This isn't lost technology. It's just extra details the devs planned and decided to add into the games. Like pic related. They can still do this today, they just don't want to or can't due to restraints.

Now I'm no scientist but a bullet shot in water probably is already handicapped because it needs to go through the water in the barrel, and as we all know, water doesn't compress

And they did generate the same scene twice. That's what they did in SH3, they rendered the same model of Heather on the opposite side of the "mirror" and made it mimic the same movement.

the bullet probably loses more energy to penetrate the glass of a fish tank which is probably a higher strength glass because it has to hold the pressure of the water

Nvidia had a lower market share then. Studios didn't actively seek them out for tech.
It wasn't until around late 2010s that NVIDIA now reaches out to every big devs to fix their render pipeline for them as well as help them integrate stuff like DLSS for their games. AMD tried to do it but they do not have the same budget and can't afford it really.

I guess it's the shift in the industry. Then almost everything was tailor made for your game while now you can buy an asset with half dozen textures for normals, albedo, roughness, reflections etc and slap that in your game.
Also temporal anti aliasing solutions have issues with very thin pixels and might delete them from a scene. If you ever played a modern unreal game with rain you might know what I'm talking about.

Honestly, betting that most AAA devs, especially the bigger ones, are being pushed/encouraged/incentivized by software/hardware companies to push newer rendering technologies as much as they possibly could.
It could also be that the pipelines for new rendering tech doesn't play nicely with a lot of older techniques, and that some cases (like optional raytracing) would add a lot of additional work.

Also, the scale of AAA games have increased dramatically, and many devs no longer have the EXTRA time or budget to experiment with "lost tech". It's a sad state of affairs.

It was an unplayable piece of shit, literally impossible to finish at launch and possibly the first AAA game to be shamelessly released unfinished and to need huge +15GB patches just to be playable from start to finish.
It destroyed the reputation of the AC brand to the point even the normie Ubislop audience turned their backs on them, with Syndicate underperforming so bad they had to turn the franchise into Witcher 3 clones of all things.
And that's not counting the shit optimization - on which you're right. Seeing it posted here in this thread with this topic, years of updates later, it's ridiculous. Gamers have 0 memory.

I miss when games used to offer sandboxes like this where you could just wade into a large battle in any number of ways, with vehicles or other troops supporting you or just sneaking off and fighting off on a flank somewhere. It added a ton of replayability to the levels. Earlier Halo titles also did a good job of this.

Everything nowadays is either narrow corridor-levels of scripted linearity, or some facimile of the "Ubisoft open world"... there's a grey area in between those two extremes that singleplayer games just don't seem to have anymore, at least AAA titles.

Going back to mid-00s' graphics would honestly be an UPGRADE at this point. People don't really realize how fuzzy and unstable the modern vidya visuals are, until they go and play ye olde games with pixel-perfect, forward rendered frames, with real AA, sharp lighting, some actual colors, and insanely high framerate.

it's always incredibly cringey when millennials try to take credit for the games they played as kids (made by gen x and boomers) and then say the games their generation made are total dogshit and blame it on zoomers who were kids at the time

I wonder just how much effort would have to go into making it so that sound simulation was also a part of the game/physics engine.
Essentially, instead of having a bunch of sound files, you'd be able to set certain values for objects and materials to give off, by default or when interacted with, that the engine would then translate into audible frequencies while also being able to take into account the environment the sound was being produced in.
>>
>>724001894

With 2005 hardware, the top game is gunning at 60+ fps by default.

With 2025 hardware, the bottom game is gunning at 20-30fps by default.

The sad part is that this stuff isn’t even hard to program. You just need someone with attention to detail

If you tried this in a modern corporate game your bosses would be like
>Erm, that is a low priority ticket, we will get around to it when we finish cybersecurity on the storefront page so nobody can pirate the battle pass
>(No programming experience) Woah that sounds really hard and a longer time to implement, nope!
>Your solution is not modular. What about the 500 other water tanks in our massive open world? What if the water tank falls over? Do it correctly or dont do it at all!
>Stay in your lane Rajesh! You are just a codemonkey, do as you are told! Design is handled by Eliza Lesbianstein’s team in California. Dont even bother emailing them they are having a donut nom day to celebrate ramadam

And the worst part is that 99.99% of the players will go
>Who cares, I just want my dopamine
>>
>>723982587
That actually looks fucking fantastic. All you're doing is pointing out the low res textures here, but everything else looks practically modern, and low res textures can be resolved easily with a texture mod. It won't even affect performance as long as you've got the VRAM to handle it.

i would have thought by now we would at least have water reflections perfected by now but water is still affected by culling of environment (look down in the water and the reflections disappear).
on top of that the water shaders now also look weird around edges of objects rendered in front of it, devs just look at this and say it's fine.

Nah, that's N64 technology.
In games like this, it's a second camera, and the mirror reads that camera's output as its color.
It gets more complicated with modern graphics, where the screen is actually rendered as several different passes for things like ambient occlusion, which is why developers don't even bother.
