Is there any other game series that’s like pokemon in gameplay? Like the format where you have a monster you battle other monsters with and can catch the other monsters? SMT is close but not exactly. And most monster catching games have some weird gimmick to it and aren’t to the point and direct like the old pokemon games were

No wonder pokemon games are so simple and bad, you are their audience. There's no overly complicated digimon game.
>>
>>724044116
smt is pokemon with fusion and you don't want to admit it.
>>
>>724044139
digimon sucks because you always lose the monsters at some point
i could never get into any of the digimon games because they take away your team
i know that's the point because virtual pets or something but it doesn't make them any fun

fusion is fucking gay
i don';t want to turn my fairy and imp into a hellhound.
I want a cooler fucking fairy, a cooler fucking imp and a hell hound i can train then raise.
>hurf just fuse for that cooler fairy
No.
gay
faggot shit
my monsters aren't just a resource to burn off.
I want to raise a thing i catch at the start all the way to the end and see it grow and develop naturally.
This is WHY SMT, digimon, and dragon quest monsters are fucking dog shit and never catch on.
Your team NEVER matters cause you keep throwing them away for 'better' creatures.
temtem, casset beast and nexomon are the only ones really close to pokemon.
>>
>>724045162
That's just a few digimon world games. Digimon story is your typical jrpg and it's the most successful of the games.

>>
>>724045453
ash sucks and the pokemon anime is trash that contributed a lot to the infantilisation and dumbing down of the setting that we have had for a long time now

I wish pokemon never got this big and people understood and treasured the setting and vibes of the gen 1 games and the manga
>>
>>724044116
was butterfree even good in gen1?
>>
>>724044415
It's the other way around. Digimon is worse because it's so simple. The battle system is like if you took Pokemon's and ripped out everything besides three types. Boring.

It pokemon made the exact same game as time stranger the fans would be calling it a masterpiece and one of the best games ever made.

Earliest, easiest, fastest way to get access to poison, paralysis and/or sleep.
Any time I play gen 1 games, I try to get one right away for the sleep and poison.
Also they're the earliest source of a Psychic move (Confusion) until.... Abra, I think?
Considering half the gen 1 dex is weak to Psychic, it's a nice thing to have

>Fusion adds a mechanical layer to the game.
It also invalidates the entire point of the genre.
People don't want to collect stuff just to mash it together with other stuff to get something they don't like.
Just look at siralim, a complete mess only accessible by extreme autists because of this.
You can have mechanical debt and not invalidate the entire core of the genre.Fusion is not the way to do it.
>>
>>724047775
Almost no competition, formerly good games, extremely successful advertising and merchandising during it's peak popularity. What does that have to do with today? It has competition, it's games are low effort trash and I'm an adult now so I don't fall for false hype.

You choose fusions you like, that's like complaining Charmander evolves to Charizard, Charmander just got bigger, whatevs.
>It also invalidates the entire point of the genre.
This depends on what metaphysical framework you operate on. e.g. the philosophy of when Vegeta turns into Vegito.
Poke-onlyfags simply don't have the philosophychops to insert themselves into a philosophical framework they like when playing a game. It's a skill issue.

>Why do you think pokemon had an option to stop this from gen 1?
There are people who try to bring a demon they like to endgame (I've seen Pixie or Alice) Idk if it is common though so I won't speak on it.
>But you are sacrificing the original? That si the entire point.
>What in the goddamn?
It depends on your theory of mind.
In Dragon Ball, it doesn't work under the theory that Vegeta is sacrificed on a fusion. Their consciousnesses are shared into Vegito.
But that's just scratching the surface.

Teletransportation_paradox
This paradox, Ship of Theseus, and so on. There are extremists who look at the paradox and conclude that we're becoming different persons every 1 plank second. That's not what I'm saying, but it's an extremist philosophy that exists.
As spiritual-digital creatures, maybe they simply return to an original form? Could it be a holy mystery? Or is it Dragon Ball where they merge and fusion is Vegito?
SMT fans are all philosopher godkings and know this stuff. It's a required skill to even start playing the game.

Aethermancer is like pokemon but better
>>
>>724044116
Most of them are kinda like that
I tried DQM but thought it was boring, I can't even say why.
Digmon gets close but it also has training and while I like the branching evolution trees, it doesn't make much sense in Digimon and most of them end up in the same end-level digimon
Issue with SMT is that they feel more like skills/equipment, sure you negotiate but the series never progressed from there which is a shame.

I think the reason why Pokemon works so well is that it's kinda simple. At least it used to be, you're just some kid training your Pokemon and on your journey you meet some people and dickheads. No "super evil guy awakened and is about to destroy the world" that came later though
Dunno about romhacks, the ones I tried were either Smogon tier bullshit and edgy. Pokemon is supposed to be charming first, edge is only a bit of a side dish for characters who have father issues
>>
>>724052198
damn i came to this thread to post it and the most recent post before updates was about it
>>
>>724045982
Sure, but it would be the better game for lack of a stupid fucking farm system, as well as talent and bond to a lesser degree. But lacking the farm mechanics would gigantically improve the game.
>>
>>724052246
Infinite Fusion stays pretty grounded, though it's not technically a romhack.
It's gen 1 but with "more". More Pokemon, more stuff to do, more places to go, and includes gen 2 as a postgame.
The plot's mostly the same "go get badges and beat the league", but the biggest change was Team Rocket's involvement grown a bit to include them wanting to fuse the three legendary birds together, plus a few other random little evil plots along the way.
As for the gameplay, it's not Smogon-tier, but there's settings for that, including difficulties and level caps, randomizers, nuzlocke, whatever.
The hard mode makes everything fight with actual strategy, though I hear there's ways to cheese it.
My favorite setting is their remixed mode where they add Pokemon throughout the map for more variety so it's harder to prep for what you're going to fight at any given time and you're not just playing "Gen 1.1 With Fusion". I think I remember they dick with gym leaders' Pokemon a bit too much for my tastes in this mode though.
>>
>>724052246
Romhacks really disappoint me because they never have any imagination when it comes to experimenting with Pokemon's formula. Like you said, it's always some competitive level bullshit, when all I want is a version of pokemon that's around the same difficulty with just a little mroe mechanical honesty.

Want to be able to see and alter EVs and IVs in a mechanically interesting way? Too bad, the best you'll get is a boring stat screen that lets you directly modify them.
>>
>>724052779
Infinite Fusion.
>>
>>724052807
Sad to say the gimmick turns me off from it because it's raw idea bloat. How does it handle EV training though?

Seconding World of Final Fantasy
>>
>>724056974
Before Gen 4, attacking moves were denoted as Physical or Special depending on their elemental type. Fire was Special, Rock was Physical, etc. Now, attacks are individually determined as Physical or Special, and romhacks will blindly add this change into versions of the game that weren't built with this in mind.
>>
>>724056974
if you don't know, in gen 1-3, a move was physical or special depending on what type it was. water is special, fighting is physical, etc. starting in gen 4, each move has its own category regardless of type, so waterfall is physical, and fighting type aura sphere is special.
>>
>>724057192
>That's what I meant by type split
but what is it? isn't this that physical attacks use attack/defense for number calculation and special attacks use sp.attack/sp.defense? or is another thing that i'm not aware of? last game i played was emerald
>>
>>724057363
>>724057384
ah i see
>>
>>724057192
I wouldn't even mind them adding in modern mechanics if it wasn't so prevalent and lazy. The only romhack I've seen try to do anything unique in terms of balancing is the Legacy romhacks, where they swapped Dark and Ghost's Special and Physical trait and that's it. It's also done by a jewtuber, which only makes it more depressing. How are non-clout chasing fans lazier and more uninspired than a literal Game Freak shill?
