>/v/ likes Japan and role playing games
>/v/ doesn't like Dragon Quest
Why does it filter the westerner?
>>
I dislike a lot of RPGs but I enjoyed the first DQ. It's like Zelda 1 but with simple turn based combat so even a grandma could beat it.
>>
>>724070594
excessively linear compared to WRPGs, in fact it was the originator of the term "But Thou Must!" on TV Tropes
basically a visual novel with stat checks required to turn the page, which is supremely popular in Japan but not as much in the USA
>>
>>724070594
Antiquated gameplay that fills a niche done better elsewhere now and the designs were only really good early on.
>>
>>724070594
Because by any standard but an extremely biased one, Dragon Quest is a very boring, very bad game.
>>
>>724073276
but the west loves VNs that try to hide the fact they're vns?
>>
>>724073280
it's how the classic debate over games as art plays out
in Japan, the dev team creates all the art, and the player just walks through the digital gallery admiring it
in the USA, the dev team only creates the tools that are then given to the players to make the art, and the players make anything from Ugandan Knuckles to fucking kino Skyrim mass dragon army battles

>>724070594
I like dragon quest thoughever
>>
>>724070594
It's boring and the only actual thing it had over other rpgs was Toriyama's character design
>>
>>724073023
I liked DQ1 because it's a rare case of a JRPG without a party, and I really like that
>>
Japan only likes pokeshit snd the west like that shit too
>>
>>724073772
Not all of them. Just a lot of shit like Life is Strange and Night in the Woods.
>>
>>724073896
That's the reason I don't like DQ1. 1v1 combat isn't fun when it's turn-based.
>>
>>724074078
yeah the combat is worse, but I like it for the atmosphere/sense of adventure it gives
>>
>>724070594
Even in Japan, only actual boomer like Dragon Quest. Zoomer don't give a shit about it anymore.
>>
>>724070594
the vegeta face is just too powerful.
>>
>>724074007
even Life Is Strange and Night in the Woods let the players make choices that screwed all kinds of things up, hell even Corruption of Champions had options
>WRPG: The bear is there but you don't have to fuck it
>JRPG: But Thou Must fuck the bear so I can continue telling my story
>>
>>724073023
DQ1 is the best DQ but i think i mostly just like the way it feels closer to the CRPGs that inspired it
>>
>>724074269
what if I don't care for choices and endings and I just want turn based combat?
>>
>>724074269
>muh choices
why are westerners obsessed with every game being a CYOA book?
>>
>>724074473
then by all means enjoy your JRPGs, most of Japan wants the same thing and they make and sell lots of really good ones
>>
>>724070594
Which of the DQ games can I play that arent censored and are not memelocalized?
>>
>>724070594
Dragon Quest other than 8 and maybe Joker are too tame and boring.
>>
>>724074823
Joker 1 is too slow Joker 2 is better.
>>
>>724074569
because we enjoy crafting our own stuff, including our own preferred storylines in the video games we play
especially when we can make a viral machinma video showcasing all the crazy stuff we can do that the devs never intended
>>
>>724074569
Because that's essentially what a quest/campaign module is for actual roleplaying games just narrated by some 40-50 old grognard (in order to allocate the system resources for sandbox and running the world) who probably served time grinding away at World Of Warcraft when you were in your mother's womb dreaming of being able to fuck D&D monster pussy and writing fanfics (his own setting) to run for his crew. That's how a lot of old CRPGs started. Personal campaigns so you could play at home.
>>
>>724074823
Dragon Quest 8 was a big departure for the series, actually having two endings depending on whether the protagonist could prove themselves an heir or not, and even more in the remake, where you could actually end up marrying Jessica
like Chrono Trigger, it was not at all popular in Japan but possibly one of the most popular games in the USA for this reason
>>
probably shit gameplay and unpolished UI / anims
>>
>>724075339
As a kid I didn't get a chance to play it but it was 100% intriguing to see with its graphics being pure Toriyama as I had read through Dragon Ball prior, all volumes.
>>
>>724075520
Chrono Trigger had an almost insane variety of storylines and endings you could get, and possibly the most convoluted plot in any JRPG before or since
sadly, Squeenix saw this as a huge problem that should never have happened, and spent the next decades doing everything in their power to torch the franchise and run
>>
>>724075041
>actual roleplaying games
As opposed to... Not actual role playing games...?
>>
>>724075852
>50% combat.
>25% exploration, 25% problemsolving/dialogue options. No hand holding.
There you go.
>>
>>724075440
/thread
>>
>>724075951
Who decided this, other than you? What if exploration is only 24%, is that still a role playing game?
>>
>>724076082
>within the margin whataboutism.
holy shit anon.
>>
>>724074225
Zoomers are all trannies
>>
>>724070594
The main thing it had going for it was charm and thanks to Square Eni slurping ESG, there no more reason to get into DQ games.
>>
>>724075852
“Actual roleplaying games” as in “the tabletop shit that was the ancestor to the fucking JRPGs you’re playing now.” Classic Dungeons & Dragons, and other games that the DM ran for you and gave YOU the choice in how your character responded to the world. If you don’t see the appeal in CYOA elements in an RPG, why not just play a fucking board game?
>>
you can always tell when it’s dbspics and grifting twitter niggers like^
>>
Why is this thread anti JRPG in general and not anti DQ?
>>
>>724076383
>MUH ROLEPLAYING

>>
>>724076543
Stick to your cinemasony slop then.

DQ is SOVL so it has to be shit on by nu-/v/eddit
>>
>>724073276
>TV Tropes
You have to go back
>>
>>724076530
Westerners think that RPGs are required to be sandboxes that let you do anything, with their reasoning being "it's like D&D", you know, if that game was actually Minecraft.
>>
>>724076675
>projection
baldurslop is peak cinemasnoy garbage complete with faggot bears sex and marvel quips

JRPGs are godly gamer sovl kino for white aryans
>>
>>724076383
Yes, choices. Choices like, rolling for agility, or falling onto a bed of spikes and dying. Accepting a request, or ignoring it. Choices.
