Is there a guide on how to experience thief and it's mods on a modern PC?

Just use this.

It's really easy.

Install openal
Install tfix lite https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733
Or t2fix lite for the sequel
If you wanna do custom maps open up cam_mod.ini and uncomment the line that autostarts the FM selector.
You're done. If you got the game on gog you can skip openal since it comes with it.

Since this is a thief thread on /v/ I'll just put this here- I was incredibly disappointed with this mod. Yes, it is really well made. But it was extremely overhyped and every other mission was twice the length it should've been. This is the first time that playing a game felt physically exhausting because the missions are TOO complex.

TFix Lite / T2Fix Lite is the way to go. You just unzip that shit on top of the game.
The full installation of TFix comes with mods that can conflict with fan missions if you ever want to play those, it's just not worth the hassle.
>>
>>724059954
old games just work on Linux, so I'd go ahead and overwrite Winblows with something useful like Debian or Arch.
>>
>>724062016
I agree with the overhyped part but not with the complexity part, I found the pacing fine
>>
Grab Gold to Dark too. Thief Gold adds new levels and redoes some of the base game's levels. Most of the new levels aren't good, with one being massive trash. The remixed level is worse too, ruining the atmosphere.
>>
>>724062775
You're gonna want these fixes even on linux.
t. played them on linux
As far as I know they actually run fine out of the box even on windows, it's just that they're gonna run like the did in 1998
>>
>>724063129
I disagree partly because the suffering is part of the true thief experience, but also because song of the caverns is probably my favorite mission in both thief games.
>>
>>724062016
The last mission was ass
>>
>>724063240
SotC is the good one, I'm also one of the few who likes Mage Towers. I don't like what Gold does to Lost City and obviously Thieve's Guild is Thieve's Guild. If it wasn't for mission skip I'd have never played past it.
>>
>>724063129
You miserable retard, Song of the Cavern is the second best mission in the game, and climbing some of the elemental mages towers is very fun. Just ctrl+alt+shift+end Thieves Guild.
>>
>>724063745
I like it too, mage towers is definitely a good level.

Time passes too quickly but not that fucking quickly anon
>>
>>724063051
Perhaps complex isn't the right word, but I definitely think they're too long. The Long Shadow Falls probably took me like 3 hours to do. Yes, it is a skill issue but these missions just seem to drag.

You are brown with lack of spatial awareness. The missions were the greatest FMs ever crafted and the entire community agrees.

interesting, i was mostly just trolling but this game has been on my list and i am running Linux, so i guess i'll end up using the fix

>Thief Gold was the first PC game I ever played
>built my first PC just to play Thief 2
>could only begin to imagine how incredible games would be in the future
>quarter of a century later
>games are shit and i'm still playing Thief 1/2

I wish more people made content for The Dark Mod.
>>
>>724063129
Look I know Thieves' Guild has bad aesthetics but it's a welcome challenge over a lot of the OMs and I enjoy it over at least a third of Thief 1's total missions. I'm tired of people announcing this normalfag opinion like it's at all novel.
>>
>>724065108
Finally an updated FM list. Praise the Builder!
>>
>>724059954
Try the Dark Mod.
>>
>>724072016
Just because you like eating shit doesn't mean most people do.
>>
>>724064698
I personally am a fan of single levels that take a long time. You might only end up playing 1 level a day but there aren't that many good games to play anyway.
>>
>>724072583
If you skip Thieves' Guild and not Escape! then you don't get to throw that at others.
>>
>>724072690
Escape! is far better than Thieve's Guild though. Not great, probably not even good but still better. At least with Escape! you have a whole lot less bullshit to do to complete it.
>>
The only problem with Thieve's Guild is finding that fucking ring during your first playthrough.
>>
>>724073201
Matter of taste then. I find Escape! to be absolutely nothing but bullshit. My least favorite OM between Thief 1 and 2.
>>
>>724073527
this, unironically
the layout is confusing, for sure, but it's manageable
>>
>>724061279
I thought tafferpatcher was deprecated?
>>
>>724072094
Fourth line is sus tho, but OP refused to delete it.
A Very Thiefy Christmas Special was released after picrel but it’s incredibly comfy, and ideal for long winter nights.

I just hate Metal Age. Here I said it. We had zombies, all sorts of demons. And what did we trade that for? Security cameras? Automatons dying from water arrows? Thief 2 has some cool missions. That famous rooftop mission, tracking down bloody trails. But fuck the Mechanist tower and fuck the submarine. And especially, fuck the return to the lost city. It's just some kind of hell
>>
>>724076423
Yeah the more time passes the more I resent the setting of the metal age. I guess because there's loads of steampunk settings out there but not many dark project style settings.
>>
>>724076423
should've have zombies enslaved with medieval cybernetics and demon-powered generators instead
>>
>>724076423
It was obviously intentional to shift away from that to sell the setting and the Mechanists but yes, its just not as good.
>>
>>724076860
I tend to agree. There is a distressing lack of weird/occult/romanesque fantasy games in the industry.
>>
>>724076423
The Dark Project is the DNA of the series, that specific aesthetic is what makes it unique and cool. Everything past that is frustrating/tedious (TMA) or outright boring Harry Potter shit (TDS)
>>
>>724076423
It's an uneven experience for sure but it has most of my favorite levels from the series and the final level is surprisingly good. Also love the new potions and tools though I wish the level design really pushed you to use them creatively. I get the complaint that it's less supernatural and fantastical but it still has lots of supernatural elements sprinkled throughout, even if they're like side areas in missions otherwise about Mechanists or Sherriff Truart.
>>
>>724077726
TMA is far less uneven than TDP - it's just that the steampunk setting is slightly less interesting.
All those victorian mansions feel incredibly cosy tho.
>>
>>724076423
>We had *a bunch of shit that doesn't encourage stealth gameplay*
>We traded it for *a bunch of shit that encourages stealth gameplay*
TDP has turned into a massive contrarian magnet these days.
>>
>>724063252
thats a thief tradition tho

>>
>>724075639
it is, that guide is very outdated, at least for the GOG version
>>
>>724081168
I really liked the idea but that thing's legs became desynchronized in my game which was grotesque to look at
>>
>>724081104
I wonder, are there any FMs that try to improve upon the final missions in TDP and TMA?
>>
>>724081168
I wonder how they did this. Take an NPCs skeleton and stretch it into form, like those Sims cats glitching into human form? Creepy regardless
>>
>>724079104
>We had *a bunch of shit that doesn't encourage stealth gameplay*
>We traded it for *a bunch of shit that encourages stealth gameplay*
That's just bullshit. Stealth works against the undead too. You *can* fight against them, but then again, you can also disable the bots in Thief 2 so what's the actual difference?
>>
>>724076927
>should've have zombies enslaved with medieval cybernetics
That's basically what the servants are, and they're central to the plot of Thief 2. They just don't serve a very big gameplay role.
>>
>>724081728
Its a spider with some clever tricks.
>>
>>724059954
Why would you want to play this boomer-crap in 2025? Try Dishonored
>>
>>724076423
TMA makes you feel like a thief, TDP is FPS Tomb Raider. I can see why people like it but when I think of Thief I think of TMA.
>>
>>724081814
The only undead you can't fight against are the ghost, because they're incorporeal and are the only undead that encourages stealth. You can literally whack zombies with your sword to put them in a dormant state again, and unlike like guards, they can't block. Not to mention you can easily outrun them or bhop away. Zombies also can't alert each other like guards can.
Meanwhile disable bots in T2 requires sneaking up behind them to shoot them in their vents, using precious water arrows. Bots are also immune to sword strikes, some have range and they can alert guards.
>>
>>724082307
>Meanwhile disable bots in T2 requires sneaking up behind them to shoot them in their vents,
Or you can walk circles around them and bonk them with the blackjack. Yeah it takes several hits, but they're not immune.
>>
>>724082864
Alerting nearby guards in the process.
>>
>>724082980
Rarely a problem since blackjacking is always better than sneaking around a guard anyway.
>>
I just like the horror aspect.
>>
>>724083161
And how did you go about knocking out all those guards? That's right, from stealth.
>>
just playing through the black parade for the first time.
The second mission is fucking incredible, its just a well crafted love letter to 'The Sword'
>>
>>724083908
It really is. I think the fourth mission is the best one of the campaign and I won't spoil it for you
I wish I could replay TBP with all my memories of it gone
>>
just played Iris on the dark mod
its a fucking masterpiece of a mission holy fuckballs

also the hidden hands campaign (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 itself has 5 missions in a campaign) is great too

give me more kino as fuck dark mod missions
>>
>>724083908
It's one of my favorite Thief fm ever, together with Dim Valley, Into the Odd and Alcazar.
Thief fms are the only instances of successfully pulling off weird fantasy in gaming.

The protagonist and the plot were quite weak but everything else was pretty decent. Something like this but for Thief 2 would be great too.
