense used by war criminals during trials)
This is literally the point of the game, but you're too low IQ to realize it even as you type it out.
>>
>>723883929
>game tries to deliver a message
>but game also gives you the option to reject the message (shooting Marlon Brando at the mirror scene)
I shot Marlon then had Walker went back home. Great game.

Europe and the UN demanded the US go in because an African country was being an African country and local warlords were starving the populace. The US then made the same mistake as in Vietnam and treated it as a police action instead of a military action, underestimating what the local Muslim crime gangs saw the action as. This eventually culminated in an extended fire fight where 2 black hawks were shot down, 19 American soldiers were killed, and over 1,000 Somali Muslims who attacked the US soldiers. Final kill count was something like 117:1. The US still slunk away in defeat instead of doing what they should, which was leaving Mogadishu a crater, and telling the UN and Europe to handle their own dirty work next time they get a bleeding heart.
>>
>>723884527
>people just didn't like being railroaded.
No, they absolutely do like it - when a game railroads them into heroics. That's kinda the point here.
>>
>>723883929

No, the problem is the game itself is awfully mediocre in terms of gameplay. It feels like an interesting story slapped onto a very jank third person shooter without much polish. You could have told the same story in a much better way in first person with less emphasis on combat and more on exploration of the city, maybe even more interactions with the people trapped in dubai and whatnot.

Thank goodness. I know people are really retarded about this game, especially armchair atheist philosopher types who misinterpret everything, but i really do think the message intended by the devs is that the US military (and to some extent war pigs war in general) are just israeli zogbots, and that the game is a warning to not enlist, so i was hoping it wasnt one of the game's writers writing such garbage.

I don't know why manchildren who play video games are so resistant to exploring the idea of being a bad person in media. They are having meltdowns over Undertale as well. "WHAT? LE GAME IS CALLING ME BAD!? NOOOO!!!!" I wonder if these people would have the same reactions if they tried reading something like Crime and Punishment. They just cannot accept that entertaining the idea of being evil, which a game reinforces by calling you out for doing evil things in the game, isn't the same as the game or devs calling you actually evil. It's all building a suspension of disbelief to enable you to explore that space.

Spec Ops does it better because it interrogates the player instead of presenting war as hell.

Basically, CoD and MoH operate within a framework that validates military intervention. You're the good guy with a gun solving problems through violence against a clear villain. Spec Ops flips this dynamic on it's head by using military shooters against you, it's not just showing war crimes but implicating (You) the player in them. Walker isnt saving anyone, he's pursuing a delusional fantasy of heroism that only causes more suffering.
>>
>>723906223

You're right, which is why Spec Ops' fourth wall breaking approach is the weakest element of the game, not it's strongest. "You're bad for playing this" angle is shallow moralizing that confuses real ethics with artificial choices. No one is harmed by video game white phosphorus, players aren't morally culpable for scripted events in a game they paid for or pirated.

The difference though is that CoD can show war as hell while still being a recruitment tool, Spec Ops can't be.

Yeah, except that shit doesn't translate well to a game, if you aren't given the choice to follow orders, retard. It clearly doesn't require 120+ iq if you managed to play it
>>
>>723909735
The idea is to put you in Walker's shoes, the problem is midwits mistake an attempt at generating empathy with "the game is telling me I'm evil because I did what it told me to do!".

>>
>>723911903
It's ok you don't need to defend a midwit writer because war is bad.
>>
>>723911903
I just think they do it in a way that kills immersion.
>>
>>723911986
I really wonder why people don't criticize Nier in the same way they do this game. Both are fundamentally the same concept, is it just that midwits didn't understand what killing the shadowlord meant?

>>723912410
I can understand complaining about fourth wall breaks, but of all the places to put them, I think the loading screen is a fun choice.
>>
Why does this game make trannies rage so much? This was absolutely not the case in the years after it came out, back then /v/ usually appreciated having a vidya version of Apocalypse Now. The answer is that trannies are mostly zoomers and younger, and they are sensitive about their childhood games (CoD and BF3) being made fun of.
>>
>>723912774
It's a bad game. I don't know how you could make a 3rd person shooty game boring but they managed to do it. Even army of two was better.

It's literally the opposite with trannies seething about Call of Duty because it's Le ebin imperialist military industrial propaganda or whatever

It's not a very good adaptation of Heart of Darkness, however.

You don't need to be a genius to understand this
>>
>>723913407
Far Cry 2 does a better job at being a Heart of Darkness adaptation because the game doesn't have to tell you how much of a bad person you are for shooting the fake video game people and it actually takes place in Africa
>>
>>723885392
"I was just following orders" is a legitimate defence. Soldiers are meant to follow orders. Blame politicians, not soldiers
>>
>>723883929
at first you shit on the game for forcing you to bomb the civvies
then you thank the game for giving you an opportunity to kill sandniggers

>We're giving players the option
Then they found out that their (test) players didn't take the obviously bullshit choice, so they removed the player choice altogether but kept acting as if the players were still making a choice. Genius.
>>
>>723885392
I didn't play the game, I watched a playthrough on YouTube.
Both me and the player playing the game had the exact same amount of agency in committing the war crime, since it's a scripted event.
Which one of us committed the war crime?
>>
>>723909735
It's not "shallow moralising", it wants you to fucking think. If you think the game is making you feel bad, why do you continue? Why do you care what a game thinks of you? Why do you care about things that happen in a game? Why do you care about *this* game in particular but not when others have you commit essentially war crimes?
>>
>>723914403
>Why do you care about *this* game in particular but not when others have you commit essentially war crimes?
Because very few other games are stupid enough to pretend they gave the player agency when they in fact didn't, and this stupidity is grating. Next question?
>>
>>723914328
You're wrong and a moron and it's just as well that you watch other people play video games instead of playing them since you don't seem to understand the added value of actually doing something
>>
>>723914403
Because it has a shallow ham fisted bullshit moral grandstanding that doesn't work. "Come and see" is a movie that perfectly encapsulates how bad war can be. You don't need to do a big brain "haha tricked you you piece of shit" to show war is bad.

This game is now about morally dubious situations or unintended consequences, it's a liberal arts college major sucking himself off about how he's better than you for knowing war is bad.

>>723914626
>actually doing something

Yes, your stupidity is very grating. Amazing self-awareness in an otherwise utterly retarded post.
>>723914646
What even is your point? This movie exists therefore game bad?

Bombing virtual civilians doesn't make you a bad person but being as fucking dense as you lot should be punishable by a drawn-out painful death in a just world.

You and many others. You are a collateral there. In SOTL Walker is judged directly either by himself or the player. That makes it a lot more personal.
>>
>>723883929
when the fundamental message of a game is "you shouldn't have bought our game", you have made a shitty game.
the audience that SO:TL was marketed to was not the audience that bought it.

Yeah that's why people like that scene. Your a name on a list, a statistic. In the end everything you did was for naught and the world keeps on spinning. Meanwhile SOTLfags think three guys decimating an entire battalion is somehow super deep commentary on military shooters.
>Instead of shooting brown people it's Americans
>Wow so deep
>>
>>723914918
You are. You don't know shit about games, you don't know shit about media, you don't know shit about philosophy, and the fact that you're cutting about thinking you're right about even a single thing at all is fundamental proof of the cosmic indifference to human follies like "justice". I hope you die.
>>
>>723915732
You just said one is good because it's good.
>>
>>723885392
No the problem was the game breaks the fourth wall and calls the 'player' out for it, not just the character. The developers have dialogue on loading screens specifically mentioning the player's "choices" being evil. So the only good choice is to not play the game.
>>
>>723915940
You're not avoiding doing bad things by playing other games, you're just avoiding being made to think about doing them.

M8 this board is proudly plebeian and you're among the plebeiest. You're a genuine anti-intellectual who looks down on actually knowing things and despises thinking about things, and to be called "plebeian" by the likes of you is a compliment. Don't even act like you value any philosophy at all.

I'm glad you finally understand your position. knowing one's self really is a liberating feeling, isn't it?

The game fails to show that, because you can't make mistakes. There is only one outcome. You can actively do the right thing and the game will just refuse to progress.
>>
>>723922697
And so you choose to progress instead. Like the devs knew you would.
