My copy just came. Playing it right now. I know the game literally just came out but does anyone know if this game has NG+ this time? I wished the first game had unlockables to take into next playthroughs instead of starting from scratch and having the game play out the same way every time. Some replayability would go a long way.
>>
>>723972510
There hasn't been a single indie Resi clone that actually matches up to Resi. Every single one of them makes some change that just ruins the gameplay in some way or they're just incredibly low quality. Unlimited or per resource capped inventory so you can just have a massive stockpile of heals and ammo? Making it so every enemy drops money so you're incentivized to kill them all? Trying to implement a shitty dynamic difficulty system by making it so interacting with a garbage can will give you a random resource you're missing but if you're full on everything then interacting with it will "waste" that garbage can so it introduces some meta game strategy of not interacting with them unless you're missing some resource (Fuck you Crow County)? All awful decisions.
By the way since I'm going on this rant anyway, what's the deal with all the Resi clones solely ripping off RE1, and maybe adding RE3's ammo mixing too? Adding dual protagonists might be a bit much, but every Resi has some unique mechanics that you never see anywhere else. Multi slot items, Jill's dodge, CV's multi target gun or even the first person sniper, 0's throwing weapon or Outbreak's million little unique mechanics like combo weapons or something.
It feels like survival horror fans are willing to put up with low quality garbage or titles that aren't really survival horror just because they're so starved for good games.
>>
Why does it need to be better ? I sincerely doubt it will generate pages and pages of discussion like Signalis did is this a trauma thing for you faggots ? you got treated worse by your parents than your siblings ? just going off on this I dont even feel like trying the game

I really liked the first one, because it nailed that REmake/SH 1-3 feeling better than any game I’ve played in decades. That said, I’m currently playing through Silent Hill 3, and then I’ll have to replay Tormented Souls 1 for a recap of what happened because I honestly don’t remember the plot at all, and I go through games really slowly these days, so I probably won’t get to TS2 until Thanksgiving. I might even save it for January, as my RE9 pregame.

>>723972510
I tried the demo. It seems to be pretty much a expansion pack. At least the nun cloister environments looked very similar to the 19th century hospital from TS1. Main difference were the otherworldly parts. TS1 clearly had silent hill in mind for that while what little I saw in the demo was more aquatic (cthulu)

that old school fixed camera angle style of survival horror doesn't lend itself to good gameplay mechanics, capcom tried to stack gimmicks like the ones you mentioned but at the end they had to change drastically into the action horror of resident evil 4.
the main value of pure survival horror games is the atmosphere, the classics are seen with rose tinted glasses because of nostalgia but when you boil it down they aren't any better than today imitations. after you play a couple they all fade together into rehashes of the same shitty formula: move into next room, check if there are items, sidestep enemies, repeat. This is an intrinsic limit of the genre, after you get used to the "horror" all it's left is a mindless checklist of key items. The last time capcom tried it with code veronica they put together all the experience they had, yet making it slightly longer than usual was enough to bore to death even the most diehard fans and the game is today considered one of their worst.

I tried the first one. But right after starting, I entered a dark corner of a hallway, and the entire screen turned to static. I guessed that was the game telling me to leave, so I tried to. But nothing seemed to work. I tried moving back, but didn't know which way I was moving, since it was just static. Then after trying to leave for a short while, I died. Then, I had to start the game from the start, since there was no save option yet. And the cutscenes were unskippable. Uninstalled at that point.

I fundamentally disagree with you, because I can boot up Outbreak and still have tons of fun with it, even if I'm playing single player. I played through the PS1 trilogy for the first time 5 years ago and I had way more fun with them than any of the clones that I had played previously or since, so it's not like nostalgia is clouding my opinion.
And you act like boiling the game down to its most basic elements is an actual argument as if you can't apply that to any genre. It's clear that you just aren't that big of a fan of the genre and that's fine, but don't act like it's inherently flawed and limited, those limitations only exist in peoples' minds. And by the way, CV might've tried to push the genre but it wasn't shit because of that, it was shit because of a variety of simply awful decisions. Outbreak is a game that pushed the genre more than any literally anything else that exists, although it's hampered by some of the shittiest netcode known to man and some sadistic game design.

I already alluded to that one, with its enemies that all drop money. I did have some fun with it, but it had a lot of questionable design decisions and it's just hard to see it as survival horror despite being so obviously inspired by it. I'll definitely be picking up the sequel though.

The boiling down argument doesn't work on games with more in depth moment to moment gameplay, resident evil 4-5-6 mercenaries for example have more to it than kill enemies > move to next room, the scoring forces the player to explore the combat beyond running and gunning. the varius stuns, positioning, how to exploit i-frames, manage enemies to keep combos and maximize points. This apply to the campaign too for example on how to deal with combinations of different enemies. There is a lot of depth there, obviously if you play for 1000 hours it's going to boil down to autopilot as well, but it takes much longer to fully understand and break down.
Compare that to resident evil 1-2-3, the only meaningful decision you make when you enter a room is whether or not you will hold R1 and spam X, depending on how easy it is to navigate the room avoiding the enemies. There are some more things here and there, like in 3 being able to pull out the counter consistently gives you some fun knife only runs, but nothing close to action games.
Now i didn't say you can't have some fun with the classics, i'm shitting on them a lot in these post lol but i actually enjoy them too, i'm just pointing out that the more you try to add "depth" the more you stray away from the classic survival horror experience. another thing to point out is how literally every one of these games tend to become more action oriented as it progresses, to offset the repetitiveness and simplicity of the main "explore to find key" gameplay loop.
Outbreak is indeed very different from the classic formula, it was balanced in a completely different way with constantly spawning enemies, randomized key items, timers, different scoring. I haven't played it enough to talk about it in depth though.
I could ramble some more but i'm near 2000 chars and i can't be bothered to make multiple posts.

But the boiling down argument does work for the main campaign because you can just say "Shoot the enemies until they die". Sure there's more mechanical depth to it, what with more complex enemies and weakpoints, but boiling things down means ignoring that, just like how you ignore the various enemies in classic Resi that have unique behaviors that encourage you to treat them differently, like zombies vs dogs vs Lickers.
I sorta get what you're saying, third person shooters have a lot more immediate and easy to grasp depth to their combat, but that doesn't mean that classic Resi combat has to be super simple or sacrifice the horror to have more engaging combat.
Shit, you made me type enough for two posts fuck you
>>
>>723999173
>>724003058
>I haven't played it enough to talk about it in depth though.
I really think you should, because Outbreak is the pinnacle of the genre. I'm not saying it's a perfect game, it's only the pinnacle because the genre literally died between its releases with Files 1 and 2 releasing just before and after RE4, but I think it solves tons of issues that survival horror has always had.
The loss of horror because after the first few hours you've managed to get a massive stockpile of items? Short scenarios and a tiny inventory means that you'll never have too many items.
A lack of combat depth? Well now you've got actual melee weapons, character abilities like dodges and melee attacks, a couple of characters with timed input attack combos, guns having damage fall off meaning you can't just efficiently pick them off from a distance, and a bunch of other little things that make it much more engaging. But at the same time enemies are infinite and you're on a constant timer that's tied to your health which means that fighting an enemy will always come at a loss but getting hit isn't something that you can just heal away.
The game getting repetitive after a couple of playthroughs? With 8 different characters, randomized item sets for every level, 4 difficulties that significantly change the level and can even alter the level structure or add new enemies, and multiplayer that allows for more dynamic gameplay means that you can play it for hundreds of hours like I have and still have fun.
Outbreak is just the sort of game that makes it hard for me to be a survival horror fan because it sets a standard that hasn't even been approached by any other game since, despite being so heavily flawed.

I thought about dogs/hunters/lickers after posting, they do switch things up a bit, but not enough to invalidate my argument.
By boiling things down i don't mean "strip literally everything except what separates you from the credit screen", maybe i put it down in too much of a dismissive tone but the navigation of old resi doesn't make up for the depth of 4-5-6. You got what i meant so it's fine.

Anyway i never really thought that much about outbreak, maybe i just forgot about it since it's not very popular. But your shilling worked, i feel like trying it again, i'll nag some friends to download it

Awesome, I'm glad I could get you to do it. I'll be honest, it's a game that can take a while to "get", but once you do there's nothing else like it.
And a word of advice if you're forcing friends to play it, if they aren't classic Resi pros consider having them start up File 2 first and playing the tutorial level on that before going back to the first game and playing the first level. Sure there's a couple of mechanics in the 2nd game that aren't in the first so they might be a little confused, but the first level of Outbreak just throws you straight into it without a single safe room until you get halfway through the level, and there are 4 separate instant kill situations because lmao. The tutorial will make them a lot less likely to rage quit and drop the game, and it'll explain their character's main ability too.
Anyway good luck, hope you enjoy the game dude.

Neat setting and visual style but it might be one of my least favorite indie RE/SH clones to actually play, and a lot of the discourse around it give me the impression it’s celebrated mainly by pretentious pseuds.

She gets stripped to her underwear at the beginning. Remains to be seen if she gets the rest of at any point. Also I hope the game has more rewards for beating the game. There was literally nothing in the first game. Give us some nice alt costumes.
>>
>>724014428
How many are there really? Probably a drop in the bucket compared to more contemporary style horror games that get churned out on the daily, and a lot were already mentioned ITT.

There are 11 types of enemies and 4 bosses.

1. Tortured guys
2. Spider men
3. Lobster dudes
4. Pigs
5. Crabs
6. Ghost ladies
7. Zombies
8. Mannequins
9. Dolls
10. Diver suit guys
11. Giant gorilla like mutants

Bosses:
1. Nun with hammer
2. Angler fish guy
3. Pig butcher
4. Cthulhu final boss

Much better than Signalis’ 3 types of enemies lmao.

TLDR of the first game?
I think I got half way through it before a save got corrupted and I didn't want to go through it all again
>>
>>724016438
Evil cult trying to awaken ancient evil god. Teenage girl stops them while rescuing her twin sister. Then end.
>>
>>724016535
Also to rescue her twin she needs to travel to the past through evil cult magic hence why her "twin" sister in this game looks 10-15 years younger than her. Cause she is.
>>
>>724016218
There are only like 2 medical body horror monsters. The tortured guys and spider monsters. The rest are more "mutant" like the lobster men and gorilla mutants.

It's funny that I remember that the reveal that she and her sister were the ones the cult were experimenting on was supposed to be the big twist of the game but I can't actually remember why it's a twist cause I can't remember what the initial assumption for what was going on was supposed to be when the game starts.

To flesh it out a little more
The priest is the teenage girl's grandfather. He is the head of the evil cult. He needs twins to perform an evil ritual. The person who knocks the teenage girl out, strips her naked and tosses her into a tub is the teenage girl's father. He's trying to cure his wife, the teenage girl's mother, of a terrible illness. He does not know that's his daughter. The mother got a terrible illness by rescuing her daughters from the evil cult. The evil god gives off evil radiation which turns people into evil monsters. The immortal ghost floating around eating people is the twin sister. The teenage girl saves her sister from this fate by traveling into the past to help her escape then. The father develops a cure but the mother had already died. Teenage girl uses it on her sister in the present but it's too late and she dies too. The grandfather kills the father. The teenage girl never meets her father or mother in the game despite them both being present. The person who cut out the teenage girl's eye is herself. She needs it to solve a puzzle.

>>724033603
Yeah but other genres that indies make clones of tends to have at least one or two games that are of passable quality, or at the very least people who play the game are willing to call it out as the absolute trash that it is. With survival horror even bottom of the barrel garbage will have people saying that it's decent, and even something like Tormented Souls, which has tons of people calling it the highest quality indie Resi clone out there, has a laughable level of quality in some areas. Look at the animations of this basic fucking enemy >>723993945 and tell me that it sliding towards the player while constantly recoiling from being shot, slowly leaning forward to bite the player, doing a fucking backflip from being shot with a nailgun and then going from laying down to immediately standing after being hit once doesn't look awful.
I don't know why, but with survival horror specifically it feels like fans are so starved for good games that any score for them that you see on Steam is inflated by 20% across the board.
>>
>>724039629
I see, thanks. I will play the game eventually.

>>
>>724049563
It's good: very strong visual identity with far off sci-fi and the gameplay is just topdown survival horror stuff, puzzles are nice (though the devs are hobby radioists and that reflects in the game).
But: It's vague in its storytelling and it's unclear how literal anything that happens at any moment in the game is due to psychic fuckowucko powers distorting shit. And it has lesbians (which is why trannies latched on HARD). On release /v/ was all over this game in a good way, it only became ptoo fuck off tier once tertiaries (who didn't play the game) noticed trannies on reddit liked it.
>>
>>724049819
It's a direct continuation. Characters and notes reference the first game without explaining stuff.
Technically you could play this and understand the core stuff, but why? TS2 is literally just more of TS1 without being better and the first game isn't dated.

Just play TS1 first.
