Here are some of the possible movement patterns you will adopt in such arenas.
Doom 2 is good because it's purely a matter of positioning.
Your position is everything. You will adopt movements that keep you safe, allow you to kill enemies, and manipulate their movements. These are three things you need to constantly evaluate and decide in real time, based on your reading of the map layout. The layout alone does not determine everything, obviously. The position of enemies at the moment and the position of resources should be constantly taken into account, and the player will have to adjust his strategy in real time.
Of course, this will only happen on very well-designed maps, but when it does, it is super satisfying to play. A game with simple controls and objectives, but one that is always forcing you to make the best spacial decisions. Coincidentally, this is what happens in board games that have stood the test of time, such as chess, backgammon, go, etc. That's why Doom is still played, the new levels are always offering new challenges within those simple rules, and I think the game will continue to be played as long as there are humans on the planet (even if games like Doom 2016 are forgotten).
