I think the modern Wasteland games showed that you can still adapt a CRPG game in an isometric style, and it's still engaging and fun to play. Fallout 1 & 2 = Classics that feel like it. Slow. Boring. Fallout 3 = The start of modern Fallout. A bit jank, but fun story, and the sweet spot of RPG that's perfect for newbies and RPG autists alike. Fallout New Vegas = Obsidian showing why they lost the license. Shit characters, shit story. 3 was fun the first time but the intro sucks to go through and the DC wasteland is pretty sparse. None of the settlements feel like they're part of a world and are pretty disconnected from each other. The story is ridiculous too, people have been living in the wasteland without the water purifier for decades and don't see worse for wear without it. Not to mention prior to Broken Steel you HAVE to sacrifice yourself and after Broken Steel if you send anyone else in the game tells you in a very passive aggressive manner how much of a hero you aren't.
