Unique. You can feel it's very much like Noby Noby Boy in how unstructured and chaotic it is. It's essentially an absurdist puzzle game and if that sounds interesting and you like the chaos of Katamari or NNB it's worth giving a look. Make sure you only get it for like $15-20 though, it's a game you can finish in an afternoon, has no replay value, and has no real difficulty to speak of. If you are getting it on the PS4 just know that it runs really bad on base PS4s and on a PS4 Pro it's 30 with heavy drops into single digits at times. A PS5 might be able to fix those issues but the PC version is the way to go unless you want a physical copy.

I am convinced its the best Katamari to date.
Its a beat easy so far but WLK was way too fucking hard if you were going for super clears so I dont mind.
I HATE they even include a simple control scheme and I HATE the easy dashing even though I do use it because I dont want to fuck up my controller anymore

>Katamari Rolling Live
I feel like barely anyone played it. I'm a big Katamari fan but I was never going to play a new entry on a phone. Didn't matter anyway because I don't have an Apple phone.
Is there anything specific in it that would prevent it from being ported to consoles? I don't think Apple does lifetime exclusivity contracts. Hello Kitty Island Adventure was Apple exclusive but it came to other systems eventually.

They were still updating the game as recently as a few weeks ago, adding new levels, music and cousins. Maybe it'll see wider release after they're done with their content pipeline. It's definitely good enough to qualify as a mainline entry, though the levels could be bigger

>though the levels could be bigger
Yeah, I was kind of thinking about hardware limitations on mobile.
When I last played the PS2 and PSP games I had to think way more about draw distance and how close I needed to be to see the objects. It's one of the nice things about having the Rerolls.
But yeah, hope they port it eventually. I'd play it.
>>
>>724093456
Just replay one of the old games and stop being sad.
>>
>>724094285
For reference, no level in Rolling Live lasts longer than 8 minutes. Growing levels will have two size-up transitions maximum. The final as large as possible level starts you off with a city sized katamari as a result
At least it's way better than the Katamari phone games that came before like Katamari Amore, the original katamari game with time travel as a theme
>>
>>724089745
It's pretty good, the levels lean more on being gimmicks but they're the good kind of gimmick and reminds me a lot of We Love Katamari so far from what I've played.

I'm kinda with the guy who created Katamari. It would be so much better if there was just the original game. Not because the other games are bad but katamari is a pure concept game, it makes the world a better place just by existing. Any other game just watered down the message.

Too bad it's by a Japanese developer and they all HATE modding with a passion and even think it should be a crime, so it'll never happen.
>>
>>724097185
That's how I feel about most game franchises. Most just aren't cut out for it. And in many cases, the first game that started it was loved because of how novel and unique they were at the time. Sequels make it less special, and are bound to be much more predictable and boring. I like Okami but I don't know if I'll like Okami 2.

>the PC version is the way to go
ive had problems with the game crashing randomly, one character not showing up when they should of, one character just straight up delete themselves upon completing the part of the story that includes them, and i had the game get stuck crashing at the end of the credits forcing you to redo the entire ending again. A few of these things are fixed by a restart or fiddling with in game settings, but it looks like the game is just poorly optimized all around that it makes sense the game took 5 fucking years to come out.
>>
>>724098482

Takahashi did not want to make a sequel, but was basically forced to by Namco due to the surprise success of the original game. He was told that the sequel was already being made and if he opposed it, it would be made without him. Hate letter might be the wrong term, but he didn't want the game to ever be made and quit the company over it.

Finally. I couldn't believe Reroll started in 720p windowed and required completing the tutorial before you could change it and then supported nothing modern PC games are expected to support.

>>
>>724100325
>It’s a shame nothing else he did hit as hard.
I think he just has different priorities when it comes to making games. He wants to be an artist that makes strange short art projects that you play for a couple hours, they put a smile on your face and you move on. That's his goal.
Katamari just brings things together so well that you WANT to keep playing it. It's a criticism of capitalism done so well that it scratches the same itch as capitalism. He created something so astronomically more powerful than he was going for that nothing can ever compare to it and he's not trying to.
The hamster wheel of Katamari is just so good but that was never what he wanted to make.

I've bought Reroll 5 times now. Everybody I give it to thinks its weird, but then ends up loving it, even my 68 year old mom who barely likes video games, but bought a Switch for Animal Crossing.

genuinely the best katamari, beating out katamari forever as the definitive katamari game. by a WIDE margin the most content, which is all that really matters in a katamari game because they all play identical. My only gripe with this one is that the king will NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP during missions. I know he always did in previous games, but it feels like every map has at least 2 separate king interrupts shitting up your HUD. Speaking of HUD, it feels more cluttered. idk if I'm only noticing it now, but having 3 corners of your screen covered by giant HUD elements can be kinda frustrating when you're trying to navigate certain maps and situations.

I struggled here too. There's a lot of roses hidden on walls and in pots and shit that you need to hit with the katamari or magnet to get them. The people are worth a lot of roses too so getting them is critical.

>we love katamari
the people who swear by that game always have the same excuse, "because there's no filler and every level is unique". we love katamari is the one that started the "special" levels that seem to have a love/hate, like cowbear. The thing is, katamari can't really have filler, all of the games play the same, all that matters is amount of content, and to a lesser degree, variety. Katamari Forever is previously the game with the most content. Katamari Forever also had THE BEST soundtrack across the whole series. Absolutely stellar remixes of the most popular songs from earlier entries. Now, it's Once Upon a Katamari has even more content. The new songs are okay, some are whatever, no real bangers yet from what I can tell, but they're good enough.

I really like the theme but I don't like how the majority of levels are "collect x" instead of just "roll up the level", you wind up bonking on a lot of trees, rocks, fences, and other things that you would be able to pick up in previous Katamari games, what were occasional neat bonus levels are now the main dish

KD has the two separate cow and bear levels, WLK slightly reduced the frustration by making a singular Cowbear level, but certainly has some frustrating levels. KD has more Make A Star levels than WLK, which is what people mean by filler; 9 versus 5, I think it is. I'm not sure I prefer WLK over KD, or would even argue in its favour, but Forever is basically a remix with little of its own to brag about, and had on disc DLC in a time when that mattered.

Does the game have completely fucked up collision detection for anyone else? I get stuck up the stupidest normal things half the time, while other things of same sizes I can roll up on as if it was nothing. The Colosseum level (make a pyre) had me getting stuck on a table while you could roll up the steps which were twice the size. The Pharaohs Wishes level had me unable to climb up the stairs, the game thought I was rolling up an invisible wall. Shit's fucked.

>I HATE the easy dashing even though I do use it because I dont want to fuck up my controller anymore
What I hate is that dashing does nearly fuck all. In KD and WLK it would rocket you off far beyond your maximum speed, here it merely makes you roll at normal speed. It's not even useful to get you back up to speed because 99% the time you have something invisible in the corner completely blocking your way.

I respect Takahashi for sticking to his guns about not wanting to keep working on Katamari games and even not being a game designer as much as an artist who occasionally dabbles in gaming. But I'd really like if he made a new game that wasn't these sort of "experiences". Something you play once, go "that was quirky" and forget about it. Katamari is a difficult hurdle to surpass but still I'd like to see him take another shot at a proper game while taking on his unique ideas.

I think it's just the King being amazed when you do a super clear.

there are also 2 super clears by the way. one for getting the katamari ultra large (or very near 100% for the collect levels), and one for beating the levels ultra fast (only on the generic collecting levels) which gives you comets.

I'd start with the original game/KD Reroll. The sequel not only acknowledges plainly that it's a sequel by popular demand but gameplay wise it's both harder but also a bit more experimental. Personally it's one of the reasons why I think 1 is still better than WLK. The sequel does some fun things but I think it lacks in more normal levels of starting off small and just get as big as you can without any further gimmicks attached.

That was the final level in Beautiful Katamari.

This one still has MID-FUCKING-LEVEL LOADING. I don't think it could handle tying together every level from the first to the last to the "roll up countries" to "roll up celestial objects".
>>
>>724136379
>This one still has MID-FUCKING-LEVEL LOADING
Which games had that beyond the PSP release? Usually it just does the motion-blur transition effect to hide the removal of smaller objects while it loads in the next set of larger things to roll up.
>>
>>724136101
Magnet doesn't last very long and the reach isn't super big, it's good for when there's a lot of small stuff or when you're rolling down a lane that has objects on both sides of it. Rocket is just a temporary speed increase like if you just dashed

Every level from We Love Katamari is back. Underwater, racing, fire, exact size, even Cowbear. The last level is the exact same except you roll up a blackhole instead of the sun. The fucking ending minigame is almost the same, except you don't have to dodge the King (but now you can roll up the credit text).

I counted 4 (four) entire new levels in the game:
- the Yokai one. Basically a normal "roll up X" stage except it's pitch black with zero visibility. it lights up a bit every time you catch one of the floating, bright blue souls.
- the Oasis one (roll up sand, where it disappears greenery and flowers will automatically grow, the catch is you'll dehydrate yourself while doing this so you have to dive into pools regularly),
- the Pharaoh's Wishes (a dozen consecutive "roll up only X" with very tight time limits on each task, extremely difficult due to the broken collision detection preventing you from reaching anything quickly).
- the Sweets level in present day. This has a balance goal. Basically roll up anything fruit/candy/milk related but dodge every-fucking-thing else, which will decrease your sweetness balance. You may need to do this a few times until you even figure out what counts as sweets and what does not.
Yokai and Oasis are pretty cool. Pharaoh could be decent if the controls wouldn't suck. Sweets is just Cowbear without the 1-hit-game-over.

You also have mid-level loading even on pint sized levels (how the fuck is this acceptable when average PCs have 8x the memory as the games total size including all music/FMVs, shit even a $300 gpu could fit the full game into VRAM twice over), and every once in a while you have reminders of the popup issues that plagued WLK Reroll.

This is game is extremely fucking disappointing IMO. If they fix the collisions, the roll speed bug, and get rid of the midlevel loading, it would be pretty good even though it adds only very few new level ideas.
>>
>>724128214
>>724136379
>>724139027
man you are really stuck on this loading screen thing huh
>>
>>724139027
>the roll speed bug
regarding this, the game is
- uncontrollably fast when you are small, nearly impossible to do precise movements like going through a thin bridge without falling
- starts glitching out when you get large, the ball will not adhere to your movement and spin faster than you move
- has uneven speed when you are large, like it moves faster for 2 ticks then moves slow for 1 tick.
- uncontrollably slow when you get very large. you can literally barely move. I think this was a balance change for VS mode where you can get a UFO to suck up your excess weight for bonus points, but in regular gameplay it means you have to nonstop dash to get basic movement later in levels. The rocket powerup is absolutely necessary to move.
>>
>>724139118
>man you are really stuck on this loading screen thing huh

It breaks up the game in a rather annoying fashion. They could've just done the motion blur effect to hide loading, there's no reason for the King to come up and cover the entire screen. There's no excuse for this when I can fit the game into RAM ten times over.

The worst part is that half the time there's some cutscene or the King telling you to "go here", and when those happen the camera pans back from the gate to your position - and the timer is not paused while this happens. The reason this sucks is because your powerups will run out as you can literally not control your character because he is off-screen. Lost the magnet powerup on As Large As Possible 5 several times in one game because of this.
I actually have to keep in mind when the transitions happen to avoid this now. I think they are at 3m, 12m, 60m, 300m.

Also interesting: some of the powerups disappear from the map as you get larger.
>>
>>724139027

All the other issues sound pretty bad.

>>
>>724139118
NTA but the ps2 had to do it because of disc reads and the physics engine was already pushing the console to its limits. They don't really have an excuse now a days.
>>
>>724127985
>The controls are fucked so not really, and the levels are nearly all rehashes of WLK
levels I dont have a problem with but I played more and I retract my statement, the controls are fucked and everything is slow
>>
So it's shit, right?
>>
>>724139491
The original game had no loading, the King just popped up to shit talk you and you could skip it immediately. It interrupted you but the game didn't actually load, it just masked that the map changed. He also only pointed out the gates until you rolled them up once, and then never again. So the levels were seamless.

We Love Katamari added mid-level loading, which was acceptable back in 2005 because it was on a system with bugger all RAM and the levels got larger. It also added the King ALWAYS zooming in on the gates. So basically 4-5 times each level, the game grinds to a halt and resumes. Also, WLK has a fucked up draw distance where the camera is positioned at an angle so you can only ever see a little in front of you. You can't see far away at any point. Again probably due to it being on the PS2, but note that KD allowed you to see much further.

Beautiful Katamari fixed all of that. The levels had 0 interruptions and the camera allowed you to look very very far into the distance, like back in KD. Look up Schloss Kosmos, it's basically the last level of WLK, but with zero interruptions, zero loading, a gigantic fuckhuge draw distance so you actually see where you are going, then it transitions into a planet wide screen and turns into the "roll up countries/continents" level from KD, but more detailed, then it transitions into the "roll up the stars" level from WLK. You go from 1 meter to 1 billion meters with zero loading. Given that the max size you can get on WLK is around 3600 meters, this makes the final level of Beautiful Katamari about 250 000 times larger.

And then 18 years later on systems with 500x as much memory as the PS2, we are back to the limitations of WLK. It's a huge step backwards.
>>
>>724141039
It has slightly more content than WLK but with more broken controls. If you loved that, it's basically more of the same. The controls are way more annoying but the levels tend to be far easier.

They should've ported Beautiful Katamari instead, IMO.
>>
Do I have to play the other Katamari games to get this
>>
>>724141341
>The original game had no loading
Incorrect.
This is a loading screen, it happens whenever you get bigger and the level has to change.
>>
>>724141519
I'm not playing a game with bad controls, I'll wait for a huge sale or a bug fix.
>>
>>724141723
you can skip that screen far too fast for it to load anything. at best it just hides the fact that the maps physically change.
on beautiful katamari, you can see how the map changes with new stuff popping up from nothing because they only do motion blur instead of a masking screen.

but I don't have a ps2 at the moment, it may actually load. either way it is far less annoying than the loading screen in WLK, and it doesn't stop to tell you to GO HERE RETARD every playthrough either.
>>
>>724142041

You mean, "it's hiding the game loading assets", correct? So you agree it's a loading screen.

>>
>>724142674

>>
>>724142708
I mean its not that bad, a bit annoying how you bump into stuff and how you are slower than the PS2 games but its still a great game.
Plus the game is far far easier than the PS2 games so you dont need the controls of that game.
>>
>>724142272
the last level does it 4 times I think. worst part is that if you have a powerup, it'll keep expiring as the camera pans back to you and you can't move (except blindly). since the last level gives you 3-4 magnets, if you time the magnets to a position where there's tons of stuff to roll up, it can easily make you grow large enough to trigger the cutscene.

oh you also have mid-level cutscenes now if that wasn't enough.

>>724142478
>It's a loading screen, why do you think it's not?
it can be skipped immediately. if it did mandatory loading, you couldn't skip it immediately, you'd have to wait like you do in WLK.

>You mean, "it's hiding the game loading assets", correct? So you agree it's a loading screen.
changing the ingame map from memory is not the same as loading data from the disc. WLK on PS2 had to physically load data from the disc because the level did not fit into RAM in one go.

like I said it may actually do load from the disc, I don't have my PS2 to check any more, but it does so far faster and far less annoying than WLK.

also a 16mb ram system doing mid-game loading is more acceptable than a 16gb system, especially when you are running the exact same fucking level on it (see WLK Reroll).

and again, beautiful katamari fixed it, the game went from 2cm (on the final castle level) to 980 000 km without loading, on a 512MB system, so why is the new game back to having loading screens?
>>
>>724142847
>and again, beautiful katamari fixed it
does it emulate well?
>>
>>724142847
>it can be skipped immediately

it's fast enough that it feels instantaneous, especially compared to WLK, that's what matters. on KD Reroll you can skip it instantly once the animation finished.

>Boot the game up and see for yourself. It's a loading screen, you are incorrect if you think it's not one.
third fucking time I'm saying this: i don't have my PS2 any more so I can't check if it in fact loads assets from DVD or not. but even if it does, it's far faster and far less annoying than WLK or even this new game. plus the game draw distance in KD is far better as well, WLK has it gimped down (probably because the PS2 can't draw so much assets).

and none of that excuses the fact that all of this was fixed in Beautiful Katamari, so the new game is technically worse than a 18 year old game.

they're a routing tool first and foremost, they last like 10-15 seconds and the range on the magnet is pretty low, you'll use it primarily to zoom by a bunch of dense shit at once to get guaranteed pickups, same with the rocket
The radar only appears after you've beaten a level once and it's nice to have for figuring out where the fuck the last crown or present is
>>
>>724146096
it's not a skill issue when the ball is twitching back and forth, when all you do is press forward on a flat plane with nothing blocking you.

neither is the physical rolling speed not matching how the ball touches the ground.

>It's a loading screen. You are incorrect if you think otherwise.
NTA but, in Katamari Damacy Reroll the "loading" is maybe a 1 second popup.

In We Love Katamari it's a 1-2 second fadeout, 1-4 seconds of actual loading, 1-2 second fadein, a few seconds of the King blathering about how he can't speak when its loading (2-5 bubbles you have to skip one by one), and 3-4 seconds the entire camera pans away so he can show you the gate where you should be going (and 3-4 more word bubbles to skip again). In Once Upon it's the same plus 1-2 seconds for the camera to pan BACK to your location (during which the game already resumed, but you can't see where you are moving).

So depending on how fast you can close the kings word bubbles, it interrupts the game anywhere from 5-15 seconds.

Now compared that to the 1 second "loading" in Katamari Damacy.

It feels like he wanted it and noby to be as open ended and close to toybox experiences as possible, to not have too many set or forced reactions / interactions, but they are a tad too shallow because of it.
Still, they are some of the closest approximations of digital toyboxes/doll houses before VR

ngl i thought katamari damacy was cool in 2004 or 05 or whatever and i thought it was epic a brand new game for the ps2 was released for only 20 dollars, and i played the heck out of it
but like, theres not much there after youve played the game the first time, never really saw the point of sequels and stuff, it was just originally a quirky unique low depth game that you play for a few hours and then youre over it
>>
>>724080017
The only big issue i have so far is this was the only katamari game i actually got stuck and couldnt move at all... in the tutorial if get big enough and wedge your self between i think a vacuum cleaner and a shopping bag you can just get stuck. You cant roll climb out and you dont go fast enough to knock stuff off of you. In the old games stuff just start flying off you if you get stuck like that. But in this stuff only seems to fly out if your going fast and crash into something.
>>
>>724161753
I've had this happen too. I get stuck on seemingly nothing. And there are some levels where it seems no matter how big you get, you can't roll up humans, so they're a constant obstacle.
>>
>>724091789
You need to switch the control settings to classic mode. They feel "weighty" so to speak while modern controls are floaty.

Does anyone know how to get the last crown in As Large As Possible (Sea)?
I thought it might be tied to not rolling up the octopus but then the ghost ship still came and I can only find the first two crowns and cousins
>>
>>724165531
They're not bad, just kind of fine. The problem is they reuse a LOT of levels from the first two games so they're just not worth playing. This one is all new levels apparently.
>>
>>724167371
I miswrote, you have to get the octopus before you reach the 80cm mark and then the level has an entirely different 3rd phase, you go underwater instead of getting attacked by the ghost ship, really neat gimmick

i've played katamari games in the past but never got too far because I keep getting filtered by the controls. This time though i've gotten pretty far but still find that i'm very clumsy with the controls, is that just part of it or am I missing something?

>>724176920
it's part of the charm, but there's the simple control scheme if you really can't get a handle on them

Still need to S Rank all stages and I only have 19/31 of the cutscenes for some reason. One was Climax 1, suggesting there's more. Two of my pages are blank but those might be deluxe edition stuff.

It's the best Katamari game in my mind as it complements the other games by having entirely new content and there's a lot of it. I'm actually going to start a playthrough of Katamari Damacy since I actually want to play the stages where you grow in a modern Japanese home and Once is the only game in the series that doesn't have that.
Favorite level at the moment is Yokai and the most brutal level was Sweets because it really tries to trick you.
>>
>>724180542
Looks like all achievements are reasonably fun, guess I'll aim that first too before all S
>>
>>724182919
cheevos are just getting the crowns in all levels, not too hard with the radars they give you after the initial stage clear
>>
>>724182919
>>724183367
It's all crowns but you need all the cousins to get to all the stages.
The only tedious part is on multi cousin levels the second cousin won't spawn until you've finished the level with the first and the same thing goes for needing the second for the third to spawn.

Really good game, I think it's my 2nd favorite Katamari after We Love, it would be at the top since the level design and variety is crazy, but it's got some control issues and the collision gets pretty wonky compared to the first two games
>>
>>724190397
I watched some gameplay on it. Seems more like an allegory for physically disabled people than trans stuff. The real issue is like all of takahashis new games the "gameplay" is extremely bare bones and mostly just exists to pad run time.

game definitely lags when transitioning out of the end of a level during the Royal Rainbow, and the pop-in is actually really bad, sometimes things you need to roll up load in as you're moving, and you can just see the entire world behind you suddenly appear if you turn or use the quick turn around thing, but otherwise runs fine during gameplay.
it's definitely playable, but also feels way sloppier than damacy reroll and especially we love reroll
